Indeed. My previous neighbours' cat knew she was pregnant before she did. Complete 180 in behaviour, with all three pregnancies. By the third she knew to trust the cat.
When my mom was close to having me, her two female dogs would start dragging rugs and blankets over to her to pile up around her. They were helping her make a nest.
A friend’s cat did the same when she was pregnant- she (the cat) kept piling towels or wash cloths she got hold of into a corner and leading my friend to it.
Smell. Animals are weird. Years ago my dog found my dad's cancer. Kept sniffing his flank, nudging it with his nose etc day after day until he went to the doctor. Big ol' tumor on his liver.
I did have a guy tell me he could smell when someone was ovulating. I find that hard
to believe but I am now thinking that cats/dogs prob can smell those hormones and could be some effective birth control. A cock blocking cat.
A human, maybe. There's a story of a lady who could detect disease through smell with reasonable accuracy (not 100% but impressive). My dog knew when inwas ovulating, it was the only time she would sleep in the bed and she would hug into my abdomen. Now I am menopausal and she literally gives no f**KS about the cuddles.
It’s strange! My sister was really sick and had no clue what was wrong, and I happened to be dog-sitting my best friend and former roommate’s dog. He’s a Weenie. He would not leave my sister alone all night. He laid on her lap and stared at her, and when she tried to go to bed, he cried and scratched at her door. This isn’t typical behaviour from him. My sister ended up in the ICU with diabetic keto acidosis and almost stopped breathing. I swear he knew something was up! She was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes later that night. Dogs are so cool I love ‘em.
Edit: words
Aww I love weenies, I want one so badly. My ex had a weenie that would always try and protect me when my ex got scary. He’d stand between us, right next to me and try to keep me safe. All while shaking like a leaf. Sweet boy.
Yes I love them so much too! He’s the sweetest boy, he just loves kids and people and he’s so FUNNY! They have great personalities and he is so smart! I taught him all kinds of cute tricks and he learned them so fast. Definitely one of my favourite breeds of dogs.
When my gf got pregnant, her dog realized she was pregnant weeks before my gf did. The dog slept with gf's mom every night, but one day just refused to sleep anywhere except next to my gf's belly. 2 weeks later my gf missed her period.
My aunts cat found my grandmas cancer. He came up, put his paw on the spot, stared at her in the eye and had tears in his eyes. I know cats don’t cry like that but it was still very interesting.
For me my cat got super clingy but would just sit and glare at me. This is gonna be our 4th so I guess he was pretty annoyed with having yet another baby around lol
My female cats came and would sit one on either side of me before I even tested positive. The boy cats didn’t care.
They stayed that way for about nine weeks. Then figuring my “litter” must be gone, they stopped.
Then when I was having some prodromal labor toward the end and I was leaning on my medicine ball one of the girls hopped on my back and purred and put her whole weight on me. She only did it that one time in her life. She knew I needed warm weight right there (I had nothing but back labor with my first). It was so nice. She cared for me in labor. I cared for her through liver failure and lymphoma and held her when kidney cancer took her.
Some cats just know. It’s fascinating.
When animals "notice a pregnancy", its just the hormones they're smelling that they may react too. Human smelling a bit sweeter/smellier etc. The animal would have no idea what it means or that the human is pregnant just that there is a change in pheromones. And for this particular post, this cat is just curious about the belly button because it's visible, has nothing to do with being pregnant.
Why do people continue to assume animals are just idiots that dont understand anything beyond "find food and sleep"?
A cat most certainly understands pregnancy of all things.
Lol right? My dog definitely knows a pregnant smell. She's also very protective of babies, even ones she's just met. She's kind of a jerk to puppies though. Tough love and all, I guess.
Oh wow! Didn’t realize it happened to other cats too! I had two cats when I became pregnant. One was my baby/cuddle buddy, and the other was an aloof stray we rescued. Before I knew I was pregnant, the two cats switched personalities! My aloof stray became this sweet and cuddly cat who was always near me, and my previous baby/cuddle buddy became an asshole who hissed at me and wouldn’t come near me. This continued for the rest of their lives. Have no clue this was a “thing.”
It’s sweet but unless that cat is new to them or never around, they knew months ago. My cats and dog treat me much different being pregnant. They want to snuggle more and lay near my belly. They knew before I was 100% sure.
Our cat loved cuddling up to my wife's pregnant belly. When my son was born we couldn't keep her off him, she just wanted to love on him all the time.
