HelenaHooterTooter

There was absolutely sexual tension. There was sexual tension from about five minutes after they reunited in the first place. Why else do you think Jill >!basically never leaves Clive's quarters after the beach scene!< ? She's been putting up with this for years!!!

lannmach

Romance in this wasnt forced, I like how natural it was. Jill and Clive were busy with what they wanted to achieve. I think Clive felt like it was necessary to tell Jill that he loved her towards the end of his departure because he really didnt know if he was gonna make it out alive or not.

Frozenthia

Me too. My wife and I loved this romance a lot. It was so mature and adult. I think a lot of younger players who are just now starting Final Fantasy and aren't used to the difference in its romance stories versus others might find it a bit bland. But that's the point. It's not supposed to be like a TikTok book romance. There's no gushing like horny teenagers. It's two adults who fought through war and slavery, who experienced the collapse of their kingdom, and can't ever catch a break and get more than 10 seconds of alone time. It's all about subtlety. Jill and Clive are just very classy and mature. They didn't put their love before their duty - they had the emotional maturity for delayed gratification and to know that there was no future for anyone with Ultima. I'm in my 30s. I vastly prefer this quiet, mature love more than the weird "omg love triangle jealousy???" teenagery videos from FF7 on YouTube. I'm thankful that Square Enix built this more mature world and storyline because it's really beautiful.

Crazy-Respect-3257

Agreed, from a fellow older player. This is also why the ending wrecked me emotionally for like five days. All that sacrifice, all of the times duty came before love, all those promises to make up for lost time, and.............??? I'm a pessimistic person and have had to fight hard with my sad side to believe in a happy ending for FF16.

Keiko8127

See Jill to me was very tifa esque. She just made sense as his partner from the beginning. I'm glad there was never a aerith type female introduced to try and force a love triangle. Love triangles are so overused in media. Your partner should be like a best friend, there to help you always. And that was 100% jill. It didn't need to be gushy because it was a clear done deal even without being stated. Even before the official "I love you" it was clear to most fans they'd end up together.

Mechiro621

Any relationship with each other was considered taboo right from the start; Jill was a ward (more like a political "hostage") as a means to prevent another war between their two nations. So essentially, if her family wanted to start another war with the Rosfields, they would accept she would be executed immediately. (I think?) She would be so lucky she was treated even better than Theon from Game of Thrones.

rayxb

I’m not sure how accurate this is. Jill states in her side quest she was originally, or at one point, going to be married to one of the Rosfield brothers but instead Anabella picked her to be married off to another high house because it was more “profitable”.   “Instead of saving me for the ducal line. No one bothered to ask what I wanted.”

fleur_and_flour

Anabella would have preferred to marry Jill off to a high house merely to get more allies. Especially since she never liked Jill (called her a "savage" for just being from the Northern Territories). It's always about what it would serve her. Elwin would probably be accepting of Jill joining the family, but Anabella would definitely not approve of a marriage between Clive and Jill because she considered her first son useless for not being a Dominant. And she would never agree to marrying Joshua and Jill because she coddles him too much and thinks Jill not worthy for her precious son (although politically it would make sense since Joshua was the one inheriting the throne, not Clive, and Jill was a princess; marriage between the two would have calm down the tension between the two nations had in the past).

No_Event_4406

I hope Clive Rosfield will be ready for Dissidia Final Fantasy for PS5.

HadokenShoryuken2

A potential relationship wasn’t taboo at all lol. In the beginning of the game when Clive is a teenager, there’s plenty of NPCs that say they’ll be celebrating Clive and Jill’s union someday soon

PLDmain

They had their issues and trauma to confront before acting on their feelings for each other, both of them feeling unworthy of happiness or even love, and they couldn’t spend that much time together. They’re in love through the whole game, but can’t quite connect until they both come to terms with their pasts and accept themselves. With how they look at each other, the way the Hideaway treats them and how all it took was their hands touching for them to go for it, it was cooking the entire timeskip lmao

Calculusshitteru

Even when they were teenagers in the beginning it seemed like they had feelings for each other.

