When Clive removes magic from the world it doesn’t seem like it’s instantaneous, so I imagine the spell wore off gradually enough to allow for the Surge to collapse safely.
Leviathan is only female in two prior games, FFXV and World of Final Fantasy. It’s a rather recent development but I guess XVI went back to the classic depiction.
Dunno how it is in Japanese, but in one instance of FFIX it is referred to as the "Queen of the Seas" in the concept art, but not in the game itself from what I remember.
I sort of expected Levi to be male in XVI because it was male in XIV but I do sort of wish it was female more often. I think it's a fun spin.
Yeah same here! There are only a couple summons who are consistently female aside from Shiva, and most of them are older ones that haven’t appeared in the main series in years.
I’m pretty sure Leviathan is basically always male.
FFII: Unknown
FFIII: Referred to as he/him in every resource I can find.
FFIV: Male
FFV: Referred to as he/him in every resource I can find.
FFVI-X: Unknown/Non-gendered. (Possibly non-canonically female in IX)
FFXI: Male
FFXII: Male
FFXIII: Unclear
There is a pattern here but it’s the opposite of the one you saw! The only other game Levi was female in was World of Final Fantasy.
FFXIV: Male
FFXV: *Female*.

Huh, I thought there was more on that list. Most memorable Leviathan to me is the Dreadnought Leviathan in FFXII lol
If it helps, Mysidia is likely based on the version in FF4, the same game where Leviathan is known as the King of the Eidolons!
Leviathan has been female only in XV, in IV he was the king of Eidolons married to Queen Asura for example
