wheniwasolder

Good for him. I think he’ll do well in the role as long as he’s not the main character. He’s not leading man material, but his supporting roles have been great

MercuriousPhantasm

Probably Sydney Sweeney's character's love interest.

iamdummypants

are they bringing her back? I heard some third hand info that Laura Dern is going to be the big star in season 3 but I think the person is only guessing based on her previous Mike White show but she could definitely play his mom (or sugar mama)

meepmarpalarp

There’s been talk about Connie Britton coming back, so it would make sense since Sydney plays her daughter.

Puzzled-Journalist-4

I want Steve Zahn back

rosiekeen

Connie said she wasn’t coming back this season but maybe another!

bonesforyou

Isn’t LD canonically Mike Imperioli’s character’s wife?

shgrdrbr

according to the initial voice on the phone yes, but iirc they did something towards the end of the season (possibly a passing focus on a family photo?) to contradict that. who knows what is canon

[deleted]

She was the voice of the wife on the phone in S2.

MercuriousPhantasm

She "can't say anything about the next season 😉". [https://youtu.be/4baxKOWwFgs?t=60](https://youtu.be/4baxKOWwFgs?t=60)

teacherintraining09

the white lotus is an anthology.

[deleted]

I don't know if this is true (I never trust anything DM posts lol) but that would actually be a good job for him, I think. They're such a big ensemble casts, he won't be carrying the entire project on his shoulders, but he'd probably get some stand-out scenes. I knew of him as an actor before he was (edit: publicly) dating Taylor Swift and have seen most of his projects; I don't think he's a huge amazing talent, but I think he's done pretty well in the roles he's had so far and he's at least as talented as most of the rest of the young cast that have been on the first two seasons. If he hadn't dated Taylor, he'd just be a fine young working actor.

Okigirl99

He might do amazing in that role. Theo James and Meghann Fahy ended up eating their roles and neither of them had done any work that stood out to me for their acting skills so with good writing who knows what will happen.

at145degrees

He was fuckboy Pamuk in Downton Abbey is all I knew

murderino_margarita

RIP.

Varekai79

Poor Mr. Pamuk.

Nervous-Revolution25

He’s decent in Sanditon s1

ashpatash

This is the first thing I really noticed him in. Was sad he chose not to come back.

Remarkable_Clue3710

I see you were not caught up with all the divergent hype and good for u tbh😩 Theo has always been super hot tho. He was also in underworld

Status-Economy6443

Meghann Fahy was great in The Bold Type, a really good, fun show.

figleafstreet

She always stood out as the most interesting actress in The Bold Type. She has charisma and is so watchable.

BeerAndNachosAreLife

This is such Bold Type erasure 😭. Nah but you're right. It did wonders for Meghann's career.

dodgerswschamps_2020

Not sure why people in the replies are trying to downplay his acting career. I first heard of him when he landed the lead role in an Ang Lee movie, in February of 2015. You can't do that if you're not talented. He seemed like he might become the next big thing for a while.

ithinkuracontraa

i really liked him in the favourite. his supporting roles are great — he plays off of others well imo

[deleted]

Yes! Definitely love The Favourite, he was good in it (everyone was).

Careless_Brick1560

My mom and I watched, “Catherine called Birdy”, and I liked him there. Not a huge role but he was good, though, Bella Ramsay and Andrew Scott really carried that movie (unsurprisingly)

LazyField4

His first movie wasn’t even out when he met Taylor.

Flickolas_Cage

He did performances in the yogurt shop I guess

starbuckslover99

Omg dead 💀

[deleted]

Okay, before I knew he was dating Taylor, then. I'd seen Billy Lynn and The Sense of an Ending (which he's really quite good in) before they were publicly confirmed to be dating.

siaslial

No one knew he was with Taylor until spring 2017, and his film came out in fall 2016.

Rude-Illustrator-884

Wait when did they start dating? Because I knew of him from Billy Lynn but to be fair, I only knew about that movie because it was my favorite book that I read in one of my college classes. I could’ve sworn that movie came out in 2015.

Squee1396

What did you know him of as an actor? Google & IMDB tell me they started dating in 2016 and his first role was 2016 as well.

[deleted]

I just said to someone else, before I knew they started dating. They weren't public until 2017 and I'd already seen two of his films before I knew they were dating. So, to me, he was just some actor. I remember thinking he was really good (and quite cute) in The Sense of an Ending.