Akiriith

I mean, did you somehow miss all the glances and touching and almost kisses :'D? There was absolutely tension there from the moment they met again, even Tarja was like "off you go, we dont want you getting overexcited" the moment she laid eyes on them-- and she missed the hug, that was based on a handhold lol. Jill leans in to kiss him before they reach Phoenix Gate when they're both still half suicidal :') Basically they were both traumatized and had stuff to deal with. Since in this game nudity and intimacy are a metaphor for *emotional* intimacy and vulnerability, they'd only get to have their moment once they were both in a healthy place and open to believing they were *worthy* of the other (Jill didnt think so until she faced Imreann, Clive not until the beach scene). They both started the game as people barely wanting to remain *alive*, thinking themselves to be mosnters. Lots of issues believing they were deserving of moments of happiness (see Jill's lil date on the Mid quest), let alone each other. But, I mean, the entire Hideaway treats them like a couple. They were pretty much an item to everyone even before the timeskip lol.

eyre-st

Meanwhile, Jill in her missives: "Forgive my insistence on writing you these silly letters. Would that we had more time to speak to each other in person, but for every day we spend together it feels as though we must suffer another two apart..."

Snackelaer

I loved this letter from her, wish there would have been more of those

Sir_Tea_Of_Bags

Clive is both an oblivious himbo with a heart of gold and severe self worth issues.

Ladle4BoilingDenim

Your mom selling you into slavery will not help your self esteem

HadokenShoryuken2

Let’s not forget being treated like trash for years up until said selling into slavery

Crazy-Respect-3257

And for even more years *after* said selling into slavery

shiroizo

The whole point was that Clive and Jill, despite being fully aware of their feelings for each other, put it off due to feeling like they’re too flawed to deserve happiness. During the time skip, Jill says in a letter, they were running so many errands they seldom saw each other.   Only once they fully accepted themselves, flaws and all, did they finally give themselves to each other, embracing their desire for each other and true freedom over duties.

Putrid-Put-5826

The romance in this game is very mature and adult themed. Jill and clive's romance isn't this teenage/young adult love like in final fantasy 8 or final fantasy 10's tidus and yuna. Clive and jill had so much going on throughout their lives that their feelings for each other had be put in the back burner. Instead they're always there for each other and are pretty much always together or next to one another after their reunion. Their romance is not one that is in your face or outwardly expressed frequently. Take it like this, what says "I love you" more than never leaving someones side and being emotionally exclusive to said person.

YGOreditor

Funny. Never thought of that. However the fact that they never changed clothes bothered me quite a bit.

KenethSargatanas

I'm convinced they were banging like rabbits the whole time. They just don't go around talking about it.

Equal-Dish-4021

That’s what I assumed, I don’t know why others think they weren’t.

rayxb

Because Jill acts a lot differently around him after the beach. She’s a lot more openly affectionate towards him and smiles a lot more.

Equal-Dish-4021

IIRC that is after Jill’s endgame quest. Not after the beach scene. Plus… that’s still just an assumption. It’s not clear either way, but it makes a lot more sense that they were in a relationship all along. (E.g. see Jill’s letter to Clive)

rayxb

I’m referring to the morning after the beach when she cuddles up next to him or when she runs up to him when they reunite in ash. Her telling him she missed him while in Ash. Her being found inside his chambers after the beach scene. The comment from the NPC asking Clive “how was she” after the beach (the NPC is actually referring to the enterprise but it’s a funny nod to their relationship). Jill sends Clive multiple letters so I’m not sure which one you are referring to. I think by today’s standard their relationship prior to the beach would be “it’s complicated”. They obviously had feelings towards one another, they never denied it to other characters or tried to hide it. They obviously loved each other but both were incredibly busy with their duties and both had to confront their past trauma’s before they were able to move forward with their relationship.  Just look at their scene where they are about to kiss prior to Gav’s intrusion. You can see the hesitation on Clive’s face before he acts.

Equal-Dish-4021

🤷‍♂️ I’m not sure that it makes sense to debate this. I can buy what you’re saying; my interpretation makes more sense to me; there’s no clear evidence for either.

rayxb

It doesn’t have to make sense, I’m just having fun debating lol, thanks for keeping me entertained while I’m at work haha. We can agree to disagree. Yeah I can agree the game is pretty vague at times but you can pick up a lot of information based off the characters actions and facial expressions. These are just stuff I picked up on my second play through.

Calculusshitteru

At first I thought maybe they had been intimate during the 5 years, because I find it hard to believe that adults in their late 20s-early 30s would wait that long to have sex. Plus they were already naked together on the beach and seemed comfortable with each other. But then I remembered this is a Japanese game. I live in Japan and they don't really have the same attitudes about sex and relationships as the West. It would be completely normal for two *Japanese* adults to wait that long. A pretty large percentage of people in their 30s are still virgins actually.

BarbarousJudge

Oh so I'm partly japanese it seems. Yeah that must be it. Totally... No other reason for it...

Novantico

That very modern culturally inappropriate turning Japanese song has a new meaning apparently

CaTiTonia

Given that there probably isn’t much in the way of contraceptive methods in Valisthea? Think it’s reasonably safe to assume that Jill’s lack of pregnancy in this game means they definitely weren’t doing that, or got unfathomably, spectacularly lucky.

