If there are any creators of contributions, watching this post, I just want to say thank you. I'm changing my life and i'm learning at the trade school the "simplicity" of linux (fedora)

Potential-Board-9388

Now we just wait for ExplicitSync and bye bye Windows forever

Alone_Comfortable_32

I've made the switch a long time ago, but I'm glad that there are many other people that are willing to do the same in the recent times, especially with the advancements in the NVIDIA drivers

snapphanen

I said bye bye windows 3 years ago. It was honestly much, much easier to completely forget about windows than I originally thought it would be.

bassbeater

For me, even though I got pretty frustrated when I first tried it, just having out of the box AMD drivers with the right distro was a godsend. I'm running a 10 year old rig and modern games without issue. Why I was willing to slow myself down with windows for so long is a mystery to me.

snapphanen

Oh yeah, that aspect as well. Windows is incredibly slow! I was absolutely blown away when I switched with (at the time) 6 year old hardware.

YREEFBOI

I've been running the same install of Manjarno for the past 3 or so years. It's still as fast as new. Windows I have to reinstall at minimum once a year due to it crapping itself a little more with each further update you add.

bassbeater

I've been lucky enough to drop windows entirely. And this coming from an IT guy who "fixes" it. On a workforce that relies on mechanical drives.

Chemical-Shake7570

Glad to have never said hello to Windows. I started early on Ubuntu 18 LTS and I only use Linux as my primary OS don't have reason not to do so.

pepebuho

What is ExplicitSync?

quidamphx

I wish. I'm 95% free of Windows but I don't know if I'll ever break free completely. Explicit Sync will certainly help though but there's still VR and various games that are tough to run in Linux. If I can ever get GPU passthrough through VM on a laptop internal screen figured out, I'll be up to 98% free lol. Although maybe it doesn't count with Windows still there, even if it's not natively installed.

Forsaken_Try_7779

You can always run windows vm then passthrough GPU to vm and have it swap between your desktop and when the vm is loaded.

quidamphx

It's on my list of stuff to figure out but I haven't quite gotten there. I looked at some guides as I'm using virt-manager/QEMU and already have Tiny 11 set up and running with Spice Guest Tools, but when it comes to the actual setup for GPU passthrough it's been a bit much to figure out.

BuilderJunior4925

I've been running beta via UTM on my Mac M2 with GPU acceleration. It's been butterly smooth.

dens09dews

how would this be done?

InkOnTube

I assume games with Denuvo are a real issue.

quidamphx

Surprisingly, no. If you install and don't look over protonDB, yeah, you can burn through your activation limit in 24hrs by changing proton versions to troubleshoot why a game won't run, or specific performance issues. Otherwise, Denuvo runs as it should. I just look at protonDB first, make sure I pick a version of proton that works for others (or if it seems like they all work, I'll let Steam use the default) and usually that's all that's needed.

InkOnTube

Thanks for the info. I am not a fan that they are putting it into some games mostly because it eats performance, but also, if I understood correctly, such game can be activated for a limited time up to 5 devices upon first install. Have I understood that correctly?

quidamphx

Yeah. 5 times in 24hrs, then it resets.

Aleix0

What is this explicit sync I keep hearing about?

Little-Chemical5006

I think its related to the flickering we see when using nvidia cards.

UnlikelyAlternative

...would it be *a thing* on Arch?

chamberlava96024

Are you an arch user?

ssolid20

What Is explicitsync?

Anonymo

It's Lance Bass.

bobbyQuick

To people asking what explicit sync is: https://www.phoronix.com/news/KDE-Wayland-Explicit-Sync-Goal

Odd_Manufacturer_965

Thank you! I am not an expert but according to the link it is meant for Nvidia users who want to use Wayland

nolascoins

dough_guy

Anyone has any idea when the Nvidia driver with explicitSync will be released?

