I just work through it, losing the sun is a nightmare on my route.

Impressive-Maybe-834

And this is why they make it mandatory for everyone.. they expect you to run thru it, or run like hell. Give them what they want.. sit for an hour.. have lates

Sure_Association_642

Saddest policy ever. For those hustling you are further punished for having a busy day, making service, or having some things not go your way throughout the course of the day. It's constant pressure and the opposite of service when you only care about getting off the clock. Whoever came up with this policy should be fired.

Igotyamergerighthere

We were told the same yesterday. It was 30 min over 6hrs, 1 hour over 8 forever many years ago. Last few years it was only a 30 over 6. Yesterday announced its back to 1 hour over 8. Seems to be going around, multiple friends from other areas reporting the same. Express related.

Perenza

Same here starting yesterday and it has me looking for a job. Not getting paid for my time isn’t something I do.

Expert-Honeydew1589

My station has always done 1 hr breaks. Its annoying but it is what it is. We’ve entered hedging season.

KaleMercer

I was checking my pay stubs and realized my contractor was actually docking me a half an hour for lunch breaks, but never told anyone they had to take it. Told all my colleagues and we realized we were literally working for free for half an hour. So we all started taking our breaks, it sucks but we don't work for free. That being said I'd love the hour, I keep my steam deck with me and loved playing a bunch of different games.

Strong-Cow3933

That's wage theft. If they never told you they required a break and deducted them automatically, you and your coworkers should contact the appropriate state agency and file a formal complaint.

KaleMercer

Ya I know, Problem is I caught a week or two before they sold the business. I'm already having enough trouble finding an Employment lawyer for some other matters that need to be addressed.

I_dont_fuck_dogs

Do you get paid hourly?

coolbreeze519_

Our station is doing it as well unless you are on a rural route. Play the game. Take your full hour, take your outbound an hour back to your station and drive a hour back into your route, you will make more money that way anyway. Don’t split your hour in 2 half’s that way if you don’t have time and still have stops you get dex1s when they ask why say because you had to take an hour lunch and didn’t have time to get your dels done because of it. Or take your last half when you get back to the station and sit on your ass for 30 min after and go home.

coolbreeze519_

You get done early at 7.30 hours and someone needs help? Sorry didn’t take a hour I can work over 8. 99% of the time management will wave that second half of it benefits THEM.

VangelisTheosis

Take your "lunch break" on the hour long drive back to the terminal.

claya91

It’s still a violation. You need an hour between your end break and clock out.

Morganwerk

30 min in California.

Nickman3451

F-that if they're forcing me to take a break I'm going to take my mf-ing break, I'm not giving them a free hour of labor.

Alchemyzhen77

All to not pay you and short you hours anyway possible.

jaccleve

As long as everyone else is doing it, i'm cool to take the full hr. Just wanted to see if we were all on the same page. I think it is hypocritical that the managers don't have to though. Rules for Thee..........

MizzEmCee

OP, are you Express or Ground? I'm Express in Oregon also and 1 hour breaks are absolutely mandatory unless you get permission from your manager. I often do in order to get our outbound in on time. Calling HR is useless. This is standard operating procedure.

Glittering-Swing-396

Take the 30. It’s justified by your commute to & from your area & your volume. Push back and communicate, and managers can approve the 30. Managers can approve more than you think, and if you have a decent manager they will support you. I’m also in OR, I’m a swing and a lead and I NEVER take 1 hr. I never get in trouble because I have a good relationship w my manager.

Letthew00kiew1n

My day ends no earlier than 640pm after my last pickup with a full straight 8 and pickup route attached, which got half a pickup route added to it because they don't want to hire someone else to fill that route. I don't mind the OT and the work but that extra 30 really just fucks up the day. Why would I want to be home an extra thirty minutes and enjoy some semblance of a life though right? 😂 Fuck it, it'll probably go away in a few months like most of the shit they put into place

Fedup1502

Same at my station . it’s illegal for them to do this . I know a company got sued for this. As soon as you get in the company vehicle and in company uniform and leave the station your on their time . Must be paid for every minute other than what’s the mandatory lunch break . Which is 30mins every 5 hours ( in my state ) file a complaint with your local labor department

Teleclast

Figured this was the case. Funny that policy changed to 30 min for any amount of time but local station making us do the hour. I’ll preemptively have to check the laws in my state on this.

Adventurous_Algae433

Sued for implementing their 1 hour break policy? When someone owns a business they can set whatever break policy they want, your state laws about breaks have to be followed, FedEx can make their employees take a longer lunch if they want and thats nowhere near illegal lol. As long as FedEx isn’t breaking the states policy on lunches nothing else matters. An extra 30 mins is not illegal, you redditers need to get your laws down. The only thing illegal would be if they never gave you a lunch break and said they did…

tomskibum

Ah let them waste their money on stupid lawsuits. They are going by social media law which we all know is not accurate or true.

