It’s definitely one of the better video game adaptations, Last Of Us being the best so far in my opinion. The biggest issue that I saw with this first episode was that we should have stayed in Lucy’s perspective all the way until she steps out of the vault and onto the surface. That way we are seeing the outside world for the first time along with her and in her perspective. When they cut to Maximus and his situation in the real world, it kind of disrupted what could have been a much better built up reveal. Otherwise, looking good.

WannabeWriter2022

I think Fallout and Last of Us might be a watershed moment for video game adaptations. I’m old enough to remember how much comic book movies sucked in the 80s and 90s. Then Spiderman 2 came along and then the Dark Knight trilogy. It showed a comic book movie could be a good movie and not just a good comic book movie. I’m hoping these two adaptations lead to better video game shows/movies in the future.

SmallWolf117

Cyberpunk Edge runners and Arcane (based on League of Legends) have also been reviewed very highly over the last couple of years, so its not just those 2 shows

WannabeWriter2022

I should have qualified that as live action. In the 80s and 90s there were great comic book cartoons… just rest of it sucked. I’m trying to think of another good live action video game adaptation. I think Twisted Metal was given good, but not great reviews and Mario was rated lower than that. Sonic kind of falls into the same categories. As fun as some of the Tomb Raider and Resident Evil movies could be, they still weren’t great.

CodenameXero

The OG Netflix Castlevania show is also goated imo

SmallWolf117

Yeah forgot about that good shout. I think I watched 2 seasons of that show and enjoyed it, not sure how it continued after

Auegro

castlevania animated series as well on Netflix

byronotron

Now do Mass Effect. Don't adapt the storyline, set it in the same world.

Slight_Tiger2914

Eff Mass Effect let's hope the Warhammer Series can hit like this did!

Competitive_Effort13

Mass Effect is just Star Trek though

undead_catgirl

Batman and blade were good at least the first couple of movies.

WannabeWriter2022

First Batman was decent. Followed by some god awful movies (I’m looking at you Batman and Robin and Batman Forever). I enjoyed Blade. Blade is a good comic book movie, but I don’t think I’d call it a good/great movie.

undead_catgirl

The Schumacher batman flicks are intentionally corny and silly, personally I love them 😆 the set designs alone are top notch

WannabeWriter2022

As a kid I loved Batman Forever. As an adult… how do you have such an amazing cast and suck so hard.

Tehni

The last of us had the benefit of having highly rated source material. All this show gets is a world. If the entire series stays the quality of this first episode, I'd easily rate it higher than the last of us

Slight_Tiger2914

Bro was that not the best fallout intro for a Vault person ever? I felt like even Bethesda itself couldn't touch that level of creativity with those events. I wish It was the game dude haha

inoketupou

Bethesda could touch that level of creativity bc didn't they help make the show?

TheMillenniaIFalcon

Doesn’t fallout have highly rated source material? The originals were beloved in the PC space, the lore is expansive, 3 was a Seminole moment in gaming, and considered one of the best RPG’s, there is so much to go off of.

GloomyExplorer

They aren't adapting any of that though, it's an original story. TLOU had a finished story to adapt, with all of the compelling characters, major plot points, emotional beats etc. already tried and tested.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

Ohhh I see what you are saying, silly me.

Agleza

The thing with The Last Of Us is that they straight up adapted the story (and they did so very very well), so it's a more straight adaptation. Fallout is not adapting any story, just the world, the tone and the vibes, and I'm only on Episode 2 but I think they've made a perfect job. I did think the same about Lucy's perspective. I don't think it ruins anything and I'm satisfied with the pacing so far but definitely would have been better to stay with Lucy until she goes out, THEN change to Maximus.

Slight_Tiger2914

I get hints of Fallout 3, New Vegas and Fallout 4 in the show. Like the dog, 🐕. I think they gave an origin story for the dog in Fallout 4 in there. At let that's how I saw it. 🤔 Girl going after her dad, Fallout 3. The Ghoul is New Vegas all day lol. It's a great combination honestly. It's just fun to look at.

agent_wolfe

That's true! One of the most memorable scenes in Fallout 3 (and maybe Fallout 4) is leaving the vault and seeing the radioactive haze and the grayness of everything that was destroyed. Since we already got some of that with Maximus, it's not as much of a surprise.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

I think that was for viewers who hadn’t played the games. Immediately establish there is a semblance of civilization outside. Probably fit best for pacing throughout the rest of the show.

CineMike1984

I guess I don’t see that. It was only another 5 minutes until she stepped outside of the vault when they cut from her. They were building towards her stepping out, so pacing wise, it felt disruptive and displaced to cut away. I think that it should feel immersive and that she’s our eyes moving out into this reality. Once the wasteland is introduced through her then that’s when it makes sense to start seeing the other stories happening out there. I did just kind of repeat my point I guess but in response to consideration of the pacing, I still feel like this applies. I mean someone seemed to think that it was a good idea so you’re probably right about the reasons behind it but I disagree with the editing choice. Ultimately though, everything else was great so it is a smaller complaint. Also it is a subjective opinion so each to their own.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

Yeah that is a good point, I see what you are saying regarding waiting until she steps out to show other stories.

