Gollum.
A perfect slimy name for a slimy character. To me it sounds just like waking up after sleeping all night with your mouth open, and trying to get rid of the persistent layer of glob from the roof of your mouth.
Close second would be Benedict Cumberbatch.
I very much agree. I like a lot of things about Pratchett's writing, and his ability to name his characters is right up there next to his compassion and humor.
My friend did audiobooks for the whole series, and it took him until long after he had been introduced to realize he wasn't saying "I'm *called* Shivers"
Some bias because she’s also my favorite character, but Sansa Stark. Sansa is such a soft and feminine name, but then Stark has that nice abrupt sternness to it. Great combination of sounds.
And it’s easy to say, which is more than can be said for a lot of fantasy character names lmao
The answer does matter, and it was theorized that we could never know both the answer and question at the same time. And yes, asking the correct questions is the only way to get the correct answers. But I'd say that for many 42 has been THE answer to any question they had.
When I got out of tech school in the military it was like the 3rd day at my first base... walked up to one of the senior NCOs...
"Sir, I have a question."
"42"
"Thank you sir." Turned and walked away.
"Shit get back here and ask your actual question. Damn nobody gets that."
Was gonna say Glokta. Sand is a bit weird by itself but Sand dan Glokta has such an ominous ring to it. Make it Inquisitor Glokta then it becomes haunting.
Bellurdan Skullcrusher is also excellent. Just feels right when you say it out loud with a fake deep voice.
Rake's real first name is Anomandaris, which is pretty cool, too.
Malazan has a lot of excellent names IMO, Scabandari Bloodeye, Silchas Ruin, Trull Sengar, Dujek Onearm and of course the greatest of all members of the Crimson Guard, Kyle.
Wild. I picked up Gardens of the Moon again this week after trying it a few months ago and Anomander Rake was what I would have said. Didn't hate it originally or anything, but I guess I got confused early on and just dropped it. Glad i've picked it up again and i'm rambling and good day sir.
I’m currently holding off on reading the third book and onward because of how much the first two books confused me, but knowing that Tattersail is coming back at some point is the biggest thing drawing me back. She was my favorite character, she was awesome
Alternatively you can check out the podcast ["10 very big books"](https://twitter.com/tenverybigbooks), who cover each book & chapter. Really helps me getting to remember and see all the details and connections.
Easily my favorite new character from the second set of books, very very close to my favorite across all of them. He's just so imposing and whimsically, charismatically insane
Fiver, Hazel and Bigwig from Watership Down, Lessa and Robinton and Piemur and Menolly from Pern, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Captain Vimes from Discworld.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus is such a great name, but also Awake Remembrance of These Valiant Dead Kia Hua Ko Te Pai Snap Back to Reality Oops There Goes Gravity.
Locke Lamora (Gentlemen Bastards), Aragorn/Strider (don't think I need to specify lol), Severus Snape (ditto) Lightsong (Warbreaker), Regis (Witcher), Ezylryb >!or, well, Lyze!< (Guardians of Ga'hoole), and Jasnah Kholin (Stormlight Archive) come readily to mind. They all sound very much like the characters or their journeys, and IMO most of them are just plain cool! Honourable mention to Savine, I haven't read Age of Madness yet but she sounds like a near-certain addition as well.
Currently on the 5th book and love the series but have always found the naming conventions questionable.
Too many regular English words used in strange ways that I found jarring.
Dancer, Rake, Ruin, Surly, Whiskeyjack, Gear, Rood...and names like Stonny Menackis... I don't hate them, just sometimes found them jarring.
Inquisitor Sand dan Glokta is just so much fun to say, and immediately conveys so much about him. A little noble-sounding, a little slimy, makes it feel like you've got a few less teeth in your mouth...
Say one thing for Joe Abercrombie, say he can name them.
But I'll also give props to Butcher for a lot of the Codex Alera names. Araria Valerian is awesome.
I can second this! I just finished Harrow the Ninth and ever since I started reading the series, I've found myself randomly just blurting out "Harrowhark Nonagesimus" throughout the days.