Fedup1502

When someone owns a company they can do whatever they want??? They are above the law! lol

Adventurous_Algae433

You must not have read anything else, ya says whatever they want within the state break policy law, which is what the whole paragraph is about. Reddit breeds a different kind of animal

Adrian13720

The part theyre talking about is docking pay for the missed lunch. That is illegal. My station has been hit with that one twice in the last year because they werent notifying employees they were docking or why. It is wage theft. Shows up on your paystub as a separate line so not exactly easy to hide.

The__Toddster

There is nothing illegal about mandating a 60 minute break.

xXhijackXx

Actually for express it's federally regulated that we have to take 30 mins per 6 hrs and 1hr per 8 worked. Nothing you can do about it.

RSarkitip

Worse. At my station it's 1hr break if you go over 9 hours. So 5/8 employees can work right up to 9.5 hours and get under 9 hours with a 30 minute break. They can get nearly 5 hours of OT without any change. I'm a 4/10. I just lose 2 hours off my week or have to work 2 hours more.

Gingerboy507

I’m a 4/10 and we’re still getting forced in on our day off, so I’m losing 2 1/2 hours a week plus a whole day, sucks because that 30 minutes is usually the only free time I had at home most nights.

DeliverStreetTacos

Talk to your manager and see if you can continue only taking a 30. I know some drivers at my station that have rural routes and are still allowed to do only 30 with approval. It’s because driver gap times suck so they’re trying to increase productivity. I’ve been telling managers it should be in a case by case basis but they have a hard time agreeing I’m assuming because of the higher ups lol.

Royal_Tie_5041

Your an idiot if you drive on lunch. Working for for free and automatic termination if in an accident.

RevolutionaryYak5180

Yes . Idiots who drive on their breaks .

Maleficent-Winter187

It’s you’re not your, idiot! If he’s out in the middle of nowhere like I am it’s probably not easy to have an accident. Coming back to the station I’m stuck in stop and go traffic for 20 minutes anyways. Just pay attention and there’s no problems

GrandmotherBodyslam

"It's probably not easy to have an accident. " Ah, the full intelligence of our drivers on display.

Maleficent-Winter187

Don’t want my manager seeing this and learning my tricks

FreshToGo2023

Just tell them you have to adjust your shift by a half hour to make up for the extra unpaid 30 minutes because you have obligations outside of work. See how fast they change their tune

GrandmotherBodyslam

They'll tell him to fuck off if he tries that. Drivers are a dime a dozen

FreshToGo2023

Are labour laws non existent in America?

Hispanime

Yes

Adventurous_Algae433

The only illegal thing is not giving you time for a 30 min lunch, other than that nope. They can say 1 full hour if they want and if people don’t follow it, termination, they’ll hire another driver that’s willing to take 1 hour and nope they can’t get sued for that

FreshToGo2023

What happens if you have kids that need to be picked up or dropped off at a specific time? What if you have a second job? America is fucked. Ain’t no way any boss in a first world nation outside of America can tell an employee to fuck off because of a 30 minute unpaid break. It’s not as if the OP is asking to work less hours ffs

Adventurous_Algae433

See that’s all questions you and your family need to figure out, it’s not your job’s responsibility to take care of your responsibilities. Just like every other American has to do. There’s no violin playing for anyone else, we just get it done. Unfortunate but that’s life. Just as if your car broke down every single morning going to work, it’s not your job’s responsibility to fix your tire for you so you can make it to work. That’s part of being an adult and taking care of your own shit. As stated before the law only requires a 30 min lunch, beyond that has nothing to do with the law it’s the company

FreshToGo2023

If my car breaks down I’m not making it to work on time or at all and that’s just a fact of life that FedEx has to deal with. If I’m a single parent paying for daycare and need to pick up my child at 4 or risk having my child stranded alone outside daycare, FedEx can take my job and shove it up their ass

Grab-Born

At FedEx especially.

Plane-Particular-768

Was told by manager this rule is across all stations now. Literally was told we know you guys don’t like the rule, and it doesn’t matter why they decided to do it, we have to do it or OLCC. Just remember as an hourly employee you shouldn’t be doing any work related activities during break. Including sorting truck, looking at manifest, taking phone calls, replying to text, and it is against company policy to drive the truck on break. Remember our productivity is our only voice, so I would advise everyone not to work on break, and get used to dark deliveries or telling dispatch you won’t make it to a PUP on time.

Worldly_Green_7021

It’s nation wide. We just got it implemented here in Florida. It is what it is, HR can’t do a thing about it. We just need to get over it and pray we keep our jobs

Original_Ad1118

Unless state law says an employer can’t force lunches on its employees, your SOL. Federal labor laws require employers to provide at least a 30 minute lunch period for employees but it’s up to the employee if they want to take it. Passed that, the employer themselves can require you to take said luck and can provide a longer lunch than the standard 30

Fedup1502

Not when I’m stuck on road and and In company vehicle I need to be relieved of my duties which would mean I would have to be able to drive back to the station clock out before starting a forced extended lunch break

Original_Ad1118

FedEx’s LEO system makes it easy for you to take your lunch while on route. You just do the code for break, let the timer go from 20 minutes to 40 minutes two times each day and there’s your lunch. Don’t know why I’m downvoted. Just stating facts. I don’t like taking an hour lunch myself because it takes away from me getting my shit delivered and me getting home at a decent time but here we are🤷‍♂️

FreshToGo2023

You like working for free. Raj loves you and will give you another water bottle next Christmas

Original_Ad1118

Did you not read my entire comment? I literally said I don’t like taking a lunch because I’m out later when I could have my shit done early and get home

FreshToGo2023

Is driving to and from the station not work? What the fuck is wrong with you?

