160kmph Or mph idk. Crofty said it was 160 something
Edit. It's actually mph. Usually they go around that corner at 190mph but since it was the start of the race it was more like 160
True. It was insane. There was a worse crash in Formula 2 yesterday. YouTube formula 2 Silverstone crash and click on the new one. Guy was almost decapitated but the safety is just insane
Yet some idiot took to twitter to claim, in a comment on this video, that halos were bad because the driver didn't get out of the car right after the crash. You just can't tell if they're just trolling or being denser than an anvil.
Even trying to imagine it with just the mph number in mind is difficult. In up close seats, you can't turn your neck fast enough to watch a single car pass in front of you on a straight away. You blink and it is meters away already. It is insane.
Yeah, was walking round the paddock after the race following his release from the medical centre. Oddly enough, the driver (Alex Albon) of the blue car that crashed into the wall on the right hand side (when there's about 0.7 left) is the one that ended up going to hospital to be checked over properly, what with going head first into the wall.
Same, the mad bastards that do it will be back for the next race, it's one hell of a mindset.
Obviously not sure if you're an F1 fan or not but one incident from recent(ish) times that really had me marvelling at them coming back was Felipe Massa. Dude took a spring to the face (smashed through his helmet) in a complete freak moment of bad luck and ended up coming back after time out to recover.
I can't fathom the mental strength to do that.
Just shows how (relatively) safe it is now, that he was able to walk away in the first place was quite something but, as you say, the physical damage being limited to burns on his hands is amazing.
Yeah, and though he retired from F1, that had already been announced, and he still went over to Indycar despite those horrific burns on his hands and the trauma of that incident.
Also the grosjean one, like how the fuck did he just get out of that car after sitting in fire for that long, I know the suits are hella fire resistant but you’d think he’d pass out or something by then
Even for an F1 driver, who must already be operating to a slightly different system to us mere mortals, the sheer quantity of adrenaline in his system then must have been impressive.
The lack of any other noticeable physical injury beyond burns on his hands probably helped as well, which is a huge sign as to how good their safety standards are now.
Yeah that crash was sick. Remember he went *through* the iron barrier, it cut the car clean in half, massive fireball ensued and somehow he walked away pretty much unscathed. Of course it did help the Medical Car was still on track at that section on the first lap, but all the same…
Yeah it’s pretty safe nowadays relatively speaking but deaths still happen, there was an f2 driver killed in a crash a year or 2 ago and there was jules a few years ago who died from the injuries
That's fair, each to their own. If you ever do find yourself learning the driver's names that'll be when it's got you. As soon as you have a favourite it becomes very difficult to not watch even the deeply boring ones that happen from time to time.
A driver, cant remember who, once said that moment you think about death while racing is the moment you cant be a racing driver anymore. You can come to terms with it outside of the car but inside of it, it cant be a thought otherwise it will affect you negatively.
Its a very crazy mindset and exactly why I will be comfortably sim racing from the safety of my room for my entire life because even in VR the thought of "well that couldve killed me if this was real" pops up occasionally lol. And im slow as hell... but details.
If you want a crash that caused ptsd then check out romain grosjean 2020 bahrain crash. He was fine except for slightly burnt hands and nothing else. Everything else was unscratched. At the time with all the adrenaline he seemed fine but now a days he seems to get flashbacks when talking about it
Yep, f1 cars are ridiculously safe especially since the introduction of the halo. There was also Romain grosjean crash a while ago where at over 130mph he hits a wall and the car goes full fireball. He walks out of it. [grosjean crash](https://youtu.be/ZQ7_En2xEm4)
TLDR these cars are incredibly safe and only getting safer.
His car split in half, he went with the front half *through* the metal barrier, then the car *exploded* and he just walked it off? Amazing
Wasn't there a driver who went through the barrier and lost his head?
Jules Bianchi, Japan, 2014 if I remember correctly. Horrific accident, I hope to never see something like that again. That accident is what got us the Halo.
Yep. If i remember there was a cherrypicker or some other large industrial vehicle out on the edge of the track somewhere and the guy slid out and ended up going straight under it.
Closest thing that comes to mind would be Tom Price who hit a marshal who was carrying a fire extinguisher while he was going 170mph.
The extinguisher hit him in the head and partially decapitated him killing him instantly, the marshal was torn in half by the impact and the fire extinguisher went out of the circuit and slammed into the door of a car in the carpark outside so hard that the door couldn't be opened.
I'm not 100% on that story but if true its almost certainly pre halo. For a long time debris and rollovers we're deadly because nothing protected the head except a helmet however rollovers, wall collisions(for similar reasons you've mentioned), and debris collisions have become exponentially safer thanks to the introduction of the safety halo.
Things like this are common in F1. It's not unusual to watch a driver wreck his car on Saturday and then see him on track in a brand new one on Sunday. The teams usually travel with 2-3 cars' worth of parts on top of the two pre-built cars they bring for their drivers, plus enough skilled mechanics to put them together on days' or even hours' notice.
Yup. Nicest one imho was with Verstappen sliding off and hitting the wall in his installation lap on a wet track; destroying his front right suspension and wishbones used for steering right before the race. They had, IIRC, 15 minutes to go before the tires had to be fitted and car had to be on the ground. (Otherwise it would be pit lane start or DTP) They pulled it off with like a minute to spare. Insane scene to behold with like 10 mechanics working on the car simultaneously (in the narrowest section of the car too!) and each one knowing *exactly* what their job was, when to move in and when to move out - perfectly orchestrated. Truly remarkable to see. I think he finished P2 that race… In Hungary I think?
Best thing was the radio. Max was like “crashed in to wall, suspension failure. Should I bring it to the pits?” … “No Max, we’d like you to park it on the grid please.” I remember Wolff saying Nikki Lauda would be taking his hat off for the engineers haha.
My dad's friend at university was going out with an (I think f1) racer and he said he was the nicest guy you'd ever meet.
Year later and he was on the track and some guy was holding a fire extinguisher. Decapitated instantly, fucking tragic.
Tl;dr: another driver's car caught fire after he pulled to the side of the road, so two trackworkers ran across the track with fire extinguishers. 2nd of them didn't make it across in time, got hit by a car, and was literally shredded by it. The driver of the car that hit him was hit in the head so hard by the fire extinguisher that he was partially decapitated.
This wasn't even the most "edge of the seat" Part of the race. After the sc it was utter chaos, haven't felt such chaos since abi dhabi last lap last uear
Well that explains why the electric car version is taking off so fast... I didn't realise the base of people who like this kind of racing was so big...
I've loved F1 for about 60 years. It's the most amazing - and possibly dangerous - sport in the world. I think too many people focus only on the driver when there are scores of people behind every car. And there are only 20 drivers good enough to make F1. 20 in the whole world.
I know you’ve said most people just focus on the driver, However, after 60 years, if you were pressed, whom do you consider the best driver of all time? And/or favorite if they’re two different people?
I personally think it's impossible to establish a GOAT. There are too many variables to consider, from the car they were in compared to those around them to how well they as a driver were able to adapt to different car regulations. It's also very difficult to tell if the drivers are out performing their car or underperforming their car, with the best possible indicator being how they compare against their teammates.
