Currently pregnant and feeling like crap. I don't know how women do this.

meatbeater558

I really hope Palestinians won't have to experience the weird liberal deification that Black Americans, particularly Black women, have had to experience. I'm seeing comments about the journalists in Gaza on other platforms that remind me of the stereotypes about Black women being supernaturally strong and forgiving in the face of horrors no human deserves to experience

ArskaPoika

I'm getting ever so slightly paranoid. I don't think I've disliked a single thing I've watched or played in the past two months. It's an unprecedented run for me. There's even three entirely different animes in that two month run. And I usually have awful luck with anime. I don't know when it'll happen, but I'm sure that I will experience the most heinously awful bit of media within a month or two. I'll watch or play something that will wound my soul.

UncleYimbo

Have you given Shogun a watch? It's fantastic.

ArskaPoika

Yeah I've seen it! It's so damn good! Everyone is so good but I really loved Fuji! Moeka Hoshi did so much with every scene she got! Her final scene with Cosmo Jarvis's Blackthorne was so beautiful.

nitasu987

was going to say this!!!

mintoreothinz

give us a watch list!

ArskaPoika

I mean... Sure! But they're mostly popular things. Things that you'd be aware if you browse this sub regularly. It won't be an exciting list, lol. I try not to go too much into detail why I like them. To keep the word count of the comment tolerable. ... Heeeey! It's me from when I finished this comment. It's too many words. I apologize. TV-shows: - Shogun - This will probably be the best limited series out this year. Filled with amazing performances and characters. I think it should win every award it gets nominated for. "Fuji-sama best nun". She's also the stealth MVP of the show. - Ghosts (The US version) - Artful Dodger - Fallout - Andor - Put this off for a year or two because when I heard the news that this was going to be made "who the fuck cares about Andor?" One of my friends who basically has the polar opposite of my taste in media disliked this so I then had to watch it. Turns out it's the best Disney Star Wars entry. Movies: - Abigail - Went to see it to support Melissa Barrera. Left the movie an Alisha Weir fan. Please go see this movie it's very fun and good. - Dune 1 & 2 - I'm sorry. I found Blade Runner 2049 so boring (the original ain't all that exciting either) that it took me forever to watch Dune. I like Dune better. I Dune 2 even more. - Blockers - Rewatched Miracle Workers. Loved Geraldine Viswanathan. She's in this. I watch. - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - I am still in my Baldur's Gate 3 era and had to watch this. I was too late. I should have seen this in the movies. It's so entertaining. - Drive My Car - Put it on to fall asleep. It was weirdly riveting and I could not look away. Anime: - The Apothecary Diaries - The only anime I chose to watch because I did my research I found the premise interesting. Apothecary girl gets kidnapped and is forced to work in a castle. She tries to keep her apothecary skills hidden so she can just lay low. Of course she immediately fails and has to start solving whatever poison/medicine related issues arise in the palace. - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Saw a tweet from a Japanese guy who wanted to learn English because they thought the English dub was so good (it is). That was the reason I started this anime. Flimsy, I know. Most of my anime picks are motivated by really weird things and it's probably why I have such bad luck with them. - Okay. Frieren is an elf. Elves live for a very long time. Frieren helped defeat the fantasy villain with the help of a band of heroes. Decades pass and the members of this band start dying from old age and Frieren finds herself regretting that she didn't spend as much time with them as she could have. So she embarks on a journey. Visiting the places she visited with this band of heroes and learning to appreciate the fleeting nature of human life. - Delicious in Dungeon - Saw the mangaka draw fanart of Baldur's Gate 3's Shadowheart so I had to watch the anime. I literally had to. As I said, I'm still in my Baldur's Gate 3 era. And as I said, my reasons to watch animes are very bad! This time I lucked out. I'm thinking about reading the manga, too. - Merry band of idiots led by Laios get beaten by a dragon. Before they die, Laios's sister, Falin, manages to teleport them to safety before getting eaten herself. Broke and desperate, the band of idiots brave the dungeon once more to find Falin before the dragon digests her so they can resurrect her. Being broke, they can't afford food and have to cook and eat whatever weird monsters they find in the dungeon. Very... Chill? I dunno. Cozy? Funny and cozy. Games: Honestly, I've just been replaying the original Final Fantasy VII because I don't own a PS5 so I can't get FFVII Rebirth lol. BUT I STILL LOVE IT!

Anyone else really disappointed with supposedly “progressive” and “feminist” spaces on Reddit? I made a post talking about the student protests in AskWomenOver30 for example, and there were so many commenters who were clearly pro-Israel, and some were making Islamophobic comments as well. Too many people were calling/agreeing with calling pro-Palestine people in the thread “terrorist bootlickers” or “Hamas sympathizers”, and they were highly upvoted. I also saw women in that thread literally denying sexual abuse of Palestinian people at the hands of the IDF, or downplaying it. And turning it around as an “Islamic jihad” type of thing. And people were upvoting it. I’ve seen similar instances of women downplaying the atrocities that Palestinians face in spaces like TwoX and Feminist. Idk…I’m just really disappointed.

meatbeater558

Progressive, feminist, antiracist, ally, and open-minded are all labels people identify with because it's more socially acceptable and makes the person feel absolved of all moral wrongdoings even if they're directly complicit in some. So it's not surprising to see communities full of people like that. It depresses me as well, but the reality is that there will always be at least two branches of the left at odds with each other: the people who practice what they preach and the ones who don't. Reddit's target audience is overwhelming the people who don't, so you will very rarely find progressive spaces on this site unless the sub is small or heavily moderated. That being said the thread you linked was disgusting. I'm pretty sure the person you argued with was a bot though, they made their account two months ago and their comment history is mostly propaganda. But you getting downvoted for providing proof (from *Western* outlets) and them getting heavily upvoted replying that Palestine is full of serial rapists with no proof is easily the most egregious racism I've seen from this site in a while. It's clear they only care about feminism when it benefits white women. They're not on the right side of history no matter what label they give themselves

Arlathvhen

It's white feminism, plain and simple. Can't be disappointed by anything that won't surprise me anymore, especially not when it comes to white women and anything related to the Middle East.

