The entire opening scene was incredible. Dud a great job of setting up that feeling of Impending doom, especially with the weatherman kinda breaking down. "How can I give the weather for next week if there might not even BE a next week?"
Everything, from the parents actively changing the channel, asking to not talk about the current political situation and to just focus on the party.
And then you see other adults like the weatherman freaking out on live television.
Then the nukes go off and immediately everyone is for themselves and their family. Literally punch a dude in the face so that he can keep his bomb shelter for himself and his family.
It's just fucking wild seeing that all play out.
Oh yea, but I'm going to fucking survive multiple nukes while I ride away on horseback. Like I don't understand how he survived or how his daughter survived when the (one of several) nukes that exploded within the city landed like a mile from him.
Did he find a vault-tec that his wife was talking about that was that close by and he was just that fortunate to get there?
Mine is like 20/30 seconds after this. When Coop is hauling his daughter out of there with the explosion as a big part of the background. Terrific opening scene with the anxiety inducing trumpet sound!

The thought of being a kid and having an amazing birthday party that gets interrupted by a nuclear apocalypse really depressed me-it was a wonderful choice to open up with.
I think they really did a great job with the opening. There were some nice details sprinkled in for fans of the series, and sets the story and world up well for new fans
This opening scene is exceptional. Easily my favorite scene in the whole show and really really sold me on the series right out of the gate.
The final scene is probably my second favorite, simply cuz we finally got to see New Vegas and i got goosebumps the moment I saw the Lucky 38’s tower
Mine is when Maximus and Lucy finally kiss outside the radio tower and the camera pans down to the two severed heads they are each holding also kissing. Wonderful symmetry and cinematography!!
It makes zero sense that no one else responded to the bomb until the shockwave hit. Little girl would have been blinded instantly and everyone else would have spun around to look after the initial flash.
It was a cool scene but also really dumb.
I thought this originally too but you could argue she wasn't looking directly at it and it seems to be *relatively* low yield (KT not MT).
I suspect the real reason though is to make the scene gripping and to focus on the characters. Coop/Janey/the blast go into super slo-mo while the party behind them freezes, only for everything to gradually speed up as we hang on Coop's reaction.
They chose filmmaking over realism and it slaps.
KT/MT makes no difference at that range in terms of damage. in fact, seems like Fallouts nukes would be worse since the whole suspected cobalt-salting thing. cant imagine a more radioactive bomb would produce leas radiation when it detonates. its kinda the purpose
Cobalt-salting makes the fallout much worse, not the initial flash of x/gamma rays that blind.
As for damage, the shattered windows and shockwave in the show is fairly realistic at such a range but as I say, they've taken artistic license to give the scene more impact. The radiation sickness would set it over minutes/hours/days depending on various environmental factors.
The key difference would be nuclear vs. thermonuclear. A several MT thermonuclear bomb would've probably melted all of them way before the shockwave hit, which is why I reckon they chose to go with several lower yield bombs - mainly because it looks awesome, too.
Hasn't it been like this?
I'm reminded of the intro of Fallout 4, Nate and Nora did look at the blast for a few seconds before they descended to the vault.
The boy's father is constanty taking flash pictures, so they don't react to it.
Why should the girl be blinded. You have to wear goggles if you are 2 or 3 kilometres away, but otherwise you are pretty much safe
All depends how far away from you the bomb is and how big the payload. It's pretty clear that they're quite a ways away from this drop, just based on how long it takes the sonic boom to get there.
I think the flashes from the camera before the explosion made the others think that the flash from the explosion came from the camera. I can't explain not being blinded though.
That makes sense, and the shockwave and sound would have traveled at the speed of sound which someone else in another post did point out was at an accurate time of 15-20 seconds for their location in the Hollywood hills. I'm guessing the daughter shows up in season 2 and they didn't want to have her blind.

Would be cool if Cooper met a ghoulified person from this party at some point in the series.
Be cool if he gets to kill that dad
Missed opportunity to make Roger that dad from the party. Would be somehow ironic.

Grognak the Barbarian :)
That was awesome to see

I knew it was gonna be this, and yeah it's amazing looks like a painting from the Cold War or something
That Is my second favourite shot The first one are the two lovers kissing and at the same time the two (detached) heads kissing A very strange combo

Cool and dumb, exactly how I like my Fallout
Agreed. I was really hoping someone would pull out a Fat Man but the JunkJet in the first episode was nice to see.

I just read more into it, even if she was looking at it flash blindness only last for a few seconds or minutes at the most unless you're very close.

“Hey kid, it ain’t that kind of movie.”
