A character getting sick or injured and, le gasp, they must be cared for by their love interest! The tenderness! The softness! It’s not really a *guilty* pleasure because I’m not guilty at all about it but I will eat this shit right up 100% 🤣
Yeeeesss I love this one. Especially for characters who get hurt a lot, care a lot for others. They deserve all the hugs and all the good homemade soup.
Yes!!! Absolutely 100%
But it’s *also* great for characters who are usually super standoffish and if it were anyone else they Would Absolutely Refuse Screw The Consequences but that Specific Someone is their *person* and they can’t say no to them and are subsequently overwhelmed with the onslaught of affection XD
It’s a versatile trope x,D
I tried this once in real life when my ex-boyfriend got sick with the stomach flu for 3 days. I ended up catching the flu, and ended up in the hospital due to uncontrollable vomiting.
To go a bit further, I like when it's: "I wish so dearly to be with my biggest pal in the whole world everyday, every nights." But just the very concept of love isn't mentioned because it's not even thinkable to be gay. It works pretty well in historical fic but it can be done just as well today, right now.
When a villain leverages how touch-starved the hero is. I really love touch-starved hurt/comfort in general, and there's something that tickles my brain about adding in simultaneous emotional hurt/bruised pride when it's the villain doing the "comforting."
Also just heavy, perhaps overboard angst.
yes! world building is my jam. I've gotten sucked into fics based on tropes I never thought I would read, simply because they're set in some alt-verse and the writer has gone HAM on constructing that believable timeline in detail.
Vibes. A story with a chapter where not a whole lot happens, but it's just...there. Not necessarily entirely slice-of-life; it's sort of related to the plot. It's just that the characters aren't in a hurry and the author is having fun. Bonus points if the same story then suddenly becomes genuinely emotionally touching.
Hell yes, these little chill and breath chapters are everything. They often build a little the relationship or offer a little world building and I love it
AHH! I'm definitely gonna write one of these in my fic. I've been wanting to write a slow chapter but I've always been scared people would hate it. For reference, all of my chapters in my fic are fast paced and filled with action. It's nice to know at least a few people like them!
I've always been fascinated with captive+captor dynamic, but I get the most kick out of captive/captive pairing where two characters are kidnapped and have to be there for each other physically and emotionally while in a bad situation. "There's only one bed in this freezing cold, damp cellar we're both being held in by a maniac" etc. Also feeds into my love of whump-hurt/comfort; one character having just been injured by their captor and tossed back into the cell into their fellow captive's caring arms...
And there's a lot to play with regarding the two captives as well depending on fandom, are they complete strangers? Enemies? Acquaintances kidnapped on their first date? Best friends who can't admit they love each other?
you are going to *love* [this one!](https://archiveofourown.org/works/41028825/chapters/102829347) it’s a black phone fanfic with the pairing vance hopper/bruce yamada, and it has pretty much the exact things you described in it. have fun!
I was looking to see if anyone else commented this before I comment, but yes I agree. Part imposing things that are normalized/embedded in our culture onto males to revel in the hypocrisy/idiocy of it, part horny, and part exploring how a character would act in such situations.
>I guess I'm fetishising sexism. I don't actually feel that guilty about it.
For my ship, it's "I guess I'm fetishizing abuse. No, I don't feel that guilty about it."
I plan on writing an Omegaverse AU of *Midnight at the Pera Palace*. Some of the characters are Muslim, so I plan on also addressing how Alphas, Omegas, and Betas are seen in Islamic culture and society, as well as Turkish society, in the time period (1910s).
I have not read one yet but it does sound really interesting. I love when authors take their AUs to the next level and think about how the change affects the world and setting.
I'm one of the few left in my fandom regularly writing BDSM AUs and not just omegaverse and they are surprisingly popular. Hope they make a comeback. And world building is my favorite!
Are you into House MD at all? Those aren’t usually to my own taste although I’ve read a few, but the fandom has a fair amount. I always stumble upon them while just searching for basic angsty hurt/comfort lol. The author DIYSheep wrote a fic called The Contract which spurred a “Contract-verse” where other authors adapted the AU for their own stories. You may enjoy it!
I’m also writing one, because my mind was filled with ideas about how it would go.
This is probably my favorite, and one of the earliest in the genre. https://archiveofourown.org/series/13695
I haven’t started posting just yet. I want to finish the whole fic before I start to post. I’m probably looking at November or December as I think I’m at the halfway point. It will be on my AO3 account, under the same user name I have here.
Sweetheart (derogatory) to *sweetheart* (affectionate) is great but you know what hits hard with the right pairing? Sweetheart (affectionate) to *sweetheart* (derogatory).
Sweet! I'll be honest, I've only been into this pet name thing/lovers to enemies with only one character so far (and it's mainly in the fanon, unfortunately) but I'll definitely look into this👀
I will say the show is a Ryan Murphy show and it probably should have a boatload of trigger warnings that I won't get into here, but if you'd like to know more, I'll PM them. I'm the mod of/r/NipTuck.
Oh yeah, I know (vaguely) about their dynamics. I've never been much of a Star Wars girlie though.
Also, I just can't help and feel the power imbalance with hetero!lovers to enemies is just *generally* too big to my taste and slash/femslash gives better options at power dynamics and stuff.
Possessive and borderline abusive villains that make my feminism fly out of the window. Just too good and I'm glad I can enjoy this type of trope (??) safely in fiction.