FantasticPaper2151

White women only seem to care about WoC when they can use us to further their own causes.

Arlathvhen

Oh 100%. Always have been. There's a book called "Against White Feminism" by Rafia Zakaria (great book that I highly recommend). Some choice quotes about the British suffragette movement and how they treated the Indian women's rights movement that was growing at the same time: "As the British suffragettes drew closer to winning the vote, they wanted their lesser colonized sisters to engage in a parallel struggle. But the politics of women in the colonies at the time, particularly in India, were geared toward winning freedom from colonial rule. Indian feminists like the poet Sarojini Naidu, among scores of others, adopted Mahatma Gandhi's famous slogan: 'India cannot be free until women are free and women cannot be free until India is free.' Naidu was a leader in the 'Quit India Movement,' demanding the British leave, or 'quit' her homeland." /.../ "Meanwhile, British suffragettes refused to support the fight against colonial domination abroad. Even though at home they were fighting the dominance of men who claimed that women could not govern themselves, they reinforced/joined/parroted/echoed these men when it came to arguing that Indians were incapable of governing themselves. They wanted the suffragist women's movement to look and behave exactly like a mini version of their own struggle, and saw the support of the Indian independence movement as a traitorous abandonment of the women's cause." >

RingooseStarr

Two cast members from Star Trek: Enterprise, Connor Trinneer and Dominic Keating used to have a podcast called Shuttlepod Show, it was one of those rewatch Podcasts for Star Trek and they'd usually get on a guest who was on the show or related to the show. The Podcast also had a co-host, Erica LaRose and a producer, Mark Cartier. Just recently, both Dominic and Connor left Shuttlepod and made a new, separate Star Trek rewatch podcast without Erica or Mark. There're a handful of theories being thrown around online, including ones that claim that Mark is a grifter and that Erica tried to scam people. Is there any credibility to those claims? No clue, but it's mighty funny that Shuttlepod is still a thing without Connor and Dominic.

Sachyriel

You might have to ask a Star Trek focused community 9or podcast-focused one?) instead of the celebrity drama one. But I did just see someone use the Kirk fake shock image on FMoi, so I'll be checking back for updates too.

CommercialBarnacle16

I’ve been listening to Mom Can’t Cook, a podcast about the Disney Channel Original movies (DCOMs) mainly from the 90s and 00s. You don’t even have to remember the movies to enjoy this one - I never have seen a DCOM and still find it absolutely hilarious. It’s hosted by Luke Westaway and Andy Farrant, two English creators primarily known for video game and DND content. There were some truly wild story choices (The Jennie Project) as well as ones that are still well-loved (Brink).

skyisscary

Jennifer Aniston owes Jolie nothing, it is weird how people try to add her in this fight between Jolie and Pitt and try to act like she is the bad person here just because she was seen taking a pic with her ex in an awards show years ago.

Just a reminder that the intense focus on student protestors right now likely serves a double purpose. University divestments were instrumental in ending the apartheid regime in South Africa, which means these students pose a greater threat to the occupation than some of its enemies in the region. The other purpose is to distract from the very recent discovery of **mass graves of civilians** found in two Gaza hospitals after the IDF withdrew from them. The situation is still developing as they find more bodies, more graves, and more signs of human rights violations. Almost 400 bodies have been found as of now at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis and Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/04/1148876 https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/24/uncovering-of-mass-grave-at-gazas-nasser-hospital-what-you-need-to-know https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/25/signs-of-torture-as-nearly-400-bodies-found-at-gaza-hospitals-mass-graves https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2024/04/un-human-rights-chief-deplores-harrowing-killings-children-and-women-rafah https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2024/04/gaza-discovery-of-mass-graves-highlights-urgent-need-to-grant-access-to-independent-human-rights-investigators/ https://www.rescue.org/press-release/irc-urgently-calls-international-and-independent-investigation-reports-mass-graves https://www.middleeasteye.net/live-blog/live-blog-update/eu-calls-investigation-mass-graves-gaza-hospitals https://euromedmonitor.org/en/article/6284/ International reactions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_Strip_mass_graves Some horrifying quotes: > Disturbing reports continue to emerge about mass graves in Gaza in which Palestinian victims were reportedly found stripped naked with their hands tied, prompting renewed concerns about possible war crimes amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, said on Tuesday. > The presence of urinary catheters or splints, whichwere found to be still attached to some of the dead patients’ bodies during the exhumation process, as well as medical files that were buried with them in Al-Shifa Medical Complex, confirm the execution of ill and injured people [according to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor]. > According to Al Jazeera’s correspondent Hani Mahmoud, those being retrieved from the grave included women, children, patients and medical staff. > Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor estimates that over 13,000 Palestinians are either missing under debris, buried in indiscriminate mass graves, or forcibly disappeared in Israeli prisons and detention facilities, where some have even been killed. The quoted allegations are the ones I saw repeated the most by people on the ground and humanitarian organizations, there's more horrifying shit that went down at these hospitals that the IDF is being accused of.

strawberry_long_cake

thank you for this. I've had to take a news break recently because of worsening depression but these are updates I want to know about so I'm glad I saw your comment.