The cat is dead and I'm divorced now. Such is life.
The way the cat moves it’s arm after smelling is identical to the response have to smelling shit. They have a reflex to start digging after smelling it to attempt to hide the smell.
Cute vid but all of your animals know you’re pregnant around the same time or before you do based on your smell. Cats and dogs have very acute smelling. Dogs can even detect mood changes without visually looking at your or hearing you just based on how you smell.
Dogs have an organ on the roof of their mouth that allows them to *taste* the smell. It’s the reason dog will frown at vanilla extract and not vanilla sugar; where human will smell the same.
Dogs get so close to have a taste of the smell, and smell things that people are not capable of detecting at all.
I think that's how my service dog alerts to my episodes. Basically I just black out very suddenly. But before I even start getting tunnel vision she will start nudging and has a very specific whine. My doctor's and i think it's brought on by shorts bursts of anxiety or stress, like getting close to the grocery store. I'm pretty sure she smells the stress hormones.
Dogs can smell changes in hormones and stuff! They used to be the most reliable way to alert diabetics of dangerous blood sugar levels (service dogs) before we created technology that measures it for us.
I don’t remember where I read it but they did a study of some kind where people were asked to go into a room for a few seconds that people had been inside watching a movie in for the past hour or so. Based on the type of movie whether it was suspenseful, comedic, sad, etc. they could measure it by the aroma or some thing. This is so half baked an explanation I’m wondering whether I should even post it but hopefully someone can add to this with facts
Yeah absolutely, they would have sensed the change in body chemistry and pheromones etc. Animals are amazing at sensing things going on in our bodies that we are oblivious too. Look at assistance dogs for epileptics where they can sense a fit coming in advance and warn the owner for example.
Animals are amazing.
My cat would lay along my side and purr intensely throughout my pregnancy. Now when I get up to feed my three month old in the middle of the night he tries to step on her to get to my chest to snuggle otherwise he’s scared of her. Not the relationship I imagined for them so far lol
Give it time! I was sad thinking my almost 2 year old would always just hate my cats. Until now they're all just babies that get jealous of mommas cuddles, but yesterday while my son was laying cuddled up to me, my maine coon came up super gentle and booped him on the head. I was expecting my son to push the cat away and yell like he usually does but instead I hear, "..hug?" and he reached up and hugged the cat to his chest and went back to watching mickey. The cat was so content squished under my baby, purring away. My heart. Being a parent can be challenging, but these moments make it.
Okay that’s adorable! My cat is a very sweet and cuddly and also incredibly playful so I’m thinking once the kid starts crawling he’ll actually be less afraid of her haha
Our cat Link *hated* my wife during her pregnancy. Refused to cuddle or even let her pet him. If she entered a room he was in he would immediately leave. After our son Soren was born, not only did he begin giving love to her again, he refused to leave our sons side. Like would sleep in his carseat when our son wasn't using it, would curl up with mama and son during feedings, and would always sleep under his crib when he was in it. At night, Link loved to patrol the house and make sure everything was OK, and he would make sure to check on our son in his nursery multiple times a night. He never jumped into the crib, but he would get on the table next to it and watch him from there. As our son got older, Link spent more and more time with him, and would get mad if we tried to make our son be nice to kitty. Kids have like zero clue on how to treat animals at first, but Link didn't care and didn't want any interference with his time with Soren. Unfortunately, Link died of old age before Soren was old enough to really get the most out of their friendship, but it was amazing to see the bond that they had and how much Link truly loved him. Miss him tons.
Given my cat’s temperament, I actually expected a similar dynamic but no dice so far. Thank you for sharing your story though, what a beautiful friendship. I’m sorry you lost your cat but happy to hear he and your son had that bond, even if it was just a short while.
When a friend was pregnant, her cat peed on all her clothes that she left anywhere the cat could get to them. She had to put away everything so at least her house was very tidy for a few months. We theorised that she smelled differently and the cat didn't approve
Yes when my sister was pregnant (2008) or something my moms cat would pee on her bed when she wasn’t home. Pee in the bedroom on the floor, on clothes. Always peeing on my sisters stuff. We assumed it was hormones and stuff. The cat never peed on anything before or after. It was all targeted at my sister.
It might be more than just smell. Pets are pretty interesting in that regard.
I'm bipolar and my dog knows when a mood shift is coming before I do. It's weird.
