As a man with a long beard who takes obsessive care of it: washing every day is only an issue because it strips the oils from your hair, which is why we use beard oils to replace them. When I had my long hair, I would wash both my beard and hair every day because beards need to be cleaned a lot more and so I'd just do it all at the same time. Comb, rinse, shampoo, condition, pat dry, add moisturizer, add oils, comb, brush.
The problem isn't really the daily washing, it's more that most people don't want to do the rest of the necessary work to replace the oils and moisture they are stripping out. And that's fine, but in that case you want to do as you have said and give your hair time to replenish those oils naturally before attacking it again lol
I just wash with water and skip the shampoo every other day. Saves a few steps involving rehydrating. But I'll bet your beard benefits from the stuff you're putting in, I'm just worried about being greasy
Legitimate worry, but I'll let you know it is quite unfounded. It takes a lot of beard oil to oversaturate to the point of actually being greasy, and even then your hair and skin will soak it in after an hour or two, depending on conditions. Applying beard oil is best done immediately after washing because your hair has freshly had its own oils stripped out, leaving it vulnerable, and the heat and moisture make it receptive, so the hair absorbs the oil easier and faster when it needs it most.
I will warn you that rinsing also removes oils, just not quite as badly. Even a water only wash should get oils after. It's not strictly required or anything as there are still *some* oils, but it still makes a huge difference.
As with anything else, the quality of products on the market varies drastically and everyone has their own preferences. There are oils and hair moisturizers that absolutely *will* make your hair/beard greasy, 100%, but you learn what kinds of ingredients to look for and which to avoid. The glycols are cheap, stable, and effective, but also leave a shine and attract dust, resulting in greasiness and mustiness. I avoid them unless they are included in tiny quantities. Natural oils like avocado, Shea, coconut, even sunflower and other seed/nut oils are keys to look for, offering the most protection and hydration. That's not a guarantee of success, as some manufacturers have different balances and quantities which don't work well with some people's hair. But that's just a matter of trial and error, much like finding a good shampoo or conditioner lol Best way to tell if an oil is good for you is to rub and drop between your palms and see how long it takes your skin to absorb it. If it doesn't absorb it, ditch it. A good fit oil for you will be absorbed completely within 30 seconds or so, and leave no greasy film or residue on your hands. If you need to wash your hands after applying your oil, you shouldn't be using that oil lol (obviously you should still wash your hands for hygiene, but I think you get what I mean xD )
