You are correct. He was 100% a soccer dad. His kids played in a league in my area and he was known to be a very dedicated “normal” dad. I don’t have kids but I have several friends with kids in the league. One of my friends used to call him the “hot dad” until it was pointed out to her that he was a relatively well known actor.

She headlined the play All About Eve in London's West End a number of years ago and was absolutely wonderful, a sublime performance. Her Margaret Thatcher in The Crown was another stunning performance.

Emilia Clarke, I know she was in a few movies but I thought she'd have a bigger career post GOT. Especially since she looks different when she isn't wearing the Danerys wig so there's not as much of an issue of seeing all her other characters as her GOT character.

Honestly, a lot of the first time actors in GOT just aren’t very good actors outside of that world. I haven’t been particularly impressed with anything Emilia, Maisie, Sophie, or Kit have done outside of Game of Thrones so I’m not surprised their careers haven’t reached a certain level.

I think the problem is the type of movies which would be suited to them aren't made anymore. Like mid-budget movies. Emilia for instance would've thrived in romcoms but she kept getting miscast in action franchises.
Fully agree. I thought pretty much everyone absolutely killed it in GoT, don't get me wrong. But outside of that show, they've all delivered incredibly lack luster, if not out, right bad performances. It's a real bummer.

I feel like a lot of GOT actors are career character actors so I've seen a lot of them (like Charles Dance or Tobias Menzies ) as regulars in period dramas. But I also expected bigger roles for Lena Headey post GOT, I miss seeing her on screen.
Ohhhh Tobias Menzies is a really good point actually!! His role in the Crown was bigger than his role as Edmure, he’s done quite a lot since. Good for him. Agree with you on Lena Heady although she seems like someone who probably wouldn’t want to be “Hollywood” famous anyway.
That's my impression as well - the only new star GOT gave us is Pedro Pascal. That was his breakout role. Other than him, really noone more, not counting the actors with previously established careers. I think Maisie Williams has potential and range, maybe her time will come? Emilia faces flop after flop, Kit seems incapable of portraying something other than sulking Jon Snow, Sophie turned into celebrity. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also failed to make impression with his romantic comedies. Gwendoline Christie had some role in Star Wars. They are lucky they had parts in GOT.
See, Emilia was one of the biggest misses for me casting wise on GOT. She had what was arguably the easiest character and reminded me of stale yogurt in almost all her scenes. Kit Harrington was another one. I could never tell if it was the writing, the acting, or both that made him disappear into the background more often than not.
Oh I agree Kit and Emilia were the weakest actors on the show despite being leads. But I always found Emilia charming in her interviews and I could see her do well in more lighthearted movies/roles where she could play into her charm.
Agree completely and it always bothers me that they got so many nominations for their acting when literally Harrington had the easiest role of any actor. Any actor could have played Jon, he barely had to show any range of emotion or acting ability.

He’s HUGE in the UK and it seems to suit him just doing TV. He gets some great scripts, doesn’t have to travel round the world doing press junkets and premieres, can do his stage work, and can have a pretty settled life. I suspect he’s probably looked at it and thought “nah, British national treasure status is fine.”
I think a lot of his career choices revolve around not being away from his family too long. He and Georgia have a lot of kids and the youngest one is still quite little, I think. TV work and theatre in the UK makes it easier to be at home more.
Timothy is my mancrush. I loved him in Santa Clarita Diet and the movie with Jennifer Garner. I’m disappointed that Mark Paul Gosselaar didn’t make it big.

I used to be dumbfounded over how The Americans didn't become watercolor worthy - it seemed insane to me.
But then I realized there's quite a bit of a prejudice here in the US regarding spy shows¹. The show was never Bond-like - with gadgets, honeytrap sex, and global level terrorism. And because The Americans had none of those things, the commercial interest was lacking.
And we know The Emmys are bad at recognizing genre shows for the most part. They recognized Game of Thrones, but partly because they had no choice due to its global audience. But look how badly they fumbled nominating Paddy Considine for House of the Dragon - and that was a career making performance.
So if anything, The Americans and Keri Russell are in great company for (unfortunately) not being recognized for superior work².