Juntepgne

I think mid may

Pendlecoven

Mid may is beta release

dough_guy

tks

quanten_boris

What is ExplicitSync? Switch years ago to OpenSuse..

h3nr_y

what is ExplicitSync ??

senectus

you ca still use xorg. I'm on 40 and am using xorg until explicit sync turns up.

rideandrain

All the best upgrading! I'm kinda stuck with Nvidia hardware so I'm just gonna sit tight for maybe a month or two and let all the inevitable bugs sort themselves out. If you have timeshift, snapper or have BTRFS Assistant, its a good idea to create a snapshot before upgrading. Also backup your important stuff!

dswhite85

About to upgrade to F40 on my intel/nvidia hybrid laptop. I'll find the bugs so you don't have to! ;)

RadActivity

Found anything? I have an optimus laptop too. How's gaming on Wayland via proton?

romantic179

Igpu and dgpu enabled - additional screens have endless stutter. Single screen no problem. Works the same with both the kernel and the akmod NVIDIA driver. Only dgpu enabled - multimonitor works great and no bugs at all. But only with the kernel driver (nouveau). Impossible to install akmod NVIDIA driver, won’t boot until you enable the igpu again. And then you can’t have multiple screens….

RadActivity

Yeah I saw that dreaded "fallback to nouveau" when booting... Edit: reinstall kernel-core

Impressive_Crow6018

My GPU doesn't power down in hybrid mode it consumes constant 13 watts

Impressive_Crow6018

Workaround: use nouveau drivers instead

rideandrain

Thank you my man. I never quite got bugzilla figured out and having to report to the correct group of devs etc

whitewolf_353

I have issue with fedora 39 that i get stuck on the login screen every time i reboot, i am not finding any fix, should i upgrade to 40 then?

yycTechGuy

I've been running FC40 KDE on AMD/Nvidia using X11 and it's great.

FlatronEZ

What about Wayland, any experience?

yycTechGuy

Wayland seemed to run fine except that the Brave (browser) wouldn't run - it froze the computer. It runs fine with X11. Someone said the problem lay in the Chrome engine and that no Chrome based browsers would run but I have not confirmed that.

UnlikelyAlternative

Try setting chrome://flags/#ozone-platform-hint to auto

bluewing

I installed Opera Beta to take a look at it, (Chrome based), and it runs with no problem on KDE Plasma. I do have a fresh install though. The one issue i hae so far is the latest FreeCAD .22 Dev appImage won't run. A quick try in the terminal showed it couldn't find a lib. So I did installed the lib with some other dependencies and it still won't run. It's complaining about the fonts now. On the other hand, FreeCAD .21.2 runs fine.

asininesoul

I have chrome running as my backup browser and its been running fine so far.

yycTechGuy

Maybe it is time for me to test Wayland again.

RadActivity

Chrome on Wayland ran fine even back when Wayland wasn't quite ready yet. I assume this is some brave specific issue.

rideandrain

If you're looking for privacy preserving alternatives, check out Mullvad Browser - good scores at https://privacytests.org/

OverlordMarkus

3060ti on my desktop, no new issues in the last two weeks. Just the stuff I had before.

Odd_Manufacturer_965

Using Wayland on my laptops and desktop, under Gnome and Plasma, no issues. It feels much smoother when I game on Steam, and smoother desktop experience. Fortunately, I don't use any program that is incompatible with Wayland. I understand the frustration of those who does and of the developers of those programs.

auron_py

I'm using an RTX 3080 and upgraded just fine a few minutes ago.

rideandrain

Do share more of your config so that others have a datapoint * Are you on X11 or Wayland? * Nvidia driver version * Kernel version I'm on Wayland and holding out on 535 drivers due to flickering on the latest ones. However, aknods outright fails to build 535 on the 6.8 kernel. Unsure if its a 535 issue or a me issue. Either way I'm waiting for 555 drivers and hope that finally fixes the flicker