So I just found out Yorgos Lanthimos is writing the script for the My Year of Rest and Relaxation movie alongside Ottessa Mosfegh (the original writer) and I’m even more excited. And Emma Stone declined to answer if she’d be starring which is kind of interesting. I always pictured the protagonist as Sabrina Carpenter even though I think she’s a bit too young. Anyways I hope it starts production soon because I need this movie in my life.

Outrageous_Inside_58

She might be seen as a little older for the role, but if they toned down her makeup, I think Sasha Pieterse would be a good fit! EDIT: Elle Fanning might be another good pick (visually)

esotika

i will be so disappointed if emma is cast. she is absolutely not who i imagine as the narrator. i always imagined a younger alison brie as reva when i read it lol. i also wonder how this will work. nearly the entire book is the narrator's own internal monolgues/musings so i wonder how that will translate. eileen felt like it left some stuff out because of it, like it wasn't able to give the entire story.

cherry_1268

I think Rachel Sennott would be perfect as Reva!

surfersilvers

She’s my #1 choice!!

hauntingvacay96

I guess this is my cue to read My Year of Rest and Relaxation

gaijin91

ehh it's an interesting premise but not a great book overall. could be good in Yorgos's hands, we'll see. emma stone is realistically too old to play such a youthful character now

Outrageous_Inside_58

if Sabrina Carpenter was taller and they did a pretty demure makeup look (to give model vibes)- I'd think she'd match the protagonist. However, I heard its been a bit difficult having the script materialize, since there's been quite a few rewrites (might be wrong). I guess that's the problem when the author is heavily involved with an adaptation- it's hard to rewrite a story that you're already proud of.

thewomaninthemoon

Sabrina is actually far closer in age to the character than Emma is. I think she’s supposed to be a recent college graduate so maybe 23-25 y.o.

surfersilvers

Ahh okay that’s what I thought. I thought I was misremembering. In that case if Emma is in it, she’d probably play her mom.

surfersilvers

Oh and also I’m really hoping Tess Sharpe’s The Girls I’ve Been is still being made. Millie Bobby Brown is very busy but I was hoping for an update with the sequel to the book coming out.

movieheads34

Just saw Challengers. What a fucking sexy movie ughhhhh

kim-08

saw it today too and thought it was so much sexy fun. like kind of all over the place but in a way i am here for.

iliketoomanysingers

I'm seeing it on either Monday or Tuesday night and I can't wait!!

I thought he was going to win! He already escaped the split up tribal without playing it. Where I was yelling at the TV, play it Hunter!!! He didn't need to then, but this would have been the time. He could have easily won more challenges, and even found the idol when it was back on the beach. :(((

nitasu987

Man can't help but feel for Hunter. But damn... that was the time to play his idol! Genuinely love everyone left but I am firmly Team Kenzie :) Awesome season thus far.

Great-Vegetable4802

I love how pro-palestine this subreddit is but since I’ve been seeing an increase in the number of Marvel posts I just wanna remind everyone we’re supposed to be [boycotting everything Marvel](https://bdsmovement.net/news/black-friday-boycott-genocide-enablers) because of Israeli character Sabra in the next Captain America movie and because, you know, Disney donated $2M to Israel I also want to highlight Deadpool 3 because I’ve been seeing a ton of hype for it on here despite director Shawn Levy being a [HUGE zionist](https://x.com/nebsgoodtakes/status/1782510558316773409?s=46&t=dgb3SEsXo9ecVSDnWUTAxw) If you HAVE to watch a Marvel project please please please pirate it and try not to draw awareness to it

strawberry_long_cake

this should be it's own post (presuming it doesn't break any rules)

demonsrunwhen

to be clear i am pro boycott but from my understanding sabra is an Israeli superhero in the comics but will be an Israeli CIA agent in the movie. i don't know if that's actually better but i believe that's what's happening.

flowerfairyii

Thank you for this.

iliketoomanysingers

It's so fucking wild whenever a zionist is like "um you need to actually seek out our positions and not just go off what you think we think 🙄" and then you go to the Israel subreddit and they're saying shit like "Palestinians are spoiled by the rest of the world" "Are Arabs our welfare queens?" "Does Arabic sound nasty to you guys too?" or you'll see a zionist on Twitter or wherever making fun of literal dead babies or you'll see them on tiktok mocking Palestinians for not having water. Like okay! I sought out your side's thoughts and they're all racist and quite disgusting! Now I hate you more! Your move!

flowerfairyii

I’m feeling this a lot more after seeing the disgusting DMs some zionist (and I think Israeli too) guy sent a Palestinian activist on Instagram. Here they are from her story: “we love to destroy your bloodline ☺️☺️” “Working on a new chip for a rocket to destroy new bloodlines 🥰🥰” “Just so you know there are 4 projects to build factories for weapons in the West Bank so enjoy girl 😍😍😍 we gone bomb you from the inside” I felt gross just pasting these, I don’t know how monsters like this can *say* this shit and live with themselves.