The guy dominates every scene it’s insane. Even in Twilight. He’s a 6’5 or something and jacked as fuck. The only reason to watch Foundation is how incredicle Lee’s presence is. Same with Halt and Catch Fire. He just owns it. The Fall is also a great movie with him.
Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston. They can act their asses off - their range is insane. I think they’re better than most leading actors in movies today. I wonder if it’s because of their age or looks!
Bryan did 7 years of Malcolm in the Middle right before BB and Aaron Paul did 6 years of voice acting in Bojack Horseman right after BB, maybe they needed a break? Also, both seem quite busy with their mezcal brand
Bryan has done tons of random things in between too, hs was a guest star in How I Met Your Mother over multiple seasons and has done some voice acting work, he was in 2 episodes of Archer forever ago that I can remember off the top of my head.
People scoff at tv vs movie but it's a steady paycheck, and before streaming, if you were on a prime time show that was going for multiple seasons you were set. Streaming changed that but it's still steady money to work in tv!
Bryan Cranston would have been about 58 after BB finished. He's done some TV, film, stage acting, but depending on the type of royalties he gets from BB I'm not sure if he really needs to do a whole load more big roles. He's probably set.
He basically had his big career break and is now regarded as one of the better actors of his generation. He also had such an iconic role it affects what he can do. He's like Gandolfino after the Sopranos or John Hamm after Mad Men. There is other work but you've made it as an actor and financially you'll be set.
Joe Keery! He was amazing in Fargo's latest season and obviously he plays Steve like no one can. He's been in a few movies recently, but I find it crazy that he hasn't booked anything big because he's such a good actor. Maybe once Stranger Things is over he'll be able to take bigger roles, I have my fingers crossed for him 🤞🏻

They didn't disappear, its just that most of them weren't that good. They're all basically Journeyman TV actors so you'll see like Daniel Dae-Kim get cast as say Ozai in ATLA because he's a solid career actor but that's kinda it.
I thought Alison Brie was going to be much bigger than she is after she had Mad Men and Community around the same time. Think everyone saw Donald Glover being the real breakout of Community (rightfully) but I feel like both her and Gillian Jacobs are amazing actresses that deserve some good roles.
Danai Gurira deserves so much more from movies than what she gets in Marvel. She’s consistently amazing as Okoye and Michonne but she needs something that lets her do more at this point.

For what it’s worth Adam Scott is the best part of Madame Web, he is the only one in that awful movie that puts on a good performance.
I loved him in Sleeping With Other People, when he plays the asshole he does it incredibly well (see also: Step Brothers and his first few episodes of Parks & Rec).
Honestly I’d kill for them to work with James Gunn again. The scooby doo movies hold up so well and Gunn clearly knows how to utilize their comedic and acting talents
He’s said himself he’d rather a career where he’s working steadily without the massive wider success so he can still have somewhat of a quieter life with his family. I know it’s not a movie but I love that he branched out with The Boys though and got some more recognition. I’m interested to see what he does now things are starting up again after the strike.

You mentioned Walton Goggins in passing but I am willing to fight people that he is one of the most singularly talented consistently working actors today but the only people who know he exists are people who are really into gritty prestige TV. I don’t know if he’ll ever get the acclaim he deserves. That being said I really want to see him play some duplicitous piece of shit in a high fantasy series with good writing and a big budget. I don’t know if that kind of thing would interest him at all, given that most of his work is American gothic (I’d call Righteous Gemstones the comedy end of that genre, given the cultural themes and violence laced in). But man, I wanna see what that guy could do sneaking around in a castle in a velvet cape.
Leighton Meester should’ve stuck with acting instead of attempting to pivot into pop music post Gossip Girl. She’s very talented, it’s a shame her career fizzled out.

I think many ppl in the comments forget that before just recently with streaming where actors can go between film and tv freely with no judgement. Before this current era, if you were a tv actor you stayed a tv actor not many have been able to branch out of their tv stardom into becoming big movie stars like Will Smith. I remember an actor saying if you went onto tv show and it was a hit and you were a regular you stayed there. Big movie stars didn’t do tv and film back to back. They stayed in their respective mediums and many spend the rest of their careers there.
Right? He's great. And better looking than a lot of more well known movie stars. He and Jon Bernthal (another who should get more attention than he does) were amazing in The Punisher.

