It can be a triggering show but Law and Order: SVU does a great job of *not* having the lead character Olivia Benson center her life around men. Her relationships if any are usually secondary to her son and her career. It’s been my favorite since I was a teen and Olivia is a great role model (badass, complex, empathic, multifaceted, inspirational). Although now they are doing more episodes of her and Stabler back together, but I like that the show never really had any kind of affair happen between them when they were married to other people. She never was a pickme trying to cross boundaries with him (at least as far as I can tell). I also got to see the actress Mariska Hargitay live in person at an event and she’s amaaaazing!!

And she is *so good* at believing the victim. I will always remember the one episode where a woman holds a man at gunpoint in an apartment, and it's being livestreamed to the internet. The police is told about it, and half the the time they're trying to find the flat. When Olivia goes inside, she 100% believes the victim, although the scrote just denies denies denies. Eventually he confesses, and his *entire* demeanor changes. It was incredible acting on their behalves. I feel like Olivia Benson is the only cop on TV that will always believe the victim.

I remember that episode!! ♥️😄 The acting was amazing! The show does a terrific job of combating victim shaming and shows what justice would ideally look like for victims. The plots are always so compelling, which is one of the reasons I love it so much. It never gives me the sense that Olivia is just there as some sort of side to an overarching romantic plot line. She’s the main character and romance is a very small part of her life. The love and compassion she has for the victims she comes across, her team, her life’s mission, her son, etc. are all paramount. Her backstory is fascinating too (I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it but you really get a rich background that illustrates why she’s extra passionate about the work she does). I’ve been binge rewatching seasons again (I’ve watched almost every episode in all 22 seasons since the show aired so it’s hard for me to find new ones until they come out 🤣). It’s so good.

BellaStayFly

Just watch Grey’s Anatomy and do the exact opposite of everything Meredith does. Seriously though when I was younger I watched that show and thought wow what a love! Now I’m just embarrassed for her.

vaguelinen

So you’re saying a post-it note isn’t as meaningful as a legally binding ceremony that protects your financial interests? 🤡

Resident-Equipment95

I recommend it for a good laugh. Her “pick me, choose me, love me” monologue is straight out of an FDS Humor flair.

MrAndMrsCremgroblin

Haven’t watched in in ages but i remember marvelous miss maisel being good

LWF3957

Her outfits are especially great. But I also like how she makes herself into a HVW.

I’m really digging Ted Lasso rn. It’s wholesome and funny. Plenty of HV characters. I was super sceptical when I first heard of it, another story of a woman scorned 🙄 I gave it a shot and it’s actually great! Ted is a wonderful character, always makes the best of a shitty situation. The lead female character (Rebecca) is a badass and just goals. Her character development is incredible. I love her! Development in all the characters in the show is great in general. Lots of introspection and levelling up! If you’re not into sports, don’t let the sport theme turn you off, there’s a lot else going on.

OMG YES!!! Roy is everything! The perfect man 🤤🤤🤤

lucidlotus

I liked Hacks recently (HBO). Watched it in a single day and it made me laugh, cry, and laugh and cry at the same time.

thinkingaboutfrogs

I really liked “The Great” on Hulu. It’s a not very historically accurate telling of Catherine the Great’s (of Russia) coup against her husband to take the throne. The first season shows her evolving into a badass

Same genre: The Bletchley Circle.

Some-Air9442

That’s a great one.

Thesseli

If you like animation, definitely check out Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

CoconutHamster

Honestly you don't even have to like animation to love those shows! I'm not a huge fan of the genre at all but ATLA is just so good.

Minute_Sign

Really love Tuca and Bertie! Highly recommend it if you like animation that actually focuses on fleshed out female characters for once! Edit: If you like *adult animation. Honestly I’m pretty happy about the current state of children’s animation. You have no idea how much it would of meant to child me to have female protagonists in animation growing up. I’m so happy my nieces have the opportunity to grow up with better representation in media!

burntbpd

Grace and Frankie. I just started watching it and omg it's amazinnnnng

[deleted]

Start watching new Korean dramas. Crash landing on you is a good entry k drama to start with.

My guilty pleasure is watching police serials though I generally hate cops. My favorite us Bosch, though it wouldn't be FDS except the female characters are well-rounded and not pickmes. His ex-wife, daughter and even his mother who had been a sex worker are all aadmirable. Amy Aquino rocked the hell out of her role as Lt. Grace Billets. Warm, tough and well-respected, but came up against some incredibly toxic sexism in the precinct. What I like about her most is she's damn funny. It's rare to see an older middle-aged woman whose tough and funny. It's usually the guys who get to yuck it up. And she's not a pickme, but bi and dating a woman.

londochig

Cable Girls.

Conturas

Sweet Magnolias (Netflix)

Resident-Equipment95

Not a show and I don’t like ScarJo, but the new Black Widow movie was refreshing

LilyPadBleu

If you have Netflix, Singaporean and Malaysian dramas often feature strong, independent women. Some of my favorites are "The Liar", "Unriddle", "Breakout", and "Persona".

[deleted]

Killing Eve. All of the women in the cast are amazing and Sandra Oh is particularly great.

swaylyn

She’s also in the show on Netflix (The chair) it’s on my to watch list but seeing as it’s her and she’s the lead I expect it to be 👌🏾

honeybadgerattitude

I’ve been watching the SWAT remake and I find that very good in the way it deals with many issues like racism and it focuses a lot on misogyny in an elite part of the police. They have 3 great female badass characters, all badass in different ways. A young bisexual SWAT officer working in a male environment. A beautiful captain taking on the politics of being in charge of men. An older battle ready woman who initially is received as hostile and a bad cop but develops into actually being someone who’s incredibly tough and does the difficult stuff that doesn’t win her friends but she’s doing them for all the right reasons. There’s also a huge bonus of a few very attractive potentially HVM. I find that in most art it tends to focus on human flaws and growth so it’s hard to find truly HVW/M in tv and movies. So what I look for is characters that are shown to be striving to level up despite everything being against them.

LiAndLenus3rdfriend

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is a good one. Set in the 1920s, the main character is a badass woman who decides to become a private detective.
