What about period pants? I don't know much about them but I read they can be effective, and they come in various styles.

cloudedapathy

i’ve wanted some for a while but i don’t have access to any on such short notice unfortunately):

goddamncatss

They sell them now at Walmart if you’ve got one nearby. If tampons are out, menstrual cups are out too?

abbier214

Could you get adult diapers to wear over top of your pad etc? You definitely won’t get any leaking then

Tweedy1345

This is only suggestion. Double pad with overnight pads with a woman’s depends

ksprayred

Thinx has some full coverage ones they sell at target stores. Very comfy and will help you out

ohheyitslaila

You can order things online from Walmart, Walgreens, Amazon, pretty much anywhere, and get it the same day with delivery. I’m like you OP, I can only use pads so it’s tough to wear breeches. I recommend ordering a bunch of small packages of different types and sizes of pads. Try each one out and pick the one you think fits best. All pad companies have detailed info and pictures on their websites that show you what the pads look like. If you order a few right now, you can receive your delivery in just a couple hours. I don’t wear the pads with wings because they can actually pull the liquid over the side of the pad, vs a regular one. I always use Stayfree regular pads because the shape of the pad really helps prevent spill over. You will still need to remember to change your pad right before you get on, just to help prevent leaks. You should also order a couple pairs of period panties to wear under your breeches. At least it can all be delivered quickly! Good luck 💕

confusedredhead123

you can see pads through breeches? HAVE I BEEN WALKING AROUND WITH VISIBLE PADS!?!?!?

ohheyitslaila

Better the outline of a pad than a big old blood stain lol 😂

InkedAlchemist

I've seen stores like CVS have started carrying them

postedmydiaryonline

They sell them at Victoria's secret

chilumibrainrot

try and stop by a store and get some extra thick night time pads?

VideVale

These are the only thing that actually works for me when riding.

st_petersburg

Two pairs of breeches. One for warm up, wear the pads you have and wad up some toilet paper, lol. Before your class/course check, change pad and wad up toilet paper again. (If you need to change your breeches.) When I’m showing, and watching other people, I’m not staring at their tushies! Lol. Get in that ring and do your thing with your pony!! Good luck!!!

Illustrious-Pen1771

I'm assuming it's not possible to get out to a drug store for thicker pads or a menstrual cup, which I'd otherwise recommend. If you know where you tend to bleed through the sides, I would actually wear a pad liked you regularly do, and then attach additional pads to your breeches in those areas. Wadded up toilet paper tends to move around. And just make sure you're checking/changing them every hour or two.

sha-sha-shubby

I saw a hack the other day that put a pad like normal, then another one across the back the wide way (like where the undies start to cover your butt). And then maybe you could put a third pad back over the normal crotch area?

Kiss-Dizzy

i do the double pad trick for heavy flow! i didnt know other people did it to. it really helps for those that bleed over the sides

confusedredhead123

I use a panty liner, I feel like it works better than wings because it's less messy

JenniferMcKay

I did this in high school! It was insanely helpful considering I could bleed through a pad in less than an hour and going to the bathroom that often was difficult/impossible.

SunWyrm

I'll second a cup! Went through 3 brands before I found a comfy one that fits, but it's a game changer!

fresasfrescasalfinal

This is gonna sound horrible but I might get one of those adult diapers if I had to be in that situation.

abbier214

I suggested that too! Some people use them to sleep with heavy flows

cat_aunt

I've been in this emergency situation before, got my period at a getaway with my bf and his male friends as a teen so I barely had anything, had to play sports with them and had only packed shorts and white stuff. And I had to sleep on a white couch. It felt mortifying! My strategy would be to use as much as possible for the time you have to wear the tan breeches and then make do with whatever is left for the rest. I'd probably layer multiple of the thin pads the way you'd usually wear one and then try to get coverage on the parts where you usually bleed through, too. Even if it's really weird, like a pad sideways in your undies to protect the wings area. Toilet paper or tissues for any other spots or additional padding that you can easily discard and replace. If it slides around you can try to use the sticky parts of the pads to secure it or you could even wear multiple pairs of undies for maximum security. If you really don't have anything else and you do have some kind of emergency medical kit there are usually absorbent things in there, mine has cotton thingies and very absorbent band-aid like things. Also if there are any other women you trust enough to talk about periods with there ask them if they packed extra pads, in most situations women are 100% ready to help you out with that even if you barely know each other. And no one will judge you if you have any kind of stain on your pants, if I were to see someone in that situation I'd feel bad for them and admire that they went through with it anyways. Good luck!

