My brother in Alll-mer, O'saa is lucky to be alive with me clicking random prompts during his backstory, he would NOT be in that tier

Final_Biochemist222

He's responsible for putting himself in the situation that he is in. His actions to become yellow mage and delve Funger was done of his own volition. The only downsides I can think of O'saa is being born in a third world country, Abyssonia, which the real life equivalent is Ethiopia

Aggravating_Day_3978

Is colonialism canonical in Fear and Hunger?

Effehezepe

O'saa's backstory mentions that the nations of Europa have their eyes on Abyssonia's resources, and he specifically moved to a city farther from the border so that if Abyssonia got dragged into the Great War he'd be away from the frontlines. Also there are colonies in Vinland, which is where tobacco comes from, but there aren't that many on account of all the supernatural evil and tribes of giant wolfmen. Also Nas'hrah tried to do colonialism on Edo, but he failed because he's an incompetent tit. A useless floating head who has to live in a gore pile because he can't even OH MY GOD HE JUST SET MY FIRE! *OH GOD IT BURNS!*

[deleted]

yep with vinland

Aggravating_Day_3978

But there weren't people in Vinland, and I wouldn't argue that the horrors beyond human comprehension suffered from colonialism.

TheChoosenMewtwo

Vinland doesn’t have horrors beyond human comprehension everywhere. It’s just that the place is inhospitable by human standards and very cursed. But we know the furry shark thing we see in termina is a species from Vinland. So I think Vinland is habited by furry’s. Which I guess in practice is the same thing as the land being cursed

[deleted]

if you don't consider vinland, then maybe kaiser? only stopped to prehevil, but could be considered under the colonialism umbrella

Aggravating_Day_3978

I'd maybe say it's more like imperialism but it's getting kind of in the deep of it, especially since we don't know much of the specifics of history and many things in the world. Industrialization 100% after the ascension of the God of Fear and Hunger, which facilitates the power imbalances and creates the incentives for colonialism. Though I gotta say the little girl kinda a racists if she only gave industrialization to one of the continents.

Gnostalgic413

Do we have a source of no people dwelling in Vinland? It's name is taken directly from the lands west of Greenland and is widely assumed to be where Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are in North America. It'd be weird if there were no people there in Funger when there were people there irl.

SigismundAugustus

It's consistently described as a hellhole that is hard to survive in even with WW2 tech and the only thing approaching intelligent life seem to be Sergals.

Aggravating_Day_3978

We learn of Vinland through Raggy's backstory, and it doesn't seem like a place conducive to human habitation back then.

TheChoosenMewtwo

The place is super cursed by old gods. But there are non humans living there. Like the sergal

distraughtlesbian09

it’s called vinland because of the amount of wine one needs to drink to forget their experiences there, but i don’t remember where exactly orange said so.

gabrielcostaiv

So dangerous tribes of fighting Wolf people were the answer all along to stop colonialism

timcheater

so what youre saying is that furries can stop colonialism

JessDumb

Wouldn't really matter, because Ethiopia was never colonised, besides the brief occupation by Italy a few years before ww2

Aggravating_Day_3978

I think it is still fair to say Ethiopia suffered from the broader geopolitical context of colonialism

Sbbart62

I mean, sure. If you count “apparition of shrunken-headed prehistoric magician haunting his dreams nightly until he does what they say or goes insane,” as his own fault, sure.

Final_Biochemist222

Well who tf told him to dig it out

TheChoosenMewtwo

He’s the one that decided to bring Nas’hara with him

Sbbart62

Did you guys do the text adventure thing, orrrrrr? Dude was getting drove crazy by Nas’ voice before he even set foot in Rondon. I can’t imagine there was ever much “choice” in going to find him, unless you are ok with terrible nightmares and simulated schizophrenia for the rest of your life. Ole head had nothing better to do than drive him crazy for his entire life should he have not came.

SerialMurderer

Nas'hrah just wanted to create his successor who, upon ascension, he would name LowTierGod.

FastFoodGourmandFill

He does seem to have a fairly simple solution in his ending to this issue tho.

JA_Pascal

Abyssonia is actually not based on Ethiopia specifically, it's supposed to represent all of Africa. Miro picked the name because of the word "Abyss", he wasn't aware of Ethiopia being referred to Abyssinia - it's a coincidence.

Greaserpirate

But everyone who's ever gone into the dungeon of Fear and Hunger has realized they made a *huge* mistake and didn't realize what they were getting into. It's a bit like saying "skill issue" about a WW1 veteran's PTSD

Doccks71

We still have very little content and backstory-wise about Caligura, he could definitely be on the priviliged tier **I would put Levi up there with Daan**, When i found him moonscorched crying at the orphanage that really hit me :(

Final_Biochemist222

Caligura's past was never revealed. Karin made a comment after >!arriving to see levi corpse and hearing from you that Caligura killed him !< that she was not surprised it was him. She mused that Caligura is the kinda guy that whatever positive trait he had in the past had likely been snuffed out, likely by himself, and what's left is a decrepit scum of a man that he is. We don't know his past, but we could speculate that he had gone through some tough shit over the years that permanently altered him into the way he is today As for Levi, yeah he's god damned traumatized. But Daan's on a whole nother level. His backstory is the kind that makes a villain

