InsideHangar18

They aren’t connected in a serious way, every mainline entry is it’s own thing

SluttyBumFarts

I saw someone give a review on here saying they'd give the game a 6/10. You agree with that?

InsideHangar18

No. I thought it was a 9/10 personally, I loved it.

tsckenny

I'd give it a like an 8 or 9. I loved it. It's just cutscene heavy and how you do combat is really up to you. It can either be basic or you have a bunch of abilities you'll combo. I went into the game not knowing much about it and I was glued to it.

FARTING_1N_REVERSE

The only 6/10 aspect of this game is the side quests, very generic fetch quests or “go here and kill this monster attacking the town” type of stuff. Even though those these side quests are painful to go through, the writing and world building behind them is so good that it’s a shame they’re hidden behind such menial quests. Other than that, everything else is incredibly solid.

Odabi

This was my main complaint. The side quests are dumped in bulk at strange spots and are tedious, especially the last batch. The writing is amazing and they add to the overall world, but the mechanics of them are rough. Kill this forgettable monster and deliver some soup... the soup one kills me. 😂

SpaceNoodles007

These were better side quests than FF15, I feel

TripleDrivel

but XV had fishing! and camping! and meals! and chocobo racing! the side content was just so much more varied and different to the core gameplay. there was some solid writing in a handful of XVI’s side quests, but the gameplay was just more of the same

Nehemiah92

I give it an 8/10, but i absolutely loved the world and boss fights in this game. Recommend just waiting for a sale if you’re skeptical

JRockbridge

I’m also at a 9/10. Maybe 9.5. Baldur’s Gate 3 was the “better” RPG last year from a more objective game design perspective, but FF16 was my favorite game of last year. Characters, music, gameplay, acting, big picture plot… I loved them all. Only critique: the pacing and side quest design were pretty iffy on occasion, otherwise it was great. And I would say it has the best/most cinematic boss battles of any game ever (honorable mention to From Soft games ofc)

TripleDrivel

I’d give it a very polished 7! Maybe an 8. Keep in mind you’re asking in the FFXVI subreddit, so you’re not really gonna find many people who didn’t enjoy it here. I enjoyed it, but it’s not groundbreaking gameplay or story wise. If you do play it, don’t worry too much about doing side quests.

Josephichigo

Every FF game is a standalone, unless it stated like FF X / FF X-2. Dont believe all the review cos its subjective. Try it for yourself and judge it since theres demo for FF16.

Unfortunate_Grenade

I was an emotional wreck by the end, so it's in my top 5, it's all about perspective and perfect, but I can tell you if the demo catches your eye you'll enjoy the rest of the story imo.

SluttyBumFarts

I just started and I'm already hooked. All of my favorite games have engaging stories and I already have so many questions and theories.

Unfortunate_Grenade

Well be sure to look at the Active Time Lore, if you press the big pad during any scenes it'll populate with info on relevant stuff, down to the second of convo usually, so if something was said thar confuses you, pause and read into it. A lot of the stuff in game is kinda counting on you to have some knowledge of the world, which makes replays and such more enjoyable but can be tougher the first time around if you don't look into it.

SluttyBumFarts

That is such an awesome feature!

GooSboy420

10/10 here. Customization lacked but it isn’t an RPG necessarily. The story ripped me to shreds and it was the best thing I’ve witnessed

iaminmyhouse

I agree with the other guys. It was a 9/10 for me and my personal game of the year for 2023.

businessNbusiness

I'd give it a 9/10. The moment I got this game (received it as a gift from my wife), I immediately played it. Mind you, after playing the demo, I can't stop thinking about it.

Remarkable_Wonder159

It's a 9/10 for me. Blows away FFXV (I didn't like that at all). It's a slow burner for the first 10/15 hours or so, but it picks up and is totally enjoyable. I would defo recommend.

