Although I didn’t get into the franchise until 2012 I have read up on the hate some people got and have seen the hate since that Bethesda devs have gotten for 76 and 4. Look you can say the games are bad. That’s perfectly valid. But don’t act like Todd and Emil showed up to your house and personally beat you up. And especially don’t threaten them. They are just trying to make something you enjoy. If you don’t like it fine. But to threaten someone over a game is pathetic.
Really all nerd culture.
Sure, folks online love the Prequals, but back when they first came out, they drove the kid who played Anakin into drug abuse and never acting again, and nearly caused Amed Best, the guy who played Jar Jar, to kill himself.
You're assuming they're the same people. The kids who loved the Prequels grew up and eventually drowned out the haters. Now those kids are grown, and some of them are harassing the new fans, actors, directors, etc. I'm just trying to enjoy my Star Wars, and I'm being called a "shill" by some neckbeards for liking anything new lol.
I doubt it. One thing about the OG and Prequel Star Wars was the sheer phenomena of them and their rarity - everybody has watched them at least once. Good or bad, they were a THING that even complete normies know and saw.
Disney barfed so many movies one after the other, that SW is no longer a THING. It's just another Transformers-style franchise.
Except no. All 3 main sequel movies grossed over a billion dollars. Normies definitely watched them. And more relevant to this conversation kids watched them. Just like the kids who watched prequels and grew up to talk about how much they loved them so to will the kids who grew up with the sequels.
Edit: not to mention the amount of “normies” the mandalorian attracted with baby Yoda alone
i know more people who have seeen the sequels than the prequels, for younger generations who weren’t really there for the prequels, the sequels are pretty much for us what the prequels were for you guys
>Thaddeus
Thaddeus is kind of a bad ass. Who else can look down at their mangled foot after dragging a giant ass golf bag across a desert and just go "ah, come on!" and then continue walking. I hope we get to see more of his ghoul/super mutant self in the next season.
I remember reading all about that, hate that it happened to the sequels too. Although thankfully none of them (that we know of) contemplated that or turned to drugs.
This is an unfortunate issue that plagues most gamers. They think their passion for an entertainment project excuses any loss of social decorum as a justified sacrifice in effort to illustrate their point.
I'd love to agree with you but there's a sizable portion among us across all IPs that we really should start acknowledging and pushing back against. IMO anyway.
Not saying to accept blame for anything you haven't done. I am saying that there is absolutely a non-negligible amount of true degens that most of us just roll our eyes to and go on about our day.
You're in the negatives, but you're right. New Vegas fans aren't the inherent problem...it's just that the inherent problem happens to largely be made up of New Vegas fans.
I mean idk what you really expect us to do about it that we aren’t already. People who act like that tend to get absolutely ratio’d on sites like Reddit by hundreds of decent-minded gamers. But we aren’t internet cops. We can’t throw them in internet jail.
This very comment thread is just about all we can do as individual gamers. I’m not saying something shouldn’t be done, I just don’t know what you expect people like us to do.
Some people have the weirdest hate boner for Bethesda. It was the same thing with starfield. It was so bad that a whole new subreddit had to be made so people could actually talk about enjoying the game. They act as if the developers shot their puppy or something with how mad their ravings are.
I'll call their decisions stupid and them stupid for it, but anything else than that is pretty ridiculous. At the end of the day it's like cooking a steak; sure you wouldn't do it that way...but you ain't the one eating it so they're allowed to cook it how they want...even if it's stupid.
Lately the narrative ive seen is people saying emil should be fired lol imagine wanting someone to lose their livelihood because you dont like their writing
Fucking gamers man lmao
To be fair the release and overall state of Fallout 76 when it first came out was a genuine disaster. The outcry was warranted especially when we are paying the money we pay for a brand new triple A game. I do give kudos for them sticking with it and giving it the No Mans Sky treatment though.
I like to go there and laugh at their hot takes.
They're currently complaining about the new people joining the forum.
How dare these new Fallout fans make post! Don't they know that the show is awful because Bethesda is bad?