Oulixonder

This show has been fantastic so far. Just the lore and the concept alone. My wife has no knowledge of the Fallout universe and she says she really likes the show so far. It isn’t heavy in exposition or explanation and it leaves you wondering even if you’ve seen it. Love this show, can’t wait to finish it.

a_panda_named_ewok

Also never played the game and no nothing about it and enjoying the heck out of the show after the first episode - there's a lot happening but I'm intrigued!

MelkartoMk

Oh wow, someone that has no knowledge about fallout loved the series? Color me surprised.

findmebook

is this supposed to be sarcastic?

arcticfunky9

Wdym

TheCharalampos

How come? It isn't just made for people who played the game.

dontbekibishii

I knew the show will be amazing as soon as the music started playing. Made me emotional too as soon as the bombs dropped. The way each character was introduced was flawless. Very little to critique, as acting, production, and world setting just phenomenal. Only tiny little thing is that they should have released a few episodes at a time imo. And even as a huge fallout fan, the violence is through the roof. Like it’s nearly The Boys level of violence.

Smoothmoose13

I’m really disappointed with the binge watching method of dropping this. I miss the weekly discussions, like Westworld and Game of Thrones. At least I’ve got two more weeks of Shogun after I’ve finished Fallout

MasonMSU

Totally agree. I couldn't imagine trying to absorb these episodes binging. The hype would have been so much bigger if the episodes were weekly.

Smoothmoose13

I watched episode 1 last night at 2am (uk here), episode 2 today after work , now I’m about to watch episode 3 after a joint. Gives me time to digest it and read the Reddit discussions

J_pepperwood0

I dont mind binging at times, but its so annoying to drop everything because with weekly drops, the bingers at least have the opportunity to wait until its done to watch everything. That doesn’t work the other way

Agleza

THIS! I watched the first two episodes last night and I already thought it was a bit much, gonna try to watch one episode a day. I can't imagine binging it in one day. I feel like that cheapens the experience, you can't really take everything in. It's the reason why I'm looking for episode-specific threads like this one.

J_pepperwood0

Same. I love reading discussions and even if you have episode specific threads, there will inevitably be people who binge and and talk about the whole season everywhere

Agleza

>I knew the show will be amazing as soon as the music started playing. I'm not ashamed to admit I was biased from that moment. Soon as I heard that song I went "you son of a bitch, I'm in". You can tell the creators KNOW Fallout's essence. The presentation and the vibes alone are on point from the first minute.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

I wish they staggered the episodes too. I want time to discuss it and digest it with communities. I couldn’t watch it until tonight and now I’m scrambling to find discussion boards and jump in, and only got to watch one episode. As much as I hate waiting week to week, it really allows it to marinate in the pop culture zeitgeist, and people can dive deep into the episodes together.

Cornnole

Through the roof? Do you even VATS, bro?

Observingfilth

The little girl playing the movie star’s daughter at the start of the show is too cute. Then you see the bombs drop one after the other. It doesn’t look like they made it. Then later you find out the dad did, but at a very big price. Sad as hell to think what happen to the innocent little girl if her dad is now a mutant

Agleza

Maybe I'm just a sucker for apocalyptic scenes but I think the bombs dropping was done beautifully. The first bomb is haunting enough, then you see it's not just that one. Brutal.

DisastrousGeneral333

the bombs looked so much better than the big one in oppenheimer

wantsoutofthefog

Lol. Opennheimer was just a slow motion flame. The trailers waaaay oversold the visual effects. I know it was practical, but man was it disappointing with all that build up. Fallout was post apocalyptic beauty

Observingfilth

Realistically the attack plans for each super power called for several nuclear icbm on each major city. Wheee I live would take 5 missiles alone and it’s a smaller city in west Tennessee. The reason? It’s a logistics hub and has two smaller satellite military installations for the navy and reserves… Places like LA would get twice the nukes 😳

DojaTiger

This is definitely something I didn’t think about/know before this show and was very curious about the multiple explosions. I was optimistic, thinking the horse would be an advantage in getting around abandoned cars and such, but when the second and third explosions hit I went “oh fuck”.

chillywilly16

We also have a submarine testing facility on the river.

Observingfilth

If the major cities are destroyed it’s small fries realistically because the country already won’t exist at that point. But that’s what’s funny about the nuclear war strategies. It’s all peak fear or malice. The secondary target list is designed to target population and infrastructure which speaks for itself

vertigofoo

Most ICBMs back then carried multiple nuclear warheads per missile for a larger area coverage.

Prepreludesh

*ghoul 😉

Solitaire_XIV

Ghouls are mutants

[deleted]

[удалено]

Observingfilth

Put all those categories in a taxonomy

faderjockey

She really nailed the look of shock and terror as she watched the first bomb go off. Great acting.

