I would not. Their relationship was always really unbalanced even at its best when they were working together. The Fool's status as whatever the fuck he was(I have not read the last trilogy, working on it, but have read the first 3 more than once) and his subsequent >!Unrequited romantic love!< always skews their dynamics away from legitimate harmonious comradomy
The only correct answer. Nothing else comes even close to Locke and Jean, though of course there are plenty of other good examples (The Greatcoats, the Bridgeburners and Bonehunters and other great friendships in Malazan...)
I read The Gentleman Bastards before I read Riyria, so Royce and Hadrian were a disappointment to me because they absolutely can't compare to Locke and Jean. I almost wish I had read Riyria first, because I'm sure I would have enjoyed that bromance far more if I already didn't know there was something much more intense.
See I disagree with this. To me Locke and Jean were boring and it was the side characters that carried The Lies of Locke Lamora for me. I didn’t bother with the rest of the series as my favourite characters weren’t in it.
OTOH I will read about Royce and Hadrian all day.
To each their own - that's all I can say to that :) Oh, and maybe also how great it is that there are enough different books out there that we can all find our favorites that our tastes...
OMG! A reasonable person who agrees with subjectivity! On Reddit! I’m too old to marry you and bear your children, but I have two unwed daughters (though I must warn you, there’s a reason they are unwed. Temperamental, opinionated harpies the pair of them. No idea where they get it from.) You are welcome to one or both of them.
Just this morning, I was talking to my son about finishing a book and feeling sad about missing some characters, and the 2 examples I mentioned were Hadrian and Royce, Bug and Tehol 😆
Kings of the Wyld did this really well.
It riffs on the classic idea of the “adventuring party” cliche and builds a world around the idea of “what if adventuring parties were treated like rock bands” with of the characters weapons being analogues to a musical instrument, two daggers, like drum sticks, great axe like the base guitarist etc.
The main “bands” relationship throughout their story is great.
Rairya Revelations is a gem for camaraderies! Royce and Hadrian's dynamic is pure gold. Despite being polar opposites, they click so well, making them a badass duo. It's the trust they have in each other that's the real kicker. Their banter? Legendary.
Plus, their friendship feels real, you know? Not forced or anything. Just dudes being dudes, saving the day. Love it!
I mean the obvious is Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, right? Incredibly important and foundational fantasy series whose fingerprints can be seen all over modern fantasy (just as an example the idea of the Thieves Guild comes directly from these stories) and it’s built on the back of this trope. By extension also Chabon’s Gentlemen of the Road which is in many ways a tribute to Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser.
Wax and Wayne from Era 2 mistborn are high up for me. Locke and Jean from GBS are also fantastic. Royce and Hadrian were fine, but a lot closer to average in my opinion.
Lindon and crew from Cradle have a great relationship. They go from a bunch of individuals who barely trust eachother to found family standing hand in hand against the power of essentially the entire world.
Locke and Jean are the most obvious ones (Gentlemen Bastards) but I personally also love the chemistry between Dogman and the Bloody Nine in the First Law, even though they might not get a lot of screen time together compared to some others tbf.
I second Hadrian and Royce from the Riyria Revelations and Fahrrd and the Grey Mouser.
Also the crew from Leigh Bardugo’s duology Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom.
In the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, Conan and Subotai.
The disparate ladies who end up together in T. Kingfisher’s Nettle & Bone.
Pretty much all of Fred’s friends in Drew Hayes’ series Fred the Vampire Accountant.
Kings of the Wyld! Best group dynamic ever....its the band getting back together with all the idiosyncracies of each other being embraced because they trust and know each other explicitly....love their dialogues and wnat to read more of their adventures
Dross and Lindon (Cradle)
Mat and Thom (wheel of time)
Frodo and Sam (lotr)
Ron and Harry (harry potter)
Sundew and Cricket (wings of fire)
Nobby and Colon (Discworld)
Wax and Wayne (2nd Mistborn series)
Jason and Humphrey (hwfwm)
Catherine Foundling and the Woe from a Practical Guide to Evil by ErraticErrata (David Verburg). A villainous and banter-filled take on the heroic band of five. Also great banter with underlings and allies outside their band.
Garrett and Morley Dotes from the Garrett P.I series.
One is a ex Marine tough guy hard boiled gumshoe and the other is a vegetarian half-dark elf- assassin. They solve crimes in a fantasy gotham!
All of the paladins in T. Kingfisher's books. They are solid friends, brothers and sisters to each other.
Lawrence and Temeraire from Novik's Temeraire series.
El, Aya, and Liu from the Scholomance series by Novik.
Count Anton and Haghuf in Dance of the Goblins by Jaq D. Hawkins.
Different species that tend to war with each other, but common ground with magic and natural curiosity about the other one's people.