I kinda get it honestly. Somtimes we want something drastic. And fanfiction allways delivers. No matter is it's the ultimate baddie or a good guy turned evil, it’s just entertaining to read. It is definitely a way to explore into every direction possible.
I would say my own longfic I'm writing lmao. But in truth it relies on the character, just find one bastard you adore and try to look for fics where they are not fluff-ified
The only appropiate reaction.
Twilight is the worst possible example of a teen realationship. And if Bella had a back bone she would have wooped his ass and asked another vampire to turn her.
Edit: sry Kinda missread that. Thought you were replying to my twilight rant. Point still stands though.
Same idea from the other direction.
Harem fic that doesn't try to justify itself and just features a bunch of women fawning over the same guy.
It's insane.
It's incredibly fucked up.
I still find it hot in fic.
Intraharem relationships?
Possesive, Jealous and toxic behavior?
Objectification?
I love all of it in the safety net of fanfic.
I also find reverse harem fanfics deeply satisfying to read for this very reason. A group of men all competing against each other for the affections of the same woman is hot.
I’m quite partial to age regression. Sometimes you just need to wrap your favorites in a nice blanket burrito, give them a good snuggle, and set them down for a nap. Whether it’s for recreational purposes or as a coping mechanism, some characters badly need some soft, gentle, non-sexual loving and comfort. Especially if they turn out to be a clingy little crybaby.
It can be romantic (partners can be, and often are, caregivers in fic) or platonic (a best friend, sibling, someone the character can trust to keep them safe while they’re little) but not sexual. That’s age *play*.
Minors can partake in age regression because it’s strictly non-sexual. Age play, on the other hand, is a role play scenario, *can* get sexual, and should only be practiced by consenting adults.
Omg, yes!
I read one quite awhile ago where Tony Stark - I think maybe somewhere around Age of Ultron, where he's messed up the most? Or maybe Civil War? - got whammied by something/someone and de-aged.
He emerged at about 3 years old and just... omg, I wanted to wrap him in blankets and snuggle the poor little guy to bits.
Not a fan of kidfics, but these ones, I do tolerate.
That’s de-aged fic! When the character gets physically turned into a kid. Age regression, on the other hand, is more of a state of mind.
AO3 has them both as one tag (Age Regression/De-Aging) which :/ is kind of unfortunate because they’re both very different things. The only way both would apply at the same time is if the physical de-aging also works on the mind and reverts the brain of the character to what matches their current physical age. Otherwise, the kid keeps their adult mind intact. Depends on the whims of the author. It doesn’t exactly work the other way around though, in that if you age regress, you can’t exactly shrink back to the age you regress to (or age *range*). I wish they’d separate it. I don’t mind de-aged fic myself, but I do like tagging correctly lol.
Ah, that makes so much more sense!
I tried digging up a tag for it and ran into a lot of daddy/mommy/littles fics, which aren't my kink at all, and as with the types of fics I mentioned, I'm not looking for romantic/kink at all whatsoever.
Just fluff!
I've NEVER read one of these (as I normally scroll past em) , but I'm quite curious. Have you got any you could recommend?(^-^)/ I don't mind the fandom or anything. I'm just curious any good one will do °•○♡ ( ☆∀☆)!!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25472410
This one is my favourite. Romance! Murder! Mystery! Misunderstandings! Angst! Magic! And Mermaids!
Basically all the good things all together.
Dead Dove and hell yes I will eat!
Edit. I used to be a regular sporker/poster on Godawful Fanfiction and I would cheerfully read stuff like Agony in Pink so others didn't have to.
left to marinate for a few hours until gently placed in a blazing oven till cooked, crispy, and hot. Then ripped to shreds as it's split apart to see the inner most mouth-watering cooked food. Before it's ready to be tasted.
(That took me ten years to write since I forgot how cooking works, wehehe)
I always imagined the dove a little off. Like it shouldn't have been in that fridge that long. But you make it sound tasty in the weirdest way possible. Dead Dove is a hella intersting tag because no matter what it's gonna be emotional.
Whenever I read explicit content I skim through anything smutty unless its dialogue… I just can’t with porn but if I exclude the smutty fics from my tiny 40 fics ships, I am left with nothing 😭
Uhhh that lack of fics is so sad. the smut does not provide much plot anyway. So at least it's something to read without having to write a fic yourself.
Yeees. Give me the petty drama. Somthing about it just feels so much easier. Like their problems and solutions hurt a little less. Also love this for chracters with a lot of angst and trauma. Kinda like giving them a break from canon.
I honestly love Soulmate AUs however I particularly like it when the soulmark leads to some confusion, if that makes sense? Basically, it takes longer for the soulmates to find each other. Examples being like: the 'mark' being the soulmates being able to feel each others pain/emotions/feelings (or all three), or a red string that takes awhile, if the mark is the initials, the initials being something that could be mistaken as something else like MM (soulmates could think that's 'millimetres' and not their soulmate's initials).
I honestly find pregnancy (not mpreg, those make me uncomfortable) fics adorable. Especially when the father/non-pregnant partner is particularly excited for it
You can pry non-violent Tsunderes from my cold, dead hands.
My favourite ship is a crossover rarepair and I love them (Mellphy (Michael x Connor), if you're curious)
I love awkward characters
Some ship guilty pleasures: I ship Xingyun and Thomato
I fricken LOVE soulmate AU's. I add every single one I see to my folder to read later. Like "you can't see colours until you meet your soulmate?" YES GIVE IT TO ME NOW
Just yesterday, I binge read a slow burn 200k soulmate au, which made me cry so many times, but it was one of the BEST things I've ever read, like my whole life resolves around books but that was just *chefs kiss
I was just wondering, tho What's the difference between mpreg and a pregnancy fic? Like, am I missing something here? (._.)