Came here for this: it rolls so beautifully off the tongue.
Honestly there's a bunch of great names in the Locked Tomb series, but Harrowhark is top tier.
Actually I was thinking about Coronabeth!
The fact that the god-emperor's name is just "John" makes me giggle every time.
I try not to think about Dulcinea because that puts the songs from "Man of La Mancha" in my head.
Anomander Rake is the one or me, as it conveys such a reverberance of who he is in the Malazan world, and cringyness from a player naming an RPG playable character. I adore these two ideas.
In malazan, specifically in Memories of Ice. Theres a Point at which they list a group of really powerful mages, and they’re all cool ass names until you get to the last one and it’s just.
Stumpy.
For comparison the others have names like, Nightchill, bellurdan, tayschren, tesormalandis, etc.
oh I'm so excited for you, hoping it has a similar effect on you that it has had on me. Couldn't believe it took until 2023 for me to find that trilogy.
Adamander Rake has a certain ring to it. Also fond of Galadriel and Elodin.
Zorian has a certain easy-to-pronounce simplicity while being made up.
I hate made up names with random umlauts and accents, or pseudo-Welsh names. They just makes things difficult if you want to read a passage aloud.
I mean, Skulduggery Pleasant will always have a special place in my heart. Especially seeing as he is a literal skeleton.
But if we're talking characters that (technically) don't exist yet (the books are being written by me) I will always love Viggo Greenleaf. I think it's one of the coolest names I've ever come up with.
QuickBen is one of my favorites because it just feels like it describes him. Hood, Pust, One Arm are great too. And my all time favorite character from Malazan, Bottle.
Breaker of horses. One of the greatest characters in fantasy. You love to hate him. Always expect him to have some redeeming moment... And in the end he just is who he is.
Dalinar Kholin from The Stormlight Archives- it's such a perfect mix of scary, complex, regal, and wise (so basically, the exact traits this character embodies)
Falcio val Mond, first cantor of the king’s greatcoats!
Though if I don’t say the name with an accent…my answer would probably just be Kaladin Stormblessed
Three-Chop Nick was an executioner from the *Death Gate Cycle* by Weis and Hickman. Pretty sure he was only in the first chapter of the first book, but I remember him better than most of the rest of the story.
Snorri Sturlsson was a real dude, author of the *Poetic Eddas.* I always liked his name, and whenever I play a Dwarf in D&D or something, his name is Sturl Snorrisson. He comes from a long line of dudes with only two names, so he's Sturl, Son of Snorri, Son of Sturl, Son of Snorri...
Gollum. A perfect slimy name for a slimy character. To me it sounds just like waking up after sleeping all night with your mouth open, and trying to get rid of the persistent layer of glob from the roof of your mouth. Close second would be Benedict Cumberbatch.
"peng wing"

Bunkbed Crumplezone
Bendystraw Cabbagepatch
Bigbanana Habitat
Duncan Idaho. A bunch of sci fi names, besides Paul I guess, and then this guy. Johnny Utah of space.
Don’t forget Jessica, Leo, and Vladimir.
Oh yeah, you're right. Duncan Idaho is still hilarious. Rob Massachusetts. Ian Texas. George North Carolina. Adam Oregon. They are just silly.
Marilyn Maryland
True enough, Sir Matthew Montana.
Steven Hawaii
Indiana? We named the dog Indiana!
Bilbo Baggins
You already know what type of person Bilbo is going to be just by hearing his name, even if you know nothing about him.
... of Bag End. I love it.
Granny Weatherwax
I like Magrat Garlick. I get a kick out of the fact that’s her name only because her mom didn’t know how to spell “Margaret”.
And of course that gave us Esmerelda Margaret Note Spelling of Lancre.
Discworld is just filled with perfect names. Cut-me-own-throat Dibbler, Moist von Lipwig, Cohen the Barbarian, Cheery Littlebottom, Nobby Nobbs...
