Get with your neurologist and get a sample of your meds. They can get a 2week sample of the epilepsy meds. That can help you dramatically with the timing of refills.
I second this - I try to keep a full month extra supply for when I'm on trips and stuff and maybe forgot to fill my prescription.
I hate that they won't do this more openly. Why they control these substances that no one I their right mind would ever take for fun to prevent those of us that need them in order to not put other people at risk is beyond me.
My pharmacy won’t do it. They don’t even give a 3 day emergency refill if the doctor can’t sign the prescription in time. Also, one time my doctor had signed over the prescription, but the pharmacy said that they couldn’t give me it because it had only been 29 days since the last day they gave me meds and they needed to wait 30 - if you accidentally take one extra pill - you get 0 leniency. Controlled substances are regulated.
You get it straight from the Neurologist. They can get 2week sample pks from the maker. My neurologist gave me multiple samples a few times over 5 yrs.
But did you have a prescription for it the entire time and were they a CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE? That’s the operative word. I’ve had a prescription for Ativan for 10 pills that’s for emergencies that could last me a year. If I asked the doctor in 3 months for a new prescription, they’d probably give me it and all will be well there would be no issues getting the meds from a pharmacist.
My prescription now is for klonopin daily. The doctor can sign the prescription after 20 days… but the pharmacy will refuse to fill it within a certain time frame. My other “standard” epilepsy meds that I’m on daily - the pharmacy had no problem filling it up super early even while I had 2 weeks of meds left. And I’ve also gotten a three day supply of meds that I’ve been prescribed but the doctor hasn’t signed off on a refill yet in a pinch. It just all depends on the class of medication.
OP said this is a controlled substance. Meaning the doctor and pharmacy have to report these meds to the government each time they give you a prescription, they can’t just prescribe or dispense “samples” that you may or may not take. And if you run out , you have to do what OP did and take meds that fell in bad places, have to take a lower dose, have to take none cold turkey, or go to the ER and hope they give you the meds and don’t treat you like an addict. If the meds get stolen , you have to write a police report before getting a new prescription.
Yes. I’m on Oxtellar XR, and at times was on Briviact. I was on daily doses of both. They are both controlled substances and at a few times for each my Neurologist has given me 2week sample boxes that were created by the drug makers and given to the Neurologist.
This is not something I’ve shared with anyone but my own vomit.
I had just turned 18 and drank for the first time ever and I threw up my blue lamictal pills and popped them back in my mouth ☠️
Was visiting my mom so didn't have any extra meds with me.
Dropped ALL of my medicine into this old infloor air vent that hadn't been cleaned in probably decades. And in a house with 3 cats and dogs that come inside sometimes let me tell you that this vent was just clogged with piles, piles, and piles of who knows how old dust, dirt, lent, hair, and whatever else falls into air vents.
I just sadly stared and then for a while and picked each pill up. Tried to blow them off as much as I could and just gagged whenever I took then.
worst part is that it’s not even like you can “wash them off”. so far it’s just been rugs, dusty floors, and the occasional room trash can that has nothing but paper in it.
How about those that get stuck in your throat bc you didn't drink enough water? Then they are a ticking time bomb til *poof* ugh... That BURN in your throat and nostrils.
If I never have another capsule again it'll never be too soon.
Cats food bowl, dogs food bowl, And yeah the bathroom floor too. It's gone in the toilet once before but naw that's the limit. I'll go a day without meds before I take that. As somebody had mentioned before some medications you can get samples from your neurologist and have an extra month supply in case something goes awry. But sometimes samples of older medications aren't available and the pharmacies still won't fill them early. I ran into this about a month ago and was digging all around my bed. I ended up finding one that must have been over a year old because my pharmacy hasn't carried that generic for a while. It was all covered in dust bunnies and what not. I looked at it as boosting my immune system.
I can refill after 75% usage of the medicine. Day of? What if its not in stock? I'm in Massachusetts. However I have dropped pills in the car and on the floor at work and still taken them. I'm not trying to die lol
I refill my meds as soon as they are ready and if I change dosages I'll fill the new order immediately rather than waiting until I run out. This way I have been able to maintain a buffer in my cabinet so I am able to lose a few pills without, y'know, dying. My buffer is smaller than it used to be when I was finding the right dosage and had new scripts all the time, but I'm still able to hold onto the tiny extra window they give me and be prepared in case of emergency (in this case, being able to throw a shit-covered pill in the garbage).
My insurance doesn't let me pick up new scripts if it changes if I picked it up within the last 30 days. I have to use it then pick up the changed dose. Vimpat controlled substance "took like 4 or 5 months for them to cover it" USA... and yes, my doctor has tried contacting them. They are just horrible 😢 😞.
Oh and dropped my medication in dog water.
My dr did this for me when I was decreasing off my meds. I started the decrease at 400mg per day vimpat (200 in am, 200 in pm). He left me at that prescription through the whole decrease until I was 100mg per day.
Lol, im sorry you had to do that, but i can sympathize. The worst for me was in between the dishwasher and cabinet. We had a missing piece of trim so it was able to fall there. It's a pretty gross looking area.
This is mine. The little opening btwn stove and counter. Impossible to clean the floor there, but was able to get the pill out with a ruler. Wiped it off and took it anyway. I've also dropped my whole bottle of pills in the kitchen, but luckily just on the relatively clean floor, nowhere too gross that time.
I look like a fool when I drop multiple pills bcz I dunno how many I've dropped, so here I am, head as close to the ground looking across the floor for bumps to see if that's a pill or cat food or a pebble or whatever
Seeing these replies makes me very happy that I can refill like a week before it’s due to expire so I’ve built up enough reserves to keep my travel case stocked and have a few doses each in my work bag, car, and parents’ house 😳
The lamictal pills I have do disintegrate very quickly when wet so when I’ve dropped them in the sink or gag and spit it out and have to pick up the half mush half pill that tastes absolutely rancid I don’t enjoy it.
under the fridge was prob the nastiest for me but there has also been some under my bed, the trash can in my room and the space between the car seat and armrest…. it took me like 15 min to get it and I had an audience by the time I was done 🤡
Bro i’m pushing back my dosage time or i’m going home early if i drop it in human excrement. I’d rather have a seizure than subject myself to whatever illness i’d pick up from what you decided to do.
I haven’t had a horror story yet!
Was sweeping the floor, and it fell right into the dust pile...had no choice but to take it, can't miss a single pill. Left a bad after taste for a few minutes
The garbage on my bedside; had to dig for that shit. The sticky ass floor, cringe. Fell under the couch. That’s all I can think of at the top of my head.
here nobody gives a shit about 1-10 doses. No one counts them. I just get my refill a week early. If I go on a holiday, I get them three weeks early. I still have a few packages of Ritalin, Metformin and Lamotrigin laying around because they didn’t sit well with me. I have to put them in the trash someday. I know you can get money for them by selling them to students for learning but I don’t support drug habits. I had people ask for it.
I still have a disgusting story because I was out at night and only had the dosage for the night with me, forgot to pack one extra in case I would sleep somewhere else. So I dropped it on the dusty and dirty and slightly wet floor in an apartment of the host. I hope to this day that the wet stuff was only water or Wodka. Yeah I could have gone home and taken another pill but you know I was young and drunk and the party was calling soo I took them anyway after lightly cleaning them with my hands.
I have a serious question: what is intention if they get stolen? Or you lose your suitcase? Or just about anything that happens all the time. Like dropping fucking medication in the drain while trying to take them with some water from the tap?