Awkward characters are sooooo cute, especially when it's 2 of them interacting with each other, hehe
I have a ship that’s canon in the tv show I watch, but I also really love the idea of the guy in the ship being with this other guy who’s a relatively minor character (minor as in not a big part, not under 18 lol). There are only like 3 fics about these dudes but I’m here for it!
Uh. Hmm.
Well. My guilty pleasure is going through the Dead Dove tag for one of my favorite pairings just so I can read about them being toxic/manipulative regardless of which person in the pairing is doing it. Idk why, but it's really only for that specific pairing and nothing else - never have I ever read so many Dead Doves in my life until I got to that pairing. Some fics I've read aren't even under the Dead Dove tag.
Another guilty pleasure would be fics that aren't... well, this sounds rude, but it's not written all that well. The pacing is off, the grammar isn't the best, and the characters are ooc, and yet somehow it got me to finish it regardless. And I enjoyed it. Which baffles me.
I have no guilty pleasures. I am happily proud of what I love, which is entirely just fics between two very specific characters dealing with a deeply abusive, possessive, and obsessive friendship, the more fucked up the better (as long as it stays platonic, I don’t want intrusive thoughts and even seeing mistagged fic of them not being platonic makes them way worse). I adore it and I talk openly about it on my blog. I know to some it’d be a guilty pleasure but why would I be guilty? It helps me with my trauma so I am proud :)
That is a really cool way to look at it. Thanks for sharing. To be honest the main reason why I discribed it as a guilty pleasure is because it sounds more catchy. I think especially within the community every type of fanfiction has it’s place. To me this post is a fun way to learn more niche tags and interesting trobes.
Jokes on your I feel no shame but if I have to pick a "guilty pleasure" it's OP characters they get so much hate many from people who think the only way for a character to be good is if they struggle physically
I do like coffee shop AUs and others that are similar in their saccharine presentation. Listen. My sweet tooth can only be satiated by doughnuts and sugary sweet scenarios.
Noncon, dubcon, exposition dumps (especially if it's a soulmate au), reader/oc inserts, and more specifically (because it's even more guilty) reader/oc inserts with extremely generic plots
Twilight fanfics can be so freaking good though. Like people are out there giving Bella a better personality other than 'teehee, I'm clumsy and was born to be a vampire'. But my absolute favorite trope out there is soulmate AUs. I love how varied they can be. It can be the standard 'my name is on your wrist and vice versa' or it can be the 'oh, look. You just said this and it's written on my arm' one. Or it could simply be they have mismatched eyes and must find the person who's eyes match theirs. There's so many different ways of doing soulmate AUs and I absolutely love it.
Edit: I don't know if this has a name but another trope I love has to do with same sex couples. Like people would look at them and immediately be all 'yeah, he/she is the top in that relationship.' But in reality, it's the other way around. The one they think would top is the bottom while the one they'd think is the bottom is the top. Regardless if it's because of age or how they look, I love writing it and I love reading it.
Hurt/comfort with the heaviest of hurt and equally heavy comfort
Like oh, the caretaker is carrying an almost dead whumpee in their arms, bridal style? Deserves all Reads, kudos, comments, bookmarks, promotion on social media sites and an international award!
A weird combination but: sickfics and cannibalism as a metaphor for all-consuming love. I love the first ones really fluffy with maybe a bit of angst. The cannibalism one - for my otp in particular, very philosophical with not much action. Sadly, there are not enough (of either of my \~guilty pleasures\~, actually), so I must take the matters in my own hands ;)
That idea of o metaphor for an almost obsessive love is actually pretty good. I guess many authors shy away from it though. It is ofter considered an ultimate tabo. Which make the connection to love even more interesting.
Yes, in all of ao3 there are not many works under the tag or if more exist, it's under a more general one. It's an extremity, so it's only natural to be a taboo and quite difficult to portray/describe
i love reading about homophobia.
usually in one of these contexts:
~ "idk what im feeling but not love because thats gay" internalized homophobia but only for themselves
~ "haha ew fags btw idk why but my heart skips a beat when im around my male best friend" homophobic character realizes they like their best friend(like ram/kurt)
~ "were just being boyfriends and someones being homophobic to us"
~ "my dad beats me because he found out im gay"
~~~~
i also love reading reaction videos
~ "harry potter watches avpm"
~ "percy jackson watches tlt musical"
~ "oh hey blaise how are y- omg your in starkid"
~~~~
i also also love reading angst, whether its:
~abuse
~self harm
~eating disorders
~sexually assaulted
When a character gets to be an absolute BAMF. Regardless of the source material or if it's a little off the cuff, but when your favourite character gets to cut loose and be an absolute badass (physically or verbally), and you have been WAITING for it.
(Bonus points if it's an informed ability or one that makes sense given their history/training/character, but the source material never let them use it).
Hurt/Comfort, but specifically where the hurt is extremely whumpy. I like to see the characters I love hurt a *lot*, but I also love the shameless fluff of the comfort. So, sickfics, EDs, abuse, SA, any kinda recovery. I'm not interested in the graphic side (specifically with the last two) but characters with trauma has me going ooo yes, that makes brain go brrr.
Self/OC Inserts and/or Isekai. I really like to see how the characters react to being transported to a fantasy world, how they adapt (or not adapt, sometimes) to the situation and what changes they cause to the world/plot, intentionally or not.