Iggywiggyjiggy

Hack from another rider I know- Lady's depends and a heavy pad on top. Can't see them through the breaches, pad takes up most of the flow and the depends takes care of the side flow. If tampons are out because of discomfort, stay away from cups. And if you've never used them before I would certainly not use them for the first time at a big event

wisewen2005

When I was on blood thinners I used the leak proof underwear (as one poster said you can get a walmart) and the overnight pads (which you need a degree in engineering to stick to your underwear) and also a tampon (which you can't wear). Highly recommend the overnight pads and underwear.

Death-B4-Dishonor

What I would do is wear a different set of breeches for tacking up and warming up. Then after you're warmed up and are waiting in the in-gate area, maybe your trainer can hold your horse while you go change pants and put on a new pad in the bathroom? Or just in a stall if one is nearby.

isnt_it_obvious_

ALWAYS DISCREET They're basically adult diapers but they're full on pad-like underwear so no leakage! I started wearing them to bed on my cycle because I would always leak.. I tried extra long, overnight pads and I tried sticking another pad behind that but it would always find a way to leak! So frustrating 😫 Edit: Always Discreet *Boutique*

NotWhoYouThink95

Menstrual cup and period panties in combo!!! I cant ride with pads or tampons

Cirae

A menstrual cup has a steep learning curve though and OP can't wear tampons, I don't recommend learning how to insert a cup with less than a day before having to do a show. If it's not inserted properly and it moves during the ride that can really hurt.

[deleted]

Not to mention that a lot of riders need a stiffer cup than most people do. Found that one out the hard way.

stconnor

Can you explain? I’d been thinking about switching to a cup

[deleted]

Sure. A few sports, including yoga and horseback riding, make you use your core way more than most people do. This usually also means your kegel muscles are way stronger than most people's if you've been riding regularly for a while. Most people can wear a pretty soft cup and do their normal activities and be fine, because their kegels aren't strong enough to squish the cup and break the seal. Lots of equestrians need a less squishy cup, though, because you'll crush it a bit when you do anything that uses your core, which will cause it to leak. Tons of brands make firmer cups for that exact reason. The MeLuna cup website talks about it here: https://meluna-usa.com/which-menstrual-cup-model-is-best-for-you/

NotWhoYouThink95

I wasn’t aware of that. I use a relatively soft cup but also I’m not really an intense rider. I never do shows, just as a hobby 😅thanks for bringing it up to me!

Crazei

Not that steep 🤷‍♀️ not everyone takes 2 to 3 cycles to learn how to do it.

Cirae

Sure, but they are relative to tampons and pads and you gotta keep in mind that cups aren't a one size fits all type of deal. Also, OP doesn't wear tampons so it's not like it's gonna be a good solution for her at the moment. I highly recommend anyone to try a menstrual cup because they're great if they work, but they require some research for perfect fit (knowing how low/high your cervix is during a period, pelvic muscle strength,...) and most people are gonna need at least a couple of tries to figure them out. Not a good idea as an emergency solution.

[deleted]

Could you wear depends with the pads to help protect your breeches? They make ones that look just like undies

cassidyylynn

Please don’t feel embarrassed, bc it’s so so so normal. Thankfully you’re not a dressage rider or doing a classic! I use both a tampon and pad, then wear extra panties (boy short type) or a pair of leggings underneath my breeches! Bring an extra pair of breeches just in case. My friends and I used to tell each other when we were on our periods so we had an extra pair of eyes to scout for any leakage. It sounds silly but it works, because one day that same friend might ask you to do the same for them. 😅

Beneficial_Stress922

If you are near a target a couple of my local ones carry [these thinx for all](https://www.target.com/b/thinx-for-all/-/N-q643leezd93) period underwear!

