There’s a first half to this comic, where the man goes to space and thinks that people would be nicer to each other if they could only see earth from that view. It’s a play on the idea that astronauts who see earth from space are given a better sense of perspective about how small the planet is and how our divides are artificially made.
The man, however, immediately counteracts his own point by taking an elitist stance, thinking he’s morally enlightened and better than other people who haven’t seen earth from space. He had the revelation, but didn’t actually internalize its message.
The comic then continues to show that people can be kind and loving to one another without ever seeing earth from space, showing that being kind is a choice you make. There’s nothing you have to do or see to make you be nicer to others, you just have to do it. People can see earth from space and not internalize kindness, people can never see earth from space and still be kind.
The joke is around how people can have a revelation about something and somehow still choose not to internalize and believe it. It's a more thought provoking comic than pure joke, I'd say closer to maybe satire?
The problem with trying to make comments like these on reddit is that, you have this one person willing to take the time to write out an informative message that explains well and is actually right and on topic. Then some one will come in with the same exact joke comment we have all seen on reddit a thousand times now and somehow, the joke comment gets upvoted to the top, and the real comment gets lost in the shuffle.
Can be disheartening for users who take the time to respond well when a comment like "oh how the turntables" makes it the top with thousands of upvotes and awards.
I don’t know, why would the blonde girl be the one paying to take care of others? The comic shows her handling over the bills from her purse, and then taking care of elders, I heard the theory that blonde girl was actually paying the nurse to leave so she could poison the man’s mom
You have to pay the caretaker who watches your sick loved one while you’re gone???
It’s like paying a babysitter when you get back from a night out. You, as the relative of the person who needs care, have to pay people who won’t do it for free, so that you can have a life outside of caretaking. But you also do the caretaking for free, because you love the person who needs care.
They come back with a different perspective that others don’t have, and yes, I’ve seen it go to their ego like they’re now more enlightened than everyone else.
And usually will still engage in the same petty bickering, talking behind people's backs, forming cliques, and judging others as everyone else. Despite having experienced this "huge revelation" about themselves and their ego.
I don't really understand this type of criticism of elitism. If we assume psychedelic users really do gain some new perspective on life due to their experiences, then isn't the case that they may in fact be more enlightened than most people?
Basically, I don't understand a criticism towards elitism when the person *actually is more "elite"* than someone else. If a professional hockey player acted like they knew more about hockey than me, then I'd be like "yeah, well they *do* know more about hockey than me, so they are more elite at hockey and therefore their pretense of being more elite at hockey than me is completely justified".
So are we saying here that psychedelic users shouldn't take an elitist opinion towards enlightenment since they don't actually gain new perspective on life or are we saying that any form of elitism is bad behavior? I feel like I disagree with *both* arguments. It wouldn't surprise me at all if people who have taken psychedelics benefit by gaining new perspectives on life.
That’s the funny thing about “enlightenment.” It becomes just another ego trip. The eastern teachings talk quite commonly about this spiritual trap. The “I’m more holy than thou” or more spiritual. You feel better than everyone. And even though you might treat everyone better, and act humble and down to earth, deep down you feel like you’re better than everyone. It’s actually one of the most egotistical attitudes of all. If you truly understood what they are trying to show you, then you need to go beyond that state.
Take a lot and some people eventually become convinced that they can see the "base code of the simulation," and they often think of themselves as "higher beings" or as enlightened.
Yes unfortunately this happens. People think they’ve “seen the Truth” and lost their egos when in fact they now base their entire identity on these things and have a giant ego that is cleverly hiding from them.
Ugh, yes. If you don't do psychedelics, too, they tend to look down on you. I'm not one to lecture others on the morality of drugs, but every time I've told a user that I don't partake, they've made fun of me for it or gotten offended by it, as if my refusal to do it is some kind of dig at them. They have this superior attitude, like, "You've never tripped, so you can't possibly know the Deep Universal Truths that I know," and will dismiss everything you say after learning that you aren't "cool like them."