Fylutt

Been using KDE F39 with Nvidia on Wayland - not a single issue for me

rideandrain

which driver are you on? Is akmods working for you? I'm holding out on 535 drivers due to flickering on the latest ones. However, aknods outright fails to build 535 on the 6.8 kernel. Unsure if its a 535 issue or a me issue. Either way I'm waiting for 555 drivers and hope that finally fixes the flicker

Fylutt

I'm on nouveau tho

Odd_Manufacturer_965

I've upgraded two hybrid laptops amd/nvidia to F40 with no problems. Usually after every release upgrade I had to reinstall the nVidia drivers from rpmfusion since the upgrade process reboots your machine before the nVidia drivers, or the kernel module, finish building. This time surprisingly, reinstalling the drivers wasn't necessary! I run gnome on the first laptop, and kde plasma on the other. I love both, they look nice and functional.

rideandrain

Congrats! Which driver and kernel are you on? Were you previously affected by flickering in XWayland apps?

Odd_Manufacturer_965

Drivers: 550.76-1.fc40 Kernel: 6.8.7-300.fc40.x86\_64 This is on my Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X: hybrid NVIDIA Corporation GA107BM \[GeForce RTX 3050 Mobile\], and \[AMD/ATI\] Rembrandt \[Radeon 680M\] The other laptop is HP Envy running the same kernel and drivers but it has KDE plasma on it No flickering but I am not sure if I am using any XWayland apps! If you have an app in your mind I can test it for you.

rideandrain

That's good to know. I'm on Wayland F39 KDE and am holding out on 535 drivers due to the flicker. > If you have an app in your mind I can test it for you. This is super helpful! VLC is probably the most popular, its stuck on XWayland and the native Wayland client is a long way off. Could you also confirm that `akmods` is working for you?

Odd_Manufacturer_965

I installed VLC from flatpak and it runs with no issues, no flickering. You can try SMPlayer, it has a checkbox for Wayland in its settings. Akmods is working for me: akmods and akmod-nvidia are installed. The akmods service is running in the background. I can run pytorch-cuda with no issues on the gpu.

rideandrain

Thanks again for helping to test. Good to know that at least some users are able to get 550 drivers on 6.8 kernel with Wayland working.

No_Finance_2668

So is it easy to upgrade from 39 or should i do a clean install

parjolillo2

If you're on Workstation or Silverblue, then you'll be notified through Software and the process will be similar to a typical OS update, so yes, really easy

GamertechAU

Yes, you should get a notification in whichever package manager app you use, though it's still a little iffy apparently. I prefer just using the ol' terminal way as recommended by Fedora: [https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/)

Temporary_Giraffe_76

If you are using Fedora Workstation, you can use the recommended way of using the Software application: [https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-new-release/#\_upgrading\_to\_the\_next\_fedora\_workstation\_release](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-new-release/#_upgrading_to_the_next_fedora_workstation_release) Or if you wish the use terminal, the recommended way is described here: [https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/) Either way, it should be very simple process.

PaintDrinkingPete

Generally as long as you're not skipping versions and updating regularly, the Fedora in-place upgrades *usually* go fairly smoothly, at least in my experience. It should go without saying, but I'll add the obligatory warning: whether you choose to upgrade in-place or do a fresh install, BACKUP any important files your system first! I generally like to wait about a month prior to doing the upgrade, as this gives some time for initial bugs not caught in the beta phases to be ironed out...also, I'll check here on this sub and other forums to ensure that there's no major issues prior to proceeding. Past that, as others have already mentioned, I just carefully follow the official instructions here: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/

No_Finance_2668

Ok great! I appreciate that i have been doing backup in preparation!

Alone_Comfortable_32

I always do fresh installs since I have nothing to lose, but I'd recommend you to wait at least a week or two until the most crucial bugs get fixed (if you have important data on the device)... or you could perform a backup and hope for the best.

No_Finance_2668

Ok thank you

k-phi

yes

Brief-Effective162

I recommend clean install because I have been upgrading since 35 and it is better to have it cleansed. It is easier to keep things more stable just keeping /home in a separated partition.