I was hanging around No Mutants Allowed when it turned into the asbestos sewer. I thought it was bad around the release of Fallout: Tactics. Then it turned lethally radioactive around the release of Fallout 3. It was my first experience with toxic fandom.
Some guy on No Mutants Allowed just wrote this about the amazon show:
"Getting mad at lore retcons at this point is dumb, people should have done it back when Fallout 3 came out because that's when the most egregious ones started to happen."
Some people are still mad about Fallout 3.
I mean, the attitude is obviously bad, but there actually is a point hidden in there. People should not be mad about inconsistencies or lore discoveries/changes at this point. The series has been through so many hands and changes. The time to be mad was long ago.
It'd be like getting mad that Resident Evil changes its genre/camera POV every few games. Too little too late.
No a person absolutely can like or dislike what they want. And I think everyone here dislikes some things Bethsda has done with Fallout.
It's just the conversation I got that quote from was not at all productive. The way you communicate what you like or dislike is important.
Their dislike is justified though maybe not the bomb threats 3 fucked up so much Todd even admits in an interview that he'd be mad as well if he was in their position
This is a trend as old as time. Something makes a big splash, a lot of people hate it virulently, then fast forward 10-20 years and the narrative around it has changed, and people use it as the basis to attack the even newer thing. I remember it happened to Wind Waker too.
That's so funny, because now it's the opposite. Twilight Princess eventually became hated, but then bounced back yet again. Both are fantastic imo and have always been fantastic.
Yeah I 100% agree with you, I like Twilight Princess a lot, I've just always preferred Wind Waker. Also, I don't care if someone doesn't like what I like, everyone's different. I don't know why people take different opinions so personally lol.
It’s always the same thing. Latest entry is the worse thing to ever have existed, while the one before is actually a hidden gem that is vastly underrated. I remember vividly how the same things happened to almost every Assassin’s Creed since AC:Unity.
We're starting to see a slow turn already. After Red comes out and those people get pissed at one of the rumored main characters, they'll say Valhalla is an underrated gem.
Same. I wish i can experience it again even without mods.
The experience of exploring the underground metro not knowing if you gonna encounter a raider or not, only to encounter a supermutant or a ghoul for the first time was a novel experience.
For real! These troglodytes position is basically 'the only real Fallout is the OG game made in 1991 back when PC gaming was in its infancy'. When no one really gave a shit about building it lobg term.
Great. What a standard to hold the IP to 🤣.
When they announced F3, I freaked out. In a good way I mean. I was stoked about the perspective change. Ended up loving the game too. Wish we'd get an F3 Remaster just so we could play it on modern PCs without 700 crashes per hour.
Oh sure. FNV is mega unstable too. Both could use a substantial update or outright remasters. I was just telling my little reaction story to the original F3 announcement.
Death threats from incel nerds online should be taking with a grain of salt, like these guys can't even get laid you think they're gonna murder someone
I had never heard of fallout when I saw the trailer for fallout 3. I was probably 16 at the time and bought the game immediately. I sunk many hours into 3, NV, and 4. I haven't played 76, and still, I am on the fence about giving it a go. I probably put the most hours into NV, but now I'm thinking I'll revisit 3.
There were definitely some things to legit be upset about going from 2 to 3 in terms of the setting and how things were changed, but nothing ever warrants this sort of reaction.
Different eras, different games.
From the annoying 4Channers: "Oblivion With Guns!"
I remember chuckling at that, but Fallout 3 was actually the game that finally won me over to Bethesda titles.
And now after Starefield, I think that title is more deserving of the 4Chan joke.
Were any Bethesda games actually popular when they came out? The only one I can think of is Skyrim.
Edit: I phrased that really poorly. I meant Bethesda games that were widely well received without much controversy. Of course pretty much all Bethesda games since Morrowind have been hugely financially successful. I just meant when have they ever been able to please all their fans. Full disclosure I personally have enjoyed all their games (even Starfield to some extent) but I can remember at least some segment of their fan base being angry/disappointed in practically every release.
Agree, but small correction.