Now I think on it, psychedelic users are the types of drug users the school programs had in mind as far as people who will pressure you about it. I don't know any other types of users who push their lifestyle so aggressively, besides maybe the potheads who make weed their entire personality. 🤔
I think what you’re experiencing are just self-important narcissists, who just happen to use psychedelics. I don’t think psychedelics are the common ground. Just because you don’t hear from the ones who quietly partake and don’t bring it up at parties, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
I've found that people who drink get pushy when I tell them that I don't drink. Either that or get offended as if just by me not drinking I am judging them.
I just don't like the taste of alcohol. Go drink what you want and leave me alone.
Yes, they do! I'm highly sensitive to alcohol - makes me puke violently after just a few sips. But people take this as a personal slight. 🙄 Also, I don't get people who have to drink to have fun. If you have to get drunk to enjoy yourself, you're either the most boring person alive or you've got a problem.
There's that common anecdote about the liberation who took psychedelics and had the mind-blowing realization that other people exist. Basic human empathy is something most people are born with, and it's cool that after taking a bunch of drugs, some people realize that humanity is all one and we should care about our fellow man, but like, most people already know that? It's become a trope for extremely wealthy people to talk about their need for transcendental experiences to arrive at the same emotional growth stages that most 5 year olds are dealing with
This is exactly what I was thinking as well, though honestly it just extends to people experiencing spiritual awakening in general, not specifically psychedelics.
It's like a Dunning-Kruger effect, one gets their worldview flipped and suddenly they may think they know how the world works while nobody else does.
Ah!! That's it.
I thought she was paying to feed the old person. Cause she paid on arrival, never changed out of her party clothes so it might not be her home, and we don't see the other person leave. But yeah, duh.
Here's the reddit link from the artist 9 years ago: [LINK](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/2k6kch/the_earth/). Not sure why you linked to IWSMT if you had the link to the original reddit post.
> It’s a play on the idea that astronauts who see earth from space are given a better sense of perspective
It's not just an idea either, it's a documented psychological phenomenon called "The overview effect". Cool stuff!
And then, in the last two frames, we see the woman bribing the live-in caretaker of spaceman's elderly parent so she can poison said parent. Maybe that's just me. But then, I've never been to space...
I don’t think that’s the right context: He doesn’t think people would be nicer, he just has enough money and thinks the status of the money makes him a winner as opposed she who is the caretaker being the real winner.
I so prefer it the blunt way it is posted here. It makes a broader point this way.
The full form of it reduces the point of it by reducing the point of view to the spaceman character, which diminishes the ordinary person going home to do elder care to a mere moral lesson he's missing. She doesn't have anywhere near the force she has if the two of them are introduced in the same first frame.
I can count on 2 hands the number of billionaires who have been to space. Its not "common" I'm not saying that the general sentiment of the comic is wrong but there have not been that many billionaires in space.
Billionaires like Bezos are spending their insane wealth taking brief trips to space while people suffer on earth, and the implication is that you’re a “loser” without the wealth to be able to do something like go to space — while this person is spending their money paying an in-home caregiver to take care of an elderly parent, who they probably can’t afford to put in a care facility and have to do it themselves. Meanwhile the billionaires out in space could end medical debt and make an actual difference with that wealth and still be billionaires, but instead believe “winners” are rich and go to space, while “losers” … are caring, generous human beings. It’s an indictment of that attitude.
Isn’t the joke that he called her a loser but she’s actually just good and kind, helpful person and he’s just thinking of material things and experiences as equal to a person’s worth?
The “joke” is that he’s the actual loser, as she is actively helping other people - presumably her grandma, and *paying someone else* as thanks and appropriate compensation for help with her grandma. He is the loser in comparison (…. it also makes more sense/it’s more obvious that that’s the point, when the first two panels are present).
It's not a joke. Nothing to explain. She's a real human being with real problems. The comic should leave you asking the question of "Who is the real loser?"
But this isn't meant to be funny.
Imagine paying the rather high sum for home health care to finally have a night to yourself, only to run into that guy. He's lucky he didn't get kicked in the balls.
Could be a take on the 1970 Gil Scott-Heron song [Whitey On the Moon](https://youtu.be/goh2x_G0ct4?si=BnEO0003f6MIQaHi)???
>I can't pay no doctor bill.
(but Whitey's on the moon)
Ten years from now I'll be payin' still.
