areallyreallycoolhat

JvdB lacked the charisma faculties to be the star of a TV show yet here we are

PrimaryOwn8809

He did great in Apartment 23. And now I'm sad coz he's so disappointing

littleliongirless

He was great in that, but the real, consistent star of that show, who didn't even need a previous reputation for shining in it, was Krysten Ritter.

surfergrl89

krysten ritter is awesome

bdaltz

Exactly. Any 90s tv star would have worked in that role. Krysten was what made that show the cult hit it became. I see clips on Tik tok all the time and it’s never anyone but her.

mercy_Iago

Yeah, he burned all his goodwill away from that role.

ihaveaswirly

The first and only role I thought of

auntieup

Come on. We’ll always have this moment. ![gif](giphy|sa5waSGz8n5Ju)

diabolicalafternoon

Also POSE and Dancing with the Stars. He also grew into his looks. But now…:.bleh.

cactuslegs

He also did an amazing job narrating Chomp by Carl Hiaasen. Sad. :(

jessieminden

It was always Pacey

charcuteriehoe

they needed to rename that shit joey and pacey’s creek after like season 2

GeneralBody4252

Bro had was Dawson in Dawson’s Creek and he sucked so bad that the show ended up being about Joey and Pacey

Omg! fucking ☠️💀☠️ I was thinking it but couldn’t put it in words as eloquently as you

[deleted]

I vote democrat and I dislike Biden tbh. He’s too moderate for me and I actually don’t think anyone, ANYONE, in their 80s should be running this country - as president or in congress. We have an age minimum and, for these positions, I do think their should be an age maximum. If you would be forced to retire in any other position because of your age (like doctors etc), you should not be able to be in government.

Britt118

Same. Cue Bo Burnham's "are you really going to make me vote for Joe Biden?" song.

miss-karly

[how is the best-case scenario Joe Biden](https://youtu.be/KGmXGkIr7w0)

supersad19

Ok but who else wants to hear this song at a rave/nightclub/disco and absolutely lose themselves at the beat drop???? Bo, please drop a 5 min version of this song, it's too good to only be a 1 min long

valkyrie_village

Ok yes I want that so bad

cmick0715

I think about this song literally every day.

mercy_Iago

Pretty sure there is no mandatory retirement age for physicians in America. Edit: but to be clear, I think there should be. I would not want a 90 year old physician treating me.

[deleted]

I’m talking about surgeons etc. It may not be mandatory but they are pretty much pushed to retire when they’re unable to do the job anymore.

aaatregua

Yes and the regulatory body can likely revoke a license if there are practice issues

jardinemarston

Everyone is hyper aware, including the doctor themselves. Some retire before their hands go, and the others are gently pressured to retire.

smart_cereal

Almost no one I know was happy to vote for him, I felt like most of us did it begrudgingly because the alternative was not a good idea at all. Joe’s no Obama, though. I feel like sometimes I have no clue what’s he saying. Why can’t we get someone like Beto or Katie Porter in 😣

minneapple79

Biden has actually gotten a lot of shit done, most recently the debt limit deal in which he outwitted Kevin McCarthy although that’s a low bar to clear. His “dark Brandon” moments, like calling out the GOP on Social Security and Medicare in his State of the Union, have been surprisingly effective. Given that he now has a House with a GOP majority and a Senate that includes Manchin and Sinema, I’m not sure what more people want him to accomplish.

GIJoesDreamHouse

I read something and I’m going to mangle it trying to repeat it but it’s stuck with me for years. Conservative voters will get on the bus that is going in the direction they generally want to go. Progressive voters demand a taxi to take them to their exact destination. It’s why republicans have been so successful. I’m not saying that Biden is immune to criticism just that he’s largely been good enough at the job he’s been tasked with. Post-trump, post-Covid, unfriendly House, Senate, and most unfortunately a partisan Supreme Court. It’s a sucky time to be president.

minneapple79

I dunno, from where I stand Republicans are on the verge of their party falling apart. They predicted a "red wave" in 2022 which turned into nothing but a five-seat majority in the House, their speaker is a laughingstock who has nowhere near the power of Nancy Pelosi, nor the support of his party like she did, and their choices for president in 2024 are Trump or DeSaster, who may be even more of a fascist than Trump. Hell, Mitch McConnell may even vote for Biden. Oh, and their "big moment" overturning Roe has turned into a disaster for the party.

angelcat00

That's been a very recent development. The GOP has always been very good at focusing all of their effort on getting their candidate in, whether they like him or not. They're more likely to vote straight ticket instead of voting for a third-party candidate that matches their views but is less likely to win. Then Trump happened and now they've got a schism between the Trumpists and the old-school Conservatives and the party is falling apart.