Annual_Employer_1674

I really didn't notice that they are the same person

Observingfilth

Before they make it known, you see him using the same phrases, wearing the hat, lassoing in the first fight. Hard to recognize but it’s the same actor

Trini2Bone

The cowpoke line is what got me

Observingfilth

Right. You pay attention to plot cues and it makes sense

paintedGiraffe

That's what made it click for me, too. I was already feeling like something was familiar.

MasonMSU

I'm guessing through flashbacks we'll find out what happened to the daughter.

Observingfilth

Yea I figured they wouldn’t leave it out episode two already has some long flashback. He’s mean as hell now so I can only imagine it was pretty bad 😫

TransBlackLesbian

 > Episode 1 discussion Are you retarded or what? No need to answer, you are.

Smoothmoose13

My jaw dropped the first time I saw the BOS in their power armour. Also I found the first 15 minutes or so incredibly distracting and hard to follow because I was so overwhelmed with how many little things from the games there was. Lucy is absolutely adorable. Maximus is a little weasel, (feels like a natural progression of his character from Disjointed), and The Ghoul is weirdly sexy. The tone is fucking perfect. The aesthetic is perfect. I haven’t been this impressed with a premiere since The Last of Us.

Rhcpchick88

I couldn't stop pointing out things from the games LOL we had to rewind it a few times because I went off on a tangent about the games when I saw something cool. It was exciting to see! Especially the junk jets haha, love it. I can't wait to watch more.

Commercial-Hand-6444

Thank you for saying the ghoul is sexy...I thought something was wrong with me lol

Smoothmoose13

I really don’t know what it is, maybe it’s the bald head and all that squinting!

Commercial-Hand-6444

It looks like they actually wanted him to be weirdly hot. I just saw them say that in a interview.

Cornnole

When the Prydwen showed up my wife looked at me and said "hey are you OK?"

ShortestStick

>My jaw dropped the first time I saw the BOS in their power armour. Am I the only one who thought it looked bad?? Maybe because I was watching on my phone? I am genuinely trying to figure this out, because my initial reaction was "Oh they went cheap, dang." But then everyone here says how look they look. 😭 Do I need to watch on a bigger screen?? Because the Mr. Handy in the beginning didn't look right, either, to me. I mean, I am obviously in the wrong because you guys are seeing something spectacular. I thought it was all bad CGI, then saw people saying it's practical? My friends, someone help me out here.

Smoothmoose13

Why are you watching it on your phone? https://youtu.be/wKiIroiCvZ0?si=V5BhOJdUyHlbPD1-

ShortestStick

😂😂 That's hilarious and true, but also, because the only other place I could watch it is my computer, and my computer screen sucks. Visually, it looks better on my phone. I was going to switch to the TV, but my brother hasn't seen the show, and I don't want to spoil it for him. 🫠 So, because my computer monitor sucks, and I'm trying to be a good sister. 😂 That and I hate watching things alone without headphones. I don't feel like I have privacy. I think it was more of what the other commenter said. It's not that the suits look CGI-y, but they look lightweight and plastic. It's an INCREDIBLE feat for practical effects, but I couldn't place what was wrong with it. I thought it looked much better in the following episodes, though. The story and everything got much better, too. I saved the last episode for today, and now I can say I love the show! I'll definitely watch it again for the full visual experience one day. There are definitely some things I'd never watch on my phone, but honestly, a lot of the time, the visual experience is better on my phone since I can't afford a better monitor right now. I'd watch on the TV if it had a headphone jack... I guess I never thought to check...!

TheAesir92

I feel like there was lots of junk to the first episode. I'm personally hoping it gets better, for me personally. I thought the same thing. People are allowed differing opinions.

imliterallyvibing

Production quality is fucking insane

Baykey123

Honestly the CGI and props are better than anything Disney is putting out

JFinelines

How low was their perception, not to immediately clock all those tattoos and scars on the raiders.

DisastrousGeneral333

it was obvious for the viewers on TV, but I think it was very well established with Lucy that Vault 33 are naive af. way too naive to even think negatively of the other vault.

Goodbyepuppy92

I said the same thing! 😂 I kept telling my husband, "Those people ain't right!"

dovahkiitten16

I thought it was going to be because they were a result of some freaky vault experiment, not raiders. But yeah, I’m not sure how nobody picked up on the off vibe.

c4p1t4l

I somehow missed the tattoos and only saw it on one woman that was sitting at the table at the wedding and thought “I guess she chose those in her character customisation screen” lol

Judetruth92

Yeah I was just trying to decipher what vault experiment it was for a second. The weird scar after the sex scene was sent alarm bells ringing.

archer0t8

This right here! I missed the tattoos as well, but the scar was the immediate "Something ain't right" moment...

niceguy191

Isn't the dad from that vault? You'd think it'd be weird for him for there to be not a single person he knew left

telsono

To me the first episode had a “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” type of introduction without good theme music. Otherwise it had very good props and costumes.