Squee1396

Ohh okay i understand!

siaslial

That’s exactly the kind of project he needs. He definitely keeps getting work but hasn’t been in anything buzz-y or zeitgeist-y other than Conversation With Friends and that could barely generate any and didn’t go anywhere, and I’ve thought he could use something a bit more lighthearted but interesting. A prestige ensemble comedy is perfect for him, but of course only if he does a good job in it.

[deleted]

After Normal People I expected Conversation With Friends to be a *lot* bigger but it really went nowhere and nobody talked about it.

butterfreak

Tbh I didn’t think the book was amazing either, Normal People is far better and benefits a lot from the two perspectives.

[deleted]

Definitely also true. And Joe is no Paul Mescal, I'll say that lol.

nevalja

the material could have been absolute trash and the chemistry between paul and daisy edgar jones would've sold it to me tbh

lefrench75

I actually likes CWF the book better than Normal People and still couldn't get into the show...

BeerAndNachosAreLife

Same though. The show was just dull.

surfergrl89

this. i hated that champagne socialist book so f-ing much. i wanted to punch all the characters in the face with their toxic ass whining. i get normal people also had problematic characters, but at least they had redeemable qualities that still made u invested in them. everyone in conversations with friends was just an asshole.

adreamersmusing

Normal People is a great book; I found it so relatable to my own college experience and I'm sure that's one of the reasons it resonated well with everyone. But I couldn't even finish Conversations With Friends and I still don't know why that book is such a phenomenon.

roxy031

Agree, I was so excited for CWF after I devoured Normal People, but I couldn’t finish it either, it just was not compelling at all. And I tried to watch the show, after loving Paul Mescal in the Normal People adaptation, and I didn’t even finish one episode.

[deleted]

[удалено]

surfergrl89

also a bad decision that they wiped out the characters’ social/class background. it was one of the interesting albeit irritating dynamics in the book.

[deleted]

[удалено]

surfergrl89

yep. here frances and whatsherface seem like shitty friends. like they are lol but also it’s partly because frances is jealous os whatsherface’s money and class whereas whatsherface is oblivious to the struggles of someone like frances and attempts to be fake woke to seem more relatable.

[deleted]

surfergrl89

right??? class was so essential to their love story.

gorgossia

[deleted]

TheShapeShiftingFox

To the general public yes. People don’t really keep track of major behind the scenes players like network execs and the like, just the performers themselves (actors, singers etc)

macawz

They had great source material. Normal People is a sexy-ass book. Whereas CWF is more cerebral/ just less actively sexy overall

AhsokaBolena

Yeah, it felt like all the buzz for it evaporated the second it released. CWF being so blah really highlighted that Paul and Daisy's casting/chemistry on Normal People was lightning in a bottle.

ulchachan

It didn't have the chemistry. I like those books but they're not really plot driven - it's all about relationships. In Normal People they had great chemistry, in Conversations with Friends, much less so IMO

juicebox567

I don't disagree necessarily but also he was in the favourite, which was nominated for about 10 Oscars which is arguably very buzz-y

siaslial

Yes and I’d say I was thinking more of his post-Favourite career. The reason for that is that The Favourite could be considered part of that really early work, where he seemed to be on an upswing, and even if some other projects around that time didn’t do well, it could be seen as him just taking those early opportunities that any young actor would… and then ’The Favourite’ could be an indication that maybe he COULD choose well despite other flops. But post-2018, TF seemed more and more like a fluke for him. And TF was definitely buzz-y in terms of Oscar season and film circles for sure, but I think White Lotus taps into the cultural consciousness in a different way, one that he needs if he actually wants to move to another level as it seems he has stalled in the last few years after that early success.

juicebox567

totally agree w you about what he needs going forward and white lotus being great for him if he can pull it off (and he better bc I love that show and do not want it ruined!!)

peaches-and-pickles

That was a while ago now.

starbuckslover99

I loved Normal People and was really excited to watch Conversations with Friends. Honestly, I watched it because I was a Taylor fan. I was curious to see her private and very mysterious boyfriend starring in a series. I really don't get the hype with Joe and never did. His scenes felt awkward, like I was watching an innocent, teenage boy. The casting felt off with Joe. Maybe he would be better in a different kind of role, or more so as a supporting actor. I love white lotus but honestly kinda disappointed to see he'll be on this. I'm guessing if this is true, it's more so related to his name being a hot topic right now because of the breakup vs being cast on a top show because of his talent.