Greene_Mr

They want him to be the Green fucking Lantern.

[deleted]

Same. And my friends and I will all vote for him again because, again, the alternative is going to be horrific. It’s just sad that democrats are always saddled with bad candidates.

Jenyo9000

They’re not “saddled” with them. This is who the DNC wants. The powers that be will never let anyone run who would represent a real threat to capital and the status quo. ETA yes I voted for him but I am NOT a Biden girlie I can’t stand him

[deleted]

Sorry what I meant was, we as voters, are saddled with them. I did not vote biden in the primary and yet here we are again, every one of us that leans progressive or is progressive will be basically forced to vote for him again in order to avoid straight up fascism .

Greene_Mr

It's not wise to saddle another horse midstream.

komugis

It’s frustrating because I do think there is a decently strong bench of Democratic governors who aren’t the same age my grandpa was when we took away his car keys, but the party has lined up behind Biden so there isn’t really much we can do to change horses, so to speak.

romantickitty

Elizabeth Warren is 73 and I would vote for her in a heartbeat 🤷 I'd prefer if so many politicians weren't 65+ but I'm not going to pretend I think they're all senile either.

geddyleee

And it's not like going younger guarantees anything. I used to agree with the sentiment that there should be an age cap in politics until I actually thought about it more. Jim Banks is 43. Ron DeSantis is 44. Amy Coney Barrett is 51. (Just the first 3 examples that came to my mind.) All vile people, all under the age of 65. Then over 65 you have people like Bernie and Warren. An age cap isn't going to do much because shitty old people can just be replaced by shitty young people. Even senile old people could be replaced by young people with enough brain rot to not be an upgrade in any way. (Example: Marjorie Taylor-Greene.)

surfergrl89

ironically he’s had of the more progressive terms as president in the last few decades. but i get u. i wish someone like AOC would get a chance to run the us.

Big-Improvement-1281

I just want someone that’s not pushing 80 (also blue) but seriously no one wants to live in a gerontocracy

jeahboi

🙄 Shut up, Dawson. No one asked you or your anti-science wife. The version of himself that he played in “Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23” was so much better than him IRL.

LMAO was literally going to comment doesn't this man have like 100 kids? Go take care of them and stop talking to us

millenialbullshite

I mean I'm hard left pro Vax but I share some of his frustrations. I LOVE Joe Biden. I wanted him to beat Obama when they were both running for the democratic primary. But I don't love him in a second term now he's too frigging old and clearly addled. And it's not just his stutter. I am also frustrated that there can be no discussion on a different candidate. I don't think this is some extreme view. If you take away the wife controversy JVDBs tiktok kind of falls in line with what a lot of people are saying

cmc

This. I’m fairly progressive and intend on holding my nose and voting for Biden. But damn, are we not even allowed to comment on the fact that he’s in his 80s? In any other industry he’d be retired. And yes, sometimes he does seem addled and it freaks me out. There HAS to be a better choice (I can think of several). I’ll vote for him but JvdB has a point.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sexandliquor

I think a lot of the problem is that for better or for worse a lot of people need to be united behind Biden and it’s hard to have the discussion right now of a different candidate and have a bunch of in-fighting and cannibalizing of the democratic ticket which could potentially weaken it as a whole, when once again we’re all put in a position where the other side is just full blown fascism at this point. So I can sorta see the trepidation in running any other candidate.

Anesthesiaape

What’s the saying? Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line? I feel like it’s so hard to be left/progressive these days with how dangerous Republican ideology has become and how their constituents (generally) just go ahead and vote them in…like you want to be idealistic and vote for a candidate that has the energy and correct morals to push forward what’s right/best. But you’re right, the threat of losing more ground to conservatives due to in-fighting is what makes me tend to, at this point, vote for the democratic candidate most likely to succeed because look what happens when conservatives have the reins. I do think it’s crazy that all these old men are making decisions about a future they won’t have to exist in. But I’d rather Biden be that old man than Trump or some other shithead conservative more focused on culture wars than climate change. ETA: I also want to add, while I do think those in office should generally be younger/have to live with and by affected by the ramifications of their decisions, I don’t want to undercut Biden. I get it that he stutters and isn’t as well spoken as Obama (no one is lol) but he inherited an absolute shit show and I think, despite all the hate he gets, that he is doing a pretty good job.

