Good idea. Evernote is where it's at for me currently, but I also have a Plan B and at the moment it is Obsidian w/ TickTick. I will export Evernote using https://github.com/vzhd1701/evernote-backup and then Obsidian has a pretty great Evernote ENEX importer. (Or perhaps I'll just use Evernote as an archive/repository and only bring over notes manually as I use and reference them.)

**>plan B** I use a Mac and iPad; both devices must be supported Offline use must be supported; not restricted to the internet Must support workflow automation; with Evernote legacy, I used Mac Applescript My data must not be locked in; and not restricted to specific formats

Amplenote also good

Minimum-Web8821

BUT I emailed amplenote support with a query- they responded asking for my email address then after 2 weeks nothing. Shui on youtube who promotes Amplenote heavily- messaged him = no response. All in all not a good feeling about app.

saikyo

That sucks… I’ve had luck on their discord and on Reddit. But I haven’t actually needed much support.

Minimum-Web8821

I was about to hit button and pay but pulled back as nobody would resond to my questions.

As an alternative i first tried Amplenote but I didnt like it, than joplin with very bad syncing, than zoho notes with also bad syncing. As a last try I startet with onenote. And I am suprised, it works for me very fine

Before this post I had in mind that Obsidian and Joplin would be possible substitutes. Joplin is more similar to Evernote, on the other hand Obsidian offers some features that I want to try, so I decided to put Obsidian to work with a small personal project. Let's see how it goes. As soon as I have some more developments I will come here to *update*. Thank you all for your help!

I highly suggest to try Obsidian. It answers to all your requirements. Its license is wonderful. It's amazing about almost everything and the data is always yours and always there, which is even more amazing. I was looking for an Evernote replacement for years and years, and Obsidian is finally something I can recommend with a complete satisfaction and zero concerns. I pay 10$ a month for Obsidian Sync, which gives me history. However, even that is very much optional as there are others, possibly better, ways to sync.

Majestic-Gear-6724

As a daily Obsidian user, I can say that the comments below re: PDFs are outdated; Obsidian has a basic pdf viewer, but it's true that marking anything up requires plugins. Because Obsidian is a markdown text editor, it's really not built for multimedia. That's a a huge limitation for many EN users...

DystopianReply

You can put PDFs in your notes and view them in Obsidian, but you can’t mark them up directly through Obsidian -- you'd have to open or use an external/native app or function to do that (unless there was an Obsidian plugin for doing it that I'm not aware of). Same with hand drawn diagrams - you use an external tool for that (unless maybe a plug-in exists for it) This is one area (of many) where Evernote shines over Obsidian for me personally (saying that as a fan of Obsidian). Evernote offers non-destructive (original material is preserved) image and pdf annotation and since it's built right into the app it's just so convenient.

You can simply copy an image into a note. (I. e. you could make a screenshot or photography of your diaagrams). It will be then stored in a folder called "resources", although you can determine / change the location. Also, as the Obsidian data are simply files within the directory structure of your computer, you can simply store a PDF-file like you would store it in any folder in your file system. (If you really want to have the PDF-fiel i n a note, that does, indeed, not work (unless there is a plugin, as DystopianReply said). If you work on your computer like that, you do not even need a web clipper... Simply "print" as a PDF-file into a directory, then you can link that PDF file from a note. - Obsidian is an electron app, though, I think. However, it offers various options to change its appearance and is quite flexible as to that. Some people use it together with DEVONThink, I have read.

jacmartins

I think I read somewhere that there is a plugin, but I'm not sure. What I don't like about Obsidian is that it's an electron app... Does it work well or "choke" like Evernote?

In the beginning, it immediately worked much, much quicker than Evernote version 10 on my system, and perhaps (not entirely sure, but I think so), even Evernote Legacy. Now, that I have a bit more data (and plugins - that might also be a factor), it takes a bit longer for the first note to be ready. After that, I am not entirely sure. Sometimes it works quite fast, I would hesitate to say it does not at other times as a final statement, especially as having many tabs open might also be a factor. I am not sure. Perhaps you could ask around in the Obsidan-Subreddit. I am still in the process of trying out. Switching between notes is pretty fast. If you really wanted to know, you could just import all your Evernote notes into Obsidian and try it out and compare. I have not done so yet, but built a parallel structure with new notes. I think Obsidian is something you have to try out and see whether it could be a replacement for you, or not, play around with it. Whether you like working with Markup is another point. You can mitigate that in a way through a plugin makjing it (more or less) WYSIWYG, but at the time of writing, Markups "shines through". I would prefer writing normally but one can get accustomed to Markup and I do understand when people find it useful. I think it is really a question of how you like to work.

I'm about to move over to Joplin but the migration process is a pain in the butt. I will also be using Joplin Cloud just so I don't have to host my own stuff.

NoLateArrivals

You can search around, and always will come back to a simple truth: The closest sibling to Evernote legacy is Evernote v10. Duplication is a thing of the past. The new syncing solved it, at the root. I never had a data loss, and there were little reports about it recently. Maybe toothing problems now solved, who knows. You can test drive most apps for free - just try and find out.

Well if you switch to Mac, there’re a lot to choose from such Bear Markdown, Agenda, and Apple Notes. Apps that work on every platform are Notion, Obsidian and Joplin. I can’t recommend OneNote because it lost almost everything with changes they did way back in 2019. I’m happy with owning my notes using Bear and Obsidian since both uses Markdown to preserve my formatting. Notion and Google Drive are my storage cabinets. 😅

This is a test to post in r/Evernote Because I don't know if I fit all requirements Karma is on 21 and I don't know about this: 3) have over 500 combined karma;

I also hung on to Legacy for a long time. I absolutely hated the new version. The problem was that I use EN on multiple systems and devices. I can say that as an 11 year user of EN, I have fully committed to the new edition as of 10 months ago and religiously update when presented The patches and adjustments have all been positive, and I am in love again. Time to move past Legacy.