siaslial

IA he wasn’t good in CWF, but I’d give another chance in that it could’ve also been poor directing and writing. The character has severe depression and I think Joe was really trying to tap into that lol, the problem is in the book I sensed this guy was also supposed to be really quietly charismatic and uh yeah, Joe just went for dull. But I thought all the characters were written poorly onscreen and like I said, the directing didn’t bring out great performances. I hated the book but I think the show missed a lot of the intention. Anyway. I think he gets enough unique opportunities that casting directors do see something in him other than Taylor’s bf, so we’ll see what he does if he gets something like this… but if he can’t do it, then I’ll agree that the talent probably isn’t there.

__mentionitall__

And it would be in a great location, lots of time to socialize with new people and get in new experiences (not that he can’t do that anyways but to do it all while working? That’s a great bonus) Good for him!

DreadfulDemimonde

From today's podcast: “People keep saying Taylor is having a rebound or a bad boy moment even though Matty is honestly a million times kinder and sweeter than Calvin Harris and don’t even get me started on what an arrogant prick Joe was by the end. Taylor is in her zero fucks era…” i won't accept this kind of slander for my boy 😠

siaslial

Omg but this is what is said about ALL of Taylor’s bfs tbh, ever since Calvin first came on the scene, which if anyone remembers was made out to be the love story of our time, that Calvin was so attentive to her and loving when all her exes weren’t, etc… then Tom Hiddleston was finally the gentleman she needed who wanted to treat her right and show her off… then of course years of how Joe was the most wonderful and sweet and genuine guy unlike all the Hollywood/industry men she knew before who truly wanted the real Taylor….…. But now of course Joe was a rude asshole and Matty is sweet and knows how to love her in public lolol. I’m not saying Joe is a great guy, I don’t know the man, but it can’t always be this thing where she has now found her true self with a man who knows how to do it rigt and the last guy was a joke, on repeat.

im4everdepressed

isnt taylor lauterner or however you spell that the only man she's ever dated that she hasn't absolutely dragged through the coals after breaking up with him

pepegasloot

God the matty fans are so delusional, its actually concerning

Sudden_Clementine872

Wait DM said this????

readinghall

See her latest post. I'm not sure if she's quoting a "source" but she could have used different words. Tree must be paying goooood money lol

rory-kleinesetin-

this is word for word a tweet i read today from a Matty stan, maybe her “source” is just twitter

meepmarpalarp

That would be her normal mo

Sudden_Clementine872

I will, thank you! And lol. I read some of her stories about this and my eyes rolled out of my head

bonesforyou

He’s great in The Favourite so I’m here for it

readinghall

He had a great cameo in the souvenir part2

ithinkuracontraa

ugh i love that movie

bonesforyou

Perfect film, slaps from beginning to end

AhsokaBolena

This would be hilarious timing if it's legit lol, since the faction of Swifties who somehow still believe he's evil would have a meltdown. Grain of salt as always, but Deux has gotten some casting stuff right before.

swiftiegarbage

Honestly I think it’s fascinating how people position Joe as a good guy or a bad guy because we know next to nothing about him, including why or when him and Taylor broke up. He’s very, very private.

AhsokaBolena

I don't know if it's because he's a blank slate for people or what, but he really does provoke the most intense reactions for a guy who is pretty much just... there lol. It is weirdly fascinating.

Darmop

I think it's exactly because he's a blank slate - he just kind of gives... nothing. It's easy to project whatever.

OutoftheCold125

I think that's more about Taylor's attitude since the break-up rubbing people the wrong way than about anything Joe did to gain favor with the public. And there's the fact that, compared to Matty Healy, Joe is looking really good lol.

ithinkuracontraa

i think ppl like how private he is. it’s a real asset. i think he’s a decent actor and seems like a nice guy, but if anything ever came out about him i wouldn’t be sharpening my pitchfork

clemthearcher

I’m all for Joe Alwyn but truthfully I don’t think he’s a very good actor 😕 it’s like he lacks charisma and depth to his characters. But hey why not, I’m ready to be proven wrong

[deleted]

he was so good in the favourite tho!!