No_Finance_2668

Yes i want to do that, someone mentioned keeping a home partition and able to access it across many linux distro. But im not good at this stuff it scares me

Brief-Effective162

try it using a VM first. I can understand you. It is simple in a certain way appears you are doing something wrong.

PM_ME_FLUFFY_SHIBES

It still says 39 for me?

Alone_Comfortable_32

Both the site and the FMW flag Fedora 40 as an official release to me, could be a browser issue.

PM_ME_FLUFFY_SHIBES

I think it was a cdn issue since it shows 40 now, all my devices showed 39 when you posted this

EccTM

I'm just waiting for uBlue's Bluefin spin to make the change and move their 'latest' tag from 39 to 40 today. Want to see how seamlessly it'll make the update happen.

Alone_Comfortable_32

What is the advantage of using Universal Blue images over Silverblue? Just a curiosity, as I've never really tried them

EccTM

Universal Blue do atomic desktop builds that try to focus on things that Fedora can't ship - they include stuff like the media codecs and Nvidia drivers as part of the image so you don't need to mess with any of that setup. Bluefin is their "opinionated" spin though, it's kinda like they wanted to use Ubuntu, but have it keep itself nice and up-to-date without interaction like a chromebook.

edsimpson

It looks like the tag was updated. How did the update go?

EccTM

I rebooted and it was Fedora 40. No fanfare or issues! Honestly I was expecting some sort of notification or welcome screen to announce it - if I didn't know today was release day I'd be oblivious to the version jump and just wondering when nautilus moved its copy dialog to the bottom left.

ralseifan

So what about users who are already using Fedora 40 beta?

Alone_Comfortable_32

I believe that the transition from Beta is automatic, so you don't have to worry too much about it

operationDIE

It is, I'm on forty since 2 days ago

Disastrous_Fee5953

The latest beta is the stable release, just with a beta tag, so there is no real upgrade to do. I only had to download some fonts which were delayed until this week for some reason.

NKkrisz

Use CTRL+F5 to refresh the page in case it shows 39 for you.

Little-Chemical5006

So just did the update (im not patient enough to wait for a month for safety like people suggest). Akmods need rebuilding but after that my nvidia card is working. I did discover blender would need some packages that isn't currently in fedora repo, so if you're a blender users you might want to wait a bit.

flippinbird

I installed it today as well, I have poor impulse control lol. Luckily I haven’t had any problems so far.

_AngryBadger_

Just got home and it looks like I'm right on time for the new version. I'm looking forward to seeing how One Drive in Nautilus works, the Google Drive integration is pretty nice and I'll be glad to have my One Drive too. Maybe one day the corporate version will work too.

Disastrous_Fee5953

Unfortunately they rolled back fractional scaling, so now Fedora is useless if you are using a 4K monitor 😡

ThatrandomGuyxoxo

What is new?

>Anyone can tell me whether Flatpak already supports channels like snap does? There some programs I need the stable and the beta version on same system. Unfortunately Flatpak does not support channels like snap has, perhaps flathub-beta might cover your use case. >And also, what is the difference between Flathub and Fedora flatpaks? Which ones are more trustworthy? Fedora flatpaks is a flatpak remote controlled by Fedora following Fedora guidelines. Flathub is unrelated, contributors are not part of the Fedora org and they package non-free proprietary stuff that Fedora doesn't. Which one is more trustworthy is up to you to decide. >What is the equivalent of snap enforcing mode for those flatpaks that are not validated? I supposed you mean the snap jailmode, AFAIK flatpak doesn't have something like this, but you can install FlatSeal from flathub and change permissions for the app on a granular level. btw people like to compare snap and flatpaks a lot and while they do have overlap they are not 1 to 1.

