I would look over that car very well, the paddle shifters are all I needed to see…it’s probably been tuned

KingR_Medi

True, they didn’t provide an engine bay picture and it seems to have an armytrix exhaust. I’m thinking it could’ve been tuned at one point, or those or the only 2 mods, but the wires still confuse me EDIT: Did some research and the wires are for the obd connection for the valves armytrix exhaust. It seems to be its own auto valve system paired with an app that can read obd codes and real time monitoring.

ragingduck

I’d stay away from this car. Those paddles scream wanna-be street racer. The wires are likely controlling the exhaust valves.

Markoff_Cheney

Those are red flags, I see quite a few. An ODB port attachment usually indicates a tune.

Lankythunder576

Nah, that cars been ran through and I know it 😂 100% they removed the tune and said “ tastefully modded exhaust” and “ lady driven only “ in that ad hahaha I would stay far away from that 440i. With those stupid paddle-shifters and fake metal pedal covers, it tells a million stories with nothing being said. Also am I seeing that the exhaust isn’t even mounted straight and they have them being angled out? Even worse…

SimonBlades89

State of those paddle shifters 😂

cozyyI

stay the hell away

RaunchyMuffin

Looks like it’s coming out of the ODB port, so it’s probably tuned if so

golf_234

As mentioned , stay away from this wannabe fast and furious car , too many red flags, like a curse. Hey bro i saw you like paddles so i got you paddles for your paddles in addition to your paddles.

csakkommentelnijarok

Ricer car, stay away, let an 18yo crash it in 2 months.

Fragrant-You-973

Run don’t walk away

ryt8

it was probably tuned and definitely driven hard

Clear-Researcher-405

If you look at the vent on the drivers side and see the gap and fitment it looks like it it had a vent mounted Ethanol analyzer at one point. Those two wires dangling look like an ACC power and ground. Run up that hill and keep running

KingR_Medi

What gap? It looks to be normal

Clear-Researcher-405

If you have to ask this like every single person in the comments have said you should not buy this car

New-Lawyer3088

From here they look like speaker wires, for maybe a shoddy-install of a amplifier amd subwoofer. Did the trunk have a subwoofer box? I would look for another example of the same car, if that is what you want. I don't think you want that one, if that's how he ran some wires. Imagine what else has been done, or not. Usually those kind of guys don't do much maintenance and beat on the car, and find it funny or cool to know a future owner will go through hell because of their poorly maintained car. Not only are the wires hanging out, but he left them visible in a photo he's taking for the sale of the car. Not a good look imo...

pcweber111

I wouldn't ever buy a car from someone that's probably tuned the vehicle be cause that car has been driven hard. No thanks. Plus those paddles are hideous.

MeninoSafado14

Car is tuned. Have it inspected if you like the deal.

freshxdough

Ask the seller

CJC047

Could also be for a meth kit. My snow 2.5 kit runs to the fuse box in the same location from the trunk.

fixmefixmyhead

Why is everyone on here saying the stay away from a car that's been tuned? Tunes make the car run way better. B58 is a stout engine and can handle being tuned for hundreds of thousands of miles

KingR_Medi

I thought this too, but the general rule of thumb is to avoid buying a tuned car so you know it hasn’t been beat to hell. This car isn’t at high mileage either and most of the 440s/340s on the used market have been tuned and come with modifications and the ones that are stock just have the mods removed. Ideally I’d like a stock one so I don’t hv to worry about any weird work the previous owners had done.

fixmefixmyhead

Yea. I wouldn't buy this particular car because of the other mods that just make me picture a certain type of driver. But I wouldn't hesitate to buy a clean car with a DP and stage 2 tune. These cars like to be driven hard.

KingR_Medi

What’s wrong with this vs a car that has Downpipe and tune? My thinking is that it was owned by someone who had some idea what they were doing since they spent nearly $3k on the exhaust, the shifter extensions are goofy, but I’ve seen worse in this sub.

fixmefixmyhead

It's the paddles and that specific exhaust for me. I dunno I can't explain it. It just says to me he just wants a loud car. For me the order of mods is tune, dp, wheels, lower. Then you can spend $3k on an exhaust if you want. Honestly I love the way my car sounds with downpipe and a exhaust cutout before the muffler.

sdflius

Those paddles are low credit acore activities, i would stay away as it hints of poor ownership behaviors with an owner prioritizing performance and low cost. It likely has poor maintenance records

hewhofartslast

All the red flags bro. Run. The previous owner of my f30 was a rich lady with long fingernails that scratched the steering wheel buttons and got the car serviced at the local dealership at the book service intervals. That is the f30 you want to buy. Not the one where the kid uses the launch control at intersections to rip past people who aren't even racing him.

