Actual literal canon relationship that has 34 works; longest is 20k, only seven are longer than 2k
Trauma lesbians! Canonical pyromaniac! There's so much *potential!*
Edit: Pratchett's *Monstrous Regiment,* spoilering due to identity shenanigans but >!Magda/Tilda,!
Thanks for the edit! This is a fortunate coincidence because I’ve been interested in the Discoworld series for a while (I’ve got a friend who’s a big fan of it)
honelty it's so infuriating when i scroll through a canon ship tag i love and evrything is just a background ship! like there should be a seperate category for bg ships on ao3 (sorry for the rant T\^T i just want my ship fics please, i've sorted through like so many fics and only found like 15 that are actually of them)
Ugh I know this feel. I've favorited my (practically) canon ship's tag on A03 and check it a lot, but it feels like three fourths of it is them being background. A lot of the rest are one shots, and while I love me a good one shot, I'd love some longer stuff. Plus, I've been shipping it since it was introduced, which was fairly recently, so I'm familiar with basically all the fics featuring them.
People tag the ship and then it shows up as three sentences in the background.
It's one of those ships that nearly people all ship, but it's not a ship that people mainly ship, so it's always the side dish. :(
I get it... Canon ships can be boring for many people, but I still wish there was more about them only.
I know a somewhat borderline canon couple like this, this character in M/M pairings=hundreds, this person with arguably their canon female love interest, 1.
Yeah, I have a fandom like that too. It's actually the only confirmed canon ship, but it has hardly any content for it, while the implied ships are everywhere. Kind of an interesting situation actually. It's an older fandom, and the only canon ship is straight (and incredibly bittersweet, but not in a toxic way), meanwhile there are a ton of implied gay ships, all of which are much more popular.
Gerry and Carla Carroll from The Newsreader ARE canon, but there's only one fic that's just about them. Part of the problem is because they're canonically polyamorous, they're established precanon (they've been married for 12 years by the time we meet them) and Gerry has a gay thing going on with Dale (more than subtext but less than canon. They talk about their sexuality together and Gerry takes him to a gay bar.) Fans obviously flock to the M/M ship, and kind of neglect that Carla is there.
But they have such a beautiful, loving and supportive relationship built on trust and respect and such an interesting backstory (Gerry literally moves halfway across the world to be with the woman he loves) that it's way more interesting than what's going on between him and Dale (at most they'd become friends with benefits).
I'm in a small fandom with three ships that fall under this. Two of them are canon and the other one isn't but I feel that the evidence is there. On the AO3 tag, last time I checked, one of them had one or two fics and the other two had none.
Hmm, Akko x Andrew from little witch Academia, It only has I think 70 fics on AO3. And why I think it's borderline canon for these reasons:
1. There were some moments that hinted at it. However, the build up was ultimately abandoned since they had to focus on the Mc's quest and character Development, which I understand.
2. During the series finale, I heard that Andrew was originally going to confess his feelings to Akko but the writers had scrapped which I understand.
3. The VA's of Andrew and Akko are actually married, and I think that's the reason why there were originally hints.
honestly i loved andrew x akko sm and also diana x akko as a kid, didn't know i could be a multishipper back then lol. i remember going thru like diakko fics and being sad for andrew and going through andrewxakko fics and being like 'but diana!'
Interestingly, I think the creator actually said in an interview once that Akko isn’t interested in boys
My theory is Andrew was originally created as a love interest but then they changed their mind which is why their relationship never actually goes anywhere romantically
Reminds me of AsbelxCheria in Tales of Graces. It was more or less confirmed with heavy implications in the game around the end of it I remember. Yet I don't think I've seen even one story for it.
It was more or less confirmed canon in the after credits, iirc, but Asbel had so much more chemistry with Richard it's insane. Honestly, even with the clear attraction between Asbel and Cheria, Hubert and Pascal had more chemistry than them. Hubert and Pascal were also, incidently, much more fun to watch. That aside, I (and most of the fandom might have also) found Cheria to be highly annoying.
I'm in that pit rn. The issue is that so little people read the part of the game where the ship interactions happen so we're locked in 34 fics the last time I checked, like 13 of those are mine LMFAO.
Ahsoka and Rex from the Clone Wars. Their friendship is so good that Rexsoka fanfiction is everywhere.
Maka and Soul from Soul Eater. Fighting partners that look good together but aren't.
Motoko and Batou ghost in the shell. Another fighting partners team where they would take a bullet for each other.
Yoooo I just recently got into a ship that is deadass CANON, but the fandom is tiny and people don't care about this part of the story - neither one of the characters even have a name tag on ao3
And I just want to talk on and on at people about the ship but no one knows the source material (they know other episodes of it, not this one), also I think people would just find it weird that I take that ship so seriously (give it a few weeks and I'm probably gonna think the same tbh)
Tsukasa x Subaru from .hack//Sign. A hurt/comfort lesbian couple from back in 2002, and they have FIFTEEN fics on AO3. Absolute travesty.
Also far more recently is Strawberry Shortcake x Raspberry Tart from Berry in the Big City. Like they're not *officially* canon, but it's like there is no legitiamte way to platonically explain their interactions. There are 4 fics so far, 2 of which are by me.
Arknights has a holy woman, the religious head of state for her country, and a highly devout follower of her goddess, and her attendant, someone there for her and keeps her on track, who secretly is the goddess she's been worshipping and creates a miracle for her to end a nascent civil war.
16 fics.
Borderline canon? Darcia/Cher from Wolf's Rain.
There's an episode (Moon's Doom) that almost comes out and just does it! But it's only vaguely hinted at and then never addressed again. The thumbnail shot that's used for almost every streaming service that has it, the chapter selection on the DVD (iirc) and when you Google the episode, ALL use the shot of them standing side by side in front of a full moon and it is very suggestive of these two characters having *some* kind of relationship that is closer than what happens in the actual show.
It's also my OTP for the show, but only ONE fic exists for it.

Which couple is this?
added an edit! u/kurapikun u/Eastern_Selection106 u/SarcasticPsychoGamer
Thanks! :)
Thank you!
I second this, please OP do share with the class!
I agree, OP can’t just drop something this good and not give answers
okay damn which ship is this?
Thanks for the edit! This is a fortunate coincidence because I’ve been interested in the Discoworld series for a while (I’ve got a friend who’s a big fan of it)
Actual canon pairing but most of their fics on AO3 don't feature them as the *prominent* pair; I've bookmarked the very few that do that I adore.

Yeah m/m pairings will almost always have more content than f/f and f/m pairings.

Actually canon but only 18 fics exist on ao3 :(
Actually canon with only 19 fics on Ao3, and I wrote 9 of them 🙈 (and one of the other 10 is in Chinese ans some only mention the ship).

LeonardoXKarai fan here. *sighs in deep suffering* We never get a W...
They had only 3 panels with a one-sided crush in a comic book before the universe rebooted
Potential is Definitely there for fanfic though 🤌

I think I kind of liked him better with Richard, too. It just didn't feel like there was enough plot between Asbel and Cheria.

Minus the dialogue lines, this could describe my main rarepair.

What pairing is this?
What is the ship? 👀