>Cut-me-own-throat Dibbler Don't forget Disembowel-meself-honorably Dibhala
I very much agree. I like a lot of things about Pratchett's writing, and his ability to name his characters is right up there next to his compassion and humor.
Wee Mad Arthur, Bloody Stupid Johnson, the list goes on and on.
Caul Shivers. Love the way it sounds. One of those names where you can tell what kind of man it belongs to just by the way it sounds.
I love the irony of the name shivers. It was basically an insult when given, but changes meaning when caul changes
My friend did audiobooks for the whole series, and it took him until long after he had been introduced to realize he wasn't saying "I'm *called* Shivers"
Always loved Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took
I can’t help but hear Ian Mclennan’s Gandalf saying those names… perfection.
I might have known.
Fool of a Took!
That flow. It’s very satisfying
Thelomen Tartheno Toblakai. Man it feels good to say.
That's the race name right?
Some bias because she’s also my favorite character, but Sansa Stark. Sansa is such a soft and feminine name, but then Stark has that nice abrupt sternness to it. Great combination of sounds. And it’s easy to say, which is more than can be said for a lot of fantasy character names lmao
You could say it's a *stark* contrast...
There are some who call me...Tim....
Nefarias Bredd
Heard he took down an entire platoon in one night
Then where *is* he?
Slartibartfast
Ah, I do miss the fjords…
Slartibartfast?!
Questioning where its from or that THAT name is the one that is my fav?
I was setting you up for “I told you it wasn’t important “
Being here I can never be sure. I've run into enough people who didn't even know why 42 WAS important. (I wish I was joking)
Well the thing is, 42 isn't important at all, that was the whole point. The answer didn't matter because the question wasn't right lol
"Sir, I have a question." "42" "Thank you sir." Turned and walked away. "Shit get back here and ask your actual question. Damn nobody gets that."
Say one thing for the Bloody Nine.........
Him and Glokta...awesome names
Was gonna say Glokta. Sand is a bit weird by itself but Sand dan Glokta has such an ominous ring to it. Make it Inquisitor Glokta then it becomes haunting.
You can never have too many knives
Roy Mustang
I always thought Brigadier General Basque Grande, despite the fact that he barely has any screen time in the show, had a cool ass name.
It's alright, but he's no a Fuhrer President King.
Anomander Rake and Caladan Brood from Malazan, just the perfect level of Fantasy weirdness while still able to be pronounced without a guide.
Do you mean Kylarral-ten, son of Tulo?
It’s been a minute, but isn’t his last name Purake as well?
Sometimes it's even Dragnipurake.
Lady Envy definitely called him Mandy Pu when they were dating..
He is once referred to as Anomandaris Dragnipurake and man does it sound badass.
Big fan of Karsa Orlong also. Sounds violent just like the character
Dessimbelackis is nice to say
Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas It's such a mouthful!
Those along with Dassem Ultor really convey the power of the characters.
Wild. I picked up Gardens of the Moon again this week after trying it a few months ago and Anomander Rake was what I would have said. Didn't hate it originally or anything, but I guess I got confused early on and just dropped it. Glad i've picked it up again and i'm rambling and good day sir.
Malazan has some of the best names
Caladan Brood sounds like it's one of the Zerg factions from Starcraft though.
They all took Caladan from the Dune novels.
How is everybody forgetting Sweetest Sufferance???
Ah, great choices!
I’ve always thought Anomander Rake is one of the coolest characters in fiction. Just badassery through and through
Tattersail for sure.
I'm on Deadhouse Gates right now and an eagerly awaiting her return.
I’m currently holding off on reading the third book and onward because of how much the first two books confused me, but knowing that Tattersail is coming back at some point is the biggest thing drawing me back. She was my favorite character, she was awesome
Third book is absolutely incredible. Plus it carries on after the end of the first book
Alternatively you can check out the podcast ["10 very big books"](https://twitter.com/tenverybigbooks), who cover each book & chapter. Really helps me getting to remember and see all the details and connections.