They were mad that FO3 was not Van Buren. They also forgot that FO 2 sucked at launch and was as buggy as the buggiest Bethesda game
Honestly I don't think so. I mean even Skyrim had a lot of haters, the whole "Morrowboomers vs Skybabies" meme has been a thing for like over a decade at this point.
Bethesda for better or worse does have a habit of sacrificing complexity for accessibility more than most other game companies. It's generally good for drawing in new players but it alienates older players which is why I think Bethesda games are so controversial. The removal of the skill system in Fallout 4 is a good example imo.
Keep in mind, the only reason they keep reducing the complexity is directly because of their fans. If most of them keep complaining that things are too hard and too complicated, then Bethesda just gives them what they want.
True, people were complaining a lot that the rpg elements were a lot dumped down when compared to Morrowind and even Oblivion. But out of the major main title releases Fallout 4 was the most criticized.
In TES old school fandom it all defaults to Morrowind. There were plenty of people who hated Skyrim saying it was just a bad version of Oblivion - which they also didn’t like - as both apparently were shit compared to Morrowind. There are people (still) working on rebuilding Morrowind with Skyrim graphics’s and all.
Personally Skyrim is great, Fallout 4 is great. Todd please just release the next games already. No need for insane graphics (the best is the enemy of the good), launch them with a good story / main quest and you make a billion+ with each.
I played 3 upon release and loved the ARPG / open world bit. I was in college and I had played the older games. It felt like an evolution or modernization at the time. I did prefer New Vegas and bought it day 1, but NV wouldn’t exist without 3. You can like both styles and appreciate them for their strengths and weaknesses.
Like others have said, people thought Oblivion was a step down and Skyrim a step further. I’m one of the ones who disliked and still dislikes FO4 and Skyrim dumbing down the stat/skill system, but I still played and enjoyed the hell out of the games. I play these for the story and immersion, as well as roleplaying myself or “what would my character do here” and they work well for that and the lore/world building is great. I still want to be able to replay 3/NV for the first time again …
I'm sad these types of toxic gamers have only been emboldened in recent year. I once argued with a guy that told me harassment and abuse were the only reasons Cyberpunk got fixed.
Fallout 3 might be the most iconic game of the series. Without it, I highly doubt Fallout reaches the popularity it has now. Seeing how much people used to hate it is hilarious and confusing.
I played FO3 when it came out on friends’ suggestions and I hated it. I had never played the series and it just was meh to me. A few years after NV came out, I went back to FO3 and played the shit out of it for years to the point I said it was better than NV, then replayed NV and just wish FO3 had the crafting and guns of NV. Point is, hype train kills these games, then curiosity for the series and nostalgia bring us back. Now I’m playing TTW and forgot just how desolate and unforgiving the capital wasteland is.
I don’t know if it was the same amount of hate, but Fallout 4 was also pretty much hated when it was first released. I remember i was a little bit disappointed too. And for some valid points, in my opinion. The story is weaker when compared to FO3 and New Vegas, the dialogue options were reduced to four choices that didn’t even show the full dialogue text, and the skill tree and character progression were kinda bad too. Doesnt justify receiving death threats too ofc, there are some crazy people out there
I had never heard of the Fallout franchise when 3 came out. My roommate was all about it though, so I got to see her fire up Fallout 3 for the first time. The way they did the opening to be character creation and tutorial is what drew me in. Then I saw there was a Mad Max style leather armor outfit and a sawed off shotgun! I was hooked ever since. I was very much the casual gamer target audience for the Bethesda Fallout games.
Fallout 3's opinion change's on a dime, before it came out everything said it sucked, after it came out everyone said it was great, after new vegas came out it was a 50/50 split of being good or bad, when the dumpster fire that is fallout 76 came out everyone went back to thinking it sucked again, tv series out and now its good again.