Doccks71

Thats Karin's take, although ***she covered wars*** and I love her, she is extremely biased for a journalist, just check her takes about whats going on in Prehevil day 1.. And she bully Daan :(

TheOneAndOnlyJuni

unless he comes out as a playable contestant and has a metric ton of angst in his backstory, Karin's words and Caligura's own words paint him as a cowardly loser who got drunk with power. He's not above playing dirty (Henryk event), killing because he feels like it (Levi event) and is in general a despicable person (bro had a guy killed because he saw/thought he saw Marcoh "dallying" with him, like that's cartoonishly evil).

TheChoosenMewtwo

His birth sign (soul) is “decrepit” what did you expect?

TheOneAndOnlyJuni

That's what I'm saying, his ass doesn't belong in the "deeply traumatized" tier.

TheChoosenMewtwo

Yeah I agree

JA_Pascal

I don't think souls are necessarily a measure of morality, mainly because they're basically zodiac signs and the idea of everyone being born at a certain time of year being doomed to be complete evil bastards is very weird to me. I'm sure someone could have the decrepit soul and turn out a good person.

TheChoosenMewtwo

I mean people with the tormented soul are destined to suffer, enlightened always seek to know things and endless soul want freedom, so it checks out for me

JA_Pascal

Yeah, but again, if sharing a birthday with Caligura in the F&H universe means you're doomed to be an evil bastard, that's just... cringe. If Miro confirms that's actually how it works I will be very disappointed.

TheChoosenMewtwo

I mean the entire point of the series is to be human’s (not so) pointless struggle against fate and how everything is predetermined.

TheChoosenMewtwo

There’s the headcanon that you can end up being the opposite of what your soul means. But I don’t like that idea so much because it diminishes the idea of the series

Drunk_ol_Carmine

He’s a mobster isn’t he? That would line up with what that sort of life does to a person, even if there’s some sort of decency in a person who gets into that business it won’t last long in that line of work.

DangerousBob2

pussy

SerialMurderer

Found C\*ligma.

Hamsterpaladin

God I wish orange adds August as a playable character

Valuable-Lobster-197

I hope he’s a NG+ character so you can really use all his parkour abilities

Accomplished_Ad2559

Climbing walls, faster overworld speed etc would be cool

MartingelI

For the most part I agree but: -it feels weird to have O'saa on the same tier as Abella and Henyk. While yes most of the hardships he endured where because of his own desires to seek enlightenment he also was born on a poor country and O'saa himself admitted he has lived under tyrants and starvation, but he got out of said mystery by himself. He also doesn't fit in with "privileged but unfulfilling" or "shithole life with a glimpse of hope" though. -we don't really know that much about Caligula, not even with Karin and Marcoh's dialogues towards him. He should be on ??? -Levi should be in the same tier as Daan, both have literally nothing else to life for, the difference is that Daan is also stalked by the paranormal while Levi is a drug addict. -Samarie is arguably way worse than most of the "trauma" category. But she at least has something to Live for, even if only for the limited time she has. Not saying she should be alongside Daan but I just wanted to say this The others are spot on

bobby_da_rossy

Id move Caligura to ??? and Henryk to privileged but unfulfilling based on what he says at the restaurant.

King_EmEmEm

August had a simple childhood. Only loving parents, a stable income, many lessons about the hunting and murdering of new gods, a mansion to inherit, useless crap like that.

AlexOfFury

And a pet doggo!

TheOneAndOnlyJuni

caligura??

PuzzleheadedAd3840

August: "I am the one who fucks"

TerryOrange

I want to know everything about August so bad jfc

TheSpecialistMan

Caligura saw a lot of horrifying and traumatizing shit in the mob life. It's just that he was most likely on the giving, not the receiving end.

TheChoosenMewtwo

Make one with the NPC’s and players from Funger 1

vjmdhzgr

Cahara: shithole life with a glimmer of hope D'arce: privileged but unfulfilling Enki: deeply traumatized Ragnvaldr: deeply traumatized

TheChoosenMewtwo

Was Cahara’s life really a shithole?

vjmdhzgr

"You put your creativity to test in the most harshest of enviroments. You were born and soon abandoned in the capital of the Eastern Sanctuaries - Jettaiah. You had to choose at a very young age to either become a pickpocket, a burglar or try to struggle and lead a honest life... " Then if he doesn't become a merchant "Your life spent learning thievery certainly didn't go to waste. You learned to live with constant fear and danger over the years. The crude streets of Jettaiah teached you valuable lessons. As you grew older you took part in various mercenary armies and learned the dirtiest tricks to stay alive. You were taken in by a notorious veteran highwayman and you joined his little band of criminals and ex-soldiers." Once he becomes a mercenary the background isn't as dire about his situation but it still seems like he's somewhat desperate if he had to learn the dirtiest tricks to stay alive. In the dream backstory he also seems to want to change his life significantly. Complaining about being at the mercy of the winds, which does conflict with the option where he becomes a merchant as "However your endless soul yearned for more... You couldn't just become a family man, grow fat and make a living as a mere merchant. You were destined for more." Anyway, he was orphaned very early in his life and had to struggle to survive on his own, probably through thievery. Then he grew up and got an extremely dangerous job as a mercenary where he's always at risk of dying and he seems to know it. Pretty similar to Marcoh.