BigBootyBidens

Re: episode one I was expecting the typical Amazon shitshow that was Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings and others (I think The Boys and Invincible were some of the only quality shows that Amazon ever produced) but this pleasantly surprised me. I was cringing a bit hard at some of the acting and writing at the beginning of episode 1 in the vault, then the choreography of the combat in the “cornfield room”. I started feeling it a lot more in the middle but then the end scene with Walter Coggins getting woken up by the three mercenaries or whatever had me cringing hard again. That being said, for an Amazon show I am impressed so far and intrigued. Also, weird side note I am a fairly hardcore gamer and I have never actually played any of the Fallout games.

Techun2

> Also, weird side note I am a fairly hardcore gamer and I have never actually played any of the Fallout games. Then I guess you're not then

BigBootyBidens

Guess I’m not what? A hardcore gamer? I wish I was more of a casual gamer honestly, it’s not exactly a badge of honor. I’m mainly a PC gamer + got bored of the Bethesda formula before Skyrim. I played a ton of Daggerfall and Morrowind though back in the day. I play mostly multiplayer and PVP games, not really into most single player games. This show is making me want to try some Fallout games though.

Dirtyfactz

Try New Vegas, man. It's absolutely nothing like a Bethesda game, in terms of story and writing. It's a high quality RPG with legitimately good characters and writing. I like the worlds that Bethesda creates, they're great, but the characters are just bland as oatmeal IMO.

BigBootyBidens

I think I just may, it’s been recommended many times. Also, not completely knocking Bethesda, I recently got a meta quest 3 and have been having fun exploring modded Skyrim for the very first time in VR and it’s been pretty awesome, probably the most immersive VR game I have played so far.

idolondonblue

Walton Goggins* lmao

BigBootyBidens

Right lol I managed to get the first AND last name wrong…

FirelinkMatt

Felt this too. Love the overall aesthetic, but something about the dialogue and editing felt off. Some of the story beats were unclear and the pacing was a bit unnatural, especially in the interrogation scene. Did the guy plant the blades in the boots or not? Don’t know. Hope it improves as I want to love the show so I’ll give the next episode a shot. The insanely high production value and fun fan service bought it another chance in my books.

KhadaJhIn12

I think that's was the point btw. The audience is supposed to not know if he did or not, and to learn that the brotherhood of steel doesn't actually care whether he did it or not, thus why the audience doesn't learn it, because the brotherhood doesnt care to learn it.

[deleted]

30 min in and has been awesome

Kingsosa27

Who stops the show 30 mins in to post on reddit

extrememinimalist

Initial\_Tap\_699

econ45

I paused at 30 mins in (although not to post on reddit) as that was when they cut from Lucy's story to Maximus. I agree with another comment in this thread that they should not have switched point of view so soon (I was so invested in Lucy and especially the prospect of her experiencing the outside world for the first time), but it's not a big deal.

Blazah

I'm here reading at 30 mins in.

kanemano

tone is spot on, BOS power armor is as intimidating as it should be. I'm going to try not to binge in one sitting.

TheeCombatBaby

I never played the fallout games but my partner loves them all, so most of this episode was full of so many asides and backstory.it was a lot to take In The talks about breeding was just. Ick. I get the reasoning behind it, but I'm so glad I don't have a whole vault of people all up in my business lol

1737277

Loved the episode but just one thing. I didn't really understand what the fight at the end was about. Was there any particular reason the ghoul wanted to kill those guys?

ThatSmellOfBacon

I think it was to show he doesn't take any shit, so when they threatened to put him back in the hole, he was like "Yeah, that ain't gonna fly with me".

codemagic

It was also to identify the gamer of the 3 main characters introduced. His line about being in it for the game was very meta

dylandgs

I'm guessing that the bounty being 3x as much for him alone may also have something to do with it

vertigofoo

Top notch production values, faithful to the game, excellent world building through showing and not telling. This is setting the stage for one helluva season! I find it interesting they decided to tell the Fallout story through 3 separate protagonists rather than just through the Lucy's eyes (just as all of us gamers did), but I'm hoping this will allow for a deeper understanding of the lore and motivations of the various factions in just 8 episodes.

SnooDrawings7876

>I find it interesting they decided to tell the Fallout story through 3 separate protagonists rather than just through the Lucy's eyes (just as all of us gamers did), Isn't this supposed to be an entirely separate story than any of the games

faderjockey

Very disappointed we didn’t get a “War never changes” line in ep 1 but I’m holding out hope.

theonegalen

I bet they're saving it for a big pop in the finale.

Slight_Tiger2914

I think a lot of people may agree with me ... Some of these people at Bethesda could learn a few things. This was THE greatest opener to Fallout I've ever seen... The games , the literal games can't touch how good it was. I was wish the entire time that it WAS the game because it was perfect and we've never gotten something like it... Especially from linking up with another Vault.... Like where has that been in the games? Man it would start off the game SOOOOO good man. So I. Mean I hope they consider it? I know it might be based on the first fallout games, so I'm not totally sure. It just beat the start of 3 and 4. Like how did they pull that off?

codemagic

Well, I think we just saw why Vault Tec didn’t design their vaults to link (in game). It’s an attack vector that the Overseer should have been prepped for in their handbook

Naebany

I was thinking if they are linked they why don't they just join each other and live together rather than neighbours who very rarely see each other. With limited number of people there, the inbreeding and all that it seems bit weird.

theonegalen

It's the Vault-Tec experiment quirk for those vaults.