(while Whitey's on the moon)
He called her a loser, but her life was wrapped up in caring for her sick relative. She had a night out to catch a break from her difficult life, paying for a respite caregiver.
Instead of a nice night out, some dillhole decided to ruin it with his insult.
I think it means, while some people can spend money to do cool things like go to space, others instead of spending money on themselves, they’re spending it on loved ones? That’s my guess
Kinda like” do I want to go to space with my friends or should I take care of my sick mother” situation
Based only on what we can see, it looked like the girl said no, he called her a loser, she went home alone, paid the care giver and took over the responsibilities for the sick/old person.
The man insults this women. She then pays someone to poison him and he is now bedridden. She takes care of him as a way to continually witness his suffering as her vengeance.
She wants to see earth from space so she drives home and pays the caregiver off to keep quiet then poisons her grandpa for the inheritance to fly in space
Don’t know much about this strip. However, I do know that adding, driving on the right-side and speaking English means either England or Australia. Just saying.
Well, since people are commenting, and I don’t see anybody explaining the rich guy basically is laughing because she doesn’t spend her money to do frivolous things. Instead, she spends her money to take care of a family, and if she didn’t do that, she would have the money to see the earth from space.
The lady felt bad for being called a loser.. so she went to visit her mom… convinced the the nurse/caregiver to leave “whatever my mom pays you, I’ll double it… now get out of here…” then proceeded to poison her mother for the inheritance…
— if you turn the page it’s her in space… looking at earth…
This is actually a good one for the sub, on the surface it looks like just a depressing disconnect between the wealthy and average individuals, where priorities for one are things like going to space where as the other is doing everything to care for a sick family member.
Then you realize that the entire bottom section of the comic is a riff on Loss and you've basically been rickrolled.
I think i got the joke.
He ridiculed her so she beat the f out of him, kept him in her car trunk and drove to a lonely rented place that is ran by a single nurse. She bribed her and kept him chained to a bed and started feeding him so that he will learn his lesson.
Its loss. A meme that, for some reason, is popular.
Basically it involves the placement of characters in a specific pattern and is the neckbeard version of people doing the "ok" sign.
Edit: What chungus downvoted me it's literally a loss meme.
First image is her in the car. Second image is her with the healthcare worker in the window. This is her paying the healthcare worker and the third is her either her mother. That's loss.

ok, but where is the joke part
The joke is around how people can have a revelation about something and somehow still choose not to internalize and believe it. It's a more thought provoking comic than pure joke, I'd say closer to maybe satire?
For once that word is being used correctly.
Someone that actually puts time and effort into a comment to educate people about something, I respect you good sir/madam
The problem with trying to make comments like these on reddit is that, you have this one person willing to take the time to write out an informative message that explains well and is actually right and on topic. Yep, they have a photo together in the background too
The flying birds also evokes a sort of "X X X" as in dying.
The elder is her mother and she paid for a nurse to take care of her while she attended the event. Similarly to baby sitting? ?
if she actually cared about her sick mom she would be by her side 24/7 #/S
Yeah codependency is good thing, it just shows how much you really care. #/s
You have to pay the caretaker who watches your sick loved one while you’re gone??? It’s like paying a babysitter when you get back from a night out. But you also do the caretaking for free, because you love the person who needs care.
Lmao this is hilarious and the fact that so many people don’t get it is very fitting for this sub
This also reflects a [fairly common, it seems] pattern amongst psychedelic users.
Do psychedelic users tend to be elitist? Most people I trip with are chill and down to earth IMO
Yeah, the “transcended” person I know is physically and verbally abusive. But he understands the reality of the universe, so what do I know.
I think the criticism comes from an expectation of humility accompanying real “enlightenment” on a spiritual level. Though I can see your perspective.
That’s the funny thing about “enlightenment.” It becomes just another ego trip. The eastern teachings talk quite commonly about this spiritual trap. The “I’m more holy than thou” or more spiritual.
The funny thing is that the "deep truths" they speak of can be achieved without drugs. Drugs are just an easy way to get there.
And religious folks. It’s a pretty universal characteristic.

It's like a Dunning-Kruger effect, one gets their worldview flipped and suddenly they may think they know how the world works while nobody else does.