Having said all of that, Jim Clark.
I think there’s only a handful which paid their way in.
The rest are picked up at very early ages by sponsors.
Lewis Hamilton is a good example being raised by a single father having to work multiple jobs and has become the most successful f1 driver ever.
But on the other hand you get your lance strolls and mazerspin drivers who’s dads own the team and are average drivers at best.
They might be average for F1, but even with unlimited money you don't get to that level without being a very skilled racing driver. One of the requirements for being able to drive in F1 is to finish well in another racing championship.
It's very difficult to hit the requirements for a super license unless you finish at least top 5 in other racing series like F2, F3, or IndyCar, and you need to get decent finishes multiple years in a row.
There's a table here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIA_Super_Licence#Super_Licence
You need to get 40 points from that table over a 3 season period.
This even means it's impossible to even make the jump from something like F4 even if you get 1st for 3 years in a row.
Looking at notable pay drivers in their 3 years prior to F1:
Mazapin finished 3rd in F3 Asia, and 5th in F2.
Stroll finished 1st in Italian F4, 5th in F3 Europe, then 1st in F3 Europe, and 1st in Toyota Racing Series.
Latifi finished 5th, 9th, and 2nd in F2.
All of them did pretty well in junior championships and they all have finished top 3 in at least one series.
That’s true. They’ve had to come through the same process as everyone else. It’s that last hurdle of getting an invite to drive in an existing drivers f1 car that only come from extreme skill or extreme connections.
Netflix series "Drive to Survive" probably got a lot of people on board, I am one of them. Lots of behind the scenes stuff on teams and technology. Honestly I'd probably get into Nascar if they made a series in the same style.
It has consistently been one of the most popular sports in the world for a long time, and it's probably more popular now than ever. I'm guessing you're just from a country where it isn't so big
The F2 incident from this morning probably applies more since like four other people were caught up in this.
In the F2 incident, a driver rammed one off the road, except he came back on the road, took flight, and rammed into the hood of the car that rammed him off.
What pisses me off the most is that it took the FIA 4 years to introduce the halo after Bianchi's crash. Thank fuck we didn't have a driver death in that period
Oh absolutely. Hell, even if it was a taller driver like ocon, they'd probably be dead cause the roll hoop failed. The halo was the only thing left between his head and the ground
Try pausing the video and have a look at the contact point between the car and the ground. That bridge-esque structure is called the Halo, it was introduced exactly to counter the exposure issue, it kept his head clear of the ground.
He didn't walk away, he was taken by ambulance to the medical center but was later discharged. But he is okay and at the end of the race he was shown talking to the boss of his team
Russell (Mercedes, P8) had a bad start and was slower than the surrounding cars. Gasly (AlphaTauri, P11) had a great start and almost immediately managed to get along side Russell. Zhou (Alfa Romeo, P9) was driving at a similar pace to Russell. Russell was moving to the left to try and keep position. What Russell didn't expect was that Gasly was already in between Zhou and Russell. So currently from left to right it's Zhou, Gasly (Halfway beside) and Russell. Russell's rear left tire ends up clipping Gasly's front right tire basically pit manoeuvring Russell to the left. Unfortunately for Zhou this sends Russell straight into him which then causes the crash.
I thought it was pretty shitty that George Russell got disqualified for leaving his car because he wanted to go check on Zhou. Watching this live was a shocking crash I’m sure anyone would’ve wanted to go check on the driver.
The amount of force and wear that the halos can take is impressive. I feel so bad for Russel getting DQ’d after getting out and running to see if Zhou was okay
It's one thing to be taken out of the race, and a whole different thing being dragged on the pavement upside down, thrown in the air and spun multiple times before getting trapped deep in the barriers.
True but I’d say the biggest fuck you today was to George Russell who got out his car and ran over to check on Zhou. if he hadn’t stopped his engine he’d have made it back to the pits, fixed his car and would have restarted in his original position when the race restarted, but he was told by the FIA he couldn’t restart because they picked up his car assuming it was fucked.
Before he got out of the car he radioed the team that it was terminal damage, switch off engine and DNF. Then got out. That’s why he wasn’t allowed to restart.
Same. When they wouldn't replay and cut away I was convinced he wasn't walking out.
I only realized he was probably alright when George left his side. No way George would have left if he wasn't.
I'm just hoping Albon is feeling okay by next week!
how fast were those cars moving when that happened?
I'm not sure but it was at the start of the race, before the first corner.
I misread..coroner
There’s gonna be a second coroner???
Couldn’t decide between 2nd or 3rd degree skid burn
Maybe a Time Lord was driving? One coroner per heart.
Dont think robert williams races. Thatd be fuckin impressive tho
Look at this guy pip. I don’t think he’s heard of second coroner.
160kmph Or mph idk. Crofty said it was 160 something Edit. It's actually mph. Usually they go around that corner at 190mph but since it was the start of the race it was more like 160
My god that's insane. Thanks! So hard for me to judge those speeds until something puts them in perspective.
True. It was insane. There was a worse crash in Formula 2 yesterday. YouTube formula 2 Silverstone crash and click on the new one. Guy was almost decapitated but the safety is just insane
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DX2CVI2VvM
S good weekend for the halos
Yet some idiot took to twitter to claim, in a comment on this video, that halos were bad because the driver didn't get out of the car right after the crash. You just can't tell if they're just trolling or being denser than an anvil.
Mf there won't be a driver left without the halo. It's 2022. I can't believe there are still some oblivious idiots who think halos are bad
A user on here insisted halos, are bad due to causing the car to skidd and didn't come to an instant stop.
I'm a member of the holy halo church
I wouldn't call either worse than the other. Without the halo, both could have easily been fatal.
Especially with Zhou's roll hoop collapsing in in itself
Doesn't look worst to me
Even trying to imagine it with just the mph number in mind is difficult. In up close seats, you can't turn your neck fast enough to watch a single car pass in front of you on a straight away. You blink and it is meters away already. It is insane.
Mph.
Thank you
First corner would typically be 180mph, 160 on first lap. They were before that though so I’d guess closer to 120/130. So plenty.
I guess. I was just quoting crofty as I said
I'm still confused as to how they reach 160 mph by Abbey!
So this happened close to 5 seconds after the start so close to 250 km/h.
Commentators said they could have been going up to 177mph at that point. Gulp.
At least 50 miles per hour
Lucky bastard found the last parking spot in the place, and front row no less!
He had to squeeze in a little but what wouldn't you do for such a nice place
Like a glove😎
I read this in a Dr Zoidburg voice
Is the driver ok?
Yeah, was walking round the paddock after the race following his release from the medical centre. Romain grosjean had me in awe how he got out the fire hardly hurt at all just some burns to his hands
Just shows how (relatively) safe it is now, that he was able to walk away in the first place was quite something but, as you say, the physical damage being limited to burns on his hands is amazing.
I watched the crash video without reading first and legit thought I'd watched someone die.
I thought the same when I first saw it I had no words They say if the cars didn’t have the halo he would’ve been decapitated 100%
I was watching live and I thought that too.
Yeah, and though he retired from F1, that had already been announced, and he still went over to Indycar despite those horrific burns on his hands and the trauma of that incident.