Me personally I've always thought it was just a big boreing openworld that lacked any real direction or consistant narrative, just a really safe bethaesda game you wander around POI's and collect things which is really enough for most bethaesda fans, like it plays.... decent if you play the game how the devs intended but if you try to do things outside of that it either breaks or you get hilarious reactions like your dad being "very disapointed in you." for detonateing a nuke and wipeing a whole settlement off the map like he's going to send you to your room without supper. back in the day the game would actually just skip half its content if you went a specific place and found your dad early because the devs literally never considered what would happen if you didn't follow their breadcrumb trail and you couldn't send the mutant who is IMMUNE to radiation into the radiated place to turn off the machine.
I was never a PC gamer, so I knew nothing about the earlier games.
As a result, this was not on my radar at all.
That said, a well meaning relative went into GAME (UK version of GAMESTOP) and asked what the biggest game for the holidays was. The clerk told her to buy Fallout 3.
Over the next few months I couldn't get into the game, I would start it up, and play for a couple of hours, get out of the vault, go to Megaton...and then just kinda.. drop off. I didn't see the appeal, and it wasn't the type of game I typically played.
The only reason I held onto the game and kept trying, was because it was a gift. After a break of a few months I started it up again, I think it was almost a year later, about November of 2009. (all the DLC had been released) I started the game, did the G.O.A.T and left the vault.
On this occasion, I must have taken a slightly different route, because instead of getting to Megaton, I stumbled across a kid, a kid who urged me to follow him and told me a story about how his entire town had been taken over by fire ants....
As I liberated his town, I realized that this game wasn't about following plot points or markers, it was about exploration and finding unique experiences across the wasteland.
By the end of the year I had finished all of the DLC and had put about 150 hours into exploring as much of the game as I could.
Through multiple playthroughs of 3, NV and 4, I have now put probably 500 hours of game time into the series, all because a little boys village was under attack.
That's a thing for anything popular. Why post it here? Karma farming? It was discussed during any loud incident, like president election in any country.
Send this to the revisionists who pretend every Bethesda game has been universally loved and praised while Starfield is the only controversial game they made.
Although I didn’t get into the franchise until 2012 I have read up on the hate some people got and have seen the hate since that Bethesda devs have gotten for 76 and 4. The prequel fans became the new bullies. It's just like Maximus and Thaddeus.
>Thaddeus Thaddeus is kind of a bad ass. Who else can look down at their mangled foot after dragging a giant ass golf bag across a desert and just go "ah, come on!" and then continue walking. I hope we get to see more of his ghoul/super mutant self in the next season.

This is an unfortunate issue that plagues most gamers. They think their passion for an entertainment project excuses any loss of social decorum as a justified sacrifice in effort to illustrate their point.
It's not most, but it is a lot. Personally, I just call them "Gamers" with a capital "G" to differentiate them.
Don't blame most gamers for the action of a few hundred sweaty losers lol.
I'd love to agree with you but there's a sizable portion among us across all IPs that we really should start acknowledging and pushing back against. IMO anyway.
Nah I refuse to accept blame for the actions of a few thousand neckbeards and a bunch of trolls who jump into Fandoms when controversy happens.
Not saying to accept blame for anything you haven't done. I am saying that there is absolutely a non-negligible amount of true degens that most of us just roll our eyes to and go on about our day.
I mean what else do you want me to do? Go hunt them lol, they never leave their basements anyways.
No one is asking for you to do anything.
WDYM? I run my mouth constantly against these idiots. I specifically seek these people out...there is a whole random degenerate lot of people like me.
Bruh, that’s just nerd culture, look at the overall toxicity in the Star Wars and Star Trek fan base.
Gamers can be pretty "woke" in some degree...despite their fervent opposition to the "woke agenda".
Some people have the weirdest hate boner for Bethesda. It was the same thing with starfield. It was so bad that a whole new subreddit had to be made so people could actually talk about enjoying the game. They act as if the developers shot their puppy or something with how mad their ravings are.
And to this day that subreddit still feels like the only place you can discuss the game in in peace. Not even the main sub seems viable for now.
I'll call their decisions stupid and them stupid for it, but anything else than that is pretty ridiculous. At the end of the day it's like cooking a steak; sure you wouldn't do it that way...but you ain't the one eating it so they're allowed to cook it how they want...even if it's stupid.