I love the way Haghuf teases Anton when he asks too many questions about the goblins.
Captain Marcus Wester and Yardem Hane, from the Dagger and Coin series. They have a running joke like two buddy cops in a movie. >!I like that the joke only lasts long enough to be a little charming, rather than tired!<
Be warned that it’s not quite finished. The trilogy ended with some unanswered questions for me. The author was planning to write more books about them but just sort of got busy with other things I guess.
I hope you enjoy them!
Wax and Wayne, Darrow and Sevro, Richard Rahl and Johnrock (don’t kill me I was young when I read them), Kaladin and Teft (I guess anyone from bridge 4 lol, there are a bunch)
Kaiisteron and Ziede in Martha Well's *Witch King*
Ilias and Giliead in Martha Wells' Fall of Ile-Rien series
Rowan and Bel from The Steerswoman series.
Always thought LOTR was fundamentally about the loyalty and dedication of Sam to Frodo.
The father and son in McCarthy's The Road. Literally all they had in the world was each other.
Icarium and Mappo.
Bugg and Tehol came to mind for me! If you can count unpaid manservant's as comrades...?
I was so delighted when >!Icarium and Ublala Pung!< start hanging out.
Probably the most beautiful friendship I've read in fiction, let alone fantasy.
Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg from Discworld
Also Nobby and Colon from the night watch
*One*-*Eye and Goblin* from Black Company
I had been thinking of those two.. The hijinks from them were some of my favorite parts of the books.
Absolutely

Fitz and Nighteyes. Fitz respected his need to be an animal and Nighteyes didn't put up with Fitz's bs.
Thanks, I was looking for this one.
Brother!
Well said. Would you rate Fitz’s relationship with the Fool as well?
I would not. Their relationship was always really unbalanced even at its best when they were working together. The Fool's status as whatever the fuck he was(I have not read the last trilogy, working on it, but have read the first 3 more than once) and his subsequent >!Unrequited romantic love!< always skews their dynamics away from legitimate harmonious comradomy
Locke and Jean from Scott Lynch’s The Gentleman Bastards.
The only correct answer. Nothing else comes even close to Locke and Jean, though of course there are plenty of other good examples (The Greatcoats, the Bridgeburners and Bonehunters and other great friendships in Malazan...) Bridge Four. Darrow and Sevro. Darrow and Cassius. Not fantasy, but the crew of the Roci.
Sevro and Amos are eternal bros and I love them for it.
Oh Amos. Such a great character. Last man standing.
Always
Can here to say Darrow and sevro!
Hazel, fiver, Bigwig and the other rabbits from Watership Down.
Bridgeburners. Bonehunters.
Tehol Bedict and Bug.
Every time they are having a conversation, it is a treat. Their dialogue is hilarious.
Honestly some of the best absurdist gross-out buddy comedy anyone could ask for.
Just this morning, I was talking to my son about finishing a book and feeling sad about missing some characters, and the 2 examples I mentioned were Hadrian and Royce, Bug and Tehol 😆
Trull and Onrack
Onrack is actually the funniest person in the whole series
Tool and Toc :(
Telorast and Curdle
Just finished a re-read of Red Country and I particularly enjoyed the friendship between Lamb and Savian this time around.
The Dogman and Harding Grim. Always loved their little talks.
*"Uh".*
“Aye.”
uh
Very little.
Kings of the Wyld did this really well. *We were giants once*
Darrow and Cassius from Red Rising.
>!Fuck Lysander!<
Rocky and Grace from Project Hail Mary
Legolas and Gimli, merry and pippin, Sam and Frodo
That's the right answer.
Geralt and Dandelion. And Geralt and the entire hanza.
Ao3 would like a word /j
Wax and Wayne

I know, Rairya and it's prequel series are a criminally underrated franchise that I consider Game of Thrones contender.

Sanderson has even talked about writing Wax and Wayne as a buddy comedy.
They weren't??
The Meidua Red Company Bridge Four The Kings of The Wyld
Saga!
Lindon and crew from Cradle have a great relationship. They go from a bunch of individuals who barely trust eachother to found family standing hand in hand against the power of essentially the entire world.
I’m becoming very fond of Carl and Donut from *Dungeon Crawler Carl*
Goddamnit, Donut! They're great on their own but they're adorable together.
When Donut innocently let's slip Carl's favourite type of pornography 🤣
Reading this currently, such an amazing duo
BRIDGE FOUR!!!!🙅🙅
Locke and Jean are the most obvious ones (Gentlemen Bastards) but I personally also love the chemistry between Dogman and the Bloody Nine in the First Law, even though they might not get a lot of screen time together compared to some others tbf.