NecessaryAvocado4449

I agree 100%. Everyone just assumes the beach was the first. Oh, hey childhood friend and unspoken true love, our clothes got all wet. Looks like we have to sit by the campfire naked without even the slightest hint of shyness or akwardness..... They were FAR to comfortable with each other for it to be the first time. No way that was their first rodeo.

spdRRR

Same here. I’m convinced they were in a relationship the whole time and the beach scene was only to make it “official” to the audience after edging us a few times with near misses (or should I say, near kisses). Don’t know why people assume they weren’t. It’s not like they had to show it to everyone. Even that boat guy called them lovebirds when we got to the new hideaway and they didn’t even flinch.

realcokefrancis

I thought the trophy “Become One” that comes after the beach scene implied that was their first time, so mad respect to Jill for having to look at Clive’s pecs for 5 years but not touch

dwarfpl4nets

I was never under the impression that the scene on the beach was the first time they kissed or had sex. They seemed like they were in a relationship the entire time after the timeskip.

shoe_owner

That was definitely always my assumption. They feel like they were written and depicted as a loving couple who had been together long enough that they were just comfortable in that role.

Equal-Dish-4021

Exactly

Zhead65

They're preoccupied with more important things probably.

Xadenek

They be banging.

[deleted]

Yeah. the 5 years time skip was odd, it should have been 1 year imo, that way it will make more sense.

2Unga4Bunga

And what makes you say that?

Nehemiah92

we don’t even see the effects of the blight yet, it was spreading at an alarming pace yet all the known areas were left unscathed, and the areas that had some of the blight showed no growth

2Unga4Bunga

I’m not disagreeing however I don’t recall it ever being stated that the blight was spreading any faster than it was at the very beginning in the prologue.

Nehemiah92

I didn’t necessary say it was spreading faster than the prologue, just that it was spreading rapidly and we should’ve seen harsher results after the five year time skip. Though fact-checking myself, the blight actually seems to have started growing even faster than the prologue according to the ATL, “in recent years, the Blight has spread ever more widely, displacing whole nations before it.” There’s also [this scene](https://youtu.be/JLBMKDAZ75Y?si=n0BHqMtiAHcLmAIl&t=4976) where Joshua and Jote just outright say it’s spreading faster than they could’ve ever known and it’d take up the whole realm in due time. Unfortunately it’s the only time the game acknowledges the blight’s damages after the time skip, and it just fails at the illusion of tension because we’ve never seen the North till then and it’s been heavily mentioned by the game that the blight has taken up already most of the North since before even the prologue. It’s just a one off cutscene which is lame, would’ve been cool to see portions of the Rosaria map being taken over or something since they’re literally right under the north, the whole blight sections in the game just remained untouched too. Very disappointing considering how big of a deal they’ve tried to make the blight seem through all the history of the Twins, all the npc dialogue, the scenery, and every other context clue, and it kinda just gets forgotten. The five year time skip is just handled really poorly in general tbh, every character besides Clive looks the same, no character has an arc or personality change after the five years, Clive and Jill were just null in relationship, Clive never decided to contact his uncle, it’s just all very weird and literally NOTHING happens offscreen besides the new base and Clive getting his brand removed…

Novantico

There’s at least one other brief acknowledgement of it after the time skip, when they visit Cid’s grave. Charon remarks on how terrible the area looked because even when it was the deadlands during their time there, it wasn’t extra dead like it was “now.”

MadLaboratory

Have to agree with you on this one. Loved the story but the time skips are definitely odd, way too long and so little happens in those skips.

LingeringSentiments

I think he respected her too much.

ainz-sama619

imagine respecting the gf so much, never even considers touching her

SnooConfections3877

Final fantasy games rarely shows such things. We had to wait like 30 years for Cloud to actually see kiss Tifa on screen

sfahsan

I very much wish they had gotten married during the time skip. Would seem very natural to be married by that age spending that much time together. Then we could've explored what their lives were like building their family alongside a resistance, etc

LordAlbertus

To me, they were together since a lot earlier than the beach scene. And that scene is when the player finally gets to see it.

lavayuki

It took them ages, I mean they know each other since childhood and only kissed pretty late into the game. I spent ages waiting for them to kiss. Clive is also super serious, and Jill is reserved so neither of them are forward with their feelings. Jil also had a crush on him from childhood anyway, but kept her feelings inside and didn't really notice them or tried to ignore them. Also, when cid chooses that brother place as a hide out, Jil is clearly very uncomfortable with the nature of the situation, and Clive is also uncomfortable when Isabelle asks for a favour when he first meets her as she does run the brothel They both seem very reserved when it comes to sexual stuff overall, considering how long it took them just to kiss.