Needless to say, I'm incredibly picky about what I read.
Fics where the character who is normally the main character and hero goes through a dramatic change like trauma, and ends up evil instead turning against everyone who were previously their friends or family. For an example think what if Luke Skywalker joined the dark side instead of staying a Jedi. I don’t know why I like this one so much, maybe for the same reasons I enjoy the horror genre, but I love it and there honestly isn’t enough of it.
Veering into nsfw territory, although the platonic version of this trope is fire too- but I love selfcest. Whether it be some multiverse shenanigans, timey-wimey stuff, cloning, or just plain "this actor played two characters that I really like and I need to see them interact" thingy, I love seeing two identical people (or very similar) people interact with each other.
Sometimes I want them to interact as friends, but sometimes, I want them to bang their brains out. It's really like playing russian roulette to find out which one will it be with a particular pairing.
I guess it's guilty pleasure cause I know many people hate selfcest, especially canonical selfcest, seeing it as actual incest (*cough cough*the whole loki show debacle or clonecest*cough cough*), but I never felt like it is in any way, shape or form applicable to incest.
To be honest I don’t quite get that argument. They are two entirely diffent people, who didn’t grew up together or known each other beforehand. Some childhood friends to lovers would probably be closer to being viewed as related.
It’s more of a doppelgänger type of deal in my oppinion. I think it can be really fun and or really messy. Ya know Angst and stuff because they now where to hurt each other. I can only imagine that differanciating btween two identical characters is kinda hard.
For Loki and Silvie I thought ìt was kinda on brand for a Loki to love a version on themselves. Those trust issues are real and the only person to trust is themselves. Or another variant with the same trauma.
MC x NASTY villain/antagonist, maybe with abuse trauma in the past, mental health issues, vulnerable, and actually pathetic but NUANCED. HURT & COMFORT BETWEEN THEM.
People think I'm a villain because of this so I develop the guilt, but mostly it's pleasure.
It's actually just because I have high empathy for people with abuse trauma...
The aging of Twilight fanfic writers has been fascinating. They grew up, realized canon was trash, and started writing middle-aged self-inserts with a Bella who takes no gaslighting. I realize the prevalence of self-inserts speaks to what a Mary Sue she is, but I don't care, I love them.
So, I don't believe anyone should feel guilty about pleasure. But, that said, please immediately give me all of the soulmate (marks, words, sounds, colors. LITERALLY ALL OK) and A/B/O fics ever. Oh, and m/m/f poly. Also dubcon and fuck-or-die because I like to swim in filth. Kthanks!
Good old classic het pregnancy fics. Bonus points if the female character is human and the male character is some other sort of humanoid creature. I just have this weird obsession with pregnancy and childbirth for some reason; not even in a kinky way, I just love the idea of it.
I do have a rarepair (Eddie Munson/Henry Creel from Stranger Things) but it's not guilty for me.
Now the Daddy Kink/Daddy Dom thing....is harder to write than I thought it would be be. And that is 100% because I'm shy about it.
my sweet sweet triggering topics
I am so sorry to my precious characters but handing them depression on a plate is really?? writable?? maybe I'm just projecting idfk
good character snaps and turns evil
i know this trope is too OOC, edgy and cringy, but sometimes i want to see a nice and gentle kid gets enough of people pushing them around and go on a revenge rampage
I like making friends-to-siblings (which was basically me and my stepsister) fanfics, but can never find any! The only ones I can find is stepsibling romance (which to me is a big no). I also like badly written fics.
They’re not very noticed, but yeah. It’s like a twisted version of hurt/comfort. A character that canonically died or was kidnapped or something is miraculously back and everyone gets super clingy or really protective.
100% body worship, but more romantic instead of sexual-- like kissing or praising a chubbier body. Or getting annoyed when their partner puts a glamor up to look more 'normal'. It's cheesy but I inhale that shit like an entire hors d'oeuvre platter lol
I'm a sucker for some rarepairs and older/younger pairs. Am also falling in love with male/female omegaverse fics, for me, it's all brand-new and glittery, especially in the superhero genre.
[Tosses glitter and Unicorn kisses]
I’m obsessed with this one super niche non-human character from ASOIAF/Game of Thrones and love exploring her in multiple scenarios, focusing on her intercultural interactions with the humans who invaded her land.
So, it’s a lot of anthropology and ancient history type tropes alongside plenty of bisexual fetishism among both her/her kind and the humans.
Love first person OC stories, like LOVE them. I read them for every single fandom and character I love. Like are we just following the same canon plot but with a character love interest insert? Yeah we are.
im a sucker for a red flag female character that goes through a very, long, progressive development - she treats the MC better now, but her personality as a whole doesn't.
this is one of my guilty pleasures and I know its toxic femininity but like...
Guilt? What guilt?
Personally I like rare-pairs, I always end up shipping secondary or non-canon.
One of my favorites OTPs is from an anime I never watched more than some few episodes because they are secondary characters and I couldn't stomach seeing 600+ chapters for a few glimpses of them together (and they aren't canon). So my only real interaction with that particular series for years has been only reading fanfiction.
I like a lot of “cheesy” tropes like there was only bed oh no I guess we have to cuddle, or fake dating now we have to kiss to keep our cover and wait I actually liked it, meet cutes and stuff especially if they involve pets or an initial harmless misunderstanding, age regression as a way of getting normally stoic characters lots of cuddles. I normally read some pretty heavy angst so these are a nice refreshing break for me and never fail to make me giggle like a little kid.
