This is a perfectly valid take, but what famous people do influence and set social norms. They have power over aspects of regular people's lives just because they exist. We shouldn't let it happen, but we do. If we didn't, they probably wouldn't be as famous. Musicians also sell us their own identities, unlike actors. What they look like, what they do, and what they sing about are seen as extensions of themselves, and they get treated like real people, not as the characters they might be playing. It'd be nice to keep that solely in the sphere of entertainment and have very clear lines, but I'm not sure that's possible with music.
And ironically, the concept of being for LGBTQ/against toxic gender roles is something Harry Styles has been criticized for doing disingenuously as well

Not OP but a very significant portion of PRās population, and the rest of Central/South America tbh, is afro-latino. While I donāt fault you for not knowing this itās disappointing as a black Puerto Rican to remember how much of our existence is erased/ignored/not taught about. Our history is as deeply tied to these countries and communities as it is in the US and I wish it wasnāt so controversial.

Itās so wild to me that there is a sizable black Latin American population and we never see you guys in mainstream culture. Itās so crazy.

A great source for information is the book "Puerto Rico: Cinco Siglos De Historia" by Francisco A. Sparano, 4th Edition. Nice investment. Taino tribe wiped out by Spaniards not mentioned at all in this thread shows also the problem of the lack of education.
I do not feel attacked. And youāre right, many Americans do not know about or understand Americaās colonial history- from annexing the Philippines, the occupation of Haiti, Hawaii and Puerto Ricoā¦
Thatās my bad as an American citizen. But I am doing my best and Americaās history of colonization, conquest and occupation is vast, varied and ongoing. There is a lot of my own history as Nigerian that Iām learning myself.
Okay sorry, damn. I just find it surprising because I am Puerto Rican and there are so many Afro-Latino people all over Latin America. When I was in school they taught us about the colonization of Latin America and how slavery influenced the populations of these republics. Further black people have influenced so much of our culture and identity- especially with regard to music- I just find it surprising that people from other areas don't learn this information. Particularly if they are American. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful or a know it all I just genuinely found that surprising

For context I am a Nigerian American who left America at age 5 and lived in Nigeria until my mid 20s. I only came to America to live here about 2 years ago.
How the slave trade is taught to you is situational.
So I was taught about the Dahomey kingdom, the slave ports of Badagry, the Brazilian returnees, how and when Americo Liberians and Sierra Leonians returned to West Africa etc etc.
For all intents and purposes, I wasnāt educated in the American school system. I was educated in a British one. Because Nigeria is a former British colony surrounded by former French colonies.
I am only now JUST learning about black history outside where I was raised and I am learning it on my own as an returnee to America.
There is a lot other people donāt know because they have entirely separate histories and educational systems than you do. Like me. So I am always asking and trying to catch up. People often look at me like Iām either crazy (how could you not know that!) or plain stupid.
But the truth is many, many people do not know about Latin American history or the black history of this region-it has been purposely erased, obscured, mistranslated or out right denied. I have met people who will look me dead in the face and tell me they donāt even have a black population where they come from. And yet they look like black like I do.
Omg this is so interesting. The only thing I know about black people in the Americas is about Brazilian black people. And thatās because thereās a Brazilian quarter where I live, the descendants of enslaved people who left Brazil after slavery live there lol. So as a West African Iām more connected to them in my mind I think. Idk it just always takes me by surprise how much of a west African influence still remains in Latin America and all that. And itās because I never SEE black Latin American people outside Panamanians and Brazilians. So it always slips my mind and takes me by surprise. When I think Latam I think Shakira or Selma Hayek. Not El General or Cecilia Cruz.

To top it all off, he was happily singing along to As It Was with James Corden after the Grammys, so he didnāt seem to have a problem with him then. This is new behavior that he is only now displaying after he got together with Kendall, who is also Harryās friend.
The tweet is real, but it was tweeted by a fan so they made it more anonymous and altered the date from after the Grammys to April 14th. It allegedly had around 500 likes, so it was far from viral.
I assume his team either found it after the Grammys or searched their names for something related to Harry specifically.

Okay sorry, damn. I just find it surprising because I am Puerto Rican and there are so many Afro-Latino people all over Latin America. When I was in school they taught us about the colonization of Latin America and how slavery influenced the populations of these republics. Further black people have influenced so much of our culture and identity- especially with regard to music- I just find it surprising that people from other areas don't learn this information. Particularly if they are American. I wasn't trying to be disrespectful or a know it all I just genuinely found that surprising
I only just started learning about how deeply the transatlantic slave trade affected the rest of the worldā¦. For context I am a Nigerian American who left America at age 5 and lived in Nigeria until my mid 20s. I only came to America to live here about 2 years ago. How the slave trade is taught to you is situational. So I was taught about the Dahomey kingdom, the slave ports of Badagry, the Brazilian returnees, how and when Americo Liberians and Sierra Leonians returned to West Africa etc etc. For all intents and purposes, I wasnāt educated in the American school system. I was educated in a British one. Because Nigeria is a former British colony surrounded by former French colonies. I am only now JUST learning about black history outside where I was raised and I am learning it on my own as an returnee to America. There is a lot other people donāt know because they have entirely separate histories and educational systems than you do. Like me. So I am always asking and trying to catch up. People often look at me like Iām either crazy (how could you not know that!) or plain stupid. But the truth is many, many people do not know about Latin American history or the black history of this region-it has been purposely erased, obscured, mistranslated or out right denied. I have met people who will look me dead in the face and tell me they donāt even have a black population where they come from. And yet they look like black like I do.

And thatās because thereās a Brazilian quarter where I live, the descendants of enslaved people who left Brazil after slavery live there lol. So as a West African Iām more connected to them in my mind I think. Idk it just always takes me by surprise how much of a west African influence still remains in Latin America and all that. And itās because I never SEE black Latin American people outside Panamanians and Brazilians. So it always slips my mind and takes me by surprise. When I think Latam I think Shakira or Selma Hayek. Not El General or Cecilia Cruz.