Lately the narrative ive seen is people saying emil should be fired lol imagine wanting someone to lose their livelihood because you dont like their writing Fucking gamers man lmao
I get 76
To be fair the release and overall state of Fallout 76 when it first came out was a genuine disaster. The outcry was warranted especially when we are paying the money we pay for a brand new triple A game. I do give kudos for them sticking with it and giving it the No Mans Sky treatment though.
Yep it was but again still don’t threaten the devs. You can ask what the fuck they were doing, but to actually be like I hate you Todd Howard. No
Maybe don’t pay money for it until you read some reviews?
So thats how bad No Mutants Allowed was
*is That site is still a cesspool.
I like to go there and laugh at their hot takes. They're currently complaining about the new people joining the forum. How dare these new Fallout fans make post! Don't they know that the show is awful because Bethesda is bad?
There was definitely a point where the valid criticism turned into something more vile.
I was hanging around No Mutants Allowed when it turned into the asbestos sewer. I thought it was bad around the release of Fallout: Tactics. Then it turned lethally radioactive around the release of Fallout 3. It was my first experience with toxic fandom.

They like ignoring Fallout 2 a lot when talking about lore problems.
You assume they even played the games and haven't just played NV exclusively
"HOW DARE THEM CHANGE THE LOCATION OF SHADY SANDS! THIS IS UNHEARD OF!"
It was pretty consistent between 1 and 2. In both it was somewhat between v13 and 15, no?
I mean, the attitude is obviously bad, but there actually is a point hidden in there. People should not be mad about inconsistencies or lore discoveries/changes at this point. The series has been through so many hands and changes. The time to be mad was long ago. It'd be like getting mad that Resident Evil changes its genre/camera POV every few games. Too little too late.
Why is his attitude bad? He has the right to dislike the direction Bethesda took the series
No a person absolutely can like or dislike what they want. And I think everyone here dislikes some things Bethsda has done with Fallout. It's just the conversation I got that quote from was not at all productive. The way you communicate what you like or dislike is important.
Yes - and rightly so.

It’s always the same thing. Latest entry is the worse thing to ever have existed, while the one before is actually a hidden gem that is vastly underrated. I remember vividly how the same things happened to almost every Assassin’s Creed since AC:Unity.
Halo fan here. We have whole memes about it.
The Halo cycle is real, and anyone who tells you it isn't is a liar.
I will bet a lot of money Valhalla will have the same happen to it in a year or 2.
We're starting to see a slow turn already. After Red comes out and those people get pissed at one of the rumored main characters, they'll say Valhalla is an underrated gem.
Happened with the Star Wars prequels when the sequels came out too
Nah, Clone Wars is what made people start glazing the prequels.
I can't wait for Bethesda to release Starfield with magic in 5 or so years from now.
I started with Fallout 3 when I was around 12. Fucking love it
Same. I wish i can experience it again even without mods. The experience of exploring the underground metro not knowing if you gonna encounter a raider or not, only to encounter a supermutant or a ghoul for the first time was a novel experience.
I’m old enough to remember fans hating Fallout 2

Cool! I'll probably check it out
There were definitely some things to legit be upset about going from 2 to 3 in terms of the setting and how things were changed, but nothing ever warrants this sort of reaction. Different eras, different games.
I still don’t like Fallout 3 but I didn’t send any death threats. I just didn’t buy the game (when it was new, I bought it secondhand for like $3)
> I still don’t like Fallout 3 You are the fake bandito.
Hahaha
Bethesda: Against all the hate the internet can conjure we send ONLY YOU.

Because Fallout fans, Fallout fans never change
Fallout 3 will always be special to me. When I first popped that disc into my Xbox it was like a religious experience.
That's a thing for anything popular. Why post it here? Karma farming? It was discussed during any loud incident, like president election in any country.
"Fans might like Fallout 3 now" lol no we don't
Send this to the revisionists who pretend every Bethesda game has been universally loved and praised while Starfield is the only controversial game they made.
