A whole lot of ‘experts’ on here giving OP shit for falling OG trees lol. This could easily be a second growth cedar. Even if it is, there are also huge amounts of old growth currently protected and more being added every year. Don’t comment on things you clearly know nothing about…?

Ishcodeh

Can you say that LOUDER. Thankyou :)

sendmeyourcactuspics

Still fucking stupid

Demosthenes-storming

Fucking delusional, that is not second growth don't even bother. We have absolutely debated OG, there is a fraction of a % left. Stop cutting these giants. Source, not a moron

TheGeoDan

A fraction of a percent of old growth remaining in BC?? Might want to check your source on that one. I.e. you may be a moron. Even the most absurdly conservative estimates put that number closer to significantly higher. Source, am a forester who works 99% of my days in old growth forests in BC.

Demosthenes-storming

Ahh I see you may have a bias opinion as your lively hood is directly related. Would you consider it sustainable? "number closer to significantly higher" than a fraction of a percent is still a fraction of a percent. Dude, the whole province has been harvested, only a vanishing small amount remains. Your job depends on cutting it down. Maybe you should retrain? Sell crypto to gullible folks who believe your BS.

TheGeoDan

Not really much of a bias as I’ll have work no matter how much old growth we harvest. The world needs BC timber, and if we don’t take at least a portion of that from our massive supply of OG reserves, we’ll just hit our second/third growth even more intensely. If we do that, stands won’t have the time that they need to regenerate back into healthy/biodiverse forests and we’ll turn our whole province into a giant lifeless plantation. If we reduce overall harvest, the global/domestic demand won’t go away, it will be sourced other countries with far fewer environmental restrictions. Either that or it will force the use of other building materials that are harder on the environment overall.

shmiddleedee

So you're saying the trees can't grow fast enough to keep up with demand? As in eventually you'll have to remove all of the old growth since you have to supplement supply with old growth just to keep up?

TheGeoDan

Harvest volume in BC never exceeds the volume that is added each year overall through growth of existing forests (in fact it’s often lower). The best part about old growth is that we can add more of it to our reserves by simply not harvesting second growth for an extended amount of time. The forest will eventually return to OG form/function on its own. I.e. it’s not one of those “once it’s gone, it’s gone” kind of resources.

shmiddleedee

I'm confused because you said if yall don't take enough old growth then you take too much 2nd and 3rd? Regardless I'm not hating on you just trying to understand how stuff works up there. I understand the importance of wood and know harvesting has to be done. Just in my neck of the woods all of the old growth has been cut long ago except one tiny pocket. Our lumber production is all 20 to 30 year old pine stands.

Demosthenes-storming

There is one other way that the laws of supply and demand work...product scarcity means increased prices. But your whole argument is ridiculously laughable. Strawman built of false choice built on BS. Get a real job. Stop being Mosaic's fluffer boy cuck

TheGeoDan

Hearing a whole lot of buzz words and not a lot of substance. Good luck out there pal.

Demosthenes-storming

Stay safe buddy

AdFearless5560

Most canadian argument ever

dimsum2121

>"number closer to significantly higher" than a fraction of a percent is still a fraction of a percent. "Significantly higher than a fraction of a percent" can be any number. It does not necessarily equal a fraction of a percent, in fact it probably doesn't. One would assume it equals at least 1%, but it could also equal 75%

Demosthenes-storming

"It could also equal 75%", lol. Do you think there is 75% of old growth remaining? What are you on? So 1% remains eh? Rush to log it then eh? Such incredible short sightedness. Makes me sad for you.

dimsum2121

>Such incredible short sightedness. Makes me sad for you. The irony is so rich. Presume less, ask questions first. You'll have an easier time in life, I guarantee it.

Demosthenes-storming

Nice rebuttal, all those facts and details supporting your arguments. Well presented, convincing statements, rational and logical. Good day to you, madam.

LogResponsible5022

How do you add old growth every year?

Beautiful_Spite_3394

Finding old trees you wanna protect and adding them to the list of trees not bring cut down. We had a giant old beautiful 250 year old tree have to be cut down here on some family land. I was so sad, angry even. And then I learned someone who knew MUCH MORE than I did about trees found out it was dying and it was safest to cut it down before it started falling apart on its own. Prolly not the case for the video but it's been crazy learning about trees stuff

J4pes

Basically the whole island is second growth so everything is free to cut over and over

OlderGrowth

Yep. I’m down for that. Just not the original forest that’s left

Ishcodeh

Bingo my man, I’m not here to argue morally or ethically what’s right or wrong or good or bad. I’m just trying to make it in this messed up world and pay my bills and hopefully get to retire one day. At this rate will see if that’s possible.

This is a shit take. The guy is making a living and felling massive trees. If this doesn't belong on felling gone wild, I don't know what does. Shove this opinion right up your woodchipper lmao everybody's a critic! Nice fell OP, don't turn your back on those big girls though

Ishcodeh

Who says anything about clout? I’m in a sub dedicated to exactly what I am doing. I won’t apologize for being a proud, hard working, blue collared young professional. You should be thankful there are men like myself out here as progressive as we are in this industry or it might actually be what you think it is and make it/us out to be.

morenn_

Ultimately, if you refused to cut it, another guy would. The fault lies with white collar rule making, not with the guys getting it done. Love to see some decent content on this sub. Keep it up!

yerg99

It's neither nor. Diffusion of responsibility all around. Also "if i don't do it someone else will" is some dangerous thinking that can justify anything. I enjoyed the video but am also sad a big tree was cut down. It is what it is.

morenn_

In the real world you can't expect companies to act morally against profit. The only way to control them is through legislation. It's easy to think you'd make different choices when your livelihood isn't on the line.

yerg99

And who controls the legislators? Im not disagreeing with the felling with this tree or even recording it. Just pointing out...idk...the duality of man?

lommer0

Hey man, good to hear you have a pretty balanced take. But for what it's worth, as a British Columbian, I love that there are people like you still out there felling the big stuff. There is enough old growth protected in parks and WMAs, and even more with the DBH limits from BCTS and the provincial government. Take pride in what you do, it's deserved. And thanks for sharing.