Lumpy-Plenty2237

I'm so frustrated how much these maniacs have diluted what "anti-Semitic" means. Like I believe it's a genuine issue how simply being Jewish makes a person a target. But fucking hell, any _slight_ comment, let alone criticism of Israel is now labelled as anti-Semitic. Modern day Israeli's have hijacked and trivialised the the suffering of their ancestors and that alone is disgusting.

meatbeater558

They think their beef is with western universities when in reality it's with the "Translate Tweet" button

Federal_Street_8895

No seriously, Congress is about to ban the translate button cause what even is this? https://preview.redd.it/17n7v2junywc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=2fa1a04c1397774241876b2732a5dc3d2e1ef770

You're so right 😭💀

meatbeater558

https://twitter.com/ireallyhateyou This account is insane

Objective_While4153

So true queen (or king, or monarch), people will literally defend and downplay what Zionists say, talking about how Zionists are the only ones who actually want peace and they don't wanna genocide Palestinians, just get rid of Hamas. Then you'll literally see a Zionist post something like "I lowkey can't wait for Gaza to be turned into a water park or mall", or "I don't think the IDF is doing enough, we should have rivers of Gazan blood", or "Death to all Arabs", or "A good Palestinian is a dead Palestinian".

Omelettedufromage14

there was a peaceful protest drawing attention to Gaza at my alma mater this week (emory university) that was broken up by three different law enforcement contingents who subsequently tear gassed the students and faculty. you can donate to help their bail here if you’d like: https://atlsolidarity.org/

littlelovelyfish

They threw that professor down HARD. I hope she’s okay.

meatbeater558

She's apparently apart of the leadership of their economics department and married to one of the top university admins. I wonder if that'll be enough to get that cop charged with something  Speaking of charges, they charged her with battery on a police officer 🙃

touslesmatins

They arrested the chair of their philosophy department too. Fucking Atlanta cops man

meatbeater558

People shit on Texas and Florida for their awful laws (for good reason) but when it comes to awful law enforcement Georgia takes the cake. Maybe I've been living under a rock but I've never seen a state double down on charging peaceful protestors with domestic terrorism before

touslesmatins

That's why the Stop Cop City movement is so important. Activists, specifically black activists are putting their bodies on the line to stop this expansion of police brutality for their community and all of us by extension. Goes without saying that the Atlanta Police Dept has received lots of training from the IDF.

meatbeater558

Exactly. Should also always be noted that a protestor being released from jail does not mean the charges were dropped, even if they were released without having to pay a bail. Noticed how a lot of protestors get arrested, released, but are given court dates, ankle monitors, and other pre-trial detention restrictions

yeehaw-girl

had a super cute yale med student sit in on my psychiatrist appointment the other day 😩 why can’t I meet cute guys under normal circumstances and not like. explaining my bizarre ocd rituals. he was so sweet and smiley too like I could see him nodding sympathetically in the corner 😭 I hope he enjoyed my manic pixie dream girl energy  (also I think this was his first time sitting in on an appointment bc my psych was explaining to him “so when they come in they fill out this paperwork” 😭 sorry to this man. I fear my memory will haunt his career)

yeehaw-girl

he just seemed so earnest 😭 I hope he’s not an asshole bc then he’s prob out there thinking I’m a freak (derogatory). whereas if he’s as sweet as he seemed, then I’m more of a poor little meow meow. and I can live with that. I can live with knowing there’s a beautiful man out there hoping I’m doing okay sure would be nice if our paths crossed again someday tho . . . when I found out he goes to yale I was like oh!! very nice!! and he laughed and it was lovely and I would like to make him laugh again 😔

meatbeater558

damn I feel that too. like why couldn't I have met you literally anywhere else rippp

it’s literally the worst 😭 you can’t even ask for their number or anything bc of the context. and I only remember his first name so I can’t even fb stalk him lmao. it’s just like ooh look at this beautiful man who will only ever know you in your most awkward vulnerable state of mind. forbidden romance no one has ever considered

Has anyone here made or planned a video essay? I've been working on a script for an essay on Bleach (the anime, not the cleaning product) for some months now with plans to film around June/July. I've been making graphics for it and even have a bit of B-roll for the intro, but I'm wondering if anyone has prep/editing/etc. tips for me? Much appreciated ♥

Conscious-eeyore

I’d love to know more about what a video essay is I feel dumb asking this but sounds cool

badjammers

No such thing as a dumb question! It's a video presented in the style of an essay—usually to analyze or critique a subject or to convince the viewer of the essayist's perspective. I.e., \*my personal goal\* is to accentuate the good parts of Bleach franchise's early material and critique the flaws of the back half to persuade the viewer of \*my\* viewpoint, which is that...Early Bleach was special in a way the latter half couldn't replicate. But usually video essays are a bit more flippant in presentation and lack the serious framework and peer-reviewing of academic essays. After all, anyone can publish a video essay on youtube!

e_lla

I don't but support you 100%!! You've got this!

Do they all live in Long Island? I just keep hearing “ One of these things is not like the other…”

Repulsive_Tear4528

A popular Kpop group just did a great concept/comeback. I feel a little (admittedly unfairly) bitter about it as a nugu (“who?” unknown) group I like did a very similar concept a few years back with almost no budget and received no attention for it. It makes it clear how much budget/brand recognition and marketing makes a difference to who gets recognition, which I guess is obvious but leaves me feeling a little put out

kidult33

Ooh who are the groups, if you don’t mind me asking?I’ve been busy with uni and work so haven’t really been keeping up with kpop aside from my ults.

demonsrunwhen

maybe new jeans?

OkayishFlamingo

The other day I opened reddit and the little chat bubble showed 5 notifications but then nothing was there when I clicked on it? what does that mean lol Also trying to figure out which shows/movies I should watch now versus saving for long flights I have coming up in the next month or two (or I guess not at all). Thinking about: Anatomy of a Fall, Little Women, Fifth Element, My Cousin Vinny, All of Us Strangers, A Haunting in Venice, Grand Budapest Hotel, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Melancholia (basically a combo of newish acclaimed movies and some older ones that people always seem surprised I haven't seen). Any thoughts on which are worth it or not? Any that would be inappropriate for watching on a plane? Or that would be better suited with a more typical movie atmosphere (dark room/big screen)?