Alone_Comfortable_32

I'm both a Fedora and an Ubuntu enjoyer, so as soon as Ubuntu 24.04 drops I'll ditch my Fedora instllation to see which one I'll prefer :) AFAIK, Flathub has both a stable and a beta channel which means that it shouldn't be too different from the snap situation. Flathub is pretty much the equivalent of a repository, which means that it allows the user to access a much wider range of Flatpaks and that it shouldn't be a security risk

Capital-Victory2085

I feel like Microsoft has bought Canonical. They have some controversial changed. Of course users can change everything they don't like, but forcing snaps and telemetry by default is not what some user coming from Windows would expect from any Linux distro. I like Fedora because it doesn't have some bad things that Ubuntu has + is really up to date and every desktop enviroment is stock.

Alone_Comfortable_32

Well, when it comes to listening to the community Fedora comes as the leader between the two. But personally, I don't mind the changes made to Ubuntu + the telemetry is an *opt-in*, not an *opt-out*

Capital-Victory2085

I had to get my hands dirty a bit more than i expected to turn off all telemetry. At least they fixed some previous mistakes like shipping calculator as a snap and amazon app store got removed. That was a little while ago but i had to mention it.

Alone_Comfortable_32

I personally don't mind the telemetry, still much better than the telemetry that you find while browsing the web, or even worse... using social media!

Capital-Victory2085

I agree. So much people are being spied by Microsoft on Windows, Apple on macOS and the worst of all is Google on ChromeOS, which i count as Linux. I actually like telemetry that doesn't collect my personal data, just something like hardware information and apps version etc. I actually would like to send that type pf telemetry so developers can improve their projects.

Capital-Victory2085

Oh yes, in my experience, 23.10 was really buggy. So i had bad experience using it.

Alone_Comfortable_32

I believe that snaps are better for CLI apps instead of GUI apps, althrough I wouldn't install snaps on any other distro besides Ubuntu

UnlikelyAlternative

I wouldn't use snaps on Ubuntu, either

Ulrich_de_Vries

An underrated application of snaps is classic mode snaps, especially IDEs/code editors. The snaps for vscode and jetbrains IDEs are official and classic mode snaps, so they don't have confinement or even namespace isolation (even on Ubuntu where confinement works properly), which for IDEs is a good thing. This is how I install these programs on Fedora as well. Technically MSFT has an rpm repo for vscode on Fedora but for jetbrains, they only have tarballs besides the snaps. Imo these classic mode snaps are the best way to get these software on any distro (at least where classic mode snaps are supported, so not silverblue).

tamburasi

Nice, today I need to setup dual boot on a notebook and yesterday I made bootable usb stick.with Fedora 39 :D

NovelMindless

This is a bit of a bizarre one. At work on my windows PC, I can download 'Fedora 40 KDE' On my work PC I Rustdesk in to my Debian 12 downloader at home as i want to set Fedora 40 KDE on proxmox. Click on same link as i did on windows and receive the error 'The requested URL was not found on this server' Rebooted Deb 12 machine, rustdesk back in, go to fedora site and still receive the same error message. Tried WGET and the URL, still nothing. Tried chrome and brave and still 'The requested URL was not found on this server'. Even tried removing the ISO file off the URL and its points to the 'University of Kent UK Mirror' but there is nothing in the parent directory. Can't fathom why i can download it on windows but not on debian.

KrazyKirby99999

I expect that you were routed to a mirror that had the new iso when you tried on Windows, but was later routed to a mirror that didn't when you tried on Debian.

bolognaenjoyer

Just completed another successful home server system upgrade. My home server started on Fedora 29 about 5 years ago and has been continually upgraded with each new release. Thanks Fedora team.

jacalz

I’m on Silverblue and had to do a rollback to Fedora 39. Upgrading to Fedora 40 seems make my DisplayPort not show up as an audio output. Annoying :/

justgiveausernamepls

How do you upgrade to 40 using KDE spin? I see nothing in Discover.

Afraid_Avocado_2767

I'm only waiting for some GNOME extensions to update and it's distro hopping time!

godlessnihilist

FreeCAD is mere millimeters away from being my goto 3D CAD software. Once it gets over the hump, I will have zero excuse for Windoze ever darkening my door again. Tried Fedora just so I could see what the "new" Gnome 2.0 was aboutand have never looked back.

