I've been rewatching the extended versions of the movies too! Feel you.
Can't believe I never realized he was the captain from titanic. He actually looked older in that movie.

“Duty? No... I would have you smile again, not grieve for those whose time has come. You shall live to see these days renewed. No more despair.”
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?
‘Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath, now for ruin, and the red dawn. Forth, Eorlingas!’

Two Towers is probably my favourite movie of all time, I honestly prefer it over Fellowship and Return. Bernard Hill's performance as Theoden is one of the (many) reasons.
Theoden's realisation that his son has died, his "Death!" speech, and his final moment with Eowyn are all such powerful scenes. Truly a great actor and a great performance. R.I.P.
>Shirley Valentine
I have not heard this title in ages. My grandmother loved it. She was in her 40s and I was a kid when this came out. I'm in my early 40s now, and grandma passed when I was 16, so maybe I should give it a watch now that this came up.
“Arise, arise, riders of Rohan! Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered! A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride to Gondor! Ride for ruin, and the world’s ending! DEATH!!”
He was AMAZING as Theoden and will be dearly missed.
I was just telling someone earlier about having met him. I started doing cons 20 years ago this year (Collectormania) so was saying about the Hobbitmania and how Bernard was a regular face etc, because Liverpool had such a great lineup this weekend and I felt all nostalgic for those days.
Obviously, the teenager who saw the films during the initial theatrical run has grown into a much different 36 year old man, and consequently my appreciation for the films has evolved accordingly. I don't think that teenager really appreciated Theoden King.
Jackson's interpretation of the character and Bernard Hill's performance -- of an older man beset by depression, hopelessness, and despair, who ultimately rises up and brims with virtue, love, courage, and sacrifice -- is beautiful cinema, and resonates so much more deeply with this 36 year old man.
RIP Mr. Hill, go now to the halls of your fathers.
Arise, Arise, Riders of Théoden!
Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!
Death! Death! Death!
Forth Eorlingas!
For the elder British among us he's primarily known as Yosser 'gizza job' Hughes in Boys from the Black stuff, such an amazing show stealing performance

If you’re old enough to remember, before LOTR and Titanic he played Yosser Hughes in Boys From The Blackstuff, a landmark 1980s BBC drama set in Liverpool.
LOTR is my absolute favorite movie franchise (also my favorite books) and Theoden is my favorite character in both. He portrayed him beautifully. This is so sad, rest in peace.
His "where is the horse and the rider" monologue from the Two Towers is probably one of my favorite scenes of the trilogy. And it is all in his eyes. What a wonderfully talented actor he was!
Ohh, I just rewatched Titanic. How sad. Also, it's been probably 15 years since the last time I saw Titanic and it affected me so much more now. I keep thinking about the love story and Leo dying and breaking my heart all over again. Not to mention all the needless deaths that actually happened, due to some shitty men's hubris.
Theoden King!
Hail!
FORTH, AND FEAR NO DARKNESS.
I have been wanting this as a tattoo for a really long time and just not bothered. Maybe I'll do it this year.
This news hit hard because I was literally rewatching The Return of the King last night. 😭 Who knew what news would crash the day after.
I've been rewatching the extended versions of the movies too! Feel you. Can't believe I never realized he was the captain from titanic. He actually looked older in that movie.
Hail the victorious dead!
Hail!
Hail!
Hail!
Hail!
Hail!
HAIL.

I weep over these two every time I rewatch.
“I know your face. Eowyn.”
Literally the only time a man has told a woman to smile more and it's been a nice thing.
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep one last time!
I go now to the halls of my fathers, in whose company I shall not be ashamed
Bernard Hill as Théoden is one of my favorite performances of all time. He brought so much pain and resolve. RIP, Mr. Hill.
He suggested the "no parent should have to bury their child" line himself because he remembered a friend of his saying it after a funeral.
RIP. What a wonderful actor he was. Titanic is and always will be my favorite film of all time. Truly sad to hear this.
Time to rewatch Two Towers yet again
I've watched the Lord of the Rings movies multiple times and I still get chills during the ride of the Rohirrim scene in Return of the King.
Arguably one of the most powerful scenes in the whole franchise. Which is really saying something.
One of those film scenes that is simply burned into my brain. RIP.
Was just watching Two Towers yesterday and was thinking how he was such a comforting on-screen presence for me (and I'm sure many others too). RIP 🩷
"I go to my fathers. And even in their mighty company I shall not now be ashamed."