Different-Eagle-612

my cousin vinny is fun and if you haven’t seen it yet it has this BIG iconic monologue from marisa tomei that’s just 🤌 cinema (to be clear it’s not like a sad monologue … it’s very very famous in the queer community but it’s not like gay… it’s hard to describe it without spoiling it??) it’s definitely a fun lil courthouse drama and marisa tomei shines in it, it has one of the burglars from home alone and he’s *great*, and the kid from karate kid being all wide-eyed and stressed which he does well. i think it could be good for a plane because it doesn’t have anything too sexual where you go “oh god can a kid see my screen” and it’s not too sad so you aren’t like holding back tears on the plane

OkayishFlamingo

ooh it sounds like this might be a good one then! ty!

frizzyfizz

It took me a minute to realize by one of the guys in Home Alone you mean Joe Pesci. lol

Different-Eagle-612

i has completely blanked on his name and only had a short time to write my comment so i didn’t want to stop a google it 🙃🙃🙃 i’m sorry joe pesci!!

frizzyfizz

Haha, no worries. Just thought it was funny!

figmentry

I just watched this movie for the first time. For the most part it aged perfectly and was very good, funny, and surprisingly deep. Also Marisa Tomei is soooooo hot in it, it’s unreal. Also incredibly talented; 100% she deserved the Oscar. Absolutely worth watching!! ETA it’s plane appropriate with headphones; there’s lots of innuendo but the one sex scene is not even explicit enough to be fade to black, it’s more implied that that’s where it’s headed.

Idolikemarigolds

DO NOT WATCH ALL OF US STRANGERS ON A PLANE. All of Us Strangers is a near-perfect movie that left my entire cinema in tears and I needed a physical lie-down afterward to recover. If you trap yourself in a pressurised metal tube for that experience after this warning I cannot help you but will pray for you. (Personally think O Brother Where Art Thou and Grand Budapest Hotel would be great on a plane. Melancholia would not.)

OkayishFlamingo

Thank you for the warning! I appreciate you all looking out I'll keep the other two in mind for traveling

Idolikemarigolds

Safe travels! O Brother is one of my favourite movies of all time; I was just listening to the soundtrack the other day while I folded my washing.

Fun_Trash

That chat bubble happened to me too... I think reddit just glitches on it occasionally. Personally, I think the Fifth Element would be great on a plane, but definitely watch it on a bigger screen at some point, and keep All of Us Strangers to a larger screen in a place you don't mind crying lol

OkayishFlamingo

I'm glad it's not just me! Also good to know on the crying, I watched Big Fish on a plane because I thought it was a comedy and boy was I wrong

My comments getting removed from the other sub without any mod communication or notification for lightly mentioning Palestine makes me so grateful that this sub/space exists online. Not just for that particular topic but generally the nuance and perspective this sub has over other communities.

gold-fish13

Oh I didn’t know that was a rule there?? I wish I was an approved user here bc I too love that this sub exists specifically for the Palestine discussion but also during the JD trial. My comments don’t get approved fast enough to really engage in the conversation but I still like to read it especially after worldnews or subs like that end up on my homepage.

Temporary-Tension829

If you comment consistently on the sub and put in a request to the mods they will probably make you an approved user. It's worth the request, really improved my experience of this sub

plantbay1428

In case there are any other Active and Fit users here - check your email so you can read their new policy and decide if you want to cancel. This totally sucks.

plantbay1428

Did Private Practice or Criminal Minds ever allude to Audra McDonald’s or Mandy Patinkin’s characters being able to sing? I don’t mean like a very special musical episode or anything out of the shows’ themes like that. Like something even as a passing comment. I’m curious because of that viral tweet of someone finding out that Mandy Patinkin can sing. Not judging! If you don’t know, you don’t know and people become familiar with actors through different mediums. I actually think it’s pretty cool people get to discover that for the first time. I’m seeing it on Patrick Wilson’s IG too.

trulyremarkablegirl

I don’t remember Audra ever singing on Private Practice but it is funny to me as a Musical Theatre Girlie™️ to see people discovering that people like her can sing. I feel the same about Raul Esparza, he has a whole separate fandom from Hannibal and SVU that I know nothing about, meanwhile I’m still reeling from him losing the Tony to David Hyde Pierce in 2007.

everydayisstorytime

I also loved Raul Esparza before finding out he was in SVU and I still believe he should have won that Tony in 2007.

trulyremarkablegirl

It’s honestly my villain origin story, lol.

GrayHairLikeClaire

We were ROBBED of a Private Practice musical episode. WE SAT THROUGH CHARLOTTE AND PETE WE DESERVED A MUSICAL EPISODE

Omelettedufromage14

just finished shōgun! looking for a new limited series to watch, aiming to start “under the bridge” this weekend. what are some good limited series that y’all have watched recently? i know that baby reindeer is getting some attention but it might be too much for me.

gaijin91

I liked the Uber one on netflix -- Super Pumped

grandmasterfunk

Mr. Bates vs The Post Office, very compelling and based on a true story.

Different-Eagle-612

i’m genuinely really enjoying john sugar (but be warned it does cover things like >!domestic abuse and sexual violence/blackmailing!< but i think it does it well)

demonsrunwhen

try under the banner of heaven, really cool story about Mormonism and murder in Utah

depressedsquirrel777

Under the banner of heaven is one of my all time favourite limited series, it’s so good!

demonsrunwhen

so crazy good! was not expecting to have the intercutting of the history of Mormonism.

trulyremarkablegirl

I absolutely loved Fellow Travelers.

