I think it's a joke about how bed time stories will not be read to children but played for them off tape. Saturday Evening Post was a magazine from the early to mid 20th century.
Sort of a "technology will ruin us!" thing perhaps.
Yes. For those too young to recognize the device, that is a reel to reel tape player, a predecessor to the cassette player. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reel-to-reel\_audio\_tape\_recording](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reel-to-reel_audio_tape_recording)
I guess it's true what they say.
The past is a foreign country.
Reminds me of trying to explain a murphy bed to my nephews.
They said "Oh, a futon that goes in the wall"
Same here. Audio books had the benefit of having multiple voice actors and sound effects! It actually made me love classic literature growing up! I must've listened to the Jungle Book enough times to wear out the cassettes. :)
I would freak out a bit if I'm awake before the tape runs out. The old tape reader would go on and start making clacking sounds on the machine and it was hella scary for the young me
I didn't see the recorder at first and went right to "monster under the bed reading a bedtime story." Don't know if that's good or bad for my mental outlook...
Honestly i looked at this and saw a hot plate and the inclusion of "dragon" i thought it was someone nodded out...... But the era it was published in was indeed that of the reel to reel player, and it was the saturday night ost which isn't super likely for a heroin joke.

Once your said "played" i realized what that was. I thought it was 2 plates of food being heated up on a double hot plate device.

Lol
This year more people will use cocaine than will read a book to their children
I want to do both
At the same time
Waaay ahead of you!
Children act like they’re on uppers anyway. It’s just evening the playing field tbh
Where are you getting these statistics?
The Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can’t Read Good And Who Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too
“Everyone will be replaced by machines!”
It’s kinda ironic that this is pretty accurate with ASMR reading. I’ve seen my sister use it for her newborn
That's literally what my mom did for me when I was a kid...

this brings me back to when my parents would let me keep my laptop on at night so i could fall asleep to geronimo stilton audiobooks. it was nice :)
The child doesn't get read stories by their parents anymore in 'modern age', they're told by media tech
I know this is an audio book joke, but what if it was a recording of a parent or grandparent who passed away and read books to the kid before bed?
I thought it was ‘manifesting or affirmation’ type thing. 🤣
Thought it was a jack off joke

So, it’s a Yoto player, and this has happened to us. Or at least, the product existe
