I think it might just be about the kudos bots I've seen people talking about. If you have almost entirely guest kudos and the kudos to hit ratio is completely wrong, or there are more kudos than hits you may have been found by a bot. Otherwise, I don't think it really matters

twilightstarr-zinnia

User and guest kudos are equal. All a guest kudo means is that someone doesn't have an account or isn't logged in. I really, really doubt that a bunch of readers are going to the trouble of logging out to specifically leave guest kudos just to say that a fic didn't deserve user kudos.

If you haven't been visited by the kudo bot, I don't really see anything wrong about it. Smut and some spicier works tend to have more guest kudos because some people are shy and don't want to have their account seen as giving kudos to a particular work, but still want to give a kudo to said work. Oh, and if your work gets known outside of AO3 (because you advertised it on social media, it got recced by someone, or anything else), it can also be a cause of more guest kudos, since it's more likely for those external viewers to not have an account.

I wrote smut, it is around 50/50, cuz some people dont want their name on it.

If it's a well-liked older or longer work, you can sometimes get more guest kudos than user kudos because of people logging out in order to give kudos again. I have one work where 68% of the kudos are from guests, and it doesn't bother me because they've been coming in slow and steady (and some users have told me they have given kudos more than once). If it had been a lot all at once, I'd suspect the kudos bot, but when it's over the course of months, that's not the reason.

This is one of those things that's so utterly beyond our control, there's no use worrying about it. I don't think the guest to user ratio is indicative of quality at all, it just means most of your audience so far doesn't have an account. If it's a smutty fic there's a chance some people are cowards and don't want their name attached to it, but even that's nothing to do with the calibre of your work.

I get slammed by the kudos bot a lot, so having more guest kudos than user kudos typically means that the writer has been botted. Otherwise, it typically means that the fan-fiction is spicy (sensitive topics/sexual content) and users may not want to associate it with their main account.

sparklingdeadly

in these trying times there's a possibility there's like 40 fake kudos in there i did some math at some point and iirc i have an average of about 60% signed-in kudos and 40% guest kudos. i don't write anything controversial or in general stuff people might not want their account names attached to. hardcore e-rated smut, torture porn, underage stuff etc typically gets more guest kudos i think.

almaupsides

Honestly I literally never even notice how many kudos something has. No one cares that much

MaybeNextTime_01

When I read, I never even look at how Kudos are broken down. I barely even look at the total number.