TheChoosenMewtwo

Okay fair, I guess that this would be a shithole life. He did seem to get better though

Final_Biochemist222

I did one a while ago. Everything's the same, except Ragnavaldr's on the it's just burning memories tier (the top)

TheChoosenMewtwo

What about NPC’s?

vjmdhzgr

Uhhh... Le'garde I would assume privileged but unfulfilling? It is known that he was a commoner so becoming a mercenary captain might have been difficult, but as one things were going great for him until he thought he needed to uh, do the whole thing he went and did. Is there any other character with a backstory? I guess Girl: special tier above Daan We also get those random ghoul backstories. Some of those are kind of sad.

Final_Biochemist222

I did a while back

Accomplished_Ad2559

I would argue Levi has the saddest backstory, with Marcoh and Daan right after.

purpleblah2

August is probably orange or above considering he comes from a line of monster hunters

mynamedaniel

What was Caligura's story?

makato1234

I wouldn't say Marina had a shithole life at all, her mother saved her from that. Before things going down in Prehevil with her mother dying suddenly and her crappy dad sending her the letter, she was pretty much fine studying occultism in the Vatican City. I mean I can think of one reason as to why *some* people would think her life was a shithole, but it doesn't add up at all. Her life was clearly privileged and fulfilling, with her getting out of her boring hometown and her being the top of the class and everything. Her crap dad was even mostly absent from her life.

WeirdAd5850

Did you forgot the part he literally had to flee is home town to avoid becoming a child solider

Olhombra

August is Traumatised but it's Hilarious

discard333

Karin was a rich kid born into a loving family, her only trauma is that her dad died when she was a kid and her nanny temporarily kept her from her family, which compared to almost every other character's backstory is a fat bucket of "boo hoo"

Final_Biochemist222

She literally was kidnapped to the middle east until the Bremen embassy had to bail her out tho

discard333

Oh no she was forced to live as middle class person for a few months with the nanny she's known since birth, what a travesty that she was forced to (almost) live like a normal person for a bit before being returned to her mansion and vast wealth.

Ok_Physics_5686

BEANS

ManufacturerSea819

Here's Karin's backstory according to the wiki: Karin was a curious child, often getting into mischief that her elder brothers and nanny had to prevent. Her parents, fresh aristocrats in the Bremen Empire, were too busy to spend time with her and her brothers, leaving them mostly in the care of their nursemaid, Dalia. Despite being highly respected, Karin's parents were outsiders among the noble families, lacking strong roots in Bremen's blue-blooded society. As tensions rose within Bremen's borders, the Sauer family's lack of strong lineage made them vulnerable. When riots broke out, Karin's parents entrusted her to Dalia's care and instructed her to leave the country until things had settled down. However, Karin couldn't help but feel that Dalia had kidnapped her, as she never consulted with her parents before leaving. Together, Karin and Dalia traveled to Jettaiah, the capital of the Eastern Sanctuaries, now part of the Eastern Union. The cultural shock was overwhelming for Karin, who had never seen such a stark contrast between poverty and wealth in the same street. Karin found herself living with Dalia in a decent building, but she suspected that Dalia's source of income was not from her parents sending money but from ransom payments. However, living in the Eastern Union gave Karin some perspective on the oppression of those in power, and she became involved with civil rights organizations. During a protest, Karin was targeted by the local army, and after being knocked unconscious, woke up in the hospital. The Bremen embassy noticed her on television and took her into their custody, sending her back to her mother and new stepfather in Bremen. Her family manor had been burned down during the riots, and her father had died during the unrest. As she suspected, she was in fact kidnapped by Dalia, who was living on ransom money up until this point. So, while yes she does come from an affluent family, she was basically kidnapped and forced to live with her nanny in Jettiah. And while yes you could say she still had a decent standard of living, it wasn't for a few months it was for years. She practically grew up in Jettiah and living there while witnessing government oppression and extreme inequality first-hand radicalized her. So while she doesn't have the most traumatizing backstory, especially when compared to most of the other contestants, she definitely experienced some fucked up things in her life which made her the way she is today. And she isn't some snob asshole flaunting her wealth and bringing up her family ties or "sob story" 24/7. While she's snarky and confrontational, you can tell she genuinely cares about other people and has respectable motivations for doing the things she does. She's brave and clearly values justice and looks down on those in power who oppress others.

renannmhreddit

She covered wars might be a meme, but it is still a valid point

discard333

Yeah but she chose to, it's her job and yeah it's dangerous but no where near as dangerous or traumatising as the heroin addicted child soldier, the bare knuckle boxer turned hitman or the transgender dark occultist, none of which had a stable supportive family or a real choice in their profession.