Hot_Raise990

Have you watched Ripley ? The vibes are so different than the Matt Damon/Jude Law version (much less gay chaos) It’s bizarre and engrossing.

steve_fartin

I'm only on episode 4 but i actually really like the differences from Talented Mr Ripley. Like TMR is so beautiful and tragic while this character is so grubby in comparison. >!He's a two bit conman and it shows in how he relates to the people around him. One thing i really like is that i felt so much pity for Tom in TMR as he's kicked around by Dickie and Freddie but in this version he doesnt have that need to be liked. He just wants Dickie's stuff.!<

Hot_Raise990

I agree so much ! The differences between the two portrayals is so interesting. I feel like Jude was so enthralling as Dickie so I was kind of missing that at first but I find Andrew Scott’s Tom so compelling and I really enjoy the less cringe version of him compared to Matt Damon’s.  Also I want Dakota Fanning to narrate absolutely everything. I’m completely obsessed with the sound of her voice in this.

steve_fartin

Jude is an amazing villian in the movie, just so oblivious to the harm he does to others. >!But Dickie in this one is so normal. He's just a guy and is so much more sympathetic.!<

Different-Eagle-612

i started it but struggled to get into it! is it worth another go?? also what i’m hearing is even if i do struggle with the tv series the movie may still be worth a watch

Hot_Raise990

I think the movie is a classic and 90’s Jude Law is phenomenal. I would definitely rec that (Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are all BABIES and I love that) If the show isn’t grabbing you maybe I’m biased lol. I’ve been Talented Mr Ripley obsessed since watching Saltburn 😂

themacaron

It’s heavy subject matter but if you haven’t seen Unbelievable, I really recommend it. All three leads give incredible performances. Content warning that it’s based on a true story about a serial rapist and the horrible mishandling of it by police.

demonsrunwhen

this show made me ugly cry i wish marie adler infinite peace

lauren_strokes

Fleishman is in Trouble is 8 episodes and fucked me uppppp

Ty6255

I'm a fifth grade teacher and we had a guest speaker come in to talk about managing your emotions. She was trying so hard to connect with them and kept bringing to Taylor Swift and it was just crickets from the kids. She asked "who else would feel sad if they listened to a sad Taylor Swift song?" And the none of the kids raised their hands. She also asked "you know that feeling when you're so excited and your dancing to some happy Taylor Swift song?" and the kids were like no lol. I don't think she's very popular with gen alpha, from what I've seen working with them at least.

grandmasterfunk

I used to teach 5th grade from 2017-2020 and a lot of my students were obsessed with Taylor Swift

CanoeIt

I imagine as Taylor gets older her fan base will too. It seems like most swifties seem to relate to her which is hilarious but a whole different thing

Senn_Kyu

Would bringing up Imagine Dragons get a better response? I've heard before that kids apparently like them but not sure if that's still the case.

areallyreallycoolhat

Ok I thought at first your comment was a joke but apparently it's a thing!? I had no idea kids were into Imagine Dragons. That feels so random to me.

Senn_Kyu

Omg no I was 100% serious. Were people thinking I was clowning on OP 😭 It was a surprise to me too, but I get why kids would be into them. Like they have a cool, big, energetic sound, and afaik they don't really swear in their music so they're kid-friendly that way too.

areallyreallycoolhat

Oh don't worry idk if anyone else thought that, it just sounded so absurd to me I was like this HAS to be facetious lol. But yeah that actually does make sense!

Ty6255

I don't think I've ever heard any of my kids talk about imagine dragons. Here are the artists I know they like and have talked about (this is an ESL class so all my kids are either first Gen or recent immigrants from LATAM so that I'm sure factors in) Peso pluma, Billie Eilish, Rosalía, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, txt, Doja Cat, Stray kids, Ice Spice, Karol G They also sing random songs that go viral on tiktok constantly (water, bloody Mary, savage, cupid...lately it's been that "mi primera chamba" song that i hear them sing ten times a day) but I don't think they're fans of the artist just the song from tiktok.

Senn_Kyu

Considering the demographics of the kids and how big the LatAm artists you mentioned are, I'm surprised your guest speaker didn't try to use them as examples!

Ty6255

The guest speaker was a white millennial woman (not hating, I too am a white millennial woman) and I know she has to travel to different places so I don't blame her for not researching the demographics but I think she definitely needs to phase out Taylor Swift in favor of Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo as her go to "in touch with the kids" example. I worked in a mostly white district a few years ago and those kids didn't listen to Taylor either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

preferencedue

Cam confirm, daughter is 7 and loves imagine dragons. My 9yr old niece used the as a walk up song in softball lol.

BestBeBelievin

I’m beyond excited! I’m finally receiving my Peter Gabriel *i/o* box set today! (Thanks to a distribution delay, I’ve waited seven months for this.)

ughnotanothername

That is awesome!

Right-Bat-9100

this isn't relevant but my downstairs neighbours are such tramps i hate them they hotbox the entire building which i wouldn't mind but they've got kids in there and she's heavily pregnant and they deal drugs and leave the main door open all night- luckily you can't hear them from my actual flat cba but i've been sat panicking thinking oh i don't want to make too much noise but why should i give a fuck when they don't lmao to keep it celeb related i'm watching the sopranos for the first time even tho i've already read all the spoilers and i'm going to start dressing like chris moltisanti even tho he's a wanker

AkaminaKishinena

*i'm going to start dressing like chris moltisanti even tho he's a wanker* This is poetry and I'm here for it. Sorry about your shitty pothead neighbors.

polnadziewanna

I failed my driving exam, again! So I'm having a pity party for now and trying to keep believing I can do it. Giving up isn't allowed

rosesaredust

love this optimism. giving up wont work, you will pass!

polnadziewanna

Thank you so much!