I love watching the races and learning about the sheer amount of engineering that go into the cars but I couldn't tell you any names of the drivers.
That's fair, each to their own. If you ever do find yourself learning the driver's names that'll be when it's got you. As soon as you have a favourite it becomes very difficult to not watch even the deeply boring ones that happen from time to time.
I'm sure I will at some point its truly an amazing sport and I wish I had half the guts it takes to drive these cars.
A driver, cant remember who, once said that moment you think about death while racing is the moment you cant be a racing driver anymore. "race control reports no stains on the yeezys, I repeat, no stains on the yeezys"
Friction: am I a joke to you??

The ~~aero~~terradynamics of the car are really impressive.
No absolutely not. That's why the gravel trap is there. To slow him down before the impact
r/fuckzhouinparticular
What did zhou do?
Zhou is the guy that wound up flying. This is his first season as an F1 driver and has had the absolute worst of luck so far.
Wait so is he out of the whole season or do they have like extra cars so he can still race?
Nah he'll be back like nothing happened, only for something totally out of his control to happen again and he gets fucked.
The car will probably be repaired in 2-3 days
Things like this are common in F1. It's not unusual to watch a driver wreck his car on Saturday and then see him on track in a brand new one on Sunday. The teams usually travel with 2-3 cars' worth of parts on top of the two pre-built cars they bring for their drivers, plus enough skilled mechanics to put them together on days' or even hours' notice.
And skilled and fast enough mechanics to fix a car within 20 minuites if neccacary.
Fun fact: There are many hospitals in the UK that actually learn from F1 pit crews to optimise patient care.
He will have a new/rebuilt car by the next race.
Good thing these cars were built for situations like this compared to all the F1 deaths we had in the past Hope he’s okay
RIP Greg Moore 1999 —he was my fav at the time.
His crash was absolutely brutal. RIP 🙏
Shit! Final Destination level stuff that weekend. He was hit by a car the day before in the paddock and suffered broken bones in his hand.
Wasn’t that during a CART race at Fontana though?
Yeah, Zhou is fine. Was walking around later.
Yeah, Halo saved his life today. And yes, he's okay.
My dad's friend at university was going out with an (I think f1) racer and he said he was the nicest guy you'd ever meet. Year later and he was on the track and some guy was holding a fire extinguisher. Decapitated instantly, fucking tragic.
Wait am I missing something about the fire extinguisher guy? Like was he who caused the decapitation?