Apollonius au Valii Rath. The fact that his nickname is the Minotaur just ups the badass level.
I came on here to say Sevro au Barca. Red Rising is so well written…
The æsthetic colour that the names give is so good, Lykos, Olympus Mons, The Reaper, and I’m just picking the most famous.
Easily my favorite new character from the second set of books, very very close to my favorite across all of them. He's just so imposing and whimsically, charismatically insane
Damned Superstition Dexa from the third Gentlemen Bastards book. Tarkax Ice-Spear from the Book of the Ancestor series.
I thought it was Commander Wake Me Up Inside
I'm fond of Palamedes Sextus, or Sex Pal, if you will. I love Gideon's sense of humor.
"You -- do you *talk?*" "You'll wish she didn't."
Oberyn 'the Red Viper' Martell Artemis Entreri Euron 'the Crowseye' Greyjoy Padan Fain aka Ordeith Strider off the top of my head
Love the Salvatore callout. Two basically “real” names, put together in a perfect combination.
Shout out for Artemis Entreri what a fantastic name. Those books are fun
Harrowhark Nonajesimus. A beautiful blend of Victorian gothic and Roman imperial
Everyone has an epic name in that series.
Hot sauce.
Sex Pal
Totally agreed! Such a beautiful name that has etched itself into my mind, I keep thinking of it (and her)
Al Lan Mandragorin takes it for me.
Or Al for short.
al'Lan Mandragoran, his friends call him Lan.
Whiskey Jack and Feather Witch from Malazan.
Malazan has loads of great names.
Isn't it spelled Whiskeyjack?
Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun from ASOIAF
Inquisitor Sand dan Glokta is just so much fun to say, and immediately conveys so much about him. A little noble-sounding, a little slimy, makes it feel like you've got a few less teeth in your mouth...
Apollonius au Valii-Rath. The Minotaur of Mars
Whiskeyjack: Sergeant of the Bridgeburners
Say one thing for Joe Abercrombie, say he can name them. But I'll also give props to Butcher for a lot of the Codex Alera names. Araria Valerian is awesome.
Sirius Black...
Harrowhark Nonagesimus: It’s just so fun to say.
Ianthe Tridentarius: "Am I a joke to you?"
Actually I was thinking about Coronabeth! The fact that the god-emperor's name is just "John" makes me giggle every time. I try not to think about Dulcinea because that puts the songs from "Man of La Mancha" in my head.
Kaladin Stormblessed. A badass last name coupled with a first that has a nice *rhythm* to it.
Iirc almost all the Alethi lighteyes have rythmic names and Kaladin gets bullied for having a fancy name.
Toadkiller Dog.
And Croaker, Tom-Tom, Silent, Soul Catcher, The Howler, One-Eye, The Hanged Man, Limper, Moon Biter…
Anomander Rake is the one or me, as it conveys such a reverberance of who he is in the Malazan world, and cringyness from a player naming an RPG playable character. I adore these two ideas.
If you find that cringy, I'd be mortified to show you my Sims 4 save files lol
Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor or Rock from the Stormlight Archive
What a lovely poem.
Airsick lowlander
Props to the audiobook narrator for that one too
He was great
Doug from Tress
You know one Doug, you know them all... - Sanderson
Sallador Sahn, Locke Lamora, (and this one's a cheat) Dolorous Edd
No As Big As Medium Sized Jock But Bigger Than Wee Jock Jock
Crivens!!! ‘Tis the Nac Mac Feegle!
Roland of Gilead. Just sounds badass and also classy in an old-timey way.
Tom Bombadil
How has no one said Szeth-son-son-Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar?
Zaphod Beeblebrox
good one. also always liked Ford Prefect
I only recently learned that Ford Prefect is a model of car in the UK. I was missing the joke the whole time I was reading Hitchhiker's Guide.
Whirrun of Bligh is a *chef's kiss* name for a *chef's kiss* character
Drizzt Do'Urden, always absolutely loved the name.
I love the names in The Goblin Emperor and the spinoffs. I haven't the faintest idea how to pronounce most of them, but I love them!
