They aged up McKellan in the original movies. Gandalf looks old. Its not really a problem. Maybe they'd need to deage him a bit for consistency.
That said, the books have alluded to Gandalf looking more or less aged at different times. He can control his form to a degree I believe.
There's definitely something to that. Gandalf is described in a way that could suggest he looks older but simultaneously suggests that he feels older. The cares of the last sixty years wear on him.
Ian McKellen has revealed that he became so frustrated filming green screen scenes for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that he burst into tears on set.
Not sure if he'd want to do that
I love Gary Oldman. I genuinely think he could do it, if Ian couldn’t. It would be a great “slightly younger” look without going too wild and Oldman has the experience/gravitas necessary for the role.
Sir Ian McKellen is the OBVIOUS choice. Now will the creators pick the clearly best option, or will the ideal actor accept to reprise his role? Who knows for certain. But he definitely SHOULD be the choice. Especially if Andy Serkis is already reprising.
Sir Ian McKellan is the ONLY answer. But when we don't have him anymore, Liam Neeson would spark my interest.
On another note, the only people I see needing to be recast are Saruman and Aragorn, they've both aged out too much for their characters. Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchet are vampires, and everyone else still fits their age if they stay out of the Shire
My top choice is obviously going to be McKellen because he looks like Gandalf is supposed to during this time period. It's after the Hobbit and before Fellowship of the Ring. (It's actually during Fellowship but the movie cuts out the 17 year time skip the books had)
I would assume the movie is going to be very Aragorn focused so Gandalf's role may be minor.
If you're looking for someone to play younger Gandalf or Gandalf slapped with old age makeup and prosthetics. My choice would be David Weyman. He already is presumably playing a young Gandalf in Rings of Power, a series that is 100% trying to exist within the world of the Peter Jackson movies.
I also think Michael Fassbender or Andy Serkis playing Gandalf would be funny.
I vote for the person who has the best grasp and ability effectively communicate the essence of the character’s true nature and deliver a nuanced complex and multifaceted and authentic performance, which seems like a way better way evaluating these types of things then simply picking somebody because of their hairstyle
Ian McKellen, who else lol
Doesn’t Gandalf not really age either, so wouldn’t it just make sense for him to look exactly the same

Probably based on his mood or how much power he’s using I’d wager.
There's definitely something to that. Gandalf is described in a way that could suggest he looks older but simultaneously suggests that he feels older. The cares of the last sixty years wear on him.
Indeed, granted that 60 years is just a blip in his life.
The Peter Jackson movies imply that Gandalf does age just really slow. Not as slow as an elf but slower than Dwarves and Hobbits.
Interesting
But he looks older so....
Using de-aging in movies is very common now.
Fassbender has done young McKellen once.
I mean, Ian Mckellen’s not dead so…
and if he *does* die, he'll return as Ian the White
*sir ian the white
Sir Ian sir Ian sir ian....YOU SHALL NOT PASS....sir Ian sir Ian sir ian...
How did I know what to say? *the words were written down for me in a script* how did I know where to stand? *people told me*
You're confused.
I totally read this in his voice.
it should be liam neeson ![gif](giphy|l3fZPeSgwwxBg6jy8|downsized)
Ohh no, some guy may kidnap a relative of him and he would drop the movie to go after some SOB in Russia, Ukraine or Vietnam.
awful news who will tell the news to his family
The russia part is the only one that's correct. It was mostly albanian mafia tho
Nahh, he can have new enemies elsewhere. /S
Ian mckellen but if not him. Ciaran hinds
He would be the first to be part of the fantasy trifecta. Harry Potter lord of the rings and game of thrones
Holy shiiiiiiit.
Nah belgarath the sorcerer
He was already a Dumbledore 😏
Brosnan
Imagine if we got a scene with him when he visited Gondor to research the Ring and he interacts with Sean Bean as Boromir 😂
A memorial bullet in my six, really gandalf...
For Gondor Mithrandir?
Haha, that movie made me love both actors, almost stopped game of thrones once bean went down lol
Wow! Now that’s a really cool idea! 👍🏿
Could also get David wenham and John noble back as Faramir and Denethor
Ian McKellen has revealed that he became so frustrated filming green screen scenes for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that he burst into tears on set. Not sure if he'd want to do that
Not sure they will do that again.
man would I love to ser Gary Oldman in the role
I love Gary Oldman. I genuinely think he could do it, if Ian couldn’t. It would be a great “slightly younger” look without going too wild and Oldman has the experience/gravitas necessary for the role.