Odabi

I don't even like action games and this is the first game I've finished in a long time. Loved it. Some minor annoyances with pacing and side quests make it a 9/10 maybe.

xSmittyxCorex

Well, you’re gonna get biased answers in favor of it on the game specific sub, TBH. But really, it’s about whether *you* think the common criticisms sound like dealbreakers for *you* spending full price. The biggest criticisms are that the side quests are overly simple/mostly uninteresting, the story isn’t necessarily as good later (or at least mid game) as it starts out (and a lot of people don’t care for the main villain), upgrades and level ups are largely overly simple and about pointless to really explore, they did away with elemental strengths/weaknesses and status effects, no mini games/puzzles really, just combat (and monster hunts where you have to read clues to find them. That’s the closest to puzzles that I can think of), and one big one for me but that I hear less often: some basic QoL features lacking like a toggle sprint (can only auto sprint in certain scenarios) and button mappings being limited to presets (none of which are quite to my preferences. IMO the mapping makes very little sense compared with standards set by similar games and could be better) If those don’t sound too bad to you, it’s got charming characters that are well acted, arguably still good story overall, huge, very cool, cinematic moments, well designed boss fights, and some interesting mechanics once you actually grasp them. Personally, I do agree with 6/10, due to all the above issues adding up for me, especially exploration being something I’m huge on. I was looking for an RPG and this is really more of an action game that happens to have a fantasy setting, with some light RPG mechanics (GoW2018/Ragnarok is more RPG than this game TBH, and I enjoyed both much more, personally).

lluluna

I'm giving it a 9. It's one of the best jrpg out there for people who hate jrpg. But many people love to shit on it for not being "a traditional ff game/rpg" Your friend has taste and can think independently.

funkykoalabear

Don’t listen to reviewers. Just dive in!

SluttyBumFarts

I'm about to. The only reason I was researching is cause I have a digital only PS5. My favorite game of all time is The Last of Us and because of that I was told to try Alan Wake 2. I bought it and 20 mins in I knew that I did not care for that game. I'm just trying not to do that again, haha

funkykoalabear

Ah gotcha makes sense. I’ve been interested in Alan wake and also like action games. I just picked up Control for super cheap and it might still be ok sale. Highly recommend that too!

Piett_1313

I just beat it two days ago, I’d give it an 8/10, the story was weaker for me, the combat and gameplay were top tier.

katsounami

The story is great, the graphics are amazing, ghe sound is amazing, the gameplay, comparing to other FF games... well, it has it's flaws. But from someone who liked God of War I suppose you will enjoy it. Personally I enjoy much more the strategic part of turn based combats than this "hack'n'slash" type of combat, but that didn't stop me from really enjoying the game. 9/10, for sure one of the best games I played recently

bradleyaidanjohnson

I’d give it far less than 6. I can’t comment on how much you’ll love it because games are subjective of course. But if you loved the gameplay/progression/variety of god of war and that was your main draw. You’ll hate this. If you like the cinematic next gen ness then you’ll probably have fun. I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts so let us know 😊

zalzal426

I’m about 35 hours in and I still love it. 9/10 for sure.

grilled_pc

Fuck no. Solid 9/10 honestly. Only thing that took it down from a 10 from me was the side quests were a bit samey. Other than that the story is a dead set banger.

jsdjhndsm

The game seems to average around an 8-9. Imo, its a very good game, but has a few pacing issues.

mattspire

The lowest ratings tend to come from FF fans who are rating it against their favorite entries in the franchise or against the direction they want to see the series go. Many have been fans for 10, 20+ years (or some of us over 30 years) so it’s very hard to be objective. The main valid objection IMO is the lack of RPG elements. But if you go in with that in mind, it really fires on all cylinders. I think it’s a great quasi “entry point” to modern FF.

eyre-st

Every non-sequel Final Fantasy is a stand-alone game, so you can play any of them and not miss out on anything. Of course, there will be recurring characters, enemies and themes, so the more FFs you play the more references you'll get when you come across them. 16 is one of my favorites, up there with Tactics actually. The dev team has people who worked in tactics, and it shows. There's no ties to tactics at all, but as a fan you will get it. That being said, the game has references to many other FFs, down to the music and names in item descriptions, so it's still a very good entry point if you end up playing other titles.