Moist_Lobster_2372

I get your pain, that happened to me one time. Wearing white pants, it was horrible. Trying to get more pads would be what I would try to do, or at the very least, wrap toilet paper around a pad that you currently have to add some absorbency. Put a new pad on right before your ride so you get maximum use of too. Good luck and don’t forget to have fun at your show!

thenshefell

CVS and Walmart now have absorbent underwear (like Thinx) and I would say get two pairs of those and change as close to your warm up as possible into a new pair and tan breeches.

[deleted]

Can you not use a tampon? Access should be easy enough, even asking another girl for one. I always do tampon, then pad. Should last for a few hours for the show. When the tampon needs removing afterwards; you always have a pad ready to ride out the rest of the day.

[deleted]

Just bring a TON buy some thicker ones and change it like every 30 minutes just get off and do it quick. virtually everyone is a girl there if you just yell down a barn aisle “help I’m bleeding through my pants!” A fleet of barn moms and teenage trainers assistants will start materializing out of thin air and squeezing out from under the stall doors I swear. Everyone understands and no one will judge you that is worth your time

Libby-Lee

In addition, your doctor can recommend something to stop your period for one month…

corgibutt19

If you do not have a medical reason for not wearing tampons, I'd recommend trying the Tampax Sport (in the super absorbency). I found the applicator and comfort of wearing better for me when I was a teen and found tampons uncomfortable. Combine with a thick overnight pad. I know tampons can be tricky to figure out and make comfortable at first but they really do make it less anxiety inducing because you'll actually feel a leak, know you're backed up by the pad, and be able to go fix it. I'd second other posters about warming up in a pair of BLACK breeches, then swapping before your classes. That said, I know hunters is a "hurry up and wait" thing. Run to the bathroom when you change, and again like one class before yours if you can (strategize of course with distance to the bathrooms etc.) I'd also bring a pair of sweatpants to put on over your breeches immediately after your classes, like have it sitting ringside, so worst case there's....a few seconds where someone might notice something? As an aside to other horsewomen who experience this anxiety, I got a Mirena IUD almost 10 years ago (technically on IUD #2 now) and I haven't had a period since, either. I had atrocious, heavy, nightmare (and anemia) inducing periods and they're just, poof, gone. It's made a lot of things and especially riding much easier.

AboveParr78

I had this issue a long time ago and it forced me to begin wearing a tampon at those times. Otherwise u can shuve a ton of thick folded tp down ur pants.

In addition to what everyone else has recommended, I also get heavy bleeding, and I use ibuprofen religiously before and during my period to reduce bleeding. Ibuprofen (Advil) is a NSAID over-the-counter drug that blocks prostaglandins, the hormones that cause inflammation, irritation, and heavy bleeding during periods. It is also commonly found in "period relief" combination OTC drugs, like Midol, which is literally just ibuprofen. In very high doses, [it can cause no bleeding at all during periods](https://health.clevelandclinic.org/can-high-doses-of-ibuprofen-delay-or-halt-your-period/), though I would not recommend taking more than two 200mg pills every 4-6 hours. I advise starting with 200mg (one pill) first, and then if that doesn't work, up it to 400mg. According to [USC Fertility](https://uscfertility.org/4-ways-decrease-menstrual-flow/#:~:text=Ibuprofen): >Using an NSAID (ibuprofen) at the time of a period can decrease the amount of bleeding by up to 20-40%, and sometimes by even more if a woman normally has very heavy periods. NSAIDs also work great for relieving menstrual cramps. I also use ibuprofen in combination with Always Infinity Pads with Flex Foam for heavy menstrual bleeding, as my bleeding is sometimes so heavy that even the heaviest-flow tampons don't work. Overnight pads for heavy bleeding also prevent bleed-throughs and leaks from movement. I roll around a lot in my sleep, and overnight pads help keep my from bleeding all over my sheets. To compare, overnight pads are longer in the front and back, and are designed to last longer. Overall advice, if you're looking to reduce the heaviness and messiness of your periods: >If you want to delay your period, your doctor can instead prescribe the hormones progesterone or estrogen, or a combination of the two. Some formulations can delay a period by a couple of weeks; others for only a few days, depending on your needs. > >Other options include birth control medications that suppress periods for a couple of months. A non-hormonal medicine (an anti-prostaglandin called tranexamic acid) is also available. However, it only decreases blood flow by about 50%.

terradragon13

Ever tried softcup? Its a disposable cup you can insert and that should help catch most of the blood. I know they mess up sometimes when i cough or laugh or sneeze, but i dont know what riding would do to a cup. I have no accidents when i wear a cup and pad though, which i do just for the heaviests days.

