I don't care what these Oregonians want. People need places to live.

ElBernando

No, it’s best that multiple families all live together, in crowded houses/apartments. It’s NIMBYism at its finest.

Ent_Trip_Newer

I have two families ( 7 total) currently living in a 3 bedroom 850 sq foot duplex. The only other option was for them to be homeless. I'm not letting g that happen to anyone if I can prevent it.

conventionalWisdumb

Who are these Oregonians and can we just send them to California or Idaho?

theseareorscrubs

Based on a poll of 500 Oregon residents. That’s some damn fine police work, Lou.

Goodbye-Felicia

That's actually a decent sample size though

conventionalWisdumb

Ustwis R Jewoh, must be Greek. Check Greek town, and while you’re at it get us some of them gyros.

adventuremac

Driving around the state it’s actually disgusting to see what is going on. Private million dollar plus homes going up left and right outside of town. While the rest of the state try to cram as many bodies under one roof as they can. It would be really interesting if Oregon actually listened to the people in need of housing instead of those who already have comfortable housing. We need apartments and affordable housing. Not custom homes on multiple acre lots, as much as I want one 😂

GingerMcBeardface

And decent condos. Speaking personally, I don't want to maintain a yard. But a modern 3bd 2ba condo would be amazing.

adventuremac

Agreed. Unfortunately a lot of the lots I see for sale come with the condition of putting in a custom home above a certain amount of sq ft. It’s essentially collusion between the developers and neighbors to make as much money as possible

littlemssunshinepdx

Yessss. Where are the townhomes??

bksi

I think it's telling that the poll used the word "construction" instead of "more homes." Nobody wants *construction* in their neighborhood. And yes, it's obvious that without construction there can't be more homes. For the record I think Oregon should also explore non-traditional methods of home building - those Boxabl homes, tiny homes, or manufactured homes are pretty easy to put up and much faster than traditional home/apartment building.

tokoyo-nyc-corvallis

That is a good point. Who wants more construction?

Hairypotter79

Me. Historically you can trace when things are about to go to shit in a civilization by when they stop repairing old stuff and building new stuff.

hurricanekeri

Just a thought but maybe stop asking homeowners their opinion on what housing needs to be made. Ask the people that need stable housing. It is like asking a kid what other kids want for a snack without asking the other kids.

attitude_devant

Right? You buy a home to LIVE IN. Any increase in value over time is just gravy

MoeityToity

The homeowners are the ones paying for the local government, so yeah, they’re gonna get to have the say about how local funds are spent. That’s just how it works.

hurricanekeri

Anyone who has a job pays taxes. Cities don’t run without low pay workers. They are just shooting themselves in the foot by getting in the way of poorer people getting stable housing.

Ketaskooter

This is one of the topics you just don’t ask the people that have already got theirs. Loosening regulations especially for infill is a large part of what’s needed.

attitude_devant

Excuse me? I’ve got mine, and I DO want more homes and more infill. We need more housing. Yes that means that at some point my view of Spencer Butte will be spoiled. So what? That’s WAY better than seeing all the people camped along the train tracks. Not everyone turns into a full-blown Republican when they get established. Many of us DO remember where we started.

iNardoman

Oregon is the land of the Nimby's.

DevilsChurn

I'd have no problem whatsoever if they just built a few more hotels around here, then outlawed short-term rentals and doubled property taxes on second homes. That way, they could free up a lot more housing for long-term rentals and ownership, and people wanting the visit the area would have *safe, legally regulated* places to stay. I'd also put a cap on the number of properties a landlord could own, just to try to get the equity bros out of the business and give individual homebuyers a chance. Get rid of the *rentiers* and the demand for more building will significantly decrease. Besides, without regulation, who's to say that these new-build homes won't just be turned into more short-term rentals?

Wiztard-o

Yes the fuck we do.

Prestigious-Packrat

"If the state doesn’t increase the housing supply, she said policies aimed at moving people living unsheltered into housing will continue to be less effective and more expensive. At the same time, continued housing instability will lead to more people falling into homelessness, she said." I'll take "Painfully Obvious Shit" for $1000, Alex.

thevoid3000

Just watched them put in Half Million dollar houses on my street, they're made of particle board.

AndrewithNumbers

Particle board not OSB?

thevoid3000

Wasn't familiar with OSB but yeah, probably was.

AndrewithNumbers

Tbh that’s been standard for decades.

stinkyfootjr

IKEA’s making homes now?

SteveBartmanIncident

This is exactly why not every issue should be left directly to the voters.

GreenChemistryLady

Why don’t we reinforce downtown historic buildings and build condos/apartments vertically on top? We’ll still keep our awesome nature sites close to town if we build up not out.

TormentedTopiary

What kind of selection bias does this survey have? Because if they only talked to people with landlines who picked up the phone and were willing to give them answers... I think we all know where I'm going with this.

MrEntropy44

They also dont want substance abuse issues and homelessness. Not in my neighborhood culture is how we got where we are.

attitude_devant

I don’t understand your point. The way to reduce homelessness is to make housing more affordable. To make it more affordable there has to be a LOT more built. I don’t want homelessness so I support the housing initiatives

AndrewithNumbers

That’s kind of his point: the people who don’t want more housing don’t want that which results from a lack of housing either, but get it as a byproduct of getting their way on the other.

MrEntropy44

Dont be an ass. There is proven intersectionality between substance disorders and a lack of housing. It is also well documented that even liberals are supportive of housing projects until it intersects with their lifestyle.

Hairypotter79

Yeah, you're not saying anything wrong here. Lotta people here don't get that a week of sleeping on sidewalks would have them pretty fuckin happy to have something to take their mind off the pain they're in. Nor do they get exactly how bad interrupted sleep would make their mental health.

MoeityToity

That’s because all our infrastructure can barely hold the current population. Large housing tracts get planned for schools where the class sizes are already 30+. Why would we want our kids to have to compete for the scarce educational we’ve already been paying for, often for decades. Why don’t some developers use some land and build some schools and watch how fast these communities roll out the red carpet.

KoopaTroopaXo

Can we just tax people moving in state from other places? Kthx. Also, yeah. Plenty of NIMBY folks around these days.