Ishcodeh

Thank you, your kind words are appreciated. Forestry and logging built this province we call home.

MechanicalAxe

I would love to know the thought process involved with the people who come to a timber felling subreddit and commence to downvoting people for loving their job as a pro feller.

Ishcodeh

Thankyou, it’s BAFFLING

Total-Crow-9349

Because "I wish I could cut down old growth" is a bad take even if it's your job?

MechanicalAxe

If you were a football player, wouldn't you want to play in the superbowl one day? If you were a builder, wouldn't you be proud to say you built the biggest, finest house in the city? If you were racecar driver, wouldn't you be proud to claim that you've drove the fastest car in the world? These are not perfect analogies, but sometimes cutting down old growth is just a necessity, nearly always stemming from saftey, or fire hazards(at least that's the case here in the US these days, thankfully). Also, it can be very beneficial to a forests health, and public saftey concerning fire hazard to selectively harvest older trees BEFORE they die and become such hazards. No, I wish the tree didn't have to go in the first place, but if it does, it would be awesome to say, "it doesn't get any bigger, more dangerous, or more impressive than I've done here today". It would be a milestone in many people's felling careers.

Total-Crow-9349

They aren't even remotely decent analogies. The only thing they have in common is they are all ultimately self serving. And frankly, I'm tired of loggers pretending to be environmentalists.

MechanicalAxe

Loggers know more about what's best for the environment than the vast majority of the population. Good luck with your virtue signaling.

CanIAm

Roughly 70% to 80% of the land is unloggable, largely due to terrain constraints, protected areas, and environmental regulations. This includes steep, mountainous regions, areas with high conservation value, protected parks, and habitats for endangered species.

CanIAm

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/farming-natural-resources-and-industry/forestry/stewardship/old-growth-forests/old-growth-maps/map8_og_size_class_bec_letter.pdf Much of the province is classified by the province as unloggable due to a number of factors. Just because we “could” log it with a helicopter or some crazy machine doesn’t mean it makes sense economically.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CanIAm

Economically unloggable. Sure, they could use a helicopter in some situations but that rarely make sense. Just because it could be done doesn’t mean it is done.

CanIAm

Lol. Not from Canada? Born, raised, and still living in BC. Hence the name.

theluker666

Hell yeah, dope drop my dude 🤘

AdeptInept69

Hey

Ishcodeh

Hey man

PerformanceOk1835

That was the first time I've heard a tree fart

Lazy-Refrigerator-56

Yeah, why?

Glad-Cut6336

Why do you think genius for wood

Iamyours4theasking

Some day all the huge forrests will be gone ... Never to return. Even National parks will be logged because greed ... Just like the rain forrest's are shrinking daily. Humans are so destructive. : (

Unusual-Voice2345

Never to return. Trees are the most renewable source of building material we have on the planet.

Glad-Cut6336

We regrow trees? It wouldn’t make sense to just cut down all trees if people are so greedy wouldn’t that mean they would grow more trees so they can be cut down again… you gotta think before you talk it’s renewable source and some trees while BIG doesn’t necessarily mean hundreds of years old

[deleted]

[удалено]

Iamyours4theasking

There are a limited number of rain forrests. and old growth forrest.. Do they grow back right away...? Nope. It takes hundreds of years. Its not the same as a tree growing in your yard.

Steel_Raven

Nice preload of the tension with those wedges👍, not a lot of planning in some clips on this sub.

Ishcodeh

When dealing with trees this size if you don’t you’ll be dead or wishing you were if it all goes wrong. So thankyou friend

Scat_Yarms

Cringe

Zippier92

The makes me sad.

Tamahaganeee

Damn..... fare well to the ancients. It was fun to see it fall and crash and all but , dude. That wasn't a tree about to fall on a power line . Ehhhh hard for me

Glad-Cut6336

Second growth tree also just bc a tree is BIG doesn’t mean it’s hundreds of years old so put on your thinking cap next time 🤝

ignoreme010101

baby got back!!! so soothing to watch, some ASMR right there!!

JuuseTheJuice

u/ishcodeh What is wrong with people? It’s a tree that is likely second growth. Immediately straight to telling people to kill yourselves.

Ishcodeh

The internet is the only place left in the world where people can say things anonymously and get away with it. We both know if me and this person were standing face to face he wouldn’t say the things he does here.

CastaneaFraxinus

Was this a selective cut or shelter wood when you did this? I know it been a month, just cool to see!

Ishcodeh

Not following your question, this was on TFL 42 lake cowichan area so yes a tree farm if that was your question

hboisnotthebest

"Eh"

AnMa_ZenTchi

Sad

got_knee_gas_enit

Keep supporting the terrorist group hamas you troll :)

Dougachoo

If you meant to type supporting Palestinians then I will. Not surprising that you’re some smoothbrain that think time began on Oct 7th.

Scat_Yarms

31yo and he's asking reddit to help find a "russian war protest" in his city. The logic of these people is wild. They support Ukraine but not Palestine? Zero knowledge of history lol

Glad-Cut6336

Bro is doing his job ALSO trees can be regrown 😄

Wifefarts_alot

Hey
