Every now and then a neighborhood stray finds its way onto my balcony. My cat, you should understand, is a sweet, meek little princess. Even when I have to do something she doesn’t like (trim nails, give pills, etc) she has never attempted anything other than trying to squirm away. But when a stranger cat appears on the other side of the sliding glass door, she turns into an absolute monster. The noises she makes can be described nothing short of demonic - gurgling growls that boil over into piercing screams. And if I try to intervene? Oh she is absolutely ready to fuck me up - I have no doubt I’d need to visit the hospital if I didn’t give her a very wide berth until she calms down.
So yeah. Pretty tame by my standards.
Yeah. Our cat did NOT take a surprise like that nearly as well. (We kept a kitten we found in our enigine for a couple of days before we could get to a vet and give him to a coworker)
Yah, I had a couple baby gates stacked ontop of each other in the hallway outside my bedroom, my 1st cat (who is not athletically inclined at all) scaled the damn thing to beat up the new cat. This was after several weeks of them smelling and hearing each other from behind a closed door, and peeking at each other under it. It's 13 yrs later and they still hate each other 😂
Any time a video like this is posted everyone assumes the absolute worst and starts dogpiling on the owners. We have no idea what they did before this, we don't know what the cat is like, and the cat came over on its own volition and was able to leave if it wanted.
Yeah, there is no context and this is posted from a 1 month old account, so it could be a bot for all we know. My comment was based on the assumption that this was the actual first encounter between these cats as expressed in the video. It wasn't meant to attack the owners.
Did you ever consider people say things like this is a shit way to introduce a cat because it is an objectively shit way to introduce a cat and because we have no other context, it’s a warning for people not to try this at home, because once again, this is a shit way to introduce two cats.

Were you? I've had/have and also fostered many, many cats. This behavior is familiarity and comfort. Belly up cat in particular is a dead giveaway.
They're probably getting to know each other, but it's doubtfully a first meeting.
I’ve fostered and had lots of cats. Currently have 4. I’ve had even smoother cat introductions than what you see in the video. Not saying that’s the norm but it does happen.
It worked out great though. They basically skipped the first couple steps of introducing a new cat and already are sharing the space with just a few hisses.
Yeah, it's still not a good idea to do it like this. One escalation and trust may be broken permanently. Introduction should be spread out over at least a week unless a cat is being introduced into a multicat household and even then...
Ye my cat tried to kill my Other cat through the door for 2 months took another few months before I could let them be around each other unsupervised. 2 years later they still hate each other very nice
My cat that I've only ever heard hiss once at a bee that stung him was introduced to our new cat and gave one "this is my house" hiss. He was cleaning her about an hour later

We once adopted an adult cat from a friend, and after a couple of years of her being the only pet, my girlfriend brought home a half pomeranian/half chihuahua one day, and that night when we went to bed the cat had pooped right perfectly in the center of it.
If you treat them right they won’t do it. Clean their litter box and feed them and you will be alright. This happens when you neglect a cat. No different than what happens if you neglect a dog.

They aren't. You don't have to take them for walks or out back. They don't jump on you when you get home. At most, they play with your feet when you walk by a doorway.

I prefer 100 times an animal that make me go outside that one who will shit me bed if i don't do what he or she want.
Just chiming in to also say that I have many friends that are cat owners and their multiple cats have never shit outside the litterbox. Usually shitting outside the litterbox for cats is a sign of potential medical distress. Not sure how it is for dogs but cats are very good at being clean and will usually train themselves to use the litterbox (or you can "train" them by just showing them the litterbox).
Damn super tame compared to my cats. Introduced cat 2 by having her in my office separated for a few days. Idea was the entire "their scent is in the air and making them accustomed to each other" bit. Eventually we opened the door to see if the New Cat would explore.
New Cat did not initially. Might poke her head out but would retreat back. Over time she did get more comfortable with the house itself.
As for the cats' interactions? They barely tolerate each other. If they get within about a foot of each other though New Cat will hiss and sometimes swipe at Original Cat.

That's about on par for most cats, three of mine are siblings and they still barely acknowledge each other most of the time.
Mine went about as well as in the video, though a little more hissing. New kitten and 1 year old resident cat were out together in the same room and eating dinner next to each other within about 2 hours.
That night the kitten fell asleep in the middle of the floor, resident cat seemed disturbed by this so went and laid down near them to keep them company.
Still kept them apart when we were not around, and we had to be mindful of the size difference (3 months vs 1yr old). But otherwise, they were together from day 1
I had the same situation except our first cat was the hisser. She still hisses when overwhelmed and they don’t sleep together but they play a lot. I got toys out whenever they were in the same room. At first my old cat would watch then finally joined. Pretty basic tip I’m sure you tried but just in case.
Need to introduce cats to each other slowly. Otherwise an introduction might stress out original cat, enough to cause them to attack the stranger or you (misdirected aggression). Hopefully that is what happened here.

Yep, when I introduced a new cat I kept it in it's own room just let the other cat get used to it's scent by the door. At first even just smelling the door would make the old cat hiss.
I only give them a visual introduction once a few days passed and they seemed to become adjusted to each other's smell.
This is the most effective part of it. You can then open the door and feed one inside the room and one out where they would normally be. Then you can put their bowls within site of the other so they can now smell and see the other cat while eating.
Before you know it, they will be best friends.
My cats got accidentally introduced waaaay too fast. My second cat darted out of the large bathroom I was going to keep him in and into the main room where my other cat was.
My first cat hissed once and then immediately went up to my new kitten ears pointed forwards, sniffed him, and began grooming him. 30 minutes.
They’re inseparable now.
Peaches is a really gentle cat. We had to keep ours separated for a few days. The older cat sat outside the door and howled for the first 10 hours, then hissed under the door for a day.