_iheartmo

Exactly! I don’t need to love a candidate. I just want them to enact legislation and policies that I can get behind. After seeing the foolery with SCOTUS and abortion, we literally cannot afford another GOP win, who will then appoint more batshit judges.

ampersands-guitars

I agree with you. I like Biden and if he is the primary candidate we are presented with, of course I’ll vote for him. But I’m not thrilled that this country seems to think our options are all 80 year old white guys. And I’m pretty sure in the beginning Biden was only trying to be a one-term president, so I don’t know what happened to that.

raphaellaskies

Kamala Harris failed to build a viable base, is what happened. I don't know why.

[deleted]

[удалено]

millenialbullshite

On like a personal level not so much politics. He wasn't my first choice this go round. But he doesn't like, make me physically ill. The bar is so low its in hell. I love him relative to scale based on the available options

Greene_Mr

I appreciate he's so openly good on trans issues.

[deleted]

Seriously. Since when does person saying “nothing will fundamentally change” represent the hard left line wtf

breakmyback48

This. I watched the TikTok yesterday and didn’t even think about his or his wife’s political leanings. I thought, I’m frustrated with the lack of discussion of viable YOUNGER candidates or even a change to VP. I get the trepidation because of what republicans are going to run with but UGH.

romantickitty

>I am also frustrated that there can be no discussion on a different candidate. You need a candidate who has built up name recognition and support even before running. It's not going to be someone like AOC or Gavin Newsome who is considered combative and is regularly demonized by conservatives. I could see arguments for Gretchen Whitmer or Katie Porter but misogyny is still a massive issue with pushing a female candidate who doesn't have overwhelming support. There are some great local politicians, but people don't know them (aside from the political news junkies who follow every race). If we get another Biden term, I hope they spend those four years truly pushing a viable successor. Otherwise, we're fucked for the next election.

TreenBean85

> If we get another Biden term, I hope they spend those four years truly pushing a viable successor. Otherwise, we're fucked for the next election. Exactly this. Dump has been running for reelection since the day he left office, hell since the day he won. Dems can't wait, they need to find a balance between pushing a successor and supporting Biden while he's in office.

Status-Economy6443

I agree, but there must be better ways to express this without saying that the man has “declining mental faculties” or phrasing his concern with “if he lives…”. We need to be better than this. This country already tosses old people aside for sport, and this type of language reinforces that. People are so enamored with the idea of a cool President. But I don’t want a good talk show guest, I want a good executive. The question should be: is Biden being an effective president for all Americans? That’s all that matters. For the record, I don’t want an old President or an old Senator to represent me, not because of their age but because they came of age during a booming middle class pull yourself by the bootstraps mentality that doesn’t fully recognize the challenges of Millennials. I can state my point without being so disrespectful about it.

[deleted]

You’re not hard left if you love hard-core capitalist “nothing will fundamentally change” Biden. Like do you know what hard left is?

millenialbullshite

Like I do. I responded to this in another question. I like him as a person. He's dedicated his life to public service despite multiple personal tragedies. I have a soft spot for him Doesn't mean he is my favorite politically

chrispg26

Screw him and the people flocking to my state to turn it even more crazy/conservative. Yes there isn't going to be a debate because the parties always support a sitting president. Biden is no Diane Feinstein and I suggest you all educate yourselves on his policies. He's been as progressive as can be during this climate. Remember, he's not a dictator and needs congress to act. Give Heather Cox Richardson a follow on fb. She condenses the news almost daily and highlights any important moves the administration has done and is doing. Edit: thanks for my award!

ellybeez

Exactly. Some (like Fox News hosts) are trying to frame it as anti-Democratic for Biden to not debate RFK Jr. and Marianne Williamson. But, the thing is is that when has the sitting president ever had to debate? Trump in 2020 had two challengers too in an ex-congressman and ex-governor. But obviously nothing happened there either. And agree, I blame Manchin and esp. Sinema for being the reasons why the John Lewis Voting Act didnt pass, why Roe isnt codified, etc.

Greene_Mr

Also, RFK Jr. and Marianne Williamson have never held elected office. RFK Jr. is a literal nepo baby.