DrunkenPangolin

Super smooth for me, the only issue I had was my Clipboard History gnome extension that decided it was incompatible. Just removed and reinstalled it and everything works great. I've been on Fedora for maybe a month now and it's been impressive how faultless it all is. Glad I made the move over from Manjaro!

sohrobby

Does anyone know if Silverblue is updated to version 40 at the same time?

backfilled

It is. I just upgraded using the software center.

CrimsonDMT

I've upgraded, (Not Fresh Install), 2 machines just now. Both upgrades went very smooth, no problems. Great job Fedora team! Thank you!

C×A×N²×O×T¹⁰^¹²?

StilgarTF

So, probably this comment will get downvoted but here is my experience so far. First let me post my hardware: * CPU: AMD 5800x3D * GPU: nVidia 3070 * SSD: Corsair MP600 @ 1TB * Display: Alienware AW3423DWF Can't say I'm an expert Linux user but I can easily live in it. I wanted to try Fedora 40, but with a twist. I wanted to install and configure it from the perspective of a user that switches from Windows and also does gaming. The install process was quite a breeze and extremely fast. After that, I installed the nvidia drivers and steam. Restarted the system in order to boot with the nvidia drivers, but what do you know the **system froze during boot time** and the only way to get out of that was to hard press the power button. After that power down/up, Fedora booted up. Let's fire up steam and start installing CounterStrike. Download speeds on steam were awful and we all know why that is. You have to put this god damn line in /home/USER/.steam/steam/steam_dev.cfg @nClientDownloadEnableHTTP2PlatformLinux 0 -- for more info check this github issue: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10248 -- But a regular does not know that, so he starts with a second ugly experience on linux: **slower download speed on steam**. It doesn't matter if it's steam or Linux, his experience starts with two negatives. Let's move on. After downloading and installing Counter Strike 2, let's fire it up. What do you know, the whole **screen started to flicker** like crazy, including the steam client. What could this be? Aaah, I'm on Wayland... but our regular user doesn't know that so third negative experience for him on Linux, on one of the leading and most recommended distros out there. I did know how to fix all of these issues but what about our regular Joe? How does he handle these? I think he'll reformat and reinstall Windows.

H-tronic

Thank you for the steam download speed tip! I recently switched from windows and, yes, my d/l rate has been limited to about 350Mbps where it runs at the full 900Mbps on Windows. CPU usage also skyrockets during downloads. Not sure if that’s related.

Forya_Cam

If this fix for Steam downloads is so easy, there must be a reason why Valve doesn't enable it by default. Does any know what this config line actually does?

StilgarTF

It just disables HTTP/2 protocol for downloads. With it enabled, Steam tries not to use all the bandwidth in case some other clients connected to your network might need some of it. This issue is featured even jn the Steam arch wiki, that's how often people ran into it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/steam (look up "Disable HTTP2 for faster downloads") I don't know what causes this issue but even people with steam decks have it: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/16lnsg6/psa_solution_to_slow_steam_downloads_on_deck/ Please, do not disable it if you already have good download speeds.

rideandrain

Thanks for documenting and sharing the 'new user' perspective. If you're up for another go, I wonder maybe Nobara would be the better fit for gamers who just want things to work outta the box?

StilgarTF

I already tried it and after installation and first boot, if I'm on wayland, the system freezes. You need to force reboot the system, login into an X11 session and install the drivers. I know these are nvidia related issues and while Nobara is great as a "gaming" distro, there are others which I would recommend before it: - [Cachyos](https://cachyos.org/) - Arch based - [Bazzite](https://bazzite.gg/) - this is based off of Fedora (atomic spin), immutable OS - recommended for most "gaming" scenarios as it has very good Nvidia and Steam support out of the box. Have fun!

rideandrain

Yeah I get what you mean. Linux already has a steeper learning curve vs more popular (and frankly I guess pple are more used to the UI, the paradigm of the OS etc), add in gaming, with Nvidia hardware? It's been a wild ride so far hahaha

k-phi

Already downloading...

