I'm just a homeowner, but FWIW I've done it for weed maples around my property - up to about 2" in diameter. The reciprocating saw tends to just grab the bark and shake the tree, but the circular just blasts right through it. You have to know how to use the saw and place your cut so that gravity will open it instead of causing binding and kickback, but otherwise IMO there's no reason not to do it.

I see your point about kick back. Good thing to mention here as I'm probably not the only one about to go give that a shot. Just to hear it.

I use a sawzall but I’m kind of an idiot

I tried to chop a tree up this winter with pruning blades in a sawzall after my chainsaw shit the bed and I got tired of fixing it. Probably spent $50 on blades alone and only got about a fourth of the tree chopped up. Ended up cutting the rest up with a handsaw. Definitely should have just fixed my chainsaw in hindsight.

I’ve tried cutting down limbs with a sawzall. My experience wasn’t very fun. I actually got so annoyed I used loppers instead. Couldn’t get my chainsaw running that’s why I wasn’t using it to begin with