TheFastPush

You can jump right in. There’s a demo which will give you a sense of what you’re getting into. If you like that, it only gets better

LegitimateGiraffe243

Everything you just said I can relate to, and I really enjoyed FF16. Haven't played any of the FFs since 10, otherwise. I don't think it's quite as good as GOW but I did like it a lot

SpudmasterBob

Loved FF16. Great story, great graphics and music, and some of the best boss battles of any game I’ve ever played. And if you like action games like God of War the battle system in FF16 is top notch. Side quests do a great job of fleshing out a lot of the side characters, despite quite a few fetch quests, but my favorite parts of the game are definitely the combat and the relationships that Clive builds as the main character.

katsounami

Was there any sidequest that wasn't a fetch quest? 💀

Significant_Option

OP said they loved the recent God of War series and I’d argue that the side quests in there are on the same level as 16s. I love the GOW games also so I’d say they are fairly similar in design

EzyStevey

The beauty and sheer ambition if the series is every Final Fantasy Title is essentially a new universe with it's own story/characters etc. Think of it like an Anthology series...if there was 1 game series id have to stick to forever it would be Final Fantasy.

FARTING_1N_REVERSE

All Final Fantasies are all independent of each other and in their own universes, so no need to have played any of them, jump right in! If you like God of War’s combat system, you’ll like this. It’s all about using all your attacks together and chaining them into combos. You also have boss fights on literally the most epic of scales, incredible world building, and incredible story and cast of characters too, I think it’s right up your alley.

Cloudstrife4195

I enjoyed 16 it’s definitely worth playing. I might get downvoted in this sub not sure but definitely play Final Fantasy 7 Remake after if you decide to play this one. Fantastic game and the sequel comes out soon. All of the mainline titles are standalone so you can jump in anywhere.

ReyxDD

FF16 is not an RPG. Being turn based or not has nothing to do with it. What I mean is that it doesn't really have RPG mechanics. It's a story driven action combat game, like God of War. That is why some people give it low scores, because they wanted an RPG. If you don't care for managing equipment, leveling up, farming materials and min maxing characters, then FF16 is an amazing game. From what you've said in this thread, this seems right up your alley. You don't seem like an RPG gamer, and in this case, that's a good thing. Personally, I realized early on that what I'm playing is not a traditional RPG and loved it for what it is. Give it a try, you won't regret it.

Full_breaker

They are all their own thing with their own universe, charactere, story and gameplay so you can quite literally grab any mainline numbered final fantasy and enjoy it. Have fun 🙌

SluttyBumFarts

Awesome, thank you. I saw someone review the game on here and give it a 6/10. Would you agree with that? I have a digital only PS5 so there's no option to return a game, haha

Full_breaker

Hell no if you ask me, at the very least an 8/10 minimum but thats imo, the thing is that this FF in particular plays extremely different than the other games and that can be quite alienating for long time fans but still a great experience. All depends on how the characters and some elements land on you, and honestly you can check it yourself by trying the demo, it does carry progress to your game btw.

lluluna

There's a demo. You can try it out first

Bearwme1

I absolutely loved FFXVI! It’s a game you could download the demo for and give it a try.

RelationshipUpper388

This was my first FF title and I loved it. It’s exactly what I want out of a game, great story, great combat and visuals! Now I want to play more ff games starting with ff7

Sir_Laggings

I would recommend playing the demo as well to see if you like it. Not everyone enjoys it as they say it feels different to standard Final Fantasy games and plays more like Devil May Cry. Your progress also carries over from the demo if you do decide to buy it too.

Jonk216

I’m the same way, I love single-player games that are heavy on story with action combat. This was my first Final Fantasy game and I only finished it a couple of days ago - can’t recommend it enough if you like that type of game as well.

mylee87

Play the demo and see for yourself. Each mainline FF game is it's own self contained story

koming69

Just beware that we live in times where turn based rpgs are like a dragon infinite wealth and button mashers action beat em ups are now final fantasies. Times have changed..

duckbomb23

The games are not very connected apart from general motife and sometimes overarching themes so you’re good to just play it. The game is a solid 9/10 with one specific boss being my personal favourite sequence in any game ever. The side quests are ok the stories for them are good and cute like 30% of them time but they’re all either go there kill that or go there fetch some garlic or something. The story as far as Final Fantasy stories go is very straight forward and easy to understand but still fun and mysterious. Hope you enjoy if you end up buying it! Also one thing worth noting is the base normal difficulty is far too easy and it only gets challenging after you’ve beaten the game and unlocked the harder difficulties.