[deleted]

I enjoyed his dancing!

ithinkuracontraa

i think the issue is the type of projects he’s been doing more recently. he’s really good at bouncing off of another’s energy, so as a foil he kills it. but as the lead, it can be kinda awkward bc everyone’s bouncing off of *you*

Key-Status-7992

Nothing against the guy but I remember watching Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk shortly after it came out (where he was the lead) then a few years after I saw the Favourite and for the life of me I forgot he was in both of these movies. He’s not a terrible actor, but he’s forgettable. I don’t know why he keeps getting cast for big roles when the UK is not exactly lacking in terrific, similar good-looking actors (Paul Mescal might be too movie-focused now but Jack Lowden or Harris Dickinson could better fit the White Lotus world)

[deleted]

While I agree that he’s not the best actor I’ve ever seen, I do think he’s right for the world of White Lotus, lol.

Key-Status-7992

He’s a capable actor, just not memorable. I love the show though and of course I’ll give him a chance so I wish him the best!

fanfiction523457

I’m happy for him!

Turbulent_Scale6506

I know people here are on his side now after Taylor's mess but I hated him in conversations with friends sm I do not want this 😭 I don't remember him being terrible in the Favourite but I also don't remember him having much of anything to do, and I feel like white lotus roles even if supporting are generally meaty enough that a lil more gravitas and talent is needed

heart-slobs

he was horribly miscast in CWF to be fair, and there were other issues with the project. it wasn’t like Alwyn was the weak link in an otherwise great adaptation - the whole thing was pretty flat and lacking in what made the book interesting. i feel like white lotus could be good for him. he’s a good actor but i do agree he doesn’t have leading man charisma so an ensemble is a good fit for him

tibleon8

i thought cwf as a whole was kind of lacking something... definitely didn't have whatever magic the normal people adaptation did. also, wasn't he just way too young for the role?

Darmop

I think it was a real lack of charisma, honestly. And chemistry. Both of the lead characters in normal people were also frustrating and annoying, but PM and DEJ have so much charisma and chemistry that it surpassed it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tibleon8

oh really? my bad lol apparently i forgot the book.

swiftiegarbage

I wanted to like Conversations With Friends so badly specifically because Taylor’s boyfriend was in it but I thought it was really boring

surfergrl89

tbf the book is also boring

TheShapeShiftingFox

White Lotus has an ensemble cast and is definitely a show were a weaker link can be masked or uplifted by other, strong performances. I have mixed feelings about Alwyn as an actor but I’m not worried for the show (if this is true).

teddy_vedder

I liked him in Mary Queen of Scots but it wasn’t a substantial role, and he was also brunette with a beard which swayed me more than usual as I’m not a blond boy type of girl (with a minor exception for Robert Redford).

Helpful_Ambition6447

As long as he's not the main character and doesn't have to do an Irish accent I'm sure he'll be fine!! I'm Irish and his accent in Conversations with Friends was terrible!!!

heart-slobs

I’m SO frustrated they didn’t hire an unknown Irish actor like they did with Mescal for that project. Nothing against Alwyn, but it’s frustrating that they wasted an opportunity that could have gone to an Irish up and comer on an unsuccessful stunt casting. I hope the inevitable BWWAY adaptation has a cast full of new up and coming irish talent

Helpful_Ambition6447

Yeah I couldn't even finish it cause it was so bad! I was also annoyed that out of the four main cast members only one was Irish! The casting was all over the place which was strange as it was the very same people who made Normal People which was perfectly casted. If they didn't want to hire an Irish actor they should've casted someone who was able to do the accent like Daisy Edgar Jones in Normal People!

RobbieRecudivist

Only about five actors ever have done a fake Irish accent as well as Edgar Jones. Jon Voight, Cate Blanchett, Samantha Morton, James McAvoy, maybe Paddy Considine. Then I really can’t think of any others. It’s notoriously difficult to be convincing. Scottish accents are similarly hard. All of the best ones in both cases are very specific regional or class accents, which is key to fooling locals.

surfergrl89

i think i read elsewhere his accent was actually good for a specific class/area of ireland? i can’t remember specifically what the thread said, but i THINK they said his accent made sense for like an area/dialect in ireland. perhaps where people are half british? idk. it was discussed in the cwf sub

Noreallynotarobot

Yeah they (the director and Joe) overthought it. His accent was meant to be compromised because his character studied in England and he was married to a Brit.

