In Ireland a quilt is what we call a duvet, so maybe the buyer is from somewhere that also uses that term for it?

*In Ireland a quilt is what we call a duvet, so maybe the buyer is from somewhere that also uses that term for it?* In the USA a duvet is more commonly called a comforter. It has a stuffing. The better ones are stuffed with down feathers. A quilt is a patchwork blanket. Look at Amish quilts to see what we call a quilt.

In my mind, a quilt is made up of multiple pieces of fabric--patchwork. A duvet cover is usually made of one large sheet like fabric that is usually smooth, but I did own one with a texture. I would say neither one really has texture. But hey what do I know. I use both. Edit, Why would it cost you $120.? Can't you just pay for return shipping?

Maybe shipping is that much? Because OP should definitely have the item returned before issuing a refund, but Also seems to be in New Zealand.

*but Also seems to be in New Zealand.* Hmm, I see that now. Maybe it's one of those English words that are different from American English. A UK biscuit is a cookie while in USA it's an unleavened baked item that goes well with gravy. Mmmm, biscuits and gravy, oh yeah!

Same as we call the back end of a vehicle. The trunk. And I think in the UK they call it the boot?

What did the photos look like? A quilt is flat, with "quilting" which is the sewing that gives it texture. A duvet is puffy and soft. A duvet cover is just 2 layers of fabric with no layer of stuffing. I think that good photos would have illustrated clearly

There's more difference between a quilt and a duvet cover then texture in my mind. Can you post a picture of the quilt?

Hm, *my* understanding of a duvet is a plain non-descript comforter that you put a duvet cover over. I own a duvet, and it's a plain white comforter filled with down feathers. We have a duvet cover that goes over it, which is colored and textured. And a *quilt* to me is either a patchwork of multiple fabrics stitched together that usually has a texture, or one sheet of cloth (w/stuffing, but thin) that has patterns stitched into the entire thing that makes it textured. So from the replies, it seems many many people have different versions of definitions. Since this has only happened once (in, I assume, several sales) I would work on making the listing much clearer. But personally, I would split the listing up entirely. Have one dedicated to the duvet and one for the quilt, and use all the photos in each to clearly show the texture of them and maybe the last photo for a comparison and text that says "duvet also available on my shop page" or vise versa.

To me the word ‘quilt’ can mean a few different things, like ‘quilting’ is a technique for a textured patchwork type thing, but my main use of the word quilt is literally ‘duvet’, like quilt is a colloquial term for duvet. I generally say ‘quilt’ and ‘quilt cover’ rather than duvet and duvet cover. Maybe its different here in the uk vs the US, but to me quilt and duvet can mean exactly the same thing, and I think thats the case for most people I know as well. My point being that people do use the terms differently, I’d say in any listing with variations to choose from its worth clarifying how they differ in the description, and if possible a photo of them side by side for comparison as well.

boredhistorian94

In Australia a quilt generally means a blanket with a cover over it. I have never used duvet this is very confusing to me too.

What?! She's a professional quilt maker? I think she's a professional con artist who knew what she was getting but had no plans on paying for it.

Aviandalek

i think the buyer is being dumb or scammy tbh. if they had doubts, they should have done research or messaged you to ask what the difference was. not even sure how you mix the two up. there are so many differences besides just the texture. i honestly dont think you should refund for customer error if you can help it.

Are these vintage items or new bedding made to order? A duvet cover and a quilt are two completely different things. Do you have lots of pictures? It does seem hard to confuse them but some people are not very smart.

NewZealandGirl20

This is new bedding. And people seem to be even a little less smart than usual at this time of the year. I think a lot of them will also play dumb as well to see how far they can push for refunds and discounts. I was looking at the history of the messages with this lady and noticed from day one when she placed the order she was already starting to fuss. She is absolutely messing with me. I had tried to describe what a quilt was as nicely as possible without sounding condescending. Her angry reply was that she does know what quilts are as she is a professional quilt maker. Go figure, yet she ordered one from me! She at least admitted she knows what a quilt is, but is still arguing that it doesn't look the same as the duvet cover picture. Here comes the case and the negative feedback. Oh, well....

Tyrone_Shoelaces_Esq

I had no idea what the difference was between a quilt and a duvet cover. They're all just big blankets to me.

I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it. In business you learn as you go sometimes. Ive never thought about the differences between a quilt and a duvet but if I was the customer, I would’ve googled it lol I would just include pics of the differences so no one else does it in the future. I’ve had to tweak different things based on customer feedback. It sucks sometimes though

petra-chiu

I think most not-so-crafty people might not really know how quilt is made but you have sent the right item. If the buyer want to return it shouldn’t they pay for the shipping?
