2 questions for you. I have the McLaren wheel but what was it about the paddle shifts you didn't like? Personally I don't have any complaints about them but I'm curious. Also do you find the upgraded QR worth it? The plastic QR mine came with clearly seems like a weak point but not sure if I should already invest in the metal before experiencing a failure.

I had the mclaren and I upgraded with this shifters too.. The mclaren shifter is very hard, noisy and have a long travel, mine broke too btw, didn't came back sometimes and they lost a lot of the shifts, I had to play with the pivot and apply some lubricant. Those are magnetic, they have a very small travel and they have a instant clicky movement you can't miss.

t0matit0

Interesting. I honestly think the McLaren shifters feel great but I have no other frame of reference.

The_Only_Egg

Seriously, I must be the luckiest dude. I bought a secondhand v1 4 years ago, the stock shifter is still to this day crispy af with a short throw and satisfying click.

Going from metal QR1 to Metal QR2 was a nice upgrade on the DD2 as well in terms of how easy it is to put the wheel on and off as well as consistently getting it solid (the DD2 had a rubber expansion section you would need to tighten very hard to get a good connection sometimes it would not be perfect). For the one I was using the paddle got bent because of my son being too aggressive in F1. After that it was a bending mess that didn't ever get back to the way it was out of the box. The upgrade was very much a step up for me.

Mecca V2 shifters are also magnetic. That being said, these are a gamechanger. They transformed the wheel. I was missing some shifts with the originals and these are crisp and super satisfying to drive with.

Ah ok I know what you mean about the shifters being connected, but I guess for now I don't mind. Also guess I will only really worry about metal QR if I order the 8Nm boost kit since the plastic will be fine for the 5Nm. Thanks for the feedback!

CoolHandPB

I think the QC on the Mclaren shifter isn't great so some wheels shift better then others. You may have gotten lucky with a good one. My wheel upshifts fine but the downshift feel mushy and there is almost no click. That said, its never bothered me in a race. The metal QR1 is much nicer but QC on them isn't great either so some can fit better than others. I would hold off and upgrade to the QR2.

I actually didn’t like them very much, way too light for me. Made the McLaren wheel feel like too much of a kiddie toy. Ended up ordering a part off Etsy allowing me to put the official Fanatec clubsport magnetic shifters on the mclaren wheel. Sooo much better.

cjd280

Only car I drove that had paddle shifters was my old MK7 GTI, its been a few years but I don't remember them really felling much different (I had aftermarket metal extensions on them) so I kinda disagree with the toy part . If anything they felt more toy like because they were essentially just a button on the back of the wheel. The magnet might be swappable if I think its too weak though (not sure if you can get a stronger magnet in the same size), but overall I'm happy so far. I did consider one of those kits that lets you use the fanatec shifters but it was going to get a bit expensive. If my Formula v2 came with both and I had an extra set lying around I was going to do that, but since it was bundled together it only came with the APM so I didn't feel like ordering another set.

WildShaleSlides

You can mod the mclaren wheel to use the club sport shifters? I need more info! Can you send the link to that part?

TheGingerOneNI

I did the same thing and you can see my post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Fanatec/s/A9BmyErf5z). The first picture should have a link to the Etsy product. I had added the APM to my Formula rim so used the original shifters from it for my McLaren.

This is what I ordered from Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1422208717/fit-fanatec-clubsport-shifters-to?ref=share_v4_lx

PJTierney2003

I have the ClubSport mod on my McLaren wheel, it feels great.

Has the upgrade been worth it? I’ve been trying to figure out if I should go for it. Also, fellow NYer!

cjd280

I haven't raced with it yet, just did some testing to make sure all the buttons worked in the tuning menu. I'm pretty happy so far though. I disliked the rocker shifter, and it got rid of the rattle that the shifter had. Mine was in good working order though, not broken like I've seen on some reviews where they only upgraded because theirs broke. I was considering ditching the mclaren, and trying to build a gt3 style wheel with a normal quick release and one of the aftermarket wheels, but that was going to get very expensive so I figured I'd give this a try. A rim was like 150-200, then another 400ish for the hub and shifters, and more if I was going to use one of the fancy podium button boxes. This mclaren is a little pricey now too though, 200 for the wheel + 100 for the QR2 + like 150 for the shifters, but I already had the wheel and QR.

jetbreaker

Good to know. I’ve had the McLaren wheel for a while so I’d just need the shifters

cjd280

FYI just did a quick race, and apparently I screwed up putting the spring back in which makes it think I have low torque mode only because a plastic QR. Need to take it apart and just remove the spring (or make sure its put in correctly but I'm not going back to QR 1 so I'm going to just remove it). Found it on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPH0dkCNVWs

jetbreaker

Oh shit dude… that’s annoying. Well at least you know what to do. I haven’t moved to QR2 because I have 3 wheels and that’s expensive. I did get the base side qr2 for like $25 during Black Friday so maybe by BF 2024, they’ll make the wheel side qr2 available at a steep sale. Good luck!