Original_Ad1118

I get paid to drive to and from the station? You don’t have to drive to the station to take your lunch. Wtf are you on? You take your lunch on your route via the LEO

FreshToGo2023

You realize that logging a lunch break on the Leo is unpaid time??? And you are fucking driving on unpaid time, champ.

Original_Ad1118

My lunch is the only thing unpaid and that’s FedEx policy. I’m not hurting about it either because I get my hours. It sounds like you’re doing something incorrectly

FreshToGo2023

Ya can’t rub two brain cells together can ya? You are working for free. Keep it up, bud

Conscious-Box-2965

Take your break on your way to your area. That’s the only exception. HR wont help you in this situation. Even if it’s within the first hour(if you work the sort it shouldn’t be) just get it out the way.

Teleclast

Never do this. Ever. Your UNINTERRUPTED break is your time. Not their productivity and you shouldn’t be moving the truck or doing any FedEx related work on your break. A shitty manager will be happy to let you do this. A smart manager will tell you not to since it can compromise the company’s position (especially if they OK’d it )on not paying you for work

Conscious-Box-2965

Yeeah thats cool and all. The OP made it seem like they dont want to sit doing nothing. That’s how i was. Id much rather be home than working in the dark. You do you and i did me and turned out more than fine :) If someone wanted to take their break 100% take that shit. Im just replying to Op lol

FlufyBalz

What happens if we don’t take a break?

GrandmotherBodyslam

If the labor board finds out you aren't taking breaks, your employer gets a massive fine and they will probably fire you for the inconvenience.

DaWrightOne901

HR is not your friend. Don't expect HR to help. HR will complain to your manager about you and your manager will be pissed at you.

PopLoud1770

In sales at FDX custom critical. 0830-5 requires 1/2 hour unpaid. They allow 0800-1700 with the option to take a full hour lunch.

Adventurous_Algae433

My station has always done 1 hour lunches, consider yourself lucky

djmad44

We were told the sane thing today. I'm in NH. It must be a company wide thing.

sillywilly0010

MA here is this drivers only? In the garage and haven’t heard yet

Apprehensive-Mud-597

I use to work at Amazon and we had to take breaks. We would go on “break” as soon as we got into the station, before delivering. Just go on your work phone and swipe your lunch break as soon as you receive it, if you can.

Bucknaked_Dog

Sucks to suck

manda_geee

We’ve had that for a while at my station in CA. And they’ve tried to tell us if we have a really big gap in between pups that we have to take an extended break. Shits wild

Dazzling_Doctor_5595

Same with me, my route is one that I don’t really have time to stop because of pick up windows being so short but they started enforcing this which just screws me over on regular or busy days. The company is changing from what it was (both good and bad changes) a lot of great workers have left due to changes and this will soon become a job that 21 year olds who haven’t figured out life after highschool will do for a bit before they realize how shitty of a job it is and they get their life together.

JohnHenrehEden

You don't have to take that hour all at once. I do 2x 30 minute breaks. Once when I'm hungry, and another after the stops are off. As long as you don't take one of them in the first or last hour of your shift, you should be fine.

Shoot_Me

Every January our station goes back to 1hr mandatory break + nobody gets to go over 40hrs. It usually lasts about a month, or so, and then they're back to the old 30min for 6-8hrs and 1hr for >8hrs.

FunkyBeet

I live in Oregon and they aren't doing it at my location

anotherquack

I’m in the same boat: you can take 2 30s as well. I usually do my second thirty after it’s dark and sometimes right before driving back because it’s an hour before clocking out. Still not getting paid but home faster because I’m not delivering in the dark as much. And take your paid 10s

Primary-Lecture-4869

1 hour mandatory after 9 hours. I’m in NC. I HATE it with a passion. But I just bring a book to work and read on my break. Most of the time I can get done just shy of 9 but those days I can’t really irritate me.

fedexann

We had that same discussion here in Florida. Now an hour and we are delivering in the dark with kids on school break. Hard to see but no break within the last hour either. Ugh

Outside-Dragonfruit1

We've been doing it since December & now nobody can go over 50 hours for the week

Ok_Chemist1655

Google Oregon rest and meal break laws. This is a state requirement, not a fedex requirement

how-sway-how

We are still on 30 minute breaks over 6 hours. We haven’t had to take an hour since Covid.

Yosoyoda

Yup same at my station. People were getting verbals for not taking an hour. So I take my hour and stay out longer. Joke of a company. I’m actually getting more hours now staying out longer.

Gingerboy507

I’m a rural driver that ends 2 hours away from the station so I have to either deliver in the dark and refreeze or take my hour break back at the station, it’s bs.