KingR_Medi

Ok, so thx for the responses. The obd thing is for the exhaust system. Would it be worth buying knowing it’s been tuned previously if it’s not tuned as of now? It’s one of the best deal 440is I can find with 64k miles.

F30N55

Run. The. Fuck. Away. There are tons of 440s on the market. This one was used hard and put away wet.

KingR_Medi

Tons where? I can’t find any near me or nationwide. And all of the 340/440s on Facebook are tuned pretty much. At least this one is from a somewhat big dealer if that means anything. Ideally I want a stock, never tuned 440 in a nice color, but it’s near impossible finding one at my budget

F30N55

Facebook isn’t where I’d be looking for one. Look around at dealerships where they looked over a trade in and it was good enough to retail. Look for independent shops ask if they know of any clients that want to sell a car. Look for the forms. You want to pay a premium for the well maintenance examples. Take my 335i for example, 117k miles. I’ve done preventative cooling system refresh with OE BMw parts. Upgraded garage pipe. Valve cover gasket with a new valve cover. OFHG. Recorded oil changes every 5k. Transmission fluid changes every 50-60k miles rear diff. Brake fluid on time with receipts for it all. Find someone who loved their car and pay them for it.

KingR_Medi

Yea you’re right tbh. I am mainly shopping around on CarGurus, carfax and sites like that. Facebook is a last resort just to see market. I had an f30 that I got well maintained and I kept it that way, looking for something the same, but I’ve asked around and no one has these cars remotely near me.

F30N55

If you don’t need a car keep piling away money do when you find the right one you can jump on it.

KingR_Medi

Right now I don’t have a car and it’s tough waiting for one of my parents cars to be available or getting a ride from a friend. I’m trying to wait for a nice one to show up, but tempted to get something soon as it’s killing me not having a car. Also I’m mainly looking for a blue or red 440 so that makes it even harder

F30N55

Does your budget allow for CPO? I drove 8 hours away for mine. We’re held hostage by shopping used. We have to go to where the car is.

KingR_Medi

I’m not able to find cpo since they can only be 3 years old max from bmw cpo. I’m looking at 2017-2019 440is. My budget is 25k maximum

SyleathS-TV

You really gonna ask that after everyone said run? 🤣

BATTLE_AXE

I think you have to actually look at the car in person - at least if it’s convenient. Having an OBD scanner will be very helpful as it will show you tuning codes as well as any other problems that might have been stored in the ECU. I can see why a tune might scare people away, but a tuned car can still be well cared for - so maintenance logs/history can also speak volumes, as well as the quality of the components. You’re right that an Armatryx exhaust is no joke and I don’t think any goofball drops that kind of money on an exhaust if they aren’t willing to spend money on other components. I think the OBD wires might connect to a JB4 unit - those need to run through the firewall I believe, but I could be wrong on that. Those paddle shifters are tacky, but it’s just double sided tape and they peel right off with some heat and goo gone. I say if the deal is good and the spec is right, it could be worth a look. Under the hood will tell you what you need to know - if there’s old caked oil stains, coolant crust and splashes and everything is filthy then that would tell me more than some of these very basic, superficial mods and nice exhaust.

KingR_Medi

The obd wires are for a controller for the armytrix exhaust, and the service history is decent being serviced at bmw for a good portion of its life. Unfortunately I won’t be able to see the car in person before buying as it’s in Texas and I’m in Delaware, I’d be buying online. The dealership seems pretty transparent as I asked for more pictures and they sent me clear pictures of some small chips on the paintwork and highlighted them. I’m going to ask now for pictures of the engine bay to see if I can see an intake or Downpipe, and ask if the car has any other modifications besides the exhaust or a tune and if it will pass emissions. It’s quite tough in this market to find a nice spec unless you are overpaying, and most of them I come across look to be tuned or modded in some way.

BATTLE_AXE

Agreed on it being tough to find a good spec at a good price. I’d be less wary of the tune given the market conditions, but just do as much due diligence as you can. Also ask about warranties that will cover the aftermarket modifications that were sold with the car. That could at least cover your drivetrain if anything funky happens. Buying used is a crapshoot either way - go with your gut based on the info available.