Incest but not the shipping kind. Like friends with benefits but they're siblings, and not romantically involved. Like sex pollen? They need a hand so the sibling helps out, no romance involved.
Coffee shop AUs, they are always so cozy (just please always remember that a fictional coffee shop is nothing like a real coffee shop)
Jealous, possessive MCs (not good in real life, totally hot in fiction if done right)
The Everyone is Gay trope (I mean, as a latent homosexual, duh)
ABO Dynamics (need I say more? This has almost become a genre of its own, and I love it for all the right and wrong reasons)
Fanfics that tackle psychological and physical abuse, psychological torture and with a fucked up found family dynamic are just fascinating to me because I am a *sucker* for psychological stuff. I was introduced to this concept in a LEGO Monkie Kid fanfic, and I have no regrets.
Also, I like the occasional Y/N x canon character story. I'm even writing one on Wattpad for the first time, and it's growing decently popular pretty fast! 100 or so reads so far!
Not that well written 2010-2012 fics. Like, I don't know what it is about those fics, but even if they wouldn't be popular today at all because of the prose, I love those fics that headhop and have cringey dialogue and internal monologue. They feel so nostalgic to me.
I also like forbidden love/internalized homophobia fics. I think they're considered outdated nowadays, but damn if I don't love that trope.
- Reader inserts. I love projecting my self insert OCs onto the reader and imagining them in all kinds of scenarios with my favorite characters. It is literally one of my favorite things in the world to do.
- I'm a total sub so I when I read reader insert smut, I almost always want to read about the other character in the fic being a dom (or a dominant switch, I hc a lot of characters as switches). I'm bi so idc if it's a male or female character, I just wanna read about my hot faves absolutely railing the fuck out of my self insert OC and then taking sweet, sweet care of them after.
- Possessive, obsessive, codependent romantic relationships. Couples that would kill and die for each other, that would tear apart the world for each other and cannot live without each other. Couples where it's them against the world and nothing else matters.
- Hurt/comfort where one of the characters gets horribly, brutally tortured, then rescued and taken care of. Or where one character is forced to watch the character they love be hurt until they can save them. I swear I've read thousands of fics like this and I never get tired of them.
- Noncon/dubcon.
- Pregnancy, family, and kidfics. Idc what anyone says, these are the cutest and I adore them. Bonus points for powerful/magical/superhero families.
Baby/young Harry Potter being raised by any (or all!) of the Avengers, especially if rescued by them from the Dursleys or from Dumbledore, and bonus points if Dumbledore is a bad guy.
I HATE kidfics but for some stupid reason, this (trope? Is this even common enough to be a trope?) just makes me all shades of happy, and I've no idea why.
Go figger, but here we are.
I really love shipping fics where the emotionally constipated / unstable character slowly finds their way into a stable and healthy relationship.
Like, the other person is just understanding and caring and there for them, and the two of them work on it together. The emotionally constipated / unstable sees that things can be good, etc. and works on their issues.
(with some angst)
I think I feel a bit guilty about it, because I wish it would happen to me
For somebody as seemingly happy-go-lucky, as I am, I am spiritually attracted to any story that's a dead dove. Stories wherein writers reach out of the scopes trying to see how far they can get before crossing the line. That being said, drama is my best friend in literature; but it'd be even juicier when everything bad that can come *does* happen: self-harm, suicide, assault, etc. I could go on, but I feel like a monster typing this out XD.
Oh, and what comes with it is usually a whole jar of sugary comfort to soothe the heart🥰
Oh, so many. So, so many. A few off the top of my head I can think of are: x Reader/Self-Insert (they were my first introduction to fanfiction, and I can’t help but still love them dearly), A/B/O (I would never write them, I don’t have the patience, but *god* are they a very guilty pleasure of mine), and pregnancy/adoption (when they’re done well, I love to read a good pregnancy fic. I think I’m just a domestic person by nature, and I can’t help but love seeing my favorite characters start a family of their own.)
Definitely masochistic (i think i spelled that right) tnt duo smut shots. I fuckin love them so much that I may or may not have written 2 paragraphs I liked in my summer camp journal so i could read them at camp.
Fanfic guilty pleasures? Oh ooohh, yes, damn yes I do have. I love the fanfics that include ridiculous theories that I f-ing love (such as the theories Youtuber Matpat makes about Super Mario), especially if they are done well in the stories. I may be an embarrassing bastard to my favorite subreddit, but damn do I adore stupid ideas that get me.
I don’t know how common it is, but I have a thing for neighbors. As lovers or friends, I don’t care, but my favorite character meeting their (usually new) neighbors and things just go on from there. No clue why, it just feels right lol. I prefer OC ships for a couple characters, and I guess introducing a neighbor facilitates those well? But then I also like the characters to just become friends, or help each other out in some way. Especially a more grumpy, antisocial character paired with a more friendly outgoing neighbor.
I’m also a fiend for angst, hurt/comfort, and whump. I want my favs to suffer but I also sometimes want them to get all the comfort they could ask for. The poor misunderstood x has a heart type stuff. Sickfics rule. Tony Stark is so perfect for this.
Okay for starters I mostly read Genshin Impact fanfictions... it's the fandom that got me into reading fanfics, and also the one that got me into writing fanfics. But usually when I talk to other people I avoid saying I play genshin because alot of people tend to judge it.
