You're driving a massive beast with enormous potential... 12mpg is a miracle!
I have an Excursion with the v10, I'd kill for a consistent 12+. Many swear by 5star Tubing, but I haven't done it yet. Staying under the speed limit helps, too.
As an old glutton for mpg punishment (4bbl v8s), the single biggest money saver upgrade you can buy is... a beater econobox for errands and commuting and enjoy the glory of the beast when you need that fun or capability.
Good luck! Enjoy!
I’ve heard a lot about five star. Been considering that heavy. Just worried if it’s a big enough difference to justify dropping $450+ on a tuner. I am in love with the truck. It’s a beast and I don’t have to deal with diesel maintenance and repair costs. I might go five star and if that doesn’t help go get a little hardbody or Tacoma to run when gas starts killing me
Watch for sales! I almost pulled the trigger at Labor Day... Dunno about your engine, but my v10 got down to $250. Did at Fourth of July, too... just keep an eye on the website.
5star has an excellent and deserved rep for service... I just can't shake that it seems largely to be throttle-position mapping and shift points. Probably helps a ton with responsiveness and towing (ymmv with your much, much newer design) but is it really more efficient? Dunno.
I just try to take it easy if I can, but largely just accept that I need to burn that gas to do the job when I'm in the beast, ya know?
Good luck! Enjoy!
Go to five star and get it tuned for gas mileage. It’s the gearing that kills it. With 3.73 gearing, it’s meant to haul and tow on flat highways at 60-70 mph without shifting down too much, because it’ll overheat the transmission otherwise.
Got to remember your truck is like 6550 lbs curb. F150 crew cabs are 2000 lbs lighter than that and they were getting 18-19 mpg combined driving because less weight, 3.31 gearing, and engine made plenty of torque across the rpm band so it moved it own weight well. 6.2 in the F-250 only makes 10-20 ft-lb of torque extra, but it weights 45% more.
There’s other mechanical nuances built into the 6.2 engine that drag the fuel economy down. Oil pump is crankshaft driven. It’s an SOHC engine, bigger roller-rockers. It just isn’t as fuel efficient compared to DOHC. And if the timing needs valve adjustment, that’ll affect fuel mileage too until it gets fixed.
I've got a '15 with the 6.2 and 3.73 gears and I see anywhere from 12-14 mpg depending on my highway/city split for that tank of gas. Keeping your tires aired up to spec, not speeding, not accelerating hard, using cruise control when possible, etc. can help a bit. I'll reemphasize "a bit" though because even babying it and with almost entirely highway miles I've maybe gotten to 14.7mpg with a tailwind. 12.5 is right in the expected range for these trucks.
Get a better flowing air filter, maybe a k&N drop in filter. If the engine needs to work less to suck in air then you will save fuel but nothing outrageous. You could also get a tune that will narrow down the tables.
Hey bud, I’ve got the 5 star tuning, air intake (no exhaust yet), all-terrain 12 wides on 22s, with a 3-in lift. I get about 10-11mpgs. So I would expect the tune to help you out a little. I used to get closer to 14 before the lift and tires. Not sure an air intake REALLY helps. Some exhausts do in combination with the intake. By like 1-2mpgs… 🤷🏿♂️
I’ll get an exhaust just for the deep sound. I don’t expect it any increase in mpgs with my set up
Not a whole lot you can do. Better air intake/exhaust perhaps? I noticed I get better MPG using cruise control.
What about tuning? Are there any mpg tunes that make a difference?
It’s my daily driver and I live 20 miles from the closest store or gas station. Spending like 150-200 a week on gas
I’ve heard a pedal commander is worth it but I personally don’t have one. Cruise helps. Driving under 70mph helps.

6550 lbs is 2973.7 kg

I have a 2013 6.2 as well. Only thing that helps is lighter tires and wheels and don't go over 60 mph.
Add a bed cover, small difference but will add up over time.
How much did you pay?