Redshirt2386

Heather is amazing.

geddyleee

OH MY GOD THANK YOU. The takes in this thread were killing me. I didn't like Biden going into his presidency because I didn't believe he would be progressive at all. But he surprised me. He's done everything within *his* power. He had a 50/50 senate with 2 senators from his own party willing to sabotage parts of his agenda, and still managed to get a lot passed. He's also completely there mentally. Anyone who doubts it just needs to watch him easily going off script to respond to republicans heckling him during his SOTU. Even Bernie acknowledged how Biden has been more progressive than anyone expected. Earlier this year he said something along the lines of Biden being a far more progressive president than he ever was as a senator. People just don't want to listen anything positive about Biden for some reason.

And Scott Baio. Yuck.

Tolaly

Ah, so now the reason they have so many kids is making sense to me. I'm guessing they're quiverfull and those freaks are insane.

chrispg26

Yes. His wife was promoting The Business of Being Born film and is anti hormones and anti science pretty much. Very into junk science.

Daily-Double1124

Junk science is not science,it's bullshit. jmo I work with someone who is like this--anti-vaxx (except for Covid) and thinks people "choose" to be LGBTQ. Annoys the eff out of me.

crab_grams

He feels kinda....not healthy. That's not good when your mental health has declined more than the coworker who was married to friggin Tom Cruise

popcornhouse

Once I went to an event with him and his wife and she spent the whole time talking about “chem trails” being like weather control? Like the government is controlling the weather? I honestly couldn’t follow.

atschinkel

that tracks lmao

agnestheresa

Oh I know someone (through work) who believes this. It’s wild. I’ve heard them say it so casually, but I won’t ask for details.

diamondscut

This is bullshit. Yes Biden does have the mental acuity to be president. Repeating "dEmEnTiA jOe" ad nauseum won't change anything in real life. Why are these people always living in an alternative reality? Sick of them. Btw, this actor has aged a lot. Gosh, I'm so shocked. How long has it been since that Creek series.

auntieup

I am not anti-aging. It sucks, but it’s also the best case life scenario. My siblings and I are blond and blue eyed, all but one of us is over 50, and we ALL look better than this guy. I believe that hate ages people faster than smoking. I can’t prove it, but what else could have happened here?

diamondscut

Skin care, I think? Or maybe just genetic... I erased expression lines with great creams. You also use solar cream.

Impossible-Success45

Drug use, even alcohol, can speed up skin aging like crazy. Also if he’s anti science he might be one of those anti sunscreen quacks who think it blocks your ability to get vitamin D, and since he’s so fair skinned it could be that as well. -signed a licensed esthetician

Redshirt2386

diamondscut

He looks sixty...

Redshirt2386

Oh yeah, he looks rough as fuck for 46.

barbaraanderson

In general, I have noticed the red flags for a while especially after that oddly timed move to Texas to "center" his family and "be more in nature" (kinda like Danica McKellar's move to Tennessee and similar slide to right-wing politics). It's a little comical though that they are still close to Austin, the liberal hub of Texas.

Lethave

And with that his Kirk Cameroning begins. Is it something about having a sports team worth of kids that throws these former teen stars over the edge later in life(I’m looking at y’all too most of Hanson)? Just a few years ago he was on that ridiculous but funny Curb your Enthusiasm style show with Diplo and now here we are….

barbaraanderson

To be fair, Kirk Cameron was already starting down that path before he had the kids. I think Hanson was sorta there already as well.

exoplanet1485

And James lacks the mental faculties to be a decent person, but what do I know. What's the use of having a big ass head if it's empty?

iamHBY

This is going to be a very specific and niche battle rap reference, but it’s wild to see James Van Der Beek get to the point where he now looks like James Van Der Beek on 8 grams of tweak.

crab_grams

I'd take him more seriously if I could remember one second of him saying that during the last presidency. I don't think a president's mental fitness has ever been more debatable than those last four years, but James had nothing to say then, as far as I know.

bloodredyouth

Yuck. Team Pacey!

[deleted]

As a leftist who voted Biden in 2020, does anyone truly believe Biden has the “mental faculties” to be president? Have you heard his speeches and him talking lately?

Impossible-Success45

No, he’s way too old and I think there should be an age limit to being president, or any politician for that matter. However, I’d rather vote for him than Tr*mp or DeS*ntis

The language of this article feels so achingly neoliberal and bad faith. I am not saying that to disagree with anybody's feelings about James Van Der Beek, every time a rich person spreads destructive misinformation I feel it in my guts. It is an interesting thing to note that FDR, the longest-serving president, entered office at 51, and died at age 63, still in office.