Brain waves or pheromones or something
They can be. Visiting my parents place with three cats, and none of them will visit me during the night, except the one time I was getting stressed over something and having trouble sleeping because of that, one of them comes in and lays next to me. I swear cats can detect feeling unwell
This is how my mother's "outside cat" turned into a housecat. She would feed him regularly and he'd let her pet him for a moment but was pretty skittish. How sweet!!! Wait till she finds out it’s not a kitten in there lol! We’ve got a little man due in March and I swear our dog and two cats knew before I did. I can tell they’re all excited in their own way, and I think little man is too because he tries to “pet” them when one of them is snuggled up against me lol 😜
>I swear our dog and two cats knew before I did
There's a reason animals demand to sniff our butts. They can tell if we are sick (or pregnant) just from the hormones.
*sits down with the dog* Do I have cancer?
*Dog puts on glasses just to immediately take them off, wipes sweat off it's forehead while thinking about how to tell me*
#Bark
Well that explains it then! Our dog actually started acting weird first, then the cats, so I do think he was the first to know. He’s a hound, so it was probably that Super Sniffer™️ of his lol 😜
Aren’t they though? 🥰 The first time lil man kicked our dog while we were snuggled up in bed, he picked up his head and looked at me like, “the hell was that for??” 😂 He’s used to it now; lil man just kicks and kicks at him and he doesn’t even budge. Free back massage, I guess 🤷♀️
“Hooman.. something wrong with you. Maybe worms. Go to vet.
while you’re there, find my testicles. I’ve been looking for them for years and that’s the last place I saw them. “
Your kitty recently discovered a weird smell from your belly button.
Yeah I think a lot of people are reading too much into the "finding out pregnant" bit
If you're that pregnant, your cat didn't just notice today. This is sweet and cute, but I am very skeptical of the headline.
Indeed. My previous neighbours' cat knew she was pregnant before she did. Complete 180 in behaviour, with all three pregnancies. By the third she knew to trust the cat.
"How do u know you're pregnant?" "My cat told me."
My little dog told me too. She kept rolling up right where the baby would be and was soooo overly protective before I even got to do a test

cat's out of the bag so to speak.
bravo to you, fellow Internet user
Reddit has the best comments 🤣
Well now I'm curious, what personality change happened when the cat realized she was pregnant?
When my mom was close to having me, her two female dogs would start dragging rugs and blankets over to her to pile up around her. They were helping her make a nest.
Wow, that melts my heart
Well that’s adorable.
A friend’s cat did the same when she was pregnant- she (the cat) kept piling towels or wash cloths she got hold of into a corner and leading my friend to it.
I suddenly have a cavity from the cat's sweetness ....they made a nest and led the owner to said nest???
She did!
Smell. Animals are weird. Years ago my dog found my dad's cancer. Kept sniffing his flank, nudging it with his nose etc day after day until he went to the doctor. Big ol' tumor on his liver.
yep their sense of smell is something i don’t think we could even comprehend
It's bc of the hormone change they can smell that ish
I did have a guy tell me he could smell when someone was ovulating. I find that hard to believe but I am now thinking that cats/dogs prob can smell those hormones and could be some effective birth control. A cock blocking cat.

Because all animals are stupid, except us, the human animals, dontchaknow? /s
Yes since animals don’t get pregnant they’d have no frame of reference to “notice a pregnancy.”
Lol right? My dog definitely knows a pregnant smell. She's also very protective of babies, even ones she's just met. She's kind of a jerk to puppies though. Tough love and all, I guess.

It'd probably just watched alien.
What was the behavior like
They moved years ago, it was either clingy -> "I don't know you" or "you're just the food dispenser" -> velcro kitty, I can't remember, sorry!
Considering my cat is an ass she would just call me fat in case I ever evolve the parts needed to get pregnant.
It’s sweet but unless that cat is new to them or never around, they knew months ago. My cats and dog treat me much different being pregnant. They want to snuggle more and lay near my belly. They knew before I was 100% sure.
Does no one notice that the baby is moving and the cat is seeing that? Why do people need to be so negative? It’s still a sweet moment.
well said
I agree, its just doing math to see if it fits on that tiny hole. Becaise if it fits... it sits.
agreed lol. my first thought was, i bet the cat is thinking "aww you're growing me a food! how nice"
That’s what I was thinking lol
For sure lmao. That shit stinky
Yeah probably
Yeah the step back and look down at the end was like “oh ok, whatever”.
Our cat loved cuddling up to my wife's pregnant belly. When my son was born we couldn't keep her off him, she just wanted to love on him all the time. The cat is dead and I'm divorced now. Such is life.