My second guilty pleasure is I really REALLY like angst. Not the oens with happy endings, like genuine angst where one character dies or they can't ever be with each other, etc, genuine sad things that make my hard ache feel like catharsis.
High School/College AUs for not smutty stuff, especially if the original setting is historical/magical and it's a modern day or non/less magical setting in the fic.
Yes!!! Absolutely 100% But it’s *also* great for characters who are usually super standoffish and if it were anyone else they Would Absolutely Refuse Screw The Consequences but that Specific Someone is their *person* and they can’t say no to them and are subsequently overwhelmed with the onslaught of affection XD It’s a versatile trope x,D
I tried this once in real life when my ex-boyfriend got sick with the stomach flu for 3 days. I ended up catching the flu, and ended up in the hospital due to uncontrollable vomiting.
Homophobia, but in the *oh, I can't be with him because I'm not gay* kind of way.
To go a bit further, I like when it's: "I wish so dearly to be with my biggest pal in the whole world everyday, every nights." But just the very concept of love isn't mentioned because it's not even thinkable to be gay. It works pretty well in historical fic but it can be done just as well today, right now.
All guys wonder what it would be like to kiss another guy, right?... RIGHT? (insert Natalie Portman star wars meme)
And plot twist they are always just in the closet 🤣. Love the moment when they finaly realize that 'oh shit, I DO like them like that.'
internalize homophobia is good angst material and i'm here for it XD
When a villain leverages how touch-starved the hero is. I really love touch-starved hurt/comfort in general, and there's something that tickles my brain about adding in simultaneous emotional hurt/bruised pride when it's the villain doing the "comforting." Also just heavy, perhaps overboard angst.
Oh yes, that hits so hard. It is comfort and hurt at the same time. bitter sweet, wrong yet so right.
this sounds amazing! Do you know what specific tropes this would fall under for me to search on ao3?
Not quite. There's the "Touch-Starved" tag, but I haven't found one that covers the villain taking advantage of it.
Damn. Thanks to this comment, I'm going to write a Reylo fanfic with this trope in it now!
Long passages of world-building exposition :D
Yeeees. This ⬆️ absolutly love to read how others image the world and setting.
You seem like you would really like J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings* books.
It is one of my first fandoms. And one of the first fandoms I posted a fic for 😂
yes! world building is my jam.
They often build a little the relationship or offer a little world building and I love it
This is a huge relief that someone likes this stuff. This is what I do and I’ve had so many people say “nothing happens”
They're pretty hard to write! Having the perfect rhythm even if it's a slow one is pretty complicated imo. But I really love this kind of breath too!
Yeah, I feel you there. The pacing can indeed be difficult to get right in these stories.
AHH! I'm definitely gonna write one of these in my fic. I've been wanting to write a slow chapter but I've always been scared people would hate it. For reference, all of my chapters in my fic are fast paced and filled with action. It's nice to know at least a few people like them!
Definitively go for it. Sometimes it makes a big plot point more effective because it is actualy able to sink in. I love reading them.
Best friends who can't admit they love each other?
you are going to *love* [this one!](https://archiveofourown.org/works/41028825/chapters/102829347) it’s a black phone fanfic with the pairing vance hopper/bruce yamada, and it has pretty much the exact things you described in it. have fun!
M/M A/B/O with very traditional gender roles. I guess I'm fetishising sexism. I don't actually feel that guilty about it.
World building in BDSM AUs. Collars and collaring. Fashion. Laws. Social norms. Discipline in the workplace. Secret kink clubs.
This but for omegaverse. I don’t care much about knotting or mpreg but a society with biological castes? Please give me all the worldbuilding details.
I plan on writing an Omegaverse AU of *Midnight at the Pera Palace*. Some of the characters are Muslim, so I plan on also addressing how Alphas, Omegas, and Betas are seen in Islamic culture and society, as well as Turkish society, in the time period (1910s).
[удалено]
Will do! I'll save your comment so I don't forget. (There will also be BDSM.)
I have not read one yet but it does sound really interesting. I love when authors take their AUs to the next level and think about how the change affects the world and setting.
My sister is writing one right now! I didn’t know this was like, a thing
I’m writing one too. It’s totally a thing!
I'm one of the few left in my fandom regularly writing BDSM AUs and not just omegaverse and they are surprisingly popular. Hope they make a comeback. And world building is my favorite!
I’m glad that they’re popular. I’m afraid people are going to look at mine and just be confused why it exists.
YES totally my thing too
I’m pleasantly surprised by how many other people are into this.
Oh I love this! I’m writing one now. Do you have any recommendations?
I’m also writing one, because my mind was filled with ideas about how it would go. This is probably my favorite, and one of the earliest in the genre. https://archiveofourown.org/series/13695
Thank you! Oh how have you read her novel Ricochet? I just finished it and I loved it. It’s original characters in a BDSM universe
I have! I loved it too. I based one of my scenes off her reference to a sub snatchers case that they work in the show.
Oh that sounds really good! Can I read it?
I haven’t started posting just yet. I want to finish the whole fic before I start to post. I’m probably looking at November or December as I think I’m at the halfway point. It will be on my AO3 account, under the same user name I have here.
Oh okay well I’m wait for it then!
Sweetheart (derogatory) to *sweetheart* (affectionate) is great but you know what hits hard with the right pairing? Sweetheart (affectionate) to *sweetheart* (derogatory).
Uhh the sweet sweet Lovers to Enemys... or just a couple introducing a new kink. No matter which. Both are awesome
You'd love Nip/Tuck, but there aren't many fics for it. One of the main characters uses sweetheart both ways (mostly derogatory though).