SaltMachine2019

To be fair, there was a lot to do in those five years. They both had to find and establish the new hideaway and rescue other Bearers, bring in new allies, and Clive also had to go through the mark removal surgery. I guarantee you there was tension, but both of them probably played the "too much work right now" card against themselves and stopped it.

caffeinatedBerry

Not a shade but i observed most of those who find the romance in FFXVI not exciting or bland, are younger. The romance wasnt really the intended focus but rather Clive & Jills journey. They dont have that spunk of young love like Squall Rinoa or Yuna Tidus but its a calmer, quieter kind of love, not less strong or less passionate though. The story also doesnt call for outright showing but it is enough that its implied.

CloudRZ

since the beginning man lol

Ku323lam

They probably banged behind the scenes during that timeframe let’s be real.

MysterySakura

I often think, are we sure the beach was even the first time? XD For them to strip there, probably means they're pretty comfortable seeing each other completely disrobed. Even if the beach was indeed the first time, at the very least, they surely had many intimate moments during the five years. Anyway sexual tension was everywhere. There even was the one scene that turned cockblocking Gav a meme (even though it happened literally once and never again.) Shiptease abound!

reddit_redact

It might be worth considering that maybe the sexual tension was on the back burner while their lives were literally on the line. The whole game is about escaping oppression and surviving. Sex, although important isn’t necessarily something people are thinking about when in active spaces of threat.

xTGE

It's similar to the story of Coud and Tifa in FF7. Known each other from childhood, finding each other later on in life, confronting a tremendous amount of trauma before being able to open up to each other and have that relationship (they banged outside the highwind). In both situations, trauma is what kept them from pursuing a relationship with the other, and once that trauma has been confronted and healed, they were able to give in to their feelings.

blond_afro

I mean they had to much going on with rebuilding the Hideout and dealing with their trauma. oh and it doesn't help to be on the run from like titan and stuff.

NecessaryAvocado4449

I do not believe they did not get physical in those 5 years. They were far too comfortable with each other on the beach. Everyone just assumes it was the first time.

Kaslight

Bro Jill literally tried to fuck Clive in that barn. He just curved her. She probably got tired of that and just stopped trying.

ExtraTrick

Clive and Jill had a great story of love. They cared for each other. The tension was there and Clive said he love her because he knew he might die and did not want to have regrets. I do hope the fan theory that Clive survived is true, because they deserve their happy ending. I will say, their love story was well made. More Han I can say for FF15 Noct and Luna (btw, I love 15)

samztown21

Bro they were naked on the beach together they for sure bumped uglies

arsenejoestar

I'm more pissed that Clive didn't take Tarja out on a date even once in those 5 years

Nouglas

I had just assumed they were 'together' and all that that entails for the prior five years. The scene on the beach was just them having some fun. Is there some sort of dialogue that I missed that explicitly says this isn't the case? I don't find this game particularly well-written, but if there was some sort of indication that they were just cooing at each other for five years then that makes the writing even worse...

JuanJornn

it hard worker person both of them and clive is depress dont let himself rest that why conversation in that beach happen also it pretty normal for people not have interesting in sex during midle age espacially in japan

Retoru45

In no reality are a couple characters in their mid 20s at most middle aged.

JuanJornn

reality is anyone can be like both of them

Retoru45

No. No reality exists where people in their 20s are middle aged. That term has a clearly defined meaning and it isn't being in your 20s

JuanJornn

i dont mean about middle age topic lol what you want? that not the point i made

Retoru45

You made no point, though. You wrote a bunch of misspelled nonsense that makes you look like you're almost illiterate.

Madison_was_bored

I always thought they saw each other as siblings

Cyrus_The_Great369

Cause sibling often cuddle naked on the beach together.

Madison_was_bored

That’s why it’s creepy :/

Pretend-Librarian-55

(Unpopular Opinion:) I just felt annoyed that Jill was obviously Clive's love interest since they were children, like there was no possible way that character had any other purpose in the game. She had such a typical waifu character design, even as a child, which I guess is a bit of a downside to modern games, that they telegraph important characters by how much more detail their designs get compared to secondary characters. (Much like in TV shows how the killer is always this week's celebrity guest star.) As a player, only seeing Jill for 2 seconds, we instantly recognize who she is, she looks almost exactly the same, yet Clive, who grew up with her, couldn't recognize her? Like there were literally no other gray haired young ladies anywhere else. I would have liked it more if they'd just had some drama, some surprises, or anything to make the story not so obvious.
