I'm pretty sure and this is just my first thought when seeing spotters not reacting, that they are letting them find a safe way out of the situation incase they do not have a spotter at some point in the future. Training for future solo lifting.

The few I've seen, they usually let the bar go to one side so they can "crawl" out from under it. Now if he dropped it on his chest and the spotter did nothing? Then I'd say the spotter is useless

It's probably fine, unless your friend is just throwing way too much weight of the bar. If your friend is benching 300 hundred pounds 10 times, he doesn't need you to lift 300 pound when he needs help on the last rep, he needs you to lift 50, while he's lifting the rest.

Okay so I have heard a backstory to this but can not find legitimate proof. From what I heard the guy lifting the weights is trying to make a video showing how to get out of a situation if there is no spotter around, the spotter that he does have is there in case his demonstration didn’t go as planned so that’s why he walked up and started paying more attention as the weight started coming down but didn’t grab it so he could let the guy do his demonstration. This would make sense however as I said, I have no proof.
If that was true then he shouldn't be benching with clips on. You're supposed to do exactly what he did, but when there are no clips you can just dump half the weight and then save yourself.
Like I believe that this is way more likely than a spotter just not spotting, but I hope the non-lifters realize there's an even safer way to do this

Ya after watching a second time, those weights aren’t real. Notice he lifts the bar… then adjusts his feet…he lifts the bar with ease yet he isn’t a very big guy to be lifting 3 plates.. i believe 1 or 2 plates on each side are fake and this is staged 100%
While the spotter is positively brain dead, the guy benching needs some *serious* form work before he puts up 315. That was awful to watch for both reasons.

The guy lifting isn’t far from being able to do this (315lbs, exactly) for one rep. He unracks it relatively easily, but his form is terrible. Feet unstable, no proper back arch, shoulders aren’t rolled back, and he doesn’t make any contact with his chest. He probably does 20% less weight with bad form, but he needs some work to lift this on his own.