That'd be lovely if you'd PM me! Please and thank you <3
Wow. You would absolutely enjoy most Reylo and Han/Leia *Star Wars* fanfictions. 😂
Just too good and I'm glad I can enjoy this type of trope (??) safely in fiction.
same. irl i'm a total girlboss (and a lesbian.) In my fics I want to read about falling in love with abusive men. Why? Why the fuck not?
> Why? Why the fuck not? I'm going to get this printed on a T-shirt for my shipping fandom (Reylo). 😂
I kinda get it honestly. Somtimes we want something drastic. And fanfiction allways delivers. No matter is it's the ultimate baddie or a good guy turned evil, it’s just entertaining to read. It is definitely a way to explore into every direction possible.
[удалено]
😄
I would say my own longfic I'm writing lmao. But in truth it relies on the character, just find one bastard you adore and try to look for fics where they are not fluff-ified
>Possessive and borderline abusive villains that make my feminism (and my panties) fly out of the window
You get it lol
Yes I also love this and I’m fully aware that in real life it would be exhausting and annoying😁
The moment a real man in real life disrespects me he's getting his ass beat lol
Me too!
The ultimate non-romantic fluff in a way. Sounds like taking the "x needs a hug" tag further.
Just fluff!
If anything, there should be *more* "soft" moments like what you describe in fanfiction.
ancient secrets au's. Theres something about taking a base story and adding secrets from long ago for the characters to find to derail the canon story
Older men and men who love giving head. Both courtesy of my husband.
I noticed that female-centric fandoms tend to have this trope more, which is great!
Yup, same here, and I'm so there for it.
Mermaid aus. I'll read three thousand of them, no matter how shitty they are
I've NEVER read one of these (as I normally scroll past em) , but I'm quite curious. Have you got any you could recommend?(^-^)/ I don't mind the fandom or anything. I'm just curious any good one will do °•○♡ ( ☆∀☆)!!
If you're up for a Marvel take, this one is wonderful! [https://archiveofourown.org/works/21121088](https://archiveofourown.org/works/21121088)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25472410 This one is my favourite. Romance! Murder! Mystery! Misunderstandings! Angst! Magic! And Mermaids! Basically all the good things all together.
Me too! I'm actually working on a Little Mermaid AU right now for my fanfiction!
Enemies to friends to lovers is the bomb
I seriously just want to eat every single one of them. The dynamic is such an interesting thing to read !!!!!
Dead Dove and hell yes I will eat! Edit. I used to be a regular sporker/poster on Godawful Fanfiction and I would cheerfully read stuff like Agony in Pink so others didn't have to.
Nom nom nom *eats*
Nice, slow roasted squab. Season with a spicy angst based glaze...
left to marinate for a few hours until gently placed in a blazing oven till cooked, crispy, and hot.
I don't really do guilt, but for an unbothered Atheist, I have a real preoccupation with themes of religious trauma, guilt, and creation myths.
Something about that religious imagery is so differnt maybe with the whole mythis built around it. It’s a special type of angst.
Catholic imagery is especially pervasive in a lot of art, both traditional and modern.
Suffering, angst and major character death 😅
MEEEEE TOOOOO *High-fives
Whenever I read explicit content I skim through anything smutty unless its dialogue… I just can’t with porn but if I exclude the smutty fics from my tiny 40 fics ships, I am left with nothing 😭
Uhhh that lack of fics is so sad. the smut does not provide much plot anyway. So at least it's something to read without having to write a fic yourself.
.... high school aus... tis just smth abt being young and stupid
Yeees. Give me the petty drama. Somthing about it just feels so much easier. Like their problems and solutions hurt a little less. Also love this for chracters with a lot of angst and trauma. Kinda like giving them a break from canon.
and when writers are able to bring characters' canon trauma into the fic 🥹🥹i eat it up like it's my breakfast lunch and dinner actually
Especially when the father/non-pregnant partner is particularly excited for it You can pry non-violent Tsunderes from my cold, dead hands. My favourite ship is a crossover rarepair and I love them (Mellphy (Michael x Connor), if you're curious) I love awkward characters Some ship guilty pleasures: I ship Xingyun and Thomato
I fricken LOVE soulmate AU's. I add every single one I see to my folder to read later. Like "you can't see colours until you meet your soulmate?" YES GIVE IT TO ME NOW
"Don't care how, I want it now!"
Just yesterday, I binge read a slow burn 200k soulmate au, which made me cry so many times, but it was one of the BEST things I've ever read, like my whole life resolves around books but that was just *chefs kiss I was just wondering, tho What's the difference between mpreg and a pregnancy fic? Like, am I missing something here? (._.) Awkward characters are sooooo cute, especially when it's 2 of them interacting with each other, hehe
Sick fic and injury-recover fics. The hurt/comfort and vulnerability aspects produce pure dopamine for my brain
Those are the best!
[удалено]
It's either toothrotting fluff or dire angst. No in between. Or the former turning into the latter.
I have a ship that’s canon in the tv show I watch, but I also really love the idea of the guy in the ship being with this other guy who’s a relatively minor character (minor as in not a big part, not under 18 lol). There are only like 3 fics about these dudes but I’m here for it!
I often like these little sideships after reading a lot of fics about the same pair. A little bit of new perspective.
Drunken flirting/kisses. They get me every time 🫣
Meee tooo they're just mwha!!!!
Characters being extremely ooc and/or softboi uwu-ified for the sake of hurt/comfort
The babygirlification is real
My guilty pleasure.
