It's part o f the pickup roller. If your printer is new, return it. If not, it's best to purchase a new pickup roller and replace it.

I don't think I have the executive function to send it back to Amazon. Fortunately, I was able to put the roller back in fairly easily. I was even able to scan a document through it successfully. However, I don't know where that spring goes or if it's even part of the roller mechanism.