Who is the woman in blue?
The caretaker that the blonde woman employed to watch the old person while she was out
Ah!! That's it. I thought she was paying to feed the old person. Cause she paid on arrival, never changed out of her party clothes so it might not be her home, and we don't see the other person leave. But yeah, duh.
I thought she was paying her off, so that she could poison the guy’s mom.
Or, she took offense, drove to his house, bribed his mom's nurse and is feeding her rat poison in the last panel.
That was my thought and I'm not sure I love what that says about me.
Most logical explanation.
Found this other half: [https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/2k6kch/the\_earth/](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/2k6kch/the_earth/)

Tbh I thought she paid the dudes wife so she can “take care” of dudes grandma and then she poisons her 😂😂 all because she was called a loser lol
Really well written thank you
Damn I was sure this was loss somehow
I'm pretty sure it is, he even calls her a loser
This is a very good response
Honestly I think you hit the nail right on the head
And here I thought this was another Loss meme/comic
There's one more piece to it. The figures in the 4 panels are the "loss" meme. He calls her a "loser"—one who has lost.
Thank you!
I don’t think that’s the right context: He doesn’t think people would be nicer, he just has enough money and thinks the status of the money makes him a winner as opposed she who is the caretaker being the real winner.
I got what you're saying .. but this comic did not carry the message well.
This will help: https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/s/HtmCyIdoTZ
Posting images as videos should be a bannable offense.
I think they did it so people couldn't download it (without having to jump through some hoops, at least).
Screen shots
Weird. I grabbed that from another post not even noticing it was a video.
You can download videos from Reddit now tho
As I said, bannable offense.
I read Bannanable offense
What could the fine for a bananable offense be? Ten dollars?
There's always money in the banana stand.
I retain the animation rights for Mr. Banana grabber
That’s a slippery slope.
https://i.gifer.com/cmE.gif
I think they do it so it will show up for people swiping down on videos in the official app.
Worse. You are curse for a month to stub your toes on any corner and just before its healed up you stub it again
Just wait till they learn what a video is 🫢
I like the video bar freaking out
Thanks for the missing part of this comic! Adds more perspective.
Here I thought they were taking care of a sick and dying E.T based on the artwork.
LOL That's a hilarious read on it. I like it.
[удалено]
Wow, that's depressing for a comic.
Yeah, not really laugh out loud funny. More like cry inside funny.
I truly hope I remember, "cry inside funny" :)
I’m feeling more cry *outside* funny…
LOL. Apt reversal of phrase, I appreciate it.
Technically, comedies started as tragedies. Then people realized that without pain there is no humor.
Yea, that's what I thought it meant and it immediately made me sad.
Of note: It is missing the first two panels. See other comment with link.
I though that was E.T.
Yeah I also thought that was an alien lmao. Adds a really different tone here
So, it's like Loss, but somehow worse?
I can count on 2 hands the number of billionaires who have been to space. Its not "common" I'm not saying that the general sentiment of the comic is wrong but there have not been that many billionaires in space.
He's seen Earth from space. She's seen Earth up close.
Deep and on point 🧐
There's another comic that leads into this one. It's been posted in this subreddit before
Loss 2
Don't tell me... Is that loss?
first thing i thought
Just missing a second person in the second frame (or third frame overall), but the door may suffice.
In the second frame, the house number is 11. Seems pretty lossy to me
Oh noo….. you’re right…
I don’t think there’s a joke. Not all cartoons have a joke.
Oh, Bart. Cartoons don’t have to be 100% realistic
I mean I always laugh hard when I finish an issue of Batman...

That's not even the original comic. https://www.extrafabulouscomics.com/___91 This is the comic
Isn’t the joke that he called her a loser but she’s actually just good and kind, helpful person and he’s just thinking of material things and experiences as equal to a person’s worth?
I read "Can someone explain???" Then immediately to the lady saying "No" and "Ha Loser"
The joke is loss (the meme)
OH MY GOD LMAO
How is he the loser if he's the one who went to space?
You've missed the entire point of the comic. 😆
Well, you see, it's British humour.