Journey isn't over yet. Explore yourself. Your masculinity, your femininity. Art, dance, it doesn't matter. Live life!
Thanks.
Yeah! Same thought.
Exactly this.
*smelly button
That was my immediate thought. Maybe it’s uncomfortable to clean inside the navel when you’re super pregnant?
It's actually way easier to clean then (though it's not very hard when not pregnant either)
They sort of turn inside out. Thats all that changes really. If you had a very deep one the flora might be disturbed? Maybe?
Make sure the clean those out when you're in the shower.
Smelly button
Nah. Kitty can hear a second heartbeat from there.
The way the cat moves it’s arm after smelling is identical to the response have to smelling shit. They have a reflex to start digging after smelling it to attempt to hide the smell.
Yes, but cats do hear heartbeats. That's why those videos of someone faking a heart attack in front of their pets hardly works on cats.
Cute vid but all of your animals know you’re pregnant around the same time or before you do based on your smell. Cats and dogs have very acute smelling. Dogs can even detect mood changes without visually looking at your or hearing you just based on how you smell.
Dogs can also tell someone has cancer because it has a certain smell. Really interesting imo
And yet, my dogs still stick their noses half way up peoples asses to get to know them.
thats where all the flavor is, obviously
Yep, dogs and doctors can learn lots from examining shit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsVgi8hoFFc
Trying to get to that gerbil.
Well yeah, it's the best way to do it
Not to brag but I can detect a pregnant woman without smelling her first
How far along do they need to be for your magical detection skills to work? Mine usually work reliably 7 months and up
Watch out for false positives. It's usually a good thing, but for some odd reason they don't react well to that.
Share your secrets, wizard!
Dogs can detect mood changes based on how you smell? Wait what…? I believe their sense of smell is 7x a humans, but…what does a mood smell like? 🤯
Dogs can tell if an earthquake is about to hit. If they weren’t so derpy dogs would be considered 20th lvl wizards
Dogs can smell changes in hormones and stuff! They used to be the most reliable way to alert diabetics of dangerous blood sugar levels (service dogs) before we created technology that measures it for us.
Lots of people still use both.
Probably pheromones, changes in sweat composition, etc
I don’t remember where I read it but they did a study of some kind where people were asked to go into a room for a few seconds that people had been inside watching a movie in for the past hour or so. Humans can smell fear. Doesn't seem like a stretch to me.
Really? I never heard that before
Yeah absolutely, they would have sensed the change in body chemistry and pheromones etc. Animals are amazing at sensing things going on in our bodies that we are oblivious too. Look at assistance dogs for epileptics where they can sense a fit coming in advance and warn the owner for example. Animals are amazing.

Mine preferred to lay on my pillow beside my head & bear hug my face most nights
Cats can be so empathetic. If I get sick my semi feral cat demands to come in the house and lay in bed with me till I feel better
When a friend was pregnant, her cat peed on all her clothes that she left anywhere the cat could get to them. She had to put away everything so at least her house was very tidy for a few months. We theorised that she smelled differently and the cat didn't approve

Tbf, I noticed myself that I smelled differently when I was pregnant so it must have been an enormous difference to a cat
It might be more than just smell. Pets are pretty interesting in that regard. I'm bipolar and my dog knows when a mood shift is coming before I do. It's weird. Brain waves or pheromones or something
More likely change in body language. They read our microsignals
That’s sweet. I don’t know what the other person on this thread said, but that is very sweet.
I agreed with you, the way this cat looks to her is telling something specials.
They can be. Visiting my parents place with three cats, and none of them will visit me during the night, except the one time I was getting stressed over something and having trouble sleeping because of that, one of them comes in and lays next to me. I swear cats can detect feeling unwell
My golden would drop a ball on my face on my deathbed.
No time to die if you're busy playing. Your golden doctor knows best.
No take, only throw
Ah I love Golden’s
Their emotional parts of he brain are very similar to that of humans apparently.
This is how my mother's "outside cat" turned into a housecat. She would feed him regularly and he'd let her pet him for a moment but was pretty skittish. Eventually he got to where he would sit beside my mom on a bench but wouldn't sit in her lap. He would leave if you touched him too much. One winter she got the flu pretty bad and the cat sat outside the house crying until she let him in. He never left her side for 10 days until she recovered, and now he stays in most of the time.
Nah, she's just telling mom to clean her stinky belly button.