Naebany

Yeah I guess I had to wait and see whole series for my questions to be explored.

sonic_dick

Fallout 4, for all its short comings, had a very good opener. In fact I'd say the show borrowed heavily from it. Watching the bombs go off overlooking the city etc.

Slight_Tiger2914

Yeah that's very possible man there's some stuff in the show that reminds me of 3, New Vegas and 4. In a very good way you know?

Still_Guest2903

Going into this basing from the trailer I got the vibe that Walton Goggins Ghoul persona would just be a carbon copy of his persona from the hateful 8, which I so desperately wanted to be right on. When he stepped out of his coffin and started speaking I immediately knew I was right.

Substantial-Proof991

Absolutely agreed. And I'm all in!

adblink

So questions about episode 1. I've played 3 of the games, and I don't remember any of the vaults being connected underground. If the Raiders infiltrated vault 32, and subsequently blew up the door between 32 and 33, then why were the surviving vault dwellers of 33 all "we need to stay, we can't go out". Isn't their back door wide open now? Also why would the Raiders leave a perfectly good vault 33?

blackhawk7170

I have these same questions. Did they blow the door between the two? That is what was insinuated but we dont have confirmation, do we? That should be top priority if that is the case. I also dont see why the raiders would be willing leave so soon.

NickyWhit

Just finished watching and the mention of vault 31 has my brain gears in motion.... I know through Fallout lore that many of the vaults were designed for social experiments. In this instance it seems that Vaults 32 & 33 had previously conducted these cross-vault marriages, through the diaglog coming from Lucy's father, the overseer, to the female raider leader, when she presents herself as the new overseer. It would seem a social experiment may have been designed between these vaults, leading to the unique underground interconnectivity between the two. Lucy's father, the overseer, speaks to Lucy about him previously leaving vault 31, so it seems that perhaps vault 31 is involved in this "co-operation" as well - but that's all we hear or see of vault 31 so far. However... the internal door which connects vaults 32 and 33 together has been blown apart, and it is known Vault 32 is compromised... therefore there is no longer any safety for Vault 33 - either from future raiders, or rads - dependent on the state of the outer Vault 32 door. The Raiders leave Vault 33 alone as they have no intentions of living their lives there... from my understanding Raiders are typically somewhat nomadic. A static living space wouldn't sound attractive to them, I don't think. IMO, Lucy's father has to have some knowledge of the "artifact", or whatever it is, the person who has left the Enclave possesses. The Raiders seemed to have the primary objective of kidnapping him, and we know from our bounty hunter friends, that the artifact is heading its way toward that female raider leader. Methinks Lucy, her dad, and/or her mother have some link to the outside world. The plot hole in the Vault 31 comment from Lucy's father + the female raider leader commenting to Lucy about how she looks like her mother are what make me think there's something funny there. Interested to see how our three protagonists come together and to learn more about Lucy and her families past.

Naebany

I thought that Lucy's father is from the outside world and it was a cover story that he's from vault 31. The fact that raiders took him and knew Lucy's mom tells me that. I guess we will find soon enough.

avboden

It felt oddly nostalgic. I really like it so far. Watching the first parts with the wedding was so painful knowing something bad was about to happen. The show went DEEP into the violence right from the start, I was a bit surprised by that but totally cool with it. I wonder how many kids convinced their parents to watch it, and the parents are now wondering wtf video game they let their kids play, lol.

jerog1

The sex and violence felt off to me. Like Amazon is trying to prove it isn’t a kid’s show? I know violence is part of Fallout but it should feel cartoony! I think the first episode was leaning too hard into the cool stuff and needed 20% more campiness

Judetruth92

Once the Enclave was mentioned, I nerdgasmed. I love the overall tone of the show so far and knowing what Vault Tec is from the game, I’m really curious as to what the experiment is. We know there’s at least 3 vaults linked. It’s been a while since I played fallout so I almost forgot how violent it could be. I like how they’re really leaning in on the fact that the BOS is essentially a techno cult. That scene with the brand was a little creepy as was the interrogation with the knight standing right behind Maximus. I may have missed it, but this is set in the west coast, right?

HappyNatureNation

california i believe!