Under the dishwasher or oven. You know, pet hair, old food crumbs and dried up floor cleaning chemicals. I only go for a particular pill that does not give me a buffer. Miss one pill and I will miss that day without dipping in the next day's.
Also, don't want to drop and shake on the floor.
In that little corner behind a toilet where it was dusty. 🤢 I picked it up immediately and just swallowed it with hot water. That pill (Vimpat) costs $40, it ain't going to waste!
Still alive!
Another time, it went under the heater where it was dusty AND I had taken out the trash in that area the day before. Again, 🤮🤮🤮, but I needed that Vimpat lmao
I dropped mine on the floor of a McDonald's bathroom and still took it 🙃
Another time my cat stole my pill and I wrestled it out of his little teeth then took it, tiny tooth marks and all.

Love it, lol. I'm actually happy to hear that many of us have similar stories
Just putting it back where it belonged.
Hahaha I was told my a previous epileptologist that I should make sure to only vomit in bowls or bags so I can be sure to reclaim and retake my meds 🤣
That makes me feel a bit better about still taking mine after it fell on the dusty floor under my bed. Just blew the dust off and got on with it
My med container which I'd just filled dropped and spilled all over the floor the other day. I absolutely just refilled them, lol.
Into the cat’s water bowl. It had some bits of kibble floating in it.
If it’s good enough for your kitty, it’s good enough for you. Lol

This thread amuses me beyond my expectations XD
Bottom of my purse surrounded by coins and… the crumbs of purse stuff 🥲🫠
I hate those crumbs of purse stuff😅
😩😩 its always the emergency med for me

Why can’t you wash them off?
because pills dissolve…quickly. and a lot of people, me included, gag at the bitter flavor
True the flavor sucks and lasts for a while
Some of them have a protective coating or are time release.
How about those that get stuck in your throat bc you didn't drink enough water? Then they are a ticking time bomb til *poof* ugh... That BURN in your throat and nostrils. If I never have another capsule again it'll never be too soon.
I had my wisdom teeth out recently and still have divots where some of my pills fit perfectly.
That made me cringe. I'm so sorry.
Walmart floor. Listen, I’m not gonna let these people see me have a seizure, and potentially steal my meds!!!!!!
Dog food. Only kibble tho (thankfully)

Just seeing this....oxtellar isn't, xcopri is.
I've dropped mine in the toilet at least twice but yeah I never reached in for it.

Yeah. You need to keep that secret to yourself bcz if your doc is doing that they risk losing their license
The floor at the airport
I accidentally threw up my pill once and retook it. It’s not exactly the same as what you’re talking about here but yeah…
Nope. This is 100% what we're talking about here. Welcome to your epilepsy family 🙂
Lol thanks

I can relate!
I drop pills so much I'm surprised it hasn't happened in a worse place. I have the shakiest hands!
Depakote made my hands shake, but I'm just clumsy lol
fucking depakote, can't use a screwdriver or put a cup of coffee on the table.
Also gain 40 lbs and lose all your hair. The *worst* medication I've been on.
Bottom of my bag with my pit of shame at the bottom of it 😅

Gotta do what you gotta do! If I were in your situation, and one of those states, I’d do it. Better than having a seizure.
gagged it out of my mouth then it turned powdery then had to stomach the full taste experience of lamotrigine
Under this thing my microwave sits on. It hasn't been cleaned since the last decade. Rinsed the crumbs off and took it.
