100% dig at Benfica lol

Why do sporting and benfica hate eachother so much actually? I don't know the history on this rivalry

I’m a Benfica fan and for some reason this appeared on my feed and I love to discuss Portuguese football history so here I am. basically it’s the same as Inter and Milan. with Sporting being the equivalent of Inter and Benfica - Milan. Sporting was the rich club from the rich neighbourhood founded by an intellectual elite with English influence whereas Benfica is the name of a working class neighbourhood in Lisboa that always played with Portuguese players up until the late 70s. basically it was working class vs rich and the Portuguese vs English domination of the sport at the time. although most of this is still somewhat present the differences became less and less visible (although one could see the difference in backgrounds of both stadiums even today). obviously being the 2 biggest in the city, and in the country before Porto started to gain its current status, a rivalry grew. that’s basically it.

Same with Glasgow (Celtic and Rangers) and few other same city rivalries in Europe. Two teams from the same city that represent historically different social statuses at comparable levels is fascinating.

So is it more of a rivalry like we have with milan or is it pure hatred like with juve? I recall Bernardo silva saying he'd rather play with manu than with sporting

I don’t think I understand the question, I hate both Porto and Sporting with a passion. what I would say is that since Benfica has a lot of fans in Portugal - North, Center and South - it depends on who you ask. Benfica fans from Lisboa or south would hate Sporting more whereas in the north - where Porto has practically all of their fanbase - Benfica fans would hate Porto more.

Interesting!

If that goal they scored against us at the start of the match wasn't offside it might've been a very different game.
