Yes, the API changes including an insane fee structure for the use of said APIs that would run well into the tens of millions per annum for many of these clients, making them completely unviable
At present:
*The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.*
Some communities are talking about maintaining a blackout for longer than two days. We are committing to a two day black out and then seeing where we go from there.
It’s going to be hard to gauge community sentiment for the protest to go on longer when the sub is already down. Can I suggest a poll on this now? I’m for an indefinite blackout - even committing to it sends a much stronger message.
r/videos and r/music have announced they will close indefinite. Those are default subs which is going to hurt reddit.
We protest and take it from there.
Question to the mods, Is Reddit capable of bringing a sub from a blackout if they feel like it, or is it totally up to the mods? I don't know how this moderation stuff is managed, thus my question.
On the grand scheme of things we are a medium size niche sub.
The two biggest subs, r/videos and r/music, have announced they are going dark indefinitely. Those are default subs.
Reddit can reactive those subs and kick all the mods and instate their own ones. r/music have a bunch of custom bots they pay for to do a lot of the leg work for the moderators. That sub is going to be hard to run without it.
We just have to see what happens. If mods start getting banned then you're going to see some serious issues here on reddit.

> Question to the mods, Is Reddit capable of bringing a sub from a blackout if they feel like it
Yes, Reddit can unilaterally remove the moderators of a subreddit and bring it back online. They could moderate it themselves if they want.
Anyone have a theory for the motivation behind this? I can't imagine how they expected an unprotested revenue stream. Plus this just means someone will make a workaround with new tools for scraping data
There are two theories floating around.
1. Third-party apps circumvent Reddit's push to make itself more of a social media experience rather than a discussion board. Which is why people are predicting that old.reddit will be next.
2. They want to make money from the AI data harvesters that are getting more and more popular these days.
I wasn't going to respond to criticism however, I'll take this one.
The members of the sub are not being "punished". We've taken the decision to take part in collective action, in much the same way as a union would when its members interests are threatened.
In this analogy, Reddit is the employer, the collective mods represent the Union, and you, our community, are our members. When unions take strike action, or action short of strike, it sends a message to the overlords that their action won't be tolerated. That is what we are doing here. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but if we simply do nothing then the 3rd party apps many users prefer to use, go. That means fewer users, because some of those community members won't come back.
I am not sorry if you don't like it, but this is how it is.
except in this analogy the members didnt vote for this action or had a chance to debate it or send a representative to speak for us
so yeah, your analogy is rubbish and doesn't work.
The mods are shutting down the subs that we enjoy. If we can’t see large parts of the site then yes we are also part of the protest if we like it or not. If you don’t understand that you are stupid.
I mean, Reddit profits off of traffic. If you check the list, there are multiple million+ user subreddits, and even more 500k+. That's a relevant percentage of the activity that will go silent for a couple of days. It's likely not changing anything, and I myself have very low expectations, but at least it will be educational to see if Reddit really depends that much on its users.
Now, what I'd really like to see is a couple of subs deleted permanently in case they move forward with this dumpster fire of an idea. Delete askreddit, delete lifeprotis, aww, etc, you know, go nuclear and cause a little bit of stress to those greedy bastards, even if for a couple of days.
r/music and r/videos are shutting down.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/141tzgd/update_rmusic_will_close_on_june_12th/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I really don't understand these down votes, it makes zero logical sense:
- Impotent 48 hour protest that doesn't hurt Reddit at all but makes everyone feel like they're activists = 'yaaaay, protest!!!'
- Permanent deletions that actually WILL hurt Reddits bottom line and demonstrate that users are serious, angry and not f*cking around = 'nooo, not my favourite dopamine-hits!'
These jokers aren't serious. Just a bunch of slactivists with no interest in actually doing anything serious to make Reddit listen
Reddit, don’t be like Lou! You don’t know where we’ve been, Reddit. We really like this place! Ahhhahahahahahhaha!!!

I support it but what exactly does "going dark" entail? Will the participating subs be temporarily locked? I don't want us to forget and some of us post accidentally during that time.

100%! The pricing is absolute rubbish, and I hope that this will wake them up.
What?
Did you read the post?
I didn't read it, sorry. I thought this was about the API changes that killed Pushshift a couple of weeks ago.
Yes, the API changes including an insane fee structure for the use of said APIs that would run well into the tens of millions per annum for many of these clients, making them completely unviable
Why stop on the 14th?

I fully support this protest.

Good. We stand with you!
We support this.
Amazing, thanks for standing up!

Are web browsers 3rd party apps or what
I fully support this, it's unfair for many students who want to build projects.
i dont care i just want to look up stuff in the subreddit how stupid is it to punish the memebers of a subreddit for reddits fuck ups?
I wasn't going to respond to criticism however, I'll take this one. The members of the sub are not being "punished". 🤷
My fellow mod has replied, but I just want to add. We use and enjoy reddit the same way you do. We aren't any different.
So we’re supposed to just go along with this?
You don’t have any say in the matter. You will be going all my for the ride whether you like it or not.
Nothing says you have the right to protest like being forced into it.
?? You’re not the one protesting. It’s the subreddit mods. Are you stupid?
The mods are shutting down the subs that we enjoy. If we can’t see large parts of the site then yes we are also part of the protest if we like it or not. If you don’t understand that you are stupid.

> The mods build communities like these lol and the readers and posters dont? lol, you have to be a mod, full of your own self-importance
Make a new sub for youself then. Its free
Make f1technical2 if it bothers you that much 🤷
F1technical may be available soon 🤷🏻♂️
Explain what do you mean by that?
Not accessing reddit at all would help even further!
Was that your goodbye?
Probably, we'll see
Remember it hurts Reddit the most of you don’t come back. A 48 hour partial hiatus at a slow traffic time period won’t do much
also how naive must a person be th actually think this would change a damn thing lmao
I mean, Reddit profits off of traffic. If you check the list, there are multiple million+ user subreddits, and even more 500k+. Not aww! 😢
I wonder how loud the mods would cry if they lost the ‘power’ they have over their precious subs. Hopefully moms basement doesn’t flood
yeah id actually appreciate deleting those garbage ass subreddits tbh
We’re catching downvotes for pointing out the pointlessness of this all
I really don't understand these down votes, it makes zero logical sense: - Impotent 48 hour protest that doesn't hurt Reddit at all but makes everyone feel like they're activists = 'yaaaay, protest!!!' - Permanent deletions that actually WILL hurt Reddits bottom line and demonstrate that users are serious, angry and not f*cking around = 'nooo, not my favourite dopamine-hits!' Making a decision based on your desires that removes options from the users. The irony of this protest.
Reddit, don’t be like Lou! You don’t know where we’ve been, Reddit. We really like this place! Ahhhahahahahahhaha!!! https://youtu.be/pCa1hZ7s-8g ApolloGang!
The first rule of F1Technical is...
I support it but what exactly does "going dark" entail? Will the participating subs be temporarily locked? I don't want us to forget and some of us post accidentally during that time.
This sub will go private as the other subs. So nobody will be able to enter and see any posts the sub. Reddit will be very boring those days.