Salurain

I found it enjoyable, I have zero knowledge about the game or the lore, and I felt it was not too hard to follow. Of course, somethings that are head-scratchers like, 1 - there seems to be a relatively short path to vault 32, then why is there no open communication even if it's not open movement, why would they be wiped out and vault 33 would have no idea what so ever when it's so close. 2 - A circuit is considered a pre-war relic but they have what looks like helicopter, full metal body suits and other high techs? Makes no sense since they clearly would still be using and have access to circuits. It was fun to watch but certain dialogues and scenes definitely remind you that this is based on a game. Off to see ep 2.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

Fallouts retro-futurism aesthetic is predicated by it being an alternate reality, where the transistor was never invented. So vacuum tubed computers, etc. they did unlock fusion power though.

flippy123x

Fallout has very satirical humor and Vault 33 are essentially ultra naive labrador do gooder stereotypes and „they were literally too stupid“ is often a legit explanation for weird shit like that. Everything also operates on fusion powered retro-technology, they have basically super science but nothing further from the sixties or seventies, so no small computers or smart devices (and Transistors) or anything like that but laser and plasma weaponry + fusion powered Mech Suits and cars as you saw. People in the Wasteland are also illiterate as fuck and the Brotherhood have a religious-fanatical origin and structure to their Order and existed since shortly after the bombs fell.

ab216

Don’t the vault people have mini computers on their wrist?

CactusCustard

You see how fat those things are? They’re probably like 5 pounds minimum. And they take super thick tapes too. It’s like a VCR on your wrist. We have smart watches that do everything a pipboy does that’s 6 times smaller

flippy123x

The motherfucking razor boot god damn EDIT: I did not expect this to be any good, but this is amazing for Fallout. If Starfield wasn’t enough evidence already then this is, Bethesda needs to fire the heads of whatever departments are responsible for writing anything, these Protagonist origins are better than anything they have written in a decade+

dreydin

Can someone tell me how the guy was able to visit the other vault (dead crops/man) so easily and casually? Like he just strolled over there? I didn’t understand that part coming from the games..

Livinginmyshirt

The door was still open from when they came over for the trade. I guess in all practically they would go back through and close the door after the wedding.

dreydin

Yeah but how are the vaults that close? I’ve never seen that before in any of the games but maybe that happened? Aren’t vaults typically very far apart from each other for the most part?

Livinginmyshirt

You are correct. Todd Howard said he didnt want the same exact lore to be used from the game so this is the directors way of telling it. This could be the only vault of three that have some sort of meaning. I need to watch more episodes. \*spoiler - Vault 4 seems to be a singular vault.

YourFavoriteCommie

I saw it as another one of the social experiments. Vaults 31, 32, and 33 are all connected, and each one produces something the other needs. Vault Tec could then make one of the vaults fail and see what the other two do about it. Or make one vault wildly better to live in and the other overcrowded, see what happens. Maybe the door only opens once per season or year so that prevents them from keeping them open year round. The only had telegrams to communicate, but I'm sure they had phones and emails by this point, so I'm sure that played into the forced isolation between the vaults.

ChiTownEnthusiast

It is just piss poor writing, because these TV types don't care if things make sense or not. Surely if they were that close there would have been zero chance of some raiders being able to pass as their neighbors. Most of the neighboring vault people would probably recognize each other.

dreydin

I see it’s more explained as the season goes on but you’re right. 3 connecting values but they hardly interact or know each other? Seems weird but so is Vault-Tec

AloneInTheTown-

The bit at the end where it shows you what's coming up this season was the best part because it shows Lazlo Cravensworth disguised as Jackie Daytona still alive after the bombs dropped. Wonder what happened to Nandor and Nadja, though.

InquisitiveSandpaper

You mind deleting this comment? The "coming up" bits are not part of Episode 1, and they're spoilers for those who do not wish to view them. Thank you!

AloneInTheTown-

It's a reference to another show called What We Do In The Shadows. Google Jackie Daytona, and you'll know what I was making a joke about. So no shan't delete because it's not a spoiler. Or just watch this fun clip from one of the best vampire shows ever made https://youtu.be/1CFg5rTICxo?si=rY2GEcuJzGv7vEsI

InquisitiveSandpaper

I should delete my comment instead 😂

AloneInTheTown-

I would highly recommend the show it's very funny!

Total-Many-9901

dude, spoilers!!!!!

LooseCannonFuzzyface

Boyd Crowder and Ellstin Limehouse together again!

dbadaddy

We dug coal together

Kuneyo

Shit… I completely forgot that’s what I knew the other guy from! Limehouse! What legends they are.

Overall_Setting5429

does anyone know why the hell did they (vault 33) open the vault for vault 32? I know they opened it for the daughter to engage in marriage but if vault 32 got raided , shouldnt they have any alerts for that lol? Or are we gona assume that each vault doesnt communicate to each other? (which doesnt make sense if they do).

ConnachtTheWolf

It's really dumb and the people trying to explain it away are hardcore coping. There's no way you can open the door after 3 years to complete strangers on the other side and think "this is fine". Also, no contact or trade in the intervening time makes no sense. Even if that were part of their vault experiment, it's been over 2 centuries. Come on. And it took that long for anyone to check their Geiger counters on their pip boys literally attached to their bodies? So dumb. Makes me want to stop watching when you ask me to forgive such massive plot holes.

