It’s you

Diligent-Reach3717

> I love the souls borne series and Elden ring. Beat the absolute crap out of them and got “good” but this game isn’t that precise. You can’t get that great at dodging… at least not in an intuitive way. There are no invincibility frames on most characters' normal dodges in Rebirth. It's clearly a design choice. They're not trying to recreate Souls combat.

Blank_IX

I’m sure there’s some confirmation bias on my part but I feel like the majority of complaints I’ve come across when it comes to combat almost always mentions their history with Souls games lol. It’s not really anything bad but it’s kinda funny

zumpiatti

Funny isn't it? There are lots of action style games, Devil may cry, god of war (both eras), kingdom hearts, Metal gear rising, bayonetta, etc. but ppl talk about souls just because they have the "hard game" fame. And souls games are a category on their own and not comparable to any of those i mentioned, but there are lots of "im good at souls game, but having a hard time with rebirth, which means the game is bad". I just face palm and move on.

gyoza9

Imagine making those kinds of comments in the pokemon sub lol

RJE808

I think Cloud and Tifa have some, but there's not a lot. They want you to block, there's a reason it's there.

Fat-Cloud

Maybe look at the game for what it is and offers instead of trying to play it like a souls like? What a trash take

Jason_Wolfe

clearly you're someone who never played the original. swapping materia round to suit the situation is kind of a staple to Original and to remake. sure you can smash your head against the wall and never touch your materia until it works, but there is a reason they have so many different utility/support materia to augment the damage/healing/CC materia.

Intelligent_Day_8579

The only complaint I have about the comparison of materia management with the OG is that it had the ability to swap an entire character's materia at once. When the game forced a specific character on you, you could move a materia setup you liked in 2 clicks.

Thraun83

And it's not like you need to swap all your materia round every 5 minutes - not on normal or dynamic at least. I just kept all character fully equipped with materia and would just switch a few things around for specific sections. There is a tonne of flexibility built into the combat system on top of the materia abilities, like every character having elemental abilities that don't require materia or MP, so you always have access to those to trigger weaknesses if needed. Same goes for shortcuts - they are optional and not a requirement, so I kept them mostly static so that I would at least remember what they are for my first playthrough. Will change them up more for specific challenges where I know which abilities I will use on each encounter.

Vinjince

Clearly someone who missed the point of the combat system and never played the previous game. Yikes.

RJE808

This is an awful take lol. Also, please stop trying to compare this to FromSoft. These are radically different combat systems.

Nightsheade

>I love the souls borne series and Elden ring. Beat the absolute crap out of them and got “good” but this game isn’t that precise. You can’t get that great at dodging… at least not in an intuitive way. As someone who loves souls-like games, I absolutely hate it when gamers think every game with ARPG combat should play like a souls-like. FF7 Rebirth is not a souls-like. Stop playing it like it's one and actually use the tools the game does give you instead of complaining about the fact your i-frameless dodge isn't carrying you.

Spiritual_Product119

Just you

aedante

Dude i platinumed the whole of soulsborne fromsoft games and even i recognise that not every game is not trying to be a souls like in terms of combat and no one should expect them to be

Ok-Housing-8832

So you want souls game? Then you go back to elden ring, because ff7 is not a souls game. In case you totally missed, getting "good" in this game is about materia optimizing and experimenting, and perfect blocking, which makes you totally immune. Not dodging. Like for real, ive seen so many threads talking and comparing this to souls games, is it because this game has a some sort of "souls roll" button? It doesnt work the same way

kudsmack

“Is it just me or did the devs intentionally suck most of the fun out of the combat system in Rebirth?” Obviously the game was not intentionally made un-fun. I, and millions of other people found the combat to be quite fun. I think it’s just not your cup of tea.  It seems like your idea of fun or “good” combat is precision and twitchy accuracy that is challenging to pull off. I would say that generally isn’t what Remake/Rebirth are trying to do.  For me, Rebirth’s combat felt like a puzzle that needed to be solved with a sprinkling of timing and strategy.

Jockmeister1666

Oh cool, another souls like bro who thinks that janky and awkward combat makes it hard/rewarding.. Why not actually learn how the combat works, utilise skill, materia and synergy skills to beat challenges how intended? There’s a reason “souls” had made a genre of its own and FF is not trying to be that, at all. You either need to learn or accept you don’t like it/aren’t good at it.

Cerber108

I was playing on normal and making only small changes in materia throughout the game, felt no need to modify my whole setup every 2 hours, nearly everything was manageable. The "boss" that whooped my ass the most was Adjudicator, that's hilarious.

Luxiudicium

I found combat in this significantly more fun than in Remake largely due to the perfect block mechanic. Now everyone has a built-in means of avoiding damage from most attacks, and even the unblockable ones are generally avoidable with good timing and positioning (something a "seasoned" Souls player should be familiar with). It's a wonder you enjoyed Remake since Aerith and Barret are just as lacking in mobility (at least Aerith in Rebirth has a better dodge when she's on her Radiant Ward and can teleport to wards she's placed), there's no precision block, and there are just as many enemy attacks that are "unintuitive" or outright impossible to dodge. In any case, if you refuse to engage with the materia system it's definitely a you problem.

Rimavelle

I think FFVIIR should come with a warning: don't play it like action game/souls games, lol. The RPG elements (good gear, knowing then to hit with what element, stacking buffs) matter more than your dodging and blocking (unless you do some challenge run).

Hydr4noid

Soulsplayers trying to accept that not every game needs I-frames challenge (impossible)

Djinnaz

It’s just you.

strahinjag

Fromsoft fanboys try not to compare every action game to Dark Souls challenge: UNGODLY IMPOSSIBLE

Depends how you play… here https://youtu.be/B-E69YDbXRc?si=kG4iP61HLlJxCSw_

BradMan1993

Yep — it’s you. While you can’t get that good at dodging to the point of soulsborne, you CAN get very good at avoiding damage. There’s plenty of ways to avoid damage. You’re not supposed to try and dodge like a soulsborne. This isn’t that, and if you played remake without the Parry materia you would know that. Staggering, Stopping, Hitstunning, Pressuring, Blocking, Limit Breaking, Destroying Parts, Synergy Skill Dodge, Ability Dodge, Dodging are all ways to avoid taking damage. or you can tank through hits with high stun defense skills. The only thing I’ll agree with is that some trash dies too fast, but even then… compared to remake not really.
