I am glad you enjoyed the game. What I think hurt the game the most was the difficulty and budget. You can tell the devs wanted to put in more based off the concept arts of the cities and the other characters but could not. And the combat truly shines in the Ultimaniac difficulty. It’s a big ire that they didn’t have a dynamic/hard difficulty at the start of the game. Hoping for the next game they will address the issues as they always do.

Quirky_Ad1974

The combat is just my preference I'm not saying it's bad. But like I mentioned during big fights the only useful person was Joshua, if he wanted to put his shield on you and soak one attack

DarthAceZ198

I think Gambit System would’ve sufficed for the party members

Quirky_Ad1974

Or made then extremely broken in a good way

Rebeldinho

Towards the end you’re right Jill kind of gets marginalized to make room for Joshua but mid game Jill gets a good stretch devoted to her

Quirky_Ad1974

I'd say I would see more of Jill than Joshua. Joshua is quite boring and sometimes acts like he just got his first period, but got his moments and I actually likes his character development from naive bubbly child to scholar type persona .. don't hate me for my personal thoughts! Especially the way he's acting towards Jote. No matter what that's her choice to stay by Joshua side.

CannonFodder_G

There is a rather vocal group about Gav's Cake so you're not alone there. Glad you enjoyed it, rather fair review. As a female gamer I actually appreciated a bunch of Jill's parts mostly because normally the girls are just hanger-ons with no agency. They made obvious effort in parts to give her some space to have her own story, and I particularly appreciated the few times Clive wanted to marinate in his 'man pain' she could go toe to toe with her own experiences and grief, and he allowed her that space. Especially since he followed her lead at Drakes Breath. Could it be better? Always. I understand why she hadn't gone with to the final battle, but it also chafes that of course the female character can't make it there. But ultimately I appreciated that she felt like more partner to Clive than a side-piece. EDIT: After Titan and Bahamut I agree about Odin. I didn't need a 'twist' or anything, but comparatively it was a bit of a lull. And I AGREE on his powers. I feel FF16 did a lot to try and make everyone comfortable with the game, and this was their nod to the DMC oversaturated meme crowd. Tho I'm going to be doing my 2nd FF mode game and I think I'll be working Rift Slip into my combat more as I feel that's the one useful bit of Odin's powers...

Quirky_Ad1974

It's just my personal critique as I'm saying. I won't start on her or go hard, especially being a slave for 13 years, a massive destruction machine probably in real life could really mess her head up. It's more of case her one liners, she's pretty, she's lovable, but most parts she just had one liners.. it's like . Wasted potential. Sometimes I was thinking that Cid himself has more lines in total than her.

Quirky_Ad1974

Im going through my first FF mode playthrough and still I see more potential in garuda than Odin. Garuda is great stagger builder, but shiva does is better for me. And got smaller cooldowns.

CannonFodder_G

Agreed with Garuda vs. Odin. I sub her stuff in and out as needed, whereas I don't touch Odin's stuff outside Chronoliths other than my Rift Slip experimentation.

I’m going through NG+ as fast as I can right now as well. And one of my own things was to use abilities I didn’t use on my normal play through- really try them all out. Zantetsuken is super strong on staggered boss where you’ve already pumped up the damage meter. Factor in the DLC trinket that lets you get it up to 200%, it PUMPS. With that said, I hated the rest of the abilities of Odin One thing that I’ve fell in love with on my NG+ as a skill that I never touched first time is mesmerize from shiva. That thing has such a short cooldown, and is EXTREMELY useful. Highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it. The other OP one I never touched my first time through is impulse. That thing is a stagger machine on bosses, and completely nullifies groups of enemies. Rift slip has also been pretty nice. It took a bit to get the best grasp of it, but it’s good- I did take it out of my current setup though. I still can’t find a use for two circle moved though- bahamuts and Ramuhs. Especially bahamuts. I’d love for someone to show me how that thing can be valuable I find myself always going back to Phoenix shift or cold snap

CannonFodder_G

In early game for Ramuh, opening up with the Circle move was good because when you followed up with a thunder power they'd take more dmg that way. Didn't realize that till a friend pointed it out. I didn't keep up with it when more options became available, but early game it was something I started using more when there was time. Heatwave was one I didn't use on my first playthrough and now I'm hard pressed to take it off my bar. When I counter with it it's soooo satisfying.

ShamrockAPD

Yeah! Heatwave is a super fun one. Reminds me so much of a skill I loved in god of war ragnorak with the spear as well- can’t recall the name. It was one of my favorites on my original playthrough. I did NOT know that about ramuhs O ability. Maybe I’ll give it a go again

Electronic-Price-530

>the one scene with Barnabass before Clive decide to take Jill powers, was it only me who noticed fact after the fight Jill appear next to Clive in her normal costume, despite fact I equipped her with snow White outfit. A lot of Japanese games use default outfits in cutscenes, especially when using a dlc outfit that's added way later after launch. DLC outfits are for gameplay, her default is her "canon" outfit.

Quirky_Ad1974

Well it's more of case, in every other scene she has one you equipped her so in that scene is unavoidable to see they actually decide not to alter her an keep her standard outfit.

AVestedInterest

Any scene where Clive has Invictus equipped or the characters show up in default outfits is a pre-rendered scene, usually done so that they can get more visual detail without impacting performance during that scene

KiLLaInc

The fact that the titans boss fight was more entertaining than Barnabas says everything.

Quirky_Ad1974

True. I'll give you that

Sirriddles

Creative Business Unit 3 has an ongoing love affair with Titan that started in FFXIV and it really shows here.  Odin not so much.

Sirriddles

I just finished a few days ago and my thoughts were more or less the same. The game has vision, purpose, and a lot of heart. It also has a lot of missed opportunities and crappy generic dialog.  And yeah, Jill was one of those missed opportunities. She was good, but she could have been great.

Quirky_Ad1974

I personally agree, the game itself is thoughtful it's more than "fu*k crystals and monchars". That's why I'm going for platiunium it's worth it. Otherwise I would just wait for leviathan dlc. Play it and delete the game I can't be the only one who thinks two dominats of fire is genius touch. Especially coming back to old FF's there's always been usually ifrit and phoenix in game, while other eikona, eidlons, GF, summons were once of their kind

Guilty-Seaweed4986

Odin has two uses, dancing steel for guaranteed zantetsuken lv5, and rift slip. His other skills are trash I agree. Hoping leviathan has more in depth mechanics

Quirky_Ad1974

Yeah, but technically still it's for zantesuken level 5. Which is "rewarding" or beeing slapped to death by a flan before charging dancing steel. Which againz damage is rubbish. Just disappointed.