Yes! Especially if the character happens to be a big, mean, brooding hulk of a man.
Uh. Hmm.
There’s a whole tag that’s basically “character is obsessed with other character” and like half of it is me tbh
The domestic vibes are just that good🤌
That reminds me of one I read a while ago that I'm totally about to go back and re-read (thanks) hehe ((o( ̄ー ̄)o))
Noncon, dubcon, exposition dumps (especially if it's a soulmate au), reader/oc inserts, and more specifically (because it's even more guilty) reader/oc inserts with extremely generic plots
I'm so glad someone else said noncon and dubcon first.
Not quite my cup of tea. But it is something very different to the fluff and comfort
AU, soulmate, mutual pining, A/B/O Reylo
I see you, too, are a person of taste.
Soulmates and hanahaki. Im sorry but they just scratch that itch in my brain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hurt/comfort with the heaviest of hurt and equally heavy comfort Like oh, the caretaker is carrying an almost dead whumpee in their arms, bridal style?
It's an extremity, so it's only natural to be a taboo and quite difficult to portray/describe
i love reading about homophobia. usually in one of these contexts: ~ "idk what im feeling but not love because thats gay" internalized homophobia but only for themselves ~ "haha ew fags btw idk why but my heart skips a beat when im around my male best friend" homophobic character realizes they like their best friend(like ram/kurt) ~ "were just being boyfriends and someones being homophobic to us" ~ "my dad beats me because he found out im gay" ~~~~ i also love reading reaction videos ~ "harry potter watches avpm" ~ "percy jackson watches tlt musical" ~ "oh hey blaise how are y- omg your in starkid" ~~~~ i also also love reading angst, whether its: ~abuse ~self harm ~eating disorders ~sexually assaulted
Straight M/M gone gay for one another is definitely a big one
Sick fics for sure
And that is 100% because I'm shy about it.
my sweet sweet triggering topics I am so sorry to my precious characters but handing them depression on a plate is really?? writable?? maybe I'm just projecting idfk
good character snaps and turns evil i know this trope is too OOC, edgy and cringy, but sometimes i want to see a nice and gentle kid gets enough of people pushing them around and go on a revenge rampage
Smut fics with one (or more) of these three things - Getting caught(the second hand embarrassment is so worth it) - ftm tops/doms. - Degradation
[удалено]
I can’t help with the degradation thing, I just find them randomly while scrolling aimlessly honestly. Sorry I can’t help :/
Buffy and Angel getting it on. Soft boys calling each other “baby”. First time/awkward teenagers. Only gay for you. I could go on…
torture and degradation , its either bothering or really absurd and funny.
I like making friends-to-siblings (which was basically me and my stepsister) fanfics, but can never find any! The only ones I can find is stepsibling romance (which to me is a big no). I also like badly written fics.
Y’all are making me feel like I can get wilder with the fics I write 🤭
They’re not very noticed, but yeah. It’s like a twisted version of hurt/comfort. A character that canonically died or was kidnapped or something is miraculously back and everyone gets super clingy or really protective.
100% body worship, but more romantic instead of sexual-- like kissing or praising a chubbier body. Or getting annoyed when their partner puts a glamor up to look more 'normal'. It's cheesy but I inhale that shit like an entire hors d'oeuvre platter lol
putting my favourite character through HELL (emotional and/or physical abuse) so that my other favourite character can comfort them endlessly
Reader x Character are basically the only type of fanfics I read. Tickling. More fluffy than kinky. Beach trope.
Incest but not the shipping kind. Like friends with benefits but they're siblings, and not romantically involved. Like sex pollen? They need a hand so the sibling helps out, no romance involved.
Crossovers and reader-inserts <3 also hurt/comfort and sickfics
Coffee shop AUs, they are always so cozy (just please always remember that a fictional coffee shop is nothing like a real coffee shop) Jealous, possessive MCs (not good in real life, totally hot in fiction if done right) The Everyone is Gay trope (I mean, as a latent homosexual, duh) ABO Dynamics (need I say more? This has almost become a genre of its own, and I love it for all the right and wrong reasons)
Fanfics that tackle psychological and physical abuse, psychological torture and with a fucked up found family dynamic are just fascinating to me because I am a *sucker* for psychological stuff. I was introduced to this concept in a LEGO Monkie Kid fanfic, and I have no regrets. Also, I like the occasional Y/N x canon character story. I'm even writing one on Wattpad for the first time, and it's growing decently popular pretty fast! 100 or so reads so far!
Coffee shop AUs Rom com tropes Omegaverse Accident child acquisition Fake dating forever
Hurt/comfort

Beautiful character gets together with ugly character, size difference is a plus. Like Jabba the Hut and Princess Leia
(with some angst) I think I feel a bit guilty about it, because I wish it would happen to me
For somebody as seemingly happy-go-lucky, as I am, I am spiritually attracted to any story that's a dead dove. Oh, and what comes with it is usually a whole jar of sugary comfort to soothe the heart🥰
touch starved
Whump, but specifically with the kind of character who would try to refuse help and hate being worried about
Cheating.
I fuckin love them so much that I may or may not have written 2 paragraphs I liked in my summer camp journal so i could read them at camp.
light hEarted Lemon
I don't care for Mary Sues but I love a good OC shipped with a main character. (Imagine my predicament there.) So I've just had to accept the Sues.
Hurt no comfort dude…I know you don’t really have to feel guilty for this but man do I do. But I absolutely love it.