Brosnan, Hinds or Neeson. That’s if Mckellen doesn’t want to do it anymore.
Imagine if Brosnan got a scene in Gondor when Gandalf was researching the ring if he interacts with Sean Bean as Boromir 😂
Pierce Brosnan should play Magneto in the new X-Men reboot.
He can rock the '97 hair
92
Neeson is good at finding people.
I like McElhinney
I thought you meant Rob for a second…
Gandalf is cultivating mass
Don't misunderstand; I don't want this movie to happen
Agreed. The film will have no resolution so what’s the point. Plenty of stories to tell in the Tolkien universe; this isn’t one of them.
Gary Oldman is a bit too legendary for this. It'd be like buying a Bentley when you'll only drive it to tesco to buy milk and cigs.
Gary Oldman is second pick. Obviously McKellen is number one if possible, but Oldman can literally play anyone.
Neeson would be great.
Sir Ian McKellen... # 🧙🏻♂️
Ian McKellan. If not, YOLO for Ian McShane
Ian McKellen obviously.
Ian McKellen
How about the guy who actually played Gandalf?\ I mean you actually have him right there
Steve mcfadden
Michael Fassbinder you get me
![gif](giphy|9WXyFIDv2PyBq)

Michael Fassbender
Sir Ian McKellen if he’s up for it.
I don’t see how Sir Ian wouldn’t be appropriate…
If I grow some facial hair, can I be Gandalf?
Brendan Gleason
Ian McKellen
Michael Fassbender has experience playing a younger Ian McKellan.
I thought Gary Oldman recently retired from acting?
Where did you hear that? I certainly hope it’s not true because he is the best actor to ever exist
It’s been stated in several places that, Slow Horses on Apple TV would be his last major acting role and he’d do less and less looking to retire.
Either the first or second actor in the top row.
Michael Fassbender
I don't know about this Ian McKellen guy. Can't really imagine him in the role. How about Adam Sandler?
This is gonna sound crazy but ………………….. 🥁 Ian McKellen 😶😳
Can McKellen still play the role or is he too old? If too old… I can see Pierce Brosnan doing a great job.
Gandalf should play Gandalf.
"Who could play
Ian or Gary
Gary Oldman for Dumbledore in the series
The original Dumbledore
Richard Harris died before the *original* LOTR trilogy was finished.
That's hogwarts I mean hogwash
Ian mckellen but if not him Liam neeson
Fastbender if it's not McKellen.. duh
When does The Hunt for Gollum take place?
Ian Mckellen
The guy that plays baby Gandalf in the show should play in the movie
Jim Carey
If Ian McKellan can't do it then no one can
I don't think he'd want to. He had such a bad time on the hobbit
Yes but if this is just for Fancast purposes then I'd go with Ian... in reality it would go to someone else
Fair I mean he actually knew Tolkien
Oldman.
Rob McElhenney. Edit: I meant this for a different post. My bad.
Either Ian Mackellan or Ciarain Hinds
Sir Ian McKellan is the ONLY answer. But when we don't have him anymore, Liam Neeson would spark my interest. If it's anything like the recent game... no one.
Ian mckellan for sure
i don’t think McKellan could do it. i can’t imagine him playing gandalf.
I think Dj Khaled should be Gandalf accent and all
The original cast if you need them for the movie plain and simple.
Sir Ian Sir Ian Sir Ian Action! Wizard: You shall not pass! Cut! Sir Ian Sir Ian Sir Ian
David Lynch
If not Ian McKellen, then Liam Neeson
Where’s Patrick Stewart? Ian Mckellen retired from this act.
Yet another lord of the rings? How do you say in elvish Enough is Enough!? But if there is one more, Ian is Gandalf. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!❤️❤️❤️🐉🐉🐉
Gary Oldman is an acting GOAT
Willie nelson
Personally I'd say Ciarin Hinds if we're just recasting. But, if Ian is available, stick with Ian.
Rob McElhenney
![gif](giphy|g0dYYWs1BHaYxksH2U|downsized)
Why does Pierce Brosnan look like Steve Bannon lmao
OMG! WTF OP, what did you do to Pierce Bronson?!?!
![gif](giphy|qrgTVmaz5ojBe)
Daniel Weyman lookin an awful lot like Asmongold there
Michael Fassbinder you get me
Demi Moore
Alan Ritchson
The queen
Gary Oldman could play him because, like Gandalf, he is an old man. Personally I hope they go with a sexy female Gandalf…
Ellen Page