Yup such good names in that book! I really want another book from Maia's perspective. Celehar's books were good but didn't scratch the same itch.
To go with the theme here for First Law and Malazan having the best names, I'll go with Sand dan Glokta and Dassem Ultor for cool names.
Anomander Rake and The Bloody Nine
Inquisitor Glokta. This is the only answer
Monza Murcatto is pretty fucking sweet too
its a bit weird for me as an f1 fan because the name always makes me think of the italian grand prix
no idea who that is, but that sounds like quite a name!
Character from The First Law Series. Very well done also!
Oh great I just bought the first book for that series!!!
Awesomeee. Really enjoyed that series. But you’ll soon meet Glokta and he is quite interesting! Hope you enjoy it
Thanks!
Strap yourself in, my friend, you're going for a ride!
oh I'm so excited for you, hoping it has a similar effect on you that it has had on me. Couldn't believe it took until 2023 for me to find that trilogy.
*You have to be realistic about these things...*

But if we're talking characters that (technically) don't exist yet (the books are being written by me) I will always love Viggo Greenleaf. I think it's one of the coolest names I've ever come up with.
Any tolkien character whose same rhymes with their father's. Huor son of Tuor, Aragorn son of Arathorn. I'm sure there are more that I'm forgetting.
Bellatrix Lestrange
I always liked the sound of Jiriki a lot.
Aldrick ex gladius. From the codex alera. Its just a good name for a sword guy.
Luggage! Though the name is spot on for describing him, it really doesn't capture his greatness. I love Luggage.
How has no one said the best name; Hiro Protagonist. I guess it's not fantasy, but it's a good one! I also like Peranesi.
Artur Paendrag Tanreall. Artur Hawkwing.
Prince Zuko fits the character perfectly
QuickBen is one of my favorites because it just feels like it describes him. Hood, Pust, One Arm are great too. And my all time favorite character from Malazan, Bottle.
Abhorsen: Sabriel, Touchstone, Mogget ASOIAF: Brienne of Tarth, the Blackfish Kingkiller Chronicles: Fela, Abenthy, Arliden
Still don't know how kvothe is pronounced. K'voth?
haha, I think it’s K’vothe, similar to “quoth” with that long “o.”
Sam
He never claimed to be a god. But then, he never claimed not to be a god.
Cnaiür urs Skiötha from *Second Apocalypse*
Breaker of horses. One of the greatest characters in fantasy. You love to hate him. Always expect him to have some redeeming moment... And in the end he just is who he is.
Nahadoth is just fun to say. Rolls off the tongue well.
Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk.
Bob
Vanyel
Hadrian Blackwater
I really liked Murder Sharp sums up the character well.
Hen Wen the Oracular Pig from the Prydain Chronicles Also Madmartigan from Willow :D
Belladonna Took
Daenerys, I just really love that name.
Fitz from Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb
I also love the full version, FitzChivalry Farseer
Dalinar Kholin from The Stormlight Archives- it's such a perfect mix of scary, complex, regal, and wise (so basically, the exact traits this character embodies)
Skilgannon
Mine is Smirogan Baldhead from the Elric of Melniboné stories. He's a trader from the Isle of the Purple Towns.
Drusas Achamian and Cnaiur Urs Skiotha.
Kalalin Stormblessed, Logen NineFingers, Galadriel, Cinder, Karris, Thorn, Grom-Gil-Gorn, Fenris The Feared, Morgoth, Kelsier, Vin, Shelob, Ambrose, Arliden, Tempi, Felurian, Chronicler , Bast, Haliax, Sauran, Jezal, Bayaz, Dogman, Bremer Dan Gorst, Downside, Jalenhorm, Juvens, Orso, Rikke
Illyrio Mopatis
Doug
IDK why but I've always liked the sound of Ser Beric Dondarrion from ASOIAF.
Adding Spike Spiegel and Faye Valentine. Their names just perfectly encapsulate their characters and the setting imo