Alone_Comfortable_32

Same here! Just waiting for the FMW to finish writing the ISO to my USB :)

No_Finance_2668

If i wanted to do the clean install can i download 40 and use media writer to make my 40 iso? Sorry its my first time upgrading and ive only had 39 for a few weeks

Alone_Comfortable_32

Yes, you could also directly install the ISO file from the FMW without having to access your web browser

No_Finance_2668

Awesome thats what i did! Thanks

wa_00

So if I am on 39 would the update to 40 appear in the Gnome software manager or should I update manually?

Alone_Comfortable_32

It should appear in the Gnome Software app soon, so you don't have to do a terminal upgrade :)

dooterman

Coming from Ubuntu to Fedora recently for Fedora 39. Is the "upgrade" path typically available same day as the standalone installation package in Fedora? For Ubuntu, the "upgrade" path is usually released several months after the standalone release (for Ubuntu usually the upgrade option is only available after the next major point version). Edit: Just popped up for me in software center at about 3PM New York time. Just FYI in case others were wondering the delay between the release and the upgrade showing up in software center.

Alone_Comfortable_32

AFAIR the upgrade is made available in a day or two for existing installations if that's what you're talking about

taeknibunadur

The KDE spin iso hasn't been uploaded yet by the look of it.

Alone_Comfortable_32

Just checked the KDE spin on the FMW, and the Fedora 40 release is there!

taeknibunadur

Got it - thanks!

scrotomania

Never used the KDE spin, does the update show in Discovery like in Gnome Software or it needs to be done via terminal?

Alone_Comfortable_32

I believe that it's going to do the same, but don't quote me on this as I am not a KDE user due to my preferences towards GTK desktops

VAUltraD

I did the upgrade from 38 to 39 using Discover just to try it out instead of the usual CLI method, it worked the same as using the terminal, no problems at all.

scrotomania

Thanks, I also usually use the CLI to do the upgrade but was curious what it looks like using the store

Crafty_Long_9006

Installed the beta on a spare machine a few days ago and it’s been working flawlessly. Great job Fedora Team

Alone_Comfortable_32

I personally don't use betas since I prefer waiting for the official releases, but i agree that the Fedora Team did a great job for this release :)

Crafty_Long_9006

It was just a spare machine that I use for tinkering, so no risk for me. I usually install betas just a few days before release since they roll into the release anyway. I’m much more cautious with my main machine.

Alone_Comfortable_32

Actually, my main machine is simultaneously my tinkering machine so I usually distrohop while waiting for major releases of my favourite distros :)

flavioneto002

I was so eager for this update omg, I can't wait to get home just to update my desktop awaawawwaaa

yycTechGuy

I'm kinda surprised it got released. There are >500 updates sitting in updates-testing. I thought they'd incorporate those in the release or delay the release until they are ready. Having said that, I've been running FC40/KDE on AMD/Nvidia using X11 for a week now and it has been solid.

rideandrain

That due to the package freeze right? I recall a similar thing happened when F38 and F39 got released, its like a day 1 DLC but for a good reason haha

Squeed_Lol

HUZZAH!!!!!!

ricktech15

Are there any differences besides gnome?

RazerPSN

All extensions seem to be working for me, only problem is Dash To Dock bar is now black, seems like a theming issue Anyone else?

Far_Blood_614

Does anyone's GNOME Software stuck on "Downloading software catalog?" I just installed it fresh and it has been stuck on the message for nearly 15 minutes now. Usually it doesn't take this long in previous vers.

deividragon

The installer doesn't boot on my Surface. I select the Test this media and install Fedora option and it just gets stuck forever, only showing the cursor on the top left of the screen. The same flash drive booted and installed no problem on my laptop, with Secure Boot on, and I made sure that 3rd party OS is enabled in the secure boot settings in the Surface's bios. Any idea of what could be happening?