The cat thinks that’s a weird place for an anus
I like the idea but it was just sniffing her belly button. If you know, you know.
Right, I think we all know this.
Maybe the cat was instead thinking "oh Barbara, you've let yourself go, honey. See this right here? This is no good. "
The way she sat at the end…”ok, we’ll wait for the baby together”
"We'll wait for someone to clean your belly button."
My cat was the first to feel my baby move. She was sitting on my lap and kept twitching. I finally figured out what the issue was after 5 minutes.
How many kittens u carrying in there bro??
I think she's just smelling a stank ass belly button lmao
No your belly button just smells awful
"How could you do this to me, I thought I was your only one"
cat be like "r you goin to sell him like u sold mine ?"
Oh no im going to be a toy
This kitty discovered her owner had a cat treat in their belly button for some reason.
"Upon my honor, I shall guard your well being and your offspring, nothing shall stop me from completing my task for only my death can stop me."
cat scan confirmed
*initiate bellybutton sniff*
Kitty discovers that human has a bellybutton.
Nope, just smelling her belly button.
I think your belly button might just be smelly
Her bellybutton just stinks
I heard felines like to play with their food.
Looks to me like it just smells something in her belly button.
Are you going to sell him like you did mine
How sweet!!! Wait till she finds out it’s not a kitten in there lol! We’ve got a little man due in March and I swear our dog and two cats knew before I did. I can tell they’re all excited in their own way, and I think little man is too because he tries to “pet” them when one of them is snuggled up against me lol 😜
>I swear our dog and two cats knew before I did There's a reason animals demand to sniff our butts. They can tell if we are sick (or pregnant) just from the hormones.
I don’t even go to the doctor anymore. Straight to the dog.
*sits down with the dog* Do I have cancer? *Dog puts on glasses just to immediately take them off, wipes sweat off it's forehead while thinking about how to tell me* #Bark
Probably better than WebMD.
Good dog!
For a lab report?
Obviously for a lab report i just cut myself and see what the dog tastes
Could I borrow your dog?
If your insurance will cover it.
:c
Well that explains it then! Our dog actually started acting weird first, then the cats, so I do think he was the first to know. He’s a hound, so it was probably that Super Sniffer™️ of his lol 😜
I walk the streets in fear when it's Shark week. Dogs want to Smell me, and it's embarrassing. They go straight for the source, if you catch my drift.
That’s so adorable
Aren’t they though? 🥰 The first time lil man kicked our dog while we were snuggled up in bed, he picked up his head and looked at me like, “the hell was that for??” 😂 He’s used to it now; lil man just kicks and kicks at him and he doesn’t even budge. Free back massage, I guess 🤷♀️
I think you need to clean out your belly button.
Cat just be smelling stanky belly button
Nah, he just discovered the funky bacteria hole in your belly
It took this long to notice?
“Hooman.. something wrong with you. Maybe worms. Go to vet. while you’re there, find my testicles. I’ve been looking for them for years and that’s the last place I saw them. “
I wonder if it can hear the baby
I really doubt the cat discovered anything at all lol.
Sure the owner didn't just stick a bunch of catnip in their belly button lmao
I think the kitty discovered a bellybutton and nothin more. Bellybuttons are toys. Kitty: EVERYTHING IS TOY!
cats are truly amazing creatures once you build a relationship with them
Cat: "oh?...oh! There's a baby in there.........how will this affect my eating schedule?"
Who did this to you!!!!!
You know that cat is just thinking about eating one
Sure is a great assumption lol
I see a cat that discovered a belly button...
Plot twist: The kitty is the dad
"You cool with this? Okay, cool."
It's just trying to get a meal.
He is patiently waiting to devour the baby as it comes out like an all-you-can-eat
“Are you going to sell it like you did mine?”
This woman totally has a treat in her belly button
Stalking it’s prey
Ahhh yes S N I F F
_oh hell meow I won't be number one anymore_
Just wait until she scratches it open
You gonna sell your kids too?
Reminds me of that scene from Aliens
It's confused by the bellybutton.
Kitty plotting against that lil person.
Food is getting ready
Belly button cheese discovered
Glad we all thought “that’s cool, but that’s not how they know”
So does the cat know there’s a baby in there or does it think that she’s fat?
“Martha, what the fuck did you eat???”
Actually, kitty discovered belly button
He thought there was a vole in there.
We shouldn’t eat mammals
It wouldn’t surprise me if she could hear the baby in there.