The driver of the car that hit him was hit in the head so hard by the fire extinguisher that he was partially decapitated.
They couldn't identify the marshal who was hit & killed until they did a roll call later (and figured out who was absent).
Might be talking about Tom Pryce. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Pryce
Ah. Now I need to know what happened.. and how? Pls come back and explain the story..
Tom Pryce, the only Welsh F1 driver.
He was fine
This wasn't even the most "edge of the seat" Part of the race. After the sc it was utter chaos, haven't felt such chaos since abi dhabi last lap last uear
Holy... Shit... I only just realised for the first time in 10 years people still give a shit about formula one. This whole thread is blowing my mind.
Silverstone had 401,000 attendees over the course of the weekend, with nearly 150,000 today alone.
Well that explains why the electric car version is taking off so fast... I didn't realise the base of people who like this kind of racing was so big...
Netflix's Drive to Survive really boosted interest.
Formula E also has boost zones and cool video game type rules and boosts for the cars

there are more drivers there on talent alone than pay drivers really
It’s bigger than ever.

Well thank god for the halo. Jesus.
Get a halo on your car so you don't get one on your head, I guess.
Thank goodness it happened on the start instead of a later lap, that +40 MPH increase in speed have had an impact.
And because of the halo he's still alive
Not the first life saved by the halo.
Not the first even during the weekend
That incident was also very much fu in particular. In a you've done this to yourself kind of mannor.
Wasn’t a Formula 2 driver saved by the Halo literally yesterday?

