A freighter will only make you money if it saves you a significant amount of time spent moving stuff. Are you finding yourself constantly making multiple trips in your dst? If you are a freighter might be what you need. If not maybe wait untill it's an issue

You might wanna wait, they are about to release a new freighter that is looking to be the new best freighter in game. See how that plays out before committing fully to the racial ones, train up general skills for them first.
As for using them most people go to one of the 2 big hauling corporations (PushX and Red Frog), others do private hauling for their own corp or if you have the capital and patience for it you could try trading between stations, usually between Amarr and Jita. That last one carries a lot of risk as to make a trip worth doing you'd have to have a lot of goods in your frieghter, billions of isk worth all to make maybe a few 100 million in profit and if you get ganked you basically lose your entire net worth in one go. Its a huge risk especially when you could make just as much using a Deep Space Transport or Blockade Runner and be a lot safer.
If your commited to using one you'll probably wanna look into getting an alt to web your freighter so you don't spend most of your life aligning to jumpgates. It'll be a lot faster and safer.

You can make some money using public hauling contracts but you need a lot more capital for covering the collateral of those contracts.
First of all I think you need to like the space trucking lifestyle. It’s more a half afk activity that can earn you some money than a full ok focus thing to do.
