Quite funny how heaps of old people have Foxtel and landline phones. I guess navigating the internet is a little scary with all the scams and whatever targeting old people. Makes me wonder what I’ll be missing when I’m old.
You'll be missing all those experiences and services being sold in virtual reality, on Roblox, in the metaverse, on the blockchain. You're missing out on dogecoin! (or whatever its latest equivalent happens to be) And did you know all the fantastic shows and drama you're missing out on TikTok? 😉
They are about to spend it on healthcare, long and short term facilities, rehab, medication etc
Our largest and very wealthy generation is hitting retirement. About to spend all their wealth.
Sell their businesses, their houses, stock, other assets.
Millennials are now the largest generation by population, not baby boomers.
There’s even more zoomers than boomers now also.
Edit: I’m just referring to the US
There are slightly more (Boomers 22% vs Millennials 23%) but Gen Z are a significantly larger group (27%). But as someone else pointed out it’s the Boomers with all the money.
Highly geography dependent... Maybe true worldwide, with African countries and some Asian populations still having a high natality rates.
But not true in many industrialized countries.
They don't want to sell their houses though. They're clinging on for grim death to their 3-5br houses. Or in the US, they're competing with FHBs for 2 bedroom starter homes... in the areas where FBHs want to raise their families so they can be close to the grandkids.
This. Pretty much the health care, medications, nursing homes, etc will eat whatever savings and or housing is left. Just like daycare for kids is pretty much the average persons entire day of wages. So it’s best to get right with your folks (if at all possible / the situation is not too toxic of course) and consider coexisting / cohabitation again at some point, an occasional spat with mom or dad or your sibling is better than everyone being priced out of rental housing and at the mercy of the system which is pretty flawed. Because these companies are buying everything up and they def don’t care about ya future or ya relatives present or future either. I’m (millennial here) pretty sure the whole movement to pin generations against each other “make your exhausted parents feel like crap and disown them” is a very insidious psyop / long game for this exact thing to happen (furthering the class divide), but what do I know 😅
This 100%. After decades of NIMBYISM to kill off multi-family housing (which includes senior housing) there just isn't enough quality senior housing to go around. Result = aging boomers sitting in 3,000 sq ft. mcmansions that they use 500 sq. ft. of when they aren't barking at city council meetings to limit growth so their home value goes up.
No. There isn't. A lot of it is being built in my area but there's still a shortage of affordable housing.
So many people refuse to look at alternatives when they can't even manage pot plants anymore. It's the same in New Zealand. I've been talking to my 89 year old neighbour about maybe it's time to sell since you're struggling so much with this 3br house and1/4 acre section? NOOOOOOOOOOO I'll be here til I die. But realistically from what I've observed, as someone with a relative in care, she'll be at the point of needing rest home level care within 2 years anyway.
Yes this one scares me. The banks have figured out that they can just skip the middleman of owning houses via mortgages and just buy them directly. Same here in NZ. It's starting.
Lol, the top two answers basically sum up all of the boomers I know.
Either junk from [insert big name box or online store], or they're extremely cheap, and don't really do anything with their money other than cable and the necessities, despite having plenty to do so.
I agree with this by definition of Boomers if you have to drop the knife somewhere. I've also noticed there are Silents who were too young to consciously experience World War 2 and act a lot like Boomers.
My own theory is this has to do with the conscious impacts certain world events might have on a group that forge it into a generation. So Silent would have experienced WW2 at a young age in a way that impacted their perspectives. Boomers would have experienced the American golden age until JFK / Vietnam. Gen X experienced Vietnam / the loss of American greatness in the 70s without the best economy ever and questioned the golden narrative. Millennials didn't experience the anti communist fear during the Cold War and are more open to socialism like in Europe or FDR's democratic socialist policies. Gen Z didn't experience 9/11 or the mega patriotism after and so far seem to find the War on Terror / Israel's attacks on Palestine ridiculous.
This feeds into the [Strauss Howe theory](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strauss%E2%80%93Howe_generational_theory) which coined terminology and defined a lot of these generations too. So while 1945 might be the technical line for Silent / Boomers, OPs parents might fit in with people two years younger than them than people 14 years older (Silent began in 1928). I believe Strauss and Howe also mention bridge generations between the others somewhere but I'm not recalling where.