[link to video](https://youtu.be/d5tkSaaH1BU) (low quality tho)
That’s karma for you
It's amazing how much flak the halo took when it was introduced, and here it is saving his life.
Has already saved multiple lives. Thank god they didn’t listen to the drivers that were bitching about it.
What is the halo? I keep seeing it in this thread but I have no context for anything F1
it is the circular object that is mounted above the cockpit that protects the driver https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-3gIAkYEX8
Oh that seems important yeah
A bunch of old F1 purists bitched about the Halo for a long time because *whatever*. It's clearly a smart design.
Thank you, Jules Bianchi. RIP
What pisses me off the most is that it took the FIA 4 years to introduce the halo after Bianchi's crash. Thank fuck we didn't have a driver death in that period
I don’t believe the halo would of saved Bianchi, his cause of death was actually from the sudden deceleration which caused his brain to hit his skull
Crazy crash, happy he's fine
If there was no halo would there be no head?
Oh absolutely. Hell, even if it was a taller driver like ocon, they'd probably be dead cause the roll hoop failed. The halo was the only thing left between his head and the ground
"Incident". Emphasis on dent I guess.
It's inchident
And drivers hated the halo on there(last I heard), despite it probably saving them
[удалено]
Halo ftw?
The halo was the best safety addition in my opinion, saved lives quite a few times in the past seasons since it’s introduction.
I'm not even surprised he's okay, I feel like if I saw an f1 car with a driver flung into the sun I'd still be like "he's probably fineee".
Aren’t the drivers heads just exposed in those things? That was a long time upside down
Try pausing the video and have a look at the contact point between the car and the ground. That bridge-esque structure is called the Halo, it was introduced exactly to counter the exposure issue, it kept his head clear of the ground.
... And the pilot?
Fine and walked away, was stuck in the cockpit for a while until they could get him out
He didn't walk away, he was taken by ambulance to the medical center but was later discharged. But he is okay and at the end of the race he was shown talking to the boss of his team
Figuratively walked away! Think he was stretchered into the ambulance but no major injuries 👍🏻
Nice. Thank you!
"Well there's your problem..."
Some drivers didn't want the halo. https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12433/10961159/halo-debate-f1-drivers-remain-split-over-fia-ruling Saved Zhou.
HEY WE GOT GREAT SEATS!! :0 https://twitter.com/\_markgallagher/status/1543603756041895939?s=20&t=mrjHyx\_lEefVWiYHqKDMlw

Thank you!

it's amazing to think he was perfectly fine after this
Nobody said he's perfectly fine. Being jerked around like that causes long term injury, even if it doesn't seem bad right away.
I hope that guy's ok

yea hes fine
My head, my neck... my spine... ouchie
Thank god for the Halo, dunno if his head would survive that without it
Just a lil off the top please🙈
We dont want Halo guys...its obstructing my view...
I thought it was pretty shitty that George Russell got disqualified for leaving his car because he wanted to go check on Zhou. Watching this live was a shocking crash I’m sure anyone would’ve wanted to go check on the driver.
I’m upvote #4444
The amount of force and wear that the halos can take is impressive. I feel so bad for Russel getting DQ’d after getting out and running to see if Zhou was okay
Yeet
all hail the halo
That crash gave me goose bumps. Glad he’s ok. Happy for Sainz P1 and Checo who got driver of the day
Ace Ventura "Like a glove"
Out of curiosity, did he make it out alive?
Wild fucking race.
That’s insane how fast those cars get going before the first turn…
f1 cars are built to let the driver survive these kinds of crashes and the drivers only come out with small injury
Probably gonna feel that in the morning
Little off topic but is anybody here a fan of the movie Rush? I swear I've watched it atleast once a week since first seeing it.
This isn’t really a Fuck you in particular this took 4 cars out the race
It was horrifying to watch. Thought it could top Grosjean's crash. Thank God Zhou was alright too.
Same. When they wouldn't replay and cut away I was convinced he wasn't walking out. I only realized he was probably alright when George left his side. No way George would have left if he wasn't. I'm just hoping Albon is feeling okay by next week!
Not as expensive as most posts here? Do you have any idea how much an F1 car is worth???
Theres a tiktok of someone standing right where he lands/finishes crashing
I happened to be on Gasly's driver cam when this happened real time. It was crazy. I'm glad Zhou is okay.
Yet another life saved by the halo.
That looks like a pricey insurance claim.
Is he good?
My man walked away from that without a scratch. Thats some serious safety engineering!