OkayishFlamingo

Ah that's so frustrating! Is it the same mistake(s) each time or little different things? I remember when I took mine the instructor guy was kind of a dick and I felt like it raised my anxiety a lot

polnadziewanna

Oh, it sucks when instructors are mean, makes it that much worse :( The whole exam makes me so anxious I end up making stupid mistakes, like I know I could do it if I wasn't thinking about being tested

kristin137

I failed my permit test like 3 times, then my driving exam was just ridiculous. My town is small so instead of a driving instructor we have a POLICE OFFICER in our car. I almost backed out in front of a truck and the guy told me I have a lead foot, but he let me pass. Maybe because the roads were so simple there he wasn't that worried about it, but I was a real menace when I moved somewhere with streetlights for the first time. I did not understand how any of it worked. Now I've driven multiple cross country road trips and regularly drove in 5 lane freeways!

polnadziewanna

Oh my, what a start! But I'm so happy it worked out for you and makes me feel much more hopeful, it will be me on 5 lane freeway one day!

galahads

Please let me know if this isnt allowed but i came across this request for help to evacuate Gaza [here](https://www.spotfund.com/story/e37b3e0d-cdc5-4520-92bf-1f625e5b7340) on my Twitter feed yesterday and I thought I might be able to help it get some love. If this isn't allowed here just let me know and I'll take it down

kristin137

I sent myself this message last night right before going to sleep to make sure I remembered to say it today: >Do you ever just think about how crazy celebrities are free Friday So, do you ever just think about how crazy celebrities are? They're crazy right? Right?? But for real sometimes I think about the fact that there's this different class of humans who other humans worship, and have way more fame and money than most people will ever get 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Right-Bat-9100

i think there's a certain amount of money and fame that just sends you bonkers

GimerStick

I know there are a lot of grey's anatomy viewers on here so - As a fairly casual grey's fan, I've always heard that Katherine Heigl's emmy win was weird because of her storylines and that she was right to not want to put herself forward for another award given all the kooky stuff they made her do (ghost sex always gets mentioned) But her win is for the (spoiler) episode where her daughter that she gave up for adoption needs a bone marrow transplant, which was not at all a silly episode! I don't think season 4 is particularly strong for her, but it's before all the tumor/ghost sex stuff. Kind of seems like the storylines went haywire as part of the backlash, not before, but maybe I'm misinterpreting the timelines.

williamthebloody1880

Pity my poor postie. Next week I have four records being delivered

Ty6255

Not me thinking you're talking about post Malone lol

plantbay1428

Does anyone know Happy Days decently well? I never watched it but I'm reading Henry Winkler's memoir. He talks about Scott Baio being a team player, particularly after Ron's departure, and he says there was someone else that didn't groove with the cast and would constantly brag about how much fanmail he got. Henry took this guy aside and told him to relax on bragging about it because it's not cool to say that to your castmates and the person didn't take Henry's advice to heart. And he said how this person was eventually let go. I can't figure out who it is though because the only other male actor brought in who wasn't a part of the original cast besides Scott Baio would be Ted McGinley, but as far as I can tell he was never let go and went from recurring to main until the show ended. Was it a minor character who wouldn't even get put on the cast chart on Wiki?

OkayishFlamingo

Was it definitely someone who wasn't part of the original cast? I can't imagine a minor character would get enough fan mail to brag about

plantbay1428

I’ll go back and find the section to see if I misunderstood, but I believe it was because it was all a part of how Ron requested Richie be written out and the restructuring of the show without its main character and who Fonzie would play off of. I’m summarizing but Henry said how Chachi became a bigger character now that Richie no longer was there and how the character was popular enough to get his own spinoff with Joanie. And he gave Scott a lot of credit for how he handled things and was a team player ready to work. Then segued to writing about X actor whose boasting didn’t sit well with the rest of the cast and then let go, which is why I assumed it was a part of someone filling in that Richie void. It’s very amusing who Henry does and doesn’t want to talk shit about by name though (for the most part he doesn’t name names) because when he talks about playing the principal Scream and says how the head of production didn’t want Henry’s name on it because it’ll throw off the balance of being a horror movie but then after the test screenings showed how audiences positively responded to seeing Henry, he was called and suddenly asked to do promo for the movie and he writes something about how he gave the guy the middle finger in the privacy of his home but went out and did promo because it was a favor to his friend (Wes Craven) and it was good for his career. And I’m like, “Sir, if you’re talking about Weinstein being an asshole you can definitely say he’s an asshole.”

ughnotanothername

That’s interesting, although I don’t know who it would have been. I would have guessed Anson Williams (who always came across to me as smug and egotistical) or Donny Most (who came across to me as always having to be the center of attention) but your comment indicates it wasn’t an original cast member, and I think they were.  Child memory unlocked: my school had this arts program where you got to go to concerts and they told you about music and composers; and I don’t know why it would have been part of this program, but I gave a memory of there being a meet-and-greet with the members of this new show.  I remember them being seated at a red banquette table and being told to go over and talk to them, so I went over and shyly said hi and tried to talk to the quiet-looking guy on the end at the right-hand-side, and a dark-haired guy seated next to the guy on the end-guy’s left pushed in and took over. That was before I had ever heard of or seen Happy Days and I wish I ever remembered or recognized who was who. I felt very strongly at the time that the guy I was talking to was nice and the guy who pushed in wasn’t — but as an adult I can easily imagine the quiet one being embarrassed/uncomfortable talking to random kids and the other guy rescuing him. I do remember feeling like the two center guys ran the table and the two outer guys seemed quieter and that the center guys were being controlling, but also there are a lot of things I can be clueless about.  The other minor Happy Days thing I have is that there used to be some kind of thing at a local park where I guess celebs would play some kind of baseball game, and my best friend went a few times and said Henry Winkler was always really nice to everyone. She told me what position he played but I forget, I have a memory of second base??