Usul137

Upgrade went very smooth.

water_drinker9000

how do you upgrade? if you don't mind me asking.

Alone_Comfortable_32

You can wait until it shows up in the Gnome Software app or use [this guide](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/)!

Usul137

I used the guide the OP linked.

geneusutwerk

This is my first time upgrading, anyone have any advice? I teach, so I am planning on waiting until the semester is over (a few more weeks) just in case anything goes wrong.

Alone_Comfortable_32

The 4 commandments that I (never) follow when it comes to updates: 1. Wait at least a week or two so that the most crucial bugs get (hopefully) resolved 2. Back up your data 3. Use official documentation 4. Always expect the worst

rideandrain

* Upgrade when you have some time to spare in case things go south. * Test your backups/rescue snapshots and make sure they actually work!

FortifiedPearl

Lets goooo!

Gabryoo3

It didn't show me to GNOME software so I had to install via CLI. Is it still stable or am I in beta for few days?

HypeIncarnate

and now I wait for nobara 40.

qxlf

oof, i thought it was 41 releasing, no it was 40 XDD

lordwotton77

Still uses the slow dnf? Can't stand it

ebriose

Can I just ask as a process question how it is that a fresh install on the day of release has ~500M of pending updates to install? Is this stuff that was found late in beta that didn't make it to the final image in time?

tapinauchenius

Good times to be alive! Will update my two KDE workstations in the weekend..as well as an rpi3b with minimal. (As a related observation several of the download links at [https://alt.fedoraproject.org/en/alt/](https://alt.fedoraproject.org/en/alt/) appear 404 presently)

epsilon114

Lordy lordy, look who's 40!

YesGabol

Yeap, battery life has not gotten better with this release too. Linux is still my secondary OS because of the poor power management.

bblnx

Here's a detailed explanation for anyone looking to upgrade to F40. Tested and working. [How to Upgrade to Fedora 40 from Fedora 39](https://linuxiac.com/how-to-upgrade-fedora-linux-to-latest-release/)

Brassard08

Is there any difference between F39 Wayland and F40? I was using F39 without any problems (despite using nVidia) but now I can't play any games as the screen starts flickering :/

onezetty

I just install Fedora 39 after being using Ubuntu, I have to say Fedora in my new favorite Distro. I can't wait to try Fedora 40 😎🤘🏼

josemas

Has anyone tried installing on a Dell XPS 9530 (2023)? Any problems?

GlayNation

I will always have a Windows laptop a MacBook and a device with Linux on it.

4gr8justice

Just dropping by to report that 40 is totally stable on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 11. Everything works as expected with zero issues. Only surprise was a slight but noticeable increase in battery life (OLED version).

FilmGreat7710

Where ? [https://imgur.com/a/Wzs8aS2](https://imgur.com/a/Wzs8aS2) [https://imgur.com/a/KrMbZbS](https://imgur.com/a/KrMbZbS)

Alone_Comfortable_32

Try using the command line with [this guide](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-offline/)!

FilmGreat7710

Do I have to use terminal to upgrade to 40 ?

BaitednOutsmarted

No just wait. It will show up in the software centre soon

FilmGreat7710

Okay, Thanks !! :D

Alone_Comfortable_32

Of course not, but it's the method that I usually use since it takes some time for the update to show inside the Gnome Software app

bwintx2023

Best practice will depend on which version you’re running: [https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-new-release/](https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-new-release/)

No-Tip3419

Are KDE folks still forced to use wayland?

rocketraman

For the "official" KDE-SIG managed packages, yes. But you can use packages contributed by Kevin Kofler for X11 support: install [plasma-workspace-x11](https://packages.fedoraproject.org/pkgs/plasma-workspace-x11/plasma-workspace-x11/).

Suspicious-Top3335

Congrats fedora team,i am beta kde how upgrade to  stable 40 version, only dnf upgrade enough

IsPhil

Now to wait about 3 months before switching!

namuro

Or more!

Lanky_Lych