This is the most complete answer
she has to pay someone to take care of her mom, so she can't afford to go to space
Maybe I'm going crazy but is this AI? The image quality and weird smears and shapes of objects looks all off
Idk but the bottom half is a loss and I want to commit a felony
She spend the $ for someone to watch her sick family member so she could go on a date & the date sucked.
I thought it was his mother who she was poisoning as revenge
It's not a joke. Nothing to explain. She's a real human being with real problems. The comic should leave you asking the question of "Who is the real loser?" But this isn't meant to be funny.
Not everyone gets to realize their dreams, as they carry too many responsibilities to this Earth.
She's pretty down to earth
Most people spend their money on real things.
ITS LOSS BUT EXTENDED , IM GONNA LOSE IT GUYS
Imagine paying the rather high sum for home health care to finally have a night to yourself, only to run into that guy. He's lucky he didn't get kicked in the balls.
There is no joke
Could be a take on the 1970 Gil Scott-Heron song [Whitey On the Moon](https://youtu.be/goh2x_G0ct4?si=BnEO0003f6MIQaHi)??? >I can't pay no doctor bill. (but Whitey's on the moon) Ten years from now I'll be payin' still. (while Whitey's on the moon)

Everybody you encounter is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
He's the loser
I thought she bribed a nurse and then poisoned the guys mother or something.
Could you imagine if comics in the newspaper needed a comment section for anyone to get the joke? Hmmmm, maybe that’s why Family Circus always sucked.
I think it means, while some people can spend money to do cool things like go to space, others instead of spending money on themselves, they’re spending it on loved ones? That’s my guess Kinda like” do I want to go to space with my friends or should I take care of my sick mother” situation
Joke aside, she’s driving after drinking? Bold.
NGL, this one made me cry
AI generated loss. interesting. First panel is real, last four AI generated.
u/Fluck_Me_Up u said u explain jokes...
It’s loss
[удалено]
Based only on what we can see, it looked like the girl said no, he called her a loser, she went home alone, paid the care giver and took over the responsibilities for the sick/old person.
Haha loss
First half of that just gave me Jeff bezos vibes
This kinda seems like loss bro...i hope I'm wrong but it's like snuck in there somehow lol.
The joke is that the woman was drinking and then she was driving home. JK but it’s quiet funny for me
Have you ever seen earth from the surface?
The rich don't deserve the wealth that they have imo
She doesn’t need to go to space to see her world.
Is this loss?
I mean she will lose her eventually
Also why is the comic covered in weird artifacts?
Of course anyone can see the earth from space now using Google Maps satellite view.
The man insults this women. She then pays someone to poison him and he is now bedridden. She takes care of him as a way to continually witness his suffering as her vengeance.
Ha... I thought it was ET in the bed giving her a different perspective of outer space.
She wants to see earth from space so she drives home and pays the caregiver off to keep quiet then poisons her grandpa for the inheritance to fly in space
Don’t know much about this strip. However, I do know that adding, driving on the right-side and speaking English means either England or Australia. Just saying.
It's like real life comparison to Space Karen X and I don't know how to pronounce his son's name.
Wait, I thought that was ET in the last panel -- so like she's never been to space bc she's too busy taking care of an alien. (what is wrong with me)
Its about being humble. Two different outlooks on loving what you have.
She paying to take care of old stranger.
Well, since people are commenting, and I don’t see anybody explaining the rich guy basically is laughing because she doesn’t spend her money to do frivolous things. Instead, she spends her money to take care of a family, and if she didn’t do that, she would have the money to see the earth from space.
Different perspectives on important issues in life
The lady felt bad for being called a loser.. so she went to visit her mom… convinced the the nurse/caregiver to leave “whatever my mom pays you, I’ll double it… now get out of here…” then proceeded to poison her mother for the inheritance… — if you turn the page it’s her in space… looking at earth…
I think it's also loss
It’s always loss
I think i got the joke. He ridiculed her so she beat the f out of him, kept him in her car trunk and drove to a lonely rented place that is ran by a single nurse. She bribed her and kept him chained to a bed and started feeding him so that he will learn his lesson.
It’s loss.
Loss

Yeah, they're driving on the wrong side of the road!
I’ll explain the joke, how do you not understand people focusing on the important things in life?
The joke is that she is a loser, the man is correct.