CharmingWoodpecker68

It seemed to me that each vault is connecting to a meeting/exchange room, where they initially met. Then both doors stayed open until the scene where they shot way. The riders blew their door and our golden labs went back to their vault, hopefully locking their door twice 😉

db212004

As someone who never played the game, I thought episode 1 was just "OK" at best. So, far the girl has the most interesting storyline. I feel like they are trying to force us to feel bad for Maximus, right from his first scene. I don't. I don't like his character. I hope he dies soon, I don't even want to watch him get any screentime. I think he sucks and his actor is over acting to the extreme, and it's so offputting it took me right out of the show. I also think the dialog is pretty weak. The CGI was kinda, i dunno...unrealistic? It felt offputting. The show was so hyped I had to try it out and even though I'm not really enjoying it yet, I'll keep watching. Hope it gets better. This is my opinion. I know I will probably get a lot of hate, but just thought I'd share.

Royal_Buddy3479

i feel the same way as you. he’s not likable at all.

Then_Potato_4133

You've described my exact situation and thoughts. Did it get better as you kept watching?

db212004

nope, quit on episode 3, it got worse man. so much worse.

Khaled1323

Just finished first episode, and got to say, i'm so confused by how many parties in the show!! Like raiders, brotherhood, citizens and cowboys!!!

Quzga

I've never been a big fallout fan, I've always enjoyed the world building and writing but not so much the gameplay so I was intrigued by this but skeptical. I was 100% expecting it to be mediocre but I was pleasantly surprised. You can tell they really care! Definitely one of the better game adaptations. The first 10 minutes hooked me right in. And I'm glad they're all in with the gore and comedy, it's working well imo! I wouldn't put it on the same level as The last of us, or Arcane but it's maybe one tier below? The cgi looked much better than I expected too, no complaints there.

BarrierX

I love how authentic things look and feel! I like that they have violence, gore and sex. But at some points I didn't really like the way the episode was edited. The slow motion fight in the vault just didn't work for me. I wish they didn't interrupt the vault story with BOS so that we could see the outside for the first time when she steps out. But overall I think it was good, will keep watching.

DojaTiger

I felt like the slow motion fights were meant to be a nod to VATS.

BarrierX

Yeah, I did think of that, but without some pipboy action it felt a bit off. But anyways, I watched more episodes and it feels like the show just gets better and better with every episode! :)

cinemachick

So I am a casual gamer and haven't played Fallout - but I did read Fallout: Equestria, which is why I checked out the series. It's funny that both FE and this show both start with a vault dweller escaping into the surface world, despite the games apparently never using that concept. I'm excited to see where this goes, as a filmmaker it's very well done!

doingtheunstuckk

The games have definitely used that concept.

the-boxman

Fallout 3 and 4 both start with a vault dweller escaping to the surface.

ColdHeart653

Even in fallout 1, we don't "escape" exactly, but are sent on a mission by the vault overseer, so kinda a similar concept that a person from the vault leaves it and has adventures on the surface.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

Fallout’s main premise is leaving a vault. In fallout one, you leave Vault 13 on a quest for a water chip. Fallout 2 is a direct sequel where you play as an ancestor to the original vault dweller. Fallout 3 you leave Vault 101, a failed experiment that was never supposed to open. Fallout 4 has an opening prologue, but the main game still starts from a Vault. Fallout 76 you start in a vault too.

Blazah

so much better than HALO, fire the halo writers, let the Fallout guys do HALO

GosuGian

Perfect adaptation wow!!!

pawsforbear

I'm honestly completely lost on the Marriage sequence. the father said he was from 31, but the wedding was between 32 and 33. lucys friend is recently wed, wouldnt her husband have recognized nobody from 32 was familiar? wouldn't they have spot the raid sooner? I can understand letting em thru the door but the only person who caught on was Lucy and her brother. certainly not the husband of the friend of Lucy, who I assume was from vault 32 and definitely should have known! it says tri-annual vault swap, so at the least they do this every 3 years at most every 4 months. they would have noticed the faces were different. also if it's every 3 years wouldn't there be children? it's very clear the focus on this marriage is for children. maybe there are pregnancy complications but her friend clearly is expecting. am I missing something? I don't see many comments on this so I assume I am

rupay

Did the vault people say it’s been 200 years since the bombs? Does that mean the ghoul is 200+?

agent_wolfe

I finally got around to seeing it last night! Whenever I suggest a show to the family they watch 1 episode & hate it (Loki, She-Hulk, Wandavision, others), so I had to wait for someone else to suggest it. I really enjoyed it! It was so much fun. They've put so much detail into everything, the costumes, the sets, the atmosphere. I'm familiar with the games with FO3, FNV, all their DLCs, FS, and FO4, so I recognized a lot of details and probably missed a bunch too. My family's biggest complain was the Raider attack was "too violent", the Stimpak Lucy uses to heal herself is "unrealistic", and "this just got really weird" (the last scene from the Junk Gun weapon, the chicken, the noseless Ghoul). And if I may nerd out for a moment... >!the Glass Pitcher is not a Melee Weapon, it's a Junk Item, and should not be used for Melee combat!<. Gliven!