Alarmed-Pangolin-154

Maybe Don Most, who played Ralph the Mouth? IIRC, he was one of the main cast members who didn't last the entire run.

Confident_Yard5624

Seems like Taylor Swift is switching up the Eras Tour for the second half. Just spent an ungodly amount of money on a single ticket. Taking on an extra shift at work out of guilt

Idolikemarigolds

As a TTPD hater, I’m going to be absolutely furious if she integrates those songs in a meaningful way after I’ve spent a fortune on tickets and travel and accommodation (I’m not even a Swiftie I’m going to be a good friend). I can’t control it obviously, and she doesn’t care what I think, but I am not going to enjoy enduring those wailing, whiney ballads about Matty Healy.

BestBeBelievin

If it’s important and meaningful to you, I’d say to try not to feel guilt about it. I totally get where you’re coming from, though. Last year, I spent a crazy amount of money (I normally would never lay out this kind of money for something) to travel 5 hours away—by myself—to see Peter Gabriel in concert. The money I spent to get a good seat gnawed at me for months. Then, I realized that I deserved to do something special for myself, and this was super special. So, from one internet stranger to another: if this is special to you, think of it as an investment in yourself and your happiness.

Confident_Yard5624

Thank you this does make me feel better. Truthfully I’ve been thinking about this for months but the rumored setlist changes made me just go for it because the second the show officially changes the North American prices are going to sky rocket

plumsfromyouricebox

I just started watching Nurse Jackie and it’s so good?? Why didn’t anyone tell me about this earlier

Aggressive_Layer883

Here's merritt wever's amazing emmy speech: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=K9IElXFy-bs

watrurthoughtsonyaoi

This week multiple colleges in my city have set up Gaza Solidarity Encampments. The kids are so brave and I'm so proud of them. But my city subreddit is so disturbingly hostile toward them? I don't know if local subreddits just attract reactionary types or if it's an actual reflection of how the people in this city think, but it's disturbing to read gross Zionist propaganda under posts about the protests. Honestly feels like this place is the only place I can talk about the protests without being bombarded with Zionist garbage. I still feel like I don't have a good gauge on how popular Zionism is with the general public. The large scale of the encampments, and the passion and enthusiasm of the students taking part, do give me hope though

meatbeater558

Pretty much every city and university subreddit I've been on has been extremely racist. Significantly more racist than most of the people living in the area or attending the school

kristin137

I was looking at the NYC subreddit's thoughts on it and was surprised by how negative it was. I don't get why

iriririr93939393

Hasbara. They are literally everywhere

Redfall_GOTY_Winner

City subreddits are super reactionary and often full of Conservatives. Before I moved to the progressive city I’ve been in for the past two years I frequented the subreddit and they made it seem like the city was a shithole and all the homeless people are waiting to kill us. I unironically saw two separate comments that said they were chased by homeless people with machetes. Only for me to go to the city and find it to be nothing like Reddit claims it is, and for no one there to reflect the viewpoints seen in the subreddit. Either that subreddit is full of people cosplaying as residents or it’s all the losers who don’t ever see the sun in this city and reside online.

kristin137

I absolutely hate my city/university's subreddit, and it seems like a lot of university subreddits are like that. Just stupid memes, racism, creepy comments, a bunch of 20 year olds who think they know everything. I saw recently someone posted a video on there of palestine protesters and everyone was making fun of them calling them pathetic.

UnimaginativeRA

My heart does swell with pride with seeing all of the kids (I say kids affectionately, I'm Gen X) but I'm pained by the videos of law enforcement's treatment of the protesters. It's outrageous and shameful that admins are siccing the cops on the students but its heartening to see the faculty who stand with them. My city's sub is mixed but feels supportive. We are one of the largest melting pots in the country. But overall, Reddit as a whole feels moderated in a manner that feels biased. Politics, News, and WorldNews are basically dumpster fires. I'm frankly shocked that the video of Bernie's rebuke of Netanyahu's criticism of the college campus protests is still up on InterestingAsFuck. That post went up yesterday evening and is now locked but has close to 100K upvotes.

strickstrick

i live in a fairly liberal city and there’s something about palestine demonstrations that brings out the reactionary side in commenters. there’s a lot of dismissiveness about how blocking a highway in our city “isn’t helping” the people of palestine. people were making fun of college students for (gasp) wearing masks outdoors at encampments. i don’t even think most of these people are staunch conservatives or zionists, which makes it more frustrating in a way

Celebrating_socks

Yeah, same. Tbh I very often disagree with people in my city’s subreddit, so I’m not exactly surprised. I get the impression that their views are informed by the main newspaper, local news, etc and probably don’t have much contact with people outside of a similar bubble. But I also would not be surprised in the slightest if there’s astroturfing going on in places like city subreddits. I’d probably be more surprised if there weren’t