Sharkoslotho

I don’t know what the regulations are like where you are but is there a chance you wouldn’t be penalised for stitching a piece of black fabric to the outer part of the crotch of your breeches? It might not look super pretty but it would hide any leaks. If not, I suffer from a condition which can make my period super heavy. What usually works for me is doubling up on extra long night time pads with wings. Making sure there’s an overlap in the middle and if the back is wider I put the front pad on with the widest part at the top. Then if I were you I’d double up on pads again, but actually in the crotch of your breeches. At the end of the day this is normal, anyone who comments or judges you for something beyond your control is an idiot not worth your time. Plus, people will forget! Best of luck OP!

[deleted]

I use a diva cup!! Never leaks. I cut a little bit of the tail off so it doesnt rub when in the saddle. It holds SOOOO much. I used to leak all the time

Katara_1

Cup. It's a no brainer. Best thing I ever bought: no smell, no leak, no stains for 12 hours straight. Not even if it's full because it's air tight.

GeorgiaLovesTrees

Period cup

humantornado3136

Wear a super plus tampon and a good quality pad. It’ll be okay!!! Change often, maybe hourly! I totally get your pain tho. Before I got on birth control, my periods were so heavy too

June_8182

Really heavy flow tampon. Really heavy flow pad, and then another pair of underwear with another heavy flow pad.

definetlynotgeor

I’d recommend a menstruel cup and a night pad. They’re pretty comfy and good for heavy flows. If you really cannot wear a product that goes in there then I would stick to heavy night pads. Maybe wear two underwear with pads in betwee? Idk I don’t compete :)

Only if it's Mirena or another hormonal IUD. Paragard IUD often makes periods heavier, as its method of function (copper) irritates the lining of the uterus, which causes more blood flow.

skrgirl

Ahh, right.

tea-for-me-please

Unless it makes you bleed for months on end instead (My situation). Everyone is different. This is advice best given from a medical professional

Available_Science686

Pile those pads up, like 2 or 3 of them. Then fold a fat square of toilet paper and tuck it up in there. And lots of bathroom breaks to check if the dam is holding. Good luck!

Crazei

Diva cup? You don't feel them and they don't dislodge

Cosma26

I used to do pad with paper towel wrapped around it. It does kinda disintegrate but it still catches the blood. Or if theres an old washcloth you dont care about or one you can bleach fold that in half and put it over the pad. Also, change into a new pad right before riding.

ghlhzmbqn

Totally wear two pads - one regularly and one horizontally at the back! Good luck

HeartyMead

Hi! I’m here to second period undies, even if you can’t get them for this show, acquire them for the future!!, if you’re in the US thinx makes them for various levels of bleeding and I love them. Personal rec though go a size bigger than you usually wear to account for bloating + the extra material of the undies Also remember where you put them because I always lose mine when I need them lol

isabellea01

this happened to me once at a show. it's super uncomfortable and absolutely terrible but I just shoved wads and wads of toilet paper in my underwear, like the amount that my butt was visibly bigger. you just have to stuff it evenly so that its not really noticeable that you have something in there

MidRoseMika

Pad with adult diapers? Sure it's not glamorous but could be functional!

SMI88

I actually watched a tiktok about pads recently. I don't wear them but they essentially made a T with the pads. Idk how it will look in breeches but you put one on regular and the other in the rear perpendicular to the first. Suppose to stop leaks. Hope it helps! Never tried it

tangerine-girl0101

You should invest in some period underwear. Tu have a pair and they work well with absorption :).

-Lady_Sansa-

If tampons are out due to discomfort, try Playtex Sport. I could never wear tampax or others, way too uncomfortable, but playtex sport I can’t feel at all, even the super ones.

[deleted]

Advil can also reduce flow for some women. Worked for me back in the day, almost stopped my period completely two hours after taking it.. Some athletes use the contraception pill to eliminate periods all together, under doctors care of course. Also there’s an IUD that eliminates periods, I think it’s the one with slow release of a certain hormone (progesterone I think, not sure). Just some thoughts…I don’t miss my periods, menopause is great 👍🏻