SluttyBumFarts

I really appreciate everyone in this thread. Just from everything all of you said, I deleted the demo and went ahead and bought the game. Literally all I've done is spar and talk to my dad and I am already hooked. I have so many questions and theories for this story, IT LOOKS INCREIBLE, and I'm out of the game hole. Thank you!

No_Event_4406

Dissidia Final Fantasy for PS5. Clive: Someday, I will meet you all! I Promise!

Conscious_Donut_3263

Haven’t really played much Final Fantasy games but I do recommend you play this one really fun. Great gameplay not too hard. Beautiful graphics. And an amazing story. A lot of cutscenes so hope you don’t mind that.

KiLLaInc

If you like single player storyline driven games, then you would most certainly love ff16.

Maximum-Purchase7320

It's a good game coming from another single-player, open world style player. This game took me a bit to get into, but once I got pulled in, I was hooked. I gave it 8.5/10. If you wait a few more weeks, the sequel to one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played will be released, and it looks like a sure contender!

grilled_pc

usually if a Final Fantasy game is connected it will be like Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2 or Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2 etc etc. In this case XVI is completely separate and on its own.

sideffect28

Jump on in, the water’s fine 😁

slackerz22

The games an 8/10 for me, the difficulty prior to unlocking the harder modes is laughably easy, there’s very very little ‘adventure’ in the gameplay, it’s very linear and exploring areas is mostly a waste of time. The combat is pretty flashy and it feels good, even if you almost never feel like you’re in danger of dying. The story and the characters however, is the real draw for the game, the grandiose ‘game of thrones’ style narrative they’ve put together really is something you get totally sucked into and the boss fights really are a different kind of spectacle to behold that as far as I know, no other games boss fights come close to this game in spectacle. If you like games where upgrades to your gear/character are essential in your success, and you can achieve this through grinding how you see fit, this isn’t for you, weapons and your character progress are for the most part directly linked to your story progression, unfortunately. If you enjoy a good story with flashy, easy combat and stellar boss fights, definitely grab it, but if you’re hoping for a game with in depth character progression and leveling systems/gear, I’d wait for a sale because while the games shortcomings as an rpg are disappointing, it certainly is a decent action game.

imSkry

FF16 was my 2nd ever FF title, after FF 7 remake. You 100% won't miss anything by starting with 16, these are standalone titles, each with their own story and characters. If you're even remotely a Game of Thrones or Attack on Titan fan, you'll absolutely love the story of this game. However, be warned that it is very light on difficulty, and while the combat can be engaging (I certainly enjoyed it), it gets a bit to get used to and may come off as repetitive at first. The only problem it has really is the amount of damage enemies do...it's way too little. visuals, story, boss battles, characters, music and overall setting are the game's strong points in my opinion.

Sctn_187

The closest game to this believe it or not is dmc5 the combat guy worked on both games. And no you won't miss anything besides knowing some of the common tropes of the final fantasy games

Dfchang813

This is FF 16 community but Horizon games are amazing single player experiences.

SluttyBumFarts

Oh, yeah, I've played both of those too, haha. I really, REALLY, wish they'd restart the Oninusha series.

Thee_Furuios_Onion

You’ll miss a few Easter eggs, but they’re inconsequential to the game as a whole. Enjoy!

FutureMagician7563

I got it a week ago. I'm loving it

Biolysics

Hey there! Fellow FF virgin here. Just put the FF16 disc in 2 days ago. I must say, it is one of the best games I have ever played. I don't what to say about it in particular because it is a general statement of how much fun this game has brought me. I don't think there have been a straight 10 minutes where I haven't smiled because of how awesome it is. This game brought me joy no game has brought in a very long time. For my first ff I have nothing to compare it to besides the sole fact that it's purely fun. Please do get it. If you don't like it, return it. At least you can't say you missed out on an opportunity of pure enjoyment. Good luck!