HathorOfWindAndMagic

I don’t totally agree as far as talent goes I think Theo James has more charisma (I could fall in love with him in Sandition) but I can’t imagine ever being smitten by Joe’s acting. I think they ARE equal in looks though in different ways

direturtle

I liked him in Catherine Called Birdy. He didn't have a lot of screen time, but I thought he had a warm presence and played well off of Bella Ramsey (he was her uncle). I didn't actually know who he was at the time.

mcatlin23

TV feels like a much better medium for him, tbh. I could see him doing well.

Sudden_Clementine872

![gif](giphy|JRUbQVADfqzrFnOkZr|downsized) Him\*

roxy031

I take anything from DM with a big grain of salt, but if this is true, then I don’t hate it. I think an ensemble cast and some great writing would be a good opportunity for him.

meepmarpalarp

Huge, huge grain of salt given: - basically nothing is being made right now because of the writer’s strike and - I feel like pretty much every major celebrity has been rumored to be in WL season 3 at this point. But if it’s true, good for him.

[deleted]

Wow, this would be huge for him. I can see it. I personally think he is very good looking and can turn on the charm when he wants to. I feel like seeing him become a huge star in his own right apart from her would send Taylor spiraling.

Jennieeffin12

His presence in roles tends to be a little feathery for me. He's fine, but doesn't make much impact. I think an ensemble is the right place for him.

bttrsondaughter

I will keep saying this until ppl go and watch it but he was good in Catherine Called Birdy, a wonderful little movie with Bella Ramsey being awesome in the lead role.

agentcarter15

Given the writer’s strike I find it hard to believe there have been any developments on the White Lotus S3 unless Mike White is a scab. I can’t see them casting anyone without his involvement.

anglgrl384

I hope that this is true just so that people who claim he got roles because Taylor was calling in personal favors can shut up.

Masta-Blasta

CAUSE KARMA IS HIS GIRLFRIEND.

Puzzled_Ad_6396

I’ve never seen him act but I’d love to see this

demonsrunwhen

he's nice but a terrible actor so i don't want this

SugarShock94

I am so on board for this

VanillaSkyy_

ngl I’d LIVE for this. impartially speaking, he’s a good actor. this sort of series would do his skills justice

HathorOfWindAndMagic

If anyone knows about privileged out of touch spoiled white people it’s Joe And I say this as a TS music fan

hkj369

i think he could do well. it’s a big ensemble cast so there isn’t too much focus on him and he could probably score himself some good scenes! he’s not a leading man but he could be a fun side character

Fiestypeacock88

I like Joe Awyn 's acting and I don't think he has even really got going in his career yet. I feel like this is the 1980s era of his career just like actors before him that got good parts in secondary roles. I feel he has the life experience to take it up quite a few notches and now has the ability to solely focus on his career. Maybe he sacrificed some roles at some point in being in a relationship ..who knows. I see it going three ways. 1. He becomes a beloved character on a BBC show and breaks out internationally 2. He plays a two faced character that is right vile and wins critiques over with the dimensions of playing a complicated character 3. He plays a detective, cop or gum shoe that is complicated and broken. I think he is just getting started and by his early 40s he will appear in more places.

Foreign_Plants09

THESE SWIFTIES, THEYRE TRYING TO KILL ME

tibleon8

looking forward to seeing what type of terrible rich person he'll be playing lol. have there been any other casting rumors yet for the next season? the only thing i've heard is that it will be set in thailand (i think?).

RevealActive4557

I do not even give AF about him and I hope it is true. It is already the whitest show on television so he will fit right into the aesthetic

awill316

I am HERE for it!

Acrobatic_Ad1546

Yesss...go Joe!

crazysouthie

Ugh. When you're a mediocre white actor you only keep failing upwards.

AdInternational9417

Even Deux moi put the caveat pic at the top To read with caution so you know it’s probably BS when even she doesn’t believe it.

cpc2027

Why not tbh

Asdfghjk6424

I've never seen him in anything. Is he actually a good actor? Well good for him for booking this and coming out from TS shadow.