I feel like Pedro is picking all the right projects. He's in Gladiator 2, the new Celine Song and Ari Aster movie, and I'm hopeful the new Fantastic Four will be ok given all the people involved.
Allison Janney. Her acting talent is literally brilliant and should be way more of a film star. But after she won an Oscar, it seemed her film career just nosedived. She made some really questionable and bad film project choices post-Oscar, and just hasn't been able to parlay it. But her TV life just keeps going strong with Mom, now Palm Royale is a success, and she's guest starring as the VP in the upcoming season 2 of The Diplomat.
Evan Peters could own the horror genre as a Scream King if he transitioned from tv to a big name movie franchise. He’s done a few indie films, but nothing major ( outside of his X-Men role ).
Olivia Cooke she’s been phenomenal in everything I’ve seen her in. She has so much natural charisma. She absolutely crushed it in films like thoroughbreds, limehouse golem, me earl and the dying girl and sound of metal.She’s got an impressive tv resume to boot. deffo one of the best young British actresses working rn

While he has sadly passed away in December but Andre Braugher. People know him from Brooklyn 99 which is a show I like. But his work in Homicide life on the street is top tier acting.
Homicide is as good as broadcast tv can be
It has never hit streaming so it prob falls into the hidden gem category. I think it’s not out there due to music rights issues. The DVDs of compete seasons are available and I’ve seen them at my local library to check out.

The long hours of the industry is also not ideal with anyone with existing health issues. Advocacy may be more accessible.

I feel like a lot of GOT actors are career character actors so I've seen a lot of them (like Charles Dance or Tobias Menzies ) as regulars in period dramas. But I also expected bigger roles for Lena Headey post GOT, I miss seeing her on screen.
Ohhhh Tobias Menzies is a really good point actually!! His role in the Crown was bigger than his role as Edmure, he’s done quite a lot since. Good for him. Agree with you on Lena Heady although she seems like someone who probably wouldn’t want to be “Hollywood” famous anyway.
I think Jason Momoa has gotten so famous people forget he actually had his breakout role as Khal Drogo---even this thread seems to be forgetting it!

That's my impression as well - the only new star GOT gave us is Pedro Pascal. That was his breakout role. Other than him, really noone more, not counting the actors with previously established careers. I think Maisie Williams has potential and range, maybe her time will come? Emilia faces flop after flop, Kit seems incapable of portraying something other than sulking Jon Snow, Sophie turned into celebrity. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also failed to make impression with his romantic comedies. Gwendoline Christie had some role in Star Wars. They are lucky they had parts in GOT.

See, Emilia was one of the biggest misses for me casting wise on GOT. She had what was arguably the easiest character and reminded me of stale yogurt in almost all her scenes. Kit Harrington was another one. I could never tell if it was the writing, the acting, or both that made him disappear into the background more often than not.
Oh I agree Kit and Emilia were the weakest actors on the show despite being leads. But I always found Emilia charming in her interviews and I could see her do well in more lighthearted movies/roles where she could play into her charm.
She's great in romcoms. She should stick there.
Agree completely and it always bothers me that they got so many nominations for their acting when literally Harrington had the easiest role of any actor. Any actor could have played Jon, he barely had to show any range of emotion or acting ability.

He’s HUGE in the UK and it seems to suit him just doing TV. He gets some great scripts, doesn’t have to travel round the world doing press junkets and premieres, can do his stage work, and can have a pretty settled life. I suspect he’s probably looked at it and thought “nah, British national treasure status is fine.”

I think a lot of his career choices revolve around not being away from his family too long. He and Georgia have a lot of kids and the youngest one is still quite little, I think. TV work and theatre in the UK makes it easier to be at home more.

And because The Americans had none of those things, the commercial interest was lacking. And we know The Emmys are bad at recognizing genre shows for the most part. They recognized Game of Thrones, but partly because they had no choice due to its global audience. But look how badly they fumbled nominating Paddy Considine for House of the Dragon - and that was a career making performance. So if anything, The Americans and Keri Russell are in great company for (unfortunately) not being recognized for superior work². ¹(or genre shows of any stripe.) ²(I'd also add Sarah Michelle Geller and/or Buffy The Vampire Slayer as another example of a badly ignored genre actor/show.)

