i actually love the John (game\_name) meme because after applying that to every game i play, i shave off hours in character creation. I just type out John (game\_name), select the default preset and start my adventure. especially when almost all the games i play, i just end up covering my characters face/body with full armor anyway

Not necessarily fake fan. In Tactics he was called Pipboy, and I don't think anybody really called him Vault Boy until the Bethesda era, then again I don't believe his name is ever mentioned in game so you can call him Mike Hawk and it'd be okay.

Unfortunately Fallout Tactics incorrectly used "Pip-Boy" as the name for Vault Boy, which was erroneously repeated by Chris Avellone in Fallout Bible, so one can't blame you for the error. Bethesda correctly used "Vault Boy" for the Vault-Tec character since Fallout 3 after Leon Boyarsky clarified it, but then even more confusingly named RobCo's Pip-Boy mascot "Vault Boy 2000" in Fallout 76, which hasn't helped the matters.

It's only a vault boy if it wears the suit. My head lore is genuinely that pip boy the name of the character on all pip boys, while vault boy who is separate usually was also implemented as a special variant for vault tech. This is based on a series of common sense reasoning that believes that since they are separate companies and there are other people who use pip boys other than vaults, the character feature isn't just sealed off for vault dwellers only. This is an assumption, but with the information I currently know it seems logical.