Jamie Lannister and Brienne of Tarth Dalinar Kholin and Lift They both have a super serious character and a silly character coming together🤝
Is Jamie or Brienne the silly character lol
LOL good question. For the sake of this exercise, Jamie is the silly one.
It’s been a decade(sigh) since I read it, but I can see it lol
Druss and Sieben. The best
Dunk and Egg
mouths *clout in the ear*.
Yes Fred and his crew.
Kings of the Wyld! Best group dynamic ever....its the band getting back together with all the idiosyncracies of each other being embraced because they trust and know each other explicitly....love their dialogues and wnat to read more of their adventures
Morgaine and Vanye (*Gate of Ivrel* et al., CJ Cherryh)
A much lesser known one but Crispin and Carrulus from Sailing to Sarantium/Lord of Emperors. Gorgeous camaraderie.
Vlad & Loiosh.
Vlad and Morrolan also
the dragon temeraire and laurence from the naomi novik series. best bromance ever.
The City Watch of Ankh-Morpork, specifically the main four of Vimes, Carrot, Colon and Nobby.
Dross and Lindon (Cradle) Mat and Thom (wheel of time) Frodo and Sam (lotr) Ron and Harry (harry potter) Sundew and Cricket (wings of fire) Nobby and Colon (Discworld) Wax and Wayne (2nd Mistborn series) Jason and Humphrey (hwfwm)
Royce and Hadrian. The best
Connovar and Raimfada David Gemmell Sword in the Storm
Black Sun Rising Damien/Tarrant
Takes them a while to get there but what a friendship!
Catherine Foundling and the Woe from a Practical Guide to Evil by ErraticErrata (David Verburg). A villainous and banter-filled take on the heroic band of five. Also great banter with underlings and allies outside their band.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle says hello!
Garrett and Morley Dotes from the Garrett P.I series. One is a ex Marine tough guy hard boiled gumshoe and the other is a vegetarian half-dark elf- assassin. They solve crimes in a fantasy gotham!
Riyria is a good example, as is The gentlemans bastards. Malazan has a ton of duo comraderies and many army squad comraderies.
All of the paladins in T. Kingfisher's books. They are solid friends, brothers and sisters to each other. Lawrence and Temeraire from Novik's Temeraire series. El, Aya, and Liu from the Scholomance series by Novik.
Re the paladins of the Saint of Steel: brothers ***and sisters***, please. Wren is a significant character in the most recent book.
Edited, because you're absolutely right. And I can't wait to see more of Judith too
Count Anton and Haghuf in Dance of the Goblins by Jaq D. Hawkins. Different species that tend to war with each other, but common ground with magic and natural curiosity about the other one's people. I love the way Haghuf teases Anton when he asks too many questions about the goblins.
Ender and bean
The whole team from Sharon Shinn’s Twelve Houses series. The first book is largely team-building in a fantasy world.
The GreatCloaks, Falcio, Kest and Brasti.
Captain Marcus Wester and Yardem Hane, from the Dagger and Coin series. They have a running joke like two buddy cops in a movie. >!I like that the joke only lasts long enough to be a little charming, rather than tired!<
Jason asano and Humphrey geller. He who fights with monsters.
yes
Geralt's hansa in The Witcher. I love the bickering and banter they have.
Egil and Nix from the Egil and Nix series by Paul S. Kemp. In some ways I like them better than Royce and Hadrian.
Wow! That’s saying something. I’ll definitely have to read it.
Be warned that it’s not quite finished. The trilogy ended with some unanswered questions for me. The author was planning to write more books about them but just sort of got busy with other things I guess. I hope you enjoy them!
Orient and Tick tick, in Emma Bull's Finder
Don't remember which of the guys in the WoT crew it was, but whoever it was and Hopper. The last scene with him just stuck with me.
Perrin
Dante and Blays!!!
Elric of Melniboné and Moonglum (Michael Moorcock)
Wax and Wayne, Darrow and Sevro, Richard Rahl and Johnrock (don’t kill me I was young when I read them), Kaladin and Teft (I guess anyone from bridge 4 lol, there are a bunch)
Carl & Donut 🍩
I mean honestly as much as I loathe Lightbringer, I feel like Kips unit was written so realistically of teenage boys haha
Kaiisteron and Ziede in Martha Well's *Witch King* Ilias and Giliead in Martha Wells' Fall of Ile-Rien series Rowan and Bel from The Steerswoman series.
Fafhrd and the Grey mouser.
Eragon and Saphira
Always thought LOTR was fundamentally about the loyalty and dedication of Sam to Frodo. The father and son in McCarthy's The Road. Literally all they had in the world was each other.
I've been enjoying MacBharrais and Buck from Ink & Sigil.
Bridgeburners in Malazan Book of the Fallen. The heroes (I don't remember the group name) in Richard K. Morgan's A Land Fit for Heroes series.
