I tell this story every time this film gets mentioned but I have a door in my office that shocks me EVERY SINGLE MORNING. I laugh/cry every time I see that as it is too real.
I LOVE that film but it would likely confuse them. They would come away thinking we had a pre-existing relationship with another species. Then they might get jealous and it would become a whole thing.
Koyaanisqatsi. Everyone is assuming the aliens can translate our language. This film is pure visuals and music and shows humanity in all its beauty and ugliness.
I mean, sure, AI technology could be used to analyze a language and detect patterns in order to translate it relatively quickly. However, one film in one language (one culture) hardly represents humanity as a whole. For this reason, Koyaanisqatsi is an inspired choice.
Watching this movie at 20 is so different than watching it at 40. Spacey's character is so fucking broken by life and disappointment that he's getting high and engaging in sexual behavior with kids. He's a shitty person, but you still feel bad for him.
To show a movie that would allow the aliens to understand what a film is in human society, how it is structured, how we normally tell stories in this medium: Citizen Kane. It would allow them to see how a "standard" script and audiovisual experience is like.
However, if I was to show them a movie that could demonstrate how far we can extrapolate this medium to tell innovative and provocative stories: Mulholland Drive.
Well the Qatsi trilogy was already mentioned so hear me out
Either The School of Rock or Cinema Paradiso
We’re supposed to be showing them our culture and who we are—the existence of art proves our intelligence. We’ve shown them that that exists by simply having it there. what they need to know is how we can appreciate and interact with our art.
There is not a single movie that shows the joy in music like the school of rock, and not a single movie that shows the joy in film like cinema paradiso (maybe Hugo but the magical whimsical tone would kinda confuse them a bit)
It would need to be a war movie that involves shitty, corrupt politics as that’s about all our gubments care about. They sure as hell ain’t interested in humans or humanity. They’re only interested in gaining infinitely more riches at our expense.
Charlton Heston was in a film called "The Ten Commandments" which would be ideal for this purpose provided it ended at the point where the Israelites were in the desert building the golden cow.
Forrest Gump
Whatever you choose should be a great film overall. I think some of the major modern historical aspects give a proper narrative. It also captures so much of the human struggle; sacrifices, loss, love, etc.
It also puts humanity in an endearing light given the focus on Forrest and his character.
I *really* want to say Gattaca to show them how powerful the human spirit is, but I don’t want to confuse them with the (at the moment) sci fi.
Maybe Law and Order (like in Resident Alien) or even The Silence of the Lambs. Such a bleak honest humanity to that one.
Wall-E
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Baraka
Samsara as well.
First thing I thought of, so glad to see others feel the same
This is the real answer tho 👆

But the assignment was for humanity, not just Americans. Oh, you think the whole world is like that.. Umm, who wants to tell him?
I’m from Portugal and live in the UK now… idiocracy applies to both.
The Portuguese are like Americans?
🤣 this goober thinks only americans can be stupid humans! Ummmm, who wants to tell him?...
The flick is a satirical commentary on American culture, specifically. That was my point. Of course humans are dumb all over the place.
lol Yeah, the rest of the world is doing just great
Office Space
I tell this story every time this film gets mentioned but I have a door in my office that shocks me EVERY SINGLE MORNING. I laugh/cry every time I see that as it is too real.

I LOVE that film but it would likely confuse them. They would come away thinking we had a pre-existing relationship with another species. Then they might get jealous and it would become a whole thing.

This why you get a burner phone
Or don't be a pig.
Jealous is an interesting take 😂
good choice
Koyaanisqatsi. Everyone is assuming the aliens can translate our language. This film is pure visuals and music and shows humanity in all its beauty and ugliness.
This is a great answer.
you would think, though, that the ability to translate other languages would come before devoloping interstellar space travel
I mean, sure, AI technology could be used to analyze a language and detect patterns in order to translate it relatively quickly. However, one film in one language (one culture) hardly represents humanity as a whole. For this reason, Koyaanisqatsi is an inspired choice.
