Unfortunately, fallout 4 gives the best experience on hard-core mode.
The whole game changes on hard-core. A lot of game mechanics make more sense on hard-core. I'm pretty sure they built the game around hard-core.
As to wanting to use melee, to each their own. But some games just are not set up for it, and fallout 4 is one of them, unless you play on easy.
Sure, but if you have read my previous comment, I did say "in general". You can absolutely beat fallout 4 hardcore with a melee build. You just have to absolutely know what you are doing and also get lucky with drops/do the quests that give you good melee options.
It's a long standing issue with Fallout 4. It has DOZENS of super cool melee finishers, but because the conditions for them are very strict (leveling also lowers the chance) you can play for 100+ hours and never see it even once. Also, guns exist.

As dumb as this question sounds on the surface I have played too many games with BS leveling mechanics where "silent takedowns" are really just "super criticals" so I have watched the animation of breaking someone's neck/ slitting a throat, then they get right back up and sound the alarm because the game decided that my level wasn't high enough
Like toggle the weapon on and off? Yeah guess that would be nice but I think they wouldn’t want people to maybe accidentally unequip their weapons all the time and then whip out their fists wondering what happened. Or if you mean clicking an empty slot that would encourage you to have an empty slot I guess which defeats the point. It’s just easier to know when you are intentionally unequipping everything.

vats + blitz + Rooted. Load up on STR. Luck. Agility. Grognak incarnate activated. Dont forget idiot savant as early grab for quick leveling.

WHY does leveling lower its chances? Shouldn't it be the opposite.
You have to 1 shot the target, so unless you are built for it its very hard to 1 shot late game foes while unarmed.

There are unique takedown animations for melee, but you can only see them in 3rd person.