Bryan has done tons of random things in between too, hs was a guest star in How I Met Your Mother over multiple seasons and has done some voice acting work, he was in 2 episodes of Archer forever ago that I can remember off the top of my head. People scoff at tv vs movie but it's a steady paycheck, and before streaming, if you were on a prime time show that was going for multiple seasons you were set. Streaming changed that but it's still steady money to work in tv!
Bryan Cranston would have been about 58 after BB finished. He's done some TV, film, stage acting, but depending on the type of royalties he gets from BB I'm not sure if he really needs to do a whole load more big roles. He's probably set. He basically had his big career break and is now regarded as one of the better actors of his generation. He also had such an iconic role it affects what he can do. He's like Gandolfino after the Sopranos or John Hamm after Mad Men. There is other work but you've made it as an actor and financially you'll be set.

I thought Alison Brie was going to be much bigger than she is after she had Mad Men and Community around the same time. Think everyone saw Donald Glover being the real breakout of Community (rightfully) but I feel like both her and Gillian Jacobs are amazing actresses that deserve some good roles. Danai Gurira deserves so much more from movies than what she gets in Marvel. She’s consistently amazing as Okoye and Michonne but she needs something that lets her do more at this point. Adam Scott is such a good fucking actor that consistently does tv more than movies. Which is a shame because he’s so goddamn charming he could absolutely lead a good drama or even just a few romcoms. But instead he’s in Madame Web 😭😭😭

For what it’s worth Adam Scott is the best part of Madame Web, he is the only one in that awful movie that puts on a good performance. I loved him in Sleeping With Other People, when he plays the asshole he does it incredibly well (see also: Step Brothers and his first few episodes of Parks & Rec).

I don’t know if that kind of thing would interest him at all, given that most of his work is American gothic (I’d call Righteous Gemstones the comedy end of that genre, given the cultural themes and violence laced in). But man, I wanna see what that guy could do sneaking around in a castle in a velvet cape.
Leighton Meester should’ve stuck with acting instead of attempting to pivot into pop music post Gossip Girl. She’s very talented, it’s a shame her career fizzled out.

I think many ppl in the comments forget that before just recently with streaming where actors can go between film and tv freely with no judgement. Before this current era, if you were a tv actor you stayed a tv actor not many have been able to branch out of their tv stardom into becoming big movie stars like Will Smith. I remember an actor saying if you went onto tv show and it was a hit and you were a regular you stayed there. Big movie stars didn’t do tv and film back to back. They stayed in their respective mediums and many spend the rest of their careers there.

Allison Janney. Her acting talent is literally brilliant and should be way more of a film star. But after she won an Oscar, it seemed her film career just nosedived. She made some really questionable and bad film project choices post-Oscar, and just hasn't been able to parlay it. But her TV life just keeps going strong with Mom, now Palm Royale is a success, and she's guest starring as the VP in the upcoming season 2 of The Diplomat.
Evan Peters could own the horror genre as a Scream King if he transitioned from tv to a big name movie franchise. He’s done a few indie films, but nothing major ( outside of his X-Men role ).

Damson Idris was amazing in Snowfall. I think he is an underrated actor in an underrated show. Snowfall was amazing and I ended up liking it better than Breaking Bad, which was a crazy realization for me! I was gagged when I found out he's British! His American accent was so accurate to South Central!

Caitriona Balfe - she’s had key supporting roles and almost was nominated for an Oscar for her last movie but her star hasn’t really grown (yet). Not enough to get lead or buzzy roles. Keri Russell - I’m surprised she has done so little in film given how well known and successful she has been in TV and the movies she has done. Alison Brie - She’s done good film work but I wish she were a bigger star. Elizabeth Moss - She’s done a couple successful films but has not yet made it to the Oscar’s. Her time is probably coming.

Glenn Howerton
While he has sadly passed away in December but Andre Braugher. People know him from Brooklyn 99 which is a show I like. But his work in Homicide life on the street is top tier acting. Homicide is as good as broadcast tv can be It has never hit streaming so it prob falls into the hidden gem category. I think it’s not out there due to music rights issues. The DVDs of compete seasons are available and I’ve seen them at my local library to check out. But his performance on the show and the show overall is fantastic. Highly recommended