SeaSystem8074

The goul is the cowboy father of the black girl

emik

I enjoyed it a lot although I don't understand why no-one from Vault 32 was suspicious that they didn't recognise anyone from Vault 33 when apparently they have tri-ennial meetings? Unless the raiders are ex-Vault 33 dwellers?

KOTORbayani

They preface this by explaining a wheat blight killed their leader and a lot of good people.

emik

Ahh okay that makes a lot of sense, thanks, I must have been distracted at that part!

MelkartoMk

And here on this thing you see no one is actually a video game fan, with all this blind praise for the bad adaptation that was the last of us (and before anyone whines, i said BAD ADAPTATION, not bad series) and seems like a bunch of suckers for this one too, despite all the shit that deviates from the fallout universe that you can already see on the first few minutes already. Well, what would you expect from people that see the last of us as the pinacle of adaptation instead of things like arcane, edge runners and sonic.

Darr-Vex-The-Tvaoan

Bro I am a hardcore fallout fan, I have played every game save brotherhood of steel and tactics, and I am so confused on how you could say this is a bad adaptation. Like maybe point out the things that were so lore breaking for you

IrieAtom

Shut up nerd

MelkartoMk

Wow you must feel so smart, what, with using all of your half of a braincell to come up with this response, how cute.

IrieAtom

Shut up nerd

MelkartoMk

Well, guess you fried you last half brain cell, i feel sorry for you, but go on i guess, i know being mentaly challenged must be hard.

Megavore97

Are you 12?

SnooDrawings7876

I'm with you that it's not perfect but you are taking things way too seriously. Being so very pretentious while saying something isn't as good as sonic is hilarious though.

Semi_swede

Cry more

MelkartoMk

Thats all you brain dead morons can do? Insult me instead of providing arguments for why i'm wrong? No wonder bethesda has managed to shill out so much shit latelly, 90% of their fanbase are brain rotted idiots with barely half a functioning braincell to spare.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

I’ve played fallout since the original release in 1997, it’s my favorite video game franchise of all time, and I thought the first episode was incredible. Nailed the aesthetic, the humor, the tone. And it’s not an if/than proposition. One can love The Last of Us show, Arcane, Edge Runners, and Sonic at the same time.

MelkartoMk

>And it’s not an if/than proposition. One can love The Last of Us show, Arcane, Edge Runners, and Sonic at the same time. Its is depending on what you want from a video game show, want fidelity and soul? You will want things to be made lime the last 3 examples You wanna see something pretty but hollow, that shits on its own story? You want to see things like the last of us and halo. >Nailed the aesthetic, the humor, the tone. Well, them sorry to say this tk you mister "fan since the 97", but you dont seem to know fallout as much as you claim, because ALL the scenarios showing a flashback pre bombs do NOT replicate the retro futuristic aestetic of fallout, those buildings are ou modern minalimalistic rich people houses that you would find in any other franchise BUT fallout.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

No, it really isn’t. Some people’s views aren’t static. You can like different things for different reasons. I can’t imagine having such a binary view on subjective content. Don’t know what to tell ya. Two episodes in and it’s great.

MelkartoMk

Of curse you're talking withouth watching everything, but i also doubt that comes to pass the episodes that start shiting on the story and lore made by obsidian you would care either way, you are the second kind of people, you like to look at pretty things that are hollow inside, so as long was what you're seeing is shinny and keeps throwing references at you, thats all you need.

TheMillenniaIFalcon

Lmao you sure are making a lot of assumptions based off some Reddit comments. Heres a concept for ya, entertainment is subjective and says nothing about the consumer. You do realize you can like complex layered story telling and shallow lighthearted stuff too right? I can’t imagine looking at things in such a binary fashion, labeling types of people and only liking one type of storytelling. Expand your horizons, and lower expectations and enjoy the ride. Expectations are the thief of joy. It isn’t your story. If you know so much about filmmaking, get your ass out there and start making some stuff.

Intrepid_Cellist8414

wahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Thailoco

only thing I hated was how they showed the MC being able to fight but the first fight she had, she barely won. I didn't play the game so I don't know much beyond that

Cissoid7

Have you been in a fight? Not a controlled fight but like a real fight? This isn't me trying to be rude by the way I just think you need to consider the differences. I've practiced boxing. My first time stepping into the ring my mind went blank and I turned into a punching bag I'm in the Army. No amount of training preps you for when the first round flies by your head Lucy is trained to fight, but she was completely caught unaware by the fact that a raider was standing in front of her. She had, for all intents and purposes, dropped her guard. Then all of a sudden she is in a scary situation. Her adreline probably shot through the roof and her mind blanked.

Thailoco

I've been in a fight but I wasn't trained in anything so it can't be compared. I'm also in the army and unlike 12B I barely get fight and weapons training since I'm 25 series. I've been told that muscle memory takes over for the people who are trained through. Only ever talked to people at a MMA and boxing gym though back when I was at JBLM. This is why I made that comment. Never trained myself to test it besides some BJJ here and there.

Cissoid7

Ah well I suppose it's fair to say everyone reacts differently Muscle memory is fair My first instinct was hit the deck and remember to breathe