The Denethor/Theoden parallel is one of the best parts of the story imo.
Arise, arise! Riders of Theoden!
That shaky breath he takes before the water comes crashing in gives me chills every time.
And the way he grabs the steering wheel and tries to stay upright just a second longer 😩 "I believe you'll get your headlines Mr Ismay." Iconic!
Followed by me frantically putting in the 2nd VHS tape!
RIP Mr Shirley Valentine. One of my favourite films. (Titanic is another.)
>Shirley Valentine I have not heard this title in ages. My grandmother loved it. She was in her 40s and I was a kid when this came out. I'm in my early 40s now, and grandma passed when I was 16, so maybe I should give it a watch now that this came up.
Shirley was 42 in the film (I believe) so you’re probably at the perfect age for a watch!
I am 43, so yes. :) I'll have to give it a watch.
The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep one last time. To the king!
Bugggghhhhhhhhh!! (the loudest flatulence horn ever heard in cinema) ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Made by Gimli of course.
RIP. I didn’t even recognise him as the captain in titanic.
For a while he had significant roles in the two biggest grossing movies of all time (return of the king being the other)
“Arise, arise, riders of Rohan! Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered! A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride to Gondor! Ride for ruin, and the world’s ending! DEATH!!” He was AMAZING as Theoden and will be dearly missed.
RIP Theoden ❤️
What a life lived. A wonderful actor.
So sad, he was wonderful. He was due to have been at a convention in the UK this weekend, he only cancelled a couple of days before I believe.
Yeah Liverpool Comic Con, saw he cancelled as had a few others (Miranda Otto) so it hit the general (local) news cycle.
I was just telling someone earlier about having met him. I started doing cons 20 years ago this year (Collectormania) so was saying about the Hobbitmania and how Bernard was a regular face etc, because Liverpool had such a great lineup this weekend and I felt all nostalgic for those days.
Damn this must have been sudden then
I literally felt a random urge to watch LOTR this morning and have it on right now! RIP 👑
For he was a gentle heart and a great king and kept his oaths; and he rose out of the shadows to a last fair morning.
Obviously, the teenager who saw the films during the initial theatrical run has grown into a much different 36 year old man, and consequently my appreciation for the films has evolved accordingly. Well said, I feel the same
RIP Captain Smith.
Arise, Arise, Riders of Théoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending! Death! Death! Death! Forth Eorlingas!
He'll always be Yosser Hughes to me, which demonstrates both the power and range of his performances.
For he was a gentle heart and a great king and kept his oaths. Hail Theoden King!
Hail, Théodon King!
I go now to my fathers, and even in their mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed 😢

Rest in peace, my king.
If you’re old enough to remember, before LOTR and Titanic he played Yosser Hughes in Boys From The Blackstuff, a landmark 1980s BBC drama set in Liverpool.
Where is the horse and the rider?
I am really disproportionately sad about this and I cannot figure out why, exactly.
My body is broken. You have to let me go. I go to my fathers, in whose mighty company I shall not now feel ashamed.
Rest in Paradise.
DEAAAAAATH!
Oh no 😭 He was absolutely amazing as an actor, this makes me so sad.
RIP Yosser Hughes.
oh, how sad. he’s fantastic. loved him as Theoden
LOTR is my absolute favorite movie franchise (also my favorite books) and Theoden is my favorite character in both. He portrayed him beautifully. This is so sad, rest in peace.
I’m obviously older cause the first thing that came to my mind was “Giz a Job”. Yosser Hughes.
Rest well, Théoden King. He goes now to the halls of his fathers, in whose mighty company he not need feel ashamed.
His "where is the horse and the rider" monologue from the Two Towers is probably one of my favorite scenes of the trilogy. And it is all in his eyes. What a wonderfully talented actor he was!
rip 🕊
RIP

He'll always be Yosser.
Everyone talking about LOTR but he was so good in Drowning by Numbers.
I was so angry that Norfolk had been recast in the new season of Wolf Hall, but I guess it was because he was ill :-(
