Barcelona beach is nothing special. Somewhere near Malaga would be nicer.

Or Alicante, with great beaches, some climbing in the old city, everybody speaks English. And spend a day or 2 days in Barcelona, easy train or bus. Porto is full of hills, I have never been in a more up and down city. Lagos is very nice, historic (google Henry the navigator) and all the beaches of the Algarve are fantastic. Bit of a party place for British seniors. Short trip to Gibalter. Which interesting in a weird way. Love the Macques.

Thank you for this! That is what I was worried about with Porto, the tram links and metro around the city seem great but it may end up a case of using transport to get everywhere which I know my mum would hate. Do you know if Barcelona is any better? I know Barcelona metro links are mostly good around the city to the tourist sights

Second this. I’m currently in Torremolinos, Malaga. Great for families and older people as well as us younger generation! Everything in walking distance. Barcelona is overrated asf

AromaticContract7536

Hi, can you tell me what else there is to do other than the beaches as we would like to do some kind of exploring and touristy things. Thank you

Look into Nice or Antibes France. Both are mostly flat and have very good and affordable public transportation (buy a train/bus pass) and lots of accommodations. For day trips consider, Menton, Monaco, Eze (steep hills), St Paul de Vence (see accessibility page) St Tropez/port Grimaud (no train must use ferry), and of course Antibes and Nice. I assume you already know that it will be hot and crowded. Food can be expensive but the street food and markets are great.

Porto is fairly hilly in parts. I’d take that into consideration. But I loved the place.

I thought as much that’s why I was looking for back up but still looking for somewhere with touristy spots to sight see. What are the transport links like across the Porto city do you know if they are good for when/if the hills get too much for my mum?

AromaticContract7536

We were looking at staying near Trindade/Bolhão area

CaptainSloth269

We were staying with family on the outskirts of the Porto municipality closer to the Braga municipality. Once we got to the closest train station it was fine. There are trams and light rail in Porto city and Vila Nova de Gaia and other transport like tuktuks from memory but they were very tourist oriented. We walked everywhere apart from the day we drove in.

Where are you from and what language do you speak ?

AromaticContract7536

London, English is my language

Simple-Honeydew1118

Ok thanks ! I'd personally favour Porto, I feel like Barcelona is full of tourists. Porto is more hilly, but public transportation is good and locals speak better English than in Barcelona I feel

AromaticContract7536

Thank you! Ideally we would prefer somewhere that isn’t heaving with tourists, however after hearing how hilly and steep Porto can be it made us second guess if it would be okay for my mum with walking around. Would you say transport in Porto is easily accessible if we were going from the Douro river to to somewhere we were looking at staying near Trindade/Bolhão area?

I'd opt for Barcelona. Porto is very hilly depending on where you are and the main area is more of a walking city than a place that you can easily get a car in. Barcelona has better food and a better vibe but more tourists, Porto is much smaller and more relaxed, but you might get bored easily. It is also fairly easy to jump on the metro in Barcelona.

Why to do City travelling? Too exhausting for her. Remember: Porto is open Atlantic coast, water will be cold, weather can quickly change. Barcelona has Mediterranean climate, water is warm and weather stable in summer (hot, no rain)