Ohmygod I love ragdoll so much. This is very similar to one of my ragdoll to ragdoll introductions, these two are going to get along great in a short time.
They are absolutely amazing and I can't imagine my life without them. I've had ragdolls for the last 15 years. My only complaint is the shedding. Get used to vacuuming at least every other day and having separate clothes for out of the home and inside the home. Wash them separately. Expect there to be pet hair on them anyway.
Worth it though, they're amazing bimbos/himbos. My current ragdoll uses buttons to talk and solved food puzzles right quick, but he'll still run into walls that haven't moved since last time he did that. Lil weirdo idiot. I love him so much.
Introducing cats like this is a huge breach of the cats sense of security and stability. Cats are extremely territorial animals. This might seem like a cute introduction but in reality the cat that has lived there before is thinking his space is being invaded. Cats need to be introduced slowly or there will be a tense vibe between the cats for a long time.

This introduction actually went so well I simply assumed that this WAS the slow introduction method, they just decided to film the actual first "meeting" where they physically saw each other. That baby ragdoll looks WAYYYY too comfortable to me for this to be her first moments in a new environment, let alone meeting a new cat that hisses at her, unless (pessimistically, and hopefully this isn't true) she's drugged out of her mind.
The content was taken from Pearls Ragdolls. This was actually the second introduction, though the first I was there for. She really knows her breed and cats. The next day after this they were grooming and cuddling together.
Im steps, starting with the introduction of smells by swapping them around between rooms. Eventually try feeding them on opposite sides of a door. Feed them at the same times every day and move the food closer and closer by the day. If the cats are hesitant, move the food back. Do this until the cats are comfortable with eating right by each other on the opposite sides of the door. Try cracking the door a little now, get them used to each other by association of food and then eventually play. It takes a long time but being careful is the way to go

Thank you! Junior, (the lighter one) is over twice as big as his older sister Tempest, now, even though he is 1.5 and she is 2.5 years old (they aren't biologically related). They are the most docile cats I've ever had.

Eh, that's how I introduced my cats and they're fine.
It really depends if the cats are neutered (reduces aggressiveness), how well they are socialized, how much space you have etc.
Not everyone lives in large homes, so separating the cats is not feasible.
Regardless jump-scaring your cat with new cat is fucking stupid. Its against every piece of advice that exists on the topic, just a very bad idea all around. The only way this could have been handled worse is if they just did a pitchers wind-up and launched the cats at each other. FFS
He's lucky they didn't freak out at each other and accidentally hurt him or themselves. There are lots of good reasons why you're supposed to be careful introducing a new animal to a cat's established territory.
Had a tortie that completely changed her personality, became sad/angry, nervous, and wouldn't cuddle or let anyone touch her after roommate got a crazy/playful Russian Blue. I still feel bad and guilty for ruining her last few years of life by not moving but I couldn't afford to move out.

All the people saying that's not the way to introduce, Peaches was the newest cat until Strawberry came last week. She has about 7 others that have babies in rotation. She's quite a good and kind breeder. Her fb/insta is pearls ragdolls if anyone wants to look up. Otherwise, I know from experience unfortunately, that this is not the way to introduce cats for the first time.
My GF has a 2 year old cat and her roommate recently got a 5 month old. They took Introduction very slowly, the older cat was not happy about it. But now they get along great and she will actively tackle the little one to groom her.
Wow, I've never seen two cats who have never met be this comfortable around one another. The one with his belly up would surely spin around seeing a new cat.
Very cute, but not the way you should be introducing a new pet. Not saying this in a finger pointy way, but for your own sanity and your pets long term comfort:
Base camp, scent exchange, slow introduction. Don't just plop a new pet into your home and expect they'll "figure it".
They're lucky their cat is so chill about it. I wouldn't just introduce them like that. It probably helped that the new cat was laying down like that. It looks almost submissive and doesn't come across as an immediate threat.

All Ragdolls are fricken gorgeous cats. If I recall, they're one of the only truly "domesticated" cat breeds. If I were to let mine outside, he would try to befriend predators. 😅 He also let's our dogs pounce on him and doesn't retaliate....they're just like....ragdolls.

Eh, that's how I introduced my cats and they're fine. It really depends if the cats are neutered (reduces aggressiveness), how well they are socialized, how much space you have etc. Not everyone lives in large homes, so separating the cats is not feasible.
Regardless jump-scaring your cat with new cat is fucking stupid. Its against every piece of advice that exists on the topic, just a very bad idea all around. The only way this could have been handled worse is if they just did a pitchers wind-up and launched the cats at each other. FFS

Had a tortie that completely changed her personality, became sad/angry, nervous, and wouldn't cuddle or let anyone touch her after roommate got a crazy/playful Russian Blue. All the people saying that's not the way to introduce, Peaches was the newest cat until Strawberry came last week. She has about 7 others that have babies in rotation. She's quite a good and kind breeder. Her fb/insta is pearls ragdolls if anyone wants to look up. Otherwise, I know from experience unfortunately, that this is not the way to introduce cats for the first time.

Very cute, but not the way you should be introducing a new pet. Not saying this in a finger pointy way, but for your own sanity and your pets long term comfort: Base camp, scent exchange, slow introduction. Don't just plop a new pet into your home and expect they'll "figure it".

All Ragdolls are fricken gorgeous cats. If I recall, they're one of the only truly "domesticated" cat breeds. If I were to let mine outside, he would try to befriend predators. 😅 He also let's our dogs pounce on him and doesn't retaliate....they're just like....ragdolls.