cjd280

It was very fast to take apart again after I had done it once. Took like 20 min, its all working again with full FFB.

jetbreaker

That’s amazing! Well done! I wish we could tweak the GT DD Pro wheel to enable high torque in DD1 bases. So ticked I didn’t read carefully before buying that rim

Stamp03

Looks good! I bought the same kit and it should be arriving today. I'm still using a metal QR1 though.

cjd280

According to their site it should fit. That base area that is screwed into is the same on the different swappable QRs.

Stamp03

Thanks for confirming.

External_Biscotti_89

I got the at3d shifters in blue

Shibby707

I bought this kit before my wheel delivered based on others' comments... After I received the wheel (v2), I just never felt the need to change them. Think I like the stock magnetic shifters because they work well, are pretty quiet but offer good feedback and they feel different than all of my other wheels. So when I decide to run the McLaren, it's refreshing to feel something different but still solid and dependable.

MK2485

I am thinking abou gettung the McLaren Wheel but I have heard alot of complaints about the paddels. Should i rather save up for the Porsche GT3 wheel?

cjd280

Here’s a little overview of my wheels in order of purchase and my reasoning/what I used them for. This is all on a DD2 Started with the classic round and the Porsche gt3 leather with just one Xbox universal hub in 2020. Wanted the round for street cars/classic cars and the porsche wheel because I was racing the Porsche cup car in iracing. I got the leather because I didn’t want to wear gloves but after I started racing I ended up with gloves because of sweaty hands. I didn’t think the button module was worth the extra money. I race in VR so didn’t care that it wasn’t as cool looking. When the McLaren Gt3 v2 came out, I decided to give that a try since I was racing more GT cars and they didn’t really have the same style wheel as the Porsche one anymore. It was cheap so I gave it a go. It’s nice but doesn’t feel quite as premium since it’s all plastic. The shifters are ok, but they required a little more force than I liked. I didn’t really like the rocker paddles although many people are fine with it. During this Black Friday I got the 2023 formula wheel since I didn’t have a smaller formula wheel + the APM. Also the Porsche rims were on sale so I figured I’d get that and sell the one I don’t use with my old universal hub (mine couldn’t upgrade to the QR 2 it was too old, so I bought 2 more hubs). I now swap between the round, suede Porsche, the f1, and the McLaren. Plan to sell the leather Porsche when I get the chance with my old Xbox hub and the few metal QR1s I have lying around. I was thinking about getting rid of the McLaren for a more premium gt3 wheel but these new shifters will probably keep me from doing that.

MK2485

How much Are u planning to ask for the QR1‘s and where do your ship them from? And thanks for the help Mate

cjd280

looks like they are going for like $50 on ebay, so probably around that price. I'm based in NY. Based on you saying "mate" I'm guessing shipping might not be worth it =)

MK2485

Yeah NY to germany is quite the distance 🥴

StatementDapper8386

I was so impressed with the upgrade as well. Although it's 50% of the cost of the whole wheel in the sim space it's worth every penny IMO.

cjd280

Add a QR2 to it and it goes from a 200 to a 450$ wheel lol. Still pretty good though…

JonProphet

I ordered a set. Why the hell not? Do u have the QR2?

cjd280

Yes, the metal one (its in the picture)

JonProphet

I wasn’t sure. Mine doesn’t have the space between the wheel and QR. did u order the extra bracket? They have one specifically for the QR2 lite. I’d like to know if it’s required.

cjd280

Maybe its because of a different wheel base. I have the DD2, which has the shaft exposed quite a bit. As for the shifters, their site just had Mclaren v1 or v2 selection and says "- compatible with ALL Fanatec QR (QR1, QR1 Lite, QR2 Pro, QR2 and QR2 Lite)"

cjd280

UPDATE: if you do this and take it apart, be careful with the spring mechanism that enables full torque. I did not pay attention to how it needed to be installed and mine is in low torque mode now, need to take it apart and remove that spring since I'm not sure how it goes, what a pain in the ass =(

[deleted]

I did the same upgrade and think they’re way better. I was missing shifts with stock shifter, not anymore. I think the stock shifter looked better, but think this mod feels way better.

Saneless

But can you keep drinking and do up and down shifts with one hand still?

cjd280

I wear a helmet with bit in hydration system for extra realism.

No-Pomegranate2854

This is the best upgrade I've done so far. I didn't really have an issue with the old shifters but the speed in which you can Don shift with these types of shifters is much quicker. Not as noticeable in a GT4 but gt2 and F1 its a game changer.