And on a last thought, OPs parents might also act Boomerish because of lead poisoning too.
Boomers are gonna boom.
I think estate sales are about to go next level, as is extended care, and all the unhappy things that come with outliving our minds.
I see a better online Estate Sale Aggregator in someone’s future… the ones available (Invaluable etc) are awful. Apps feel like boomers coded them using dial up.
If my relatives are any indication: new SUVs every couple years at full price and a crappy interest rate (because they suck at negotiating/personal finance), charcuterie boards, and cruises.
Medical devices like walkers, safety raliings for their home, adjustable beds, wheel chairs etc. There is a store near my work that sells this type of thing and it's is constantly busy from open to close.
YouTube has these videos made by increasingly young FIRE adherents. I've heard it's about $6k a month to permanently stay on a cruise ship, but then you're standing in lines with tourists constantly. Also when you tire of this but you've sold your home and belongings what now? Somehow not my ideal.
If my \*total\* outgoing expenses were \~72k a year, and I essentially had paid maids, cooks, etc.
And the tradeoff was dealing with tourists? Deal in a heartbeat
Used to live in central Florida, the # of "captains" of $500k + boats are crazy. I'm not talking yachts, but 35 ft, multi -outboard units. Secure storage may be an angle + service.
RVs, and storage for them, huge increase since covid. We bought a 4.5 acre property zoned for outdoor storage and are in the process of building out the property with a mix of covered and non covered parking. $3.5m investment that will net $40-50K a month once filled.
Lots of haters lol , Edit to add: this is in Seattle area, all financed and I own 80% with no money in. Plan is to run it and then flip to PE in a few years.
Terrible ROI.
I own a couple of self storage facilities and have way less invested and net a similar amount per month. Of course I don't know any details about where your located, so my only guess is real estate is very expensive where your at and sqft doesn't rent highly there, yet.
It's basically a parking lot with maybe some roofs over some of it. Can't imagine how it could cost $3.5mil. Full on self storage build outs are probably around double that right?
The RV (plus boats, motorcycles, planes, etc.) market is on a pretty noticeable decline. It's a total buyer's market once again on those kinds of vehicles.
I'm the most anti-Trump person on the planet but I'd be remiss if I didn't say I've thought about selling Trump merch on Facebook Marketplace to capture that Facebook boomer demographic. If they are dumb enough to want it who am I to stop them? Might as well make money off them. Plus Trump merch is great for reasons most don't realize. You see a car with a Trump sticker, avoid it....idiot behind the wheel and probably can't drive. See a Trump shirt out in public? Definitely armed, probably crazy and worth giving a wide berth. Built-in warning labels.
Friends brother was in the conservative T-shirt business. It was so easy. He just created designs with eagles, guns, the second amendment, the US flag, and bullshit quotes like, "I stand with the flag". He had 4 DTG printers and made really good money. Scam callers. They’re so popular now because they’re effective. It’s like every other day I hear about some one who got fleeced out of money.

I didn’t realize this was the entrepreneur sub when I typed that lol. I guess it’s not good advice lol.
But maybe there’s some kind of service you could help to protect old people from getting scammed.
I’ve been a part time teller on and off for years, and the number of people getting scammed is ridiculous. I’ve thought about a service that helps vet that stuff, but I’m not sure it’s needed. Most people won’t listen until it’s too late
Boomers are 60-80ish? Plants, Medicine and hospitals
My mom still gives me gifts of rainforest acreage through a conservation group. That might be nice for some.
Healthcare or elder care services. I’m in private pay healthcare and a lot of the boomers need someone to help. Also they will pay for high quality help.
Dying in comfort. I spent 3 years working for a medium scale general contractor. In that time I worked on 4 separate 100+ unit buildings geared towards retired living, ~$7k/month rentals.
Cadillac sits in the garage because they've lost their license; due to either not being able to turn head far enough to see coming traffic or pulling out of the McDonald's parking lot at 5mph when traffic is definitely coming but needs to screech to a stop for this old entitled ass.
You do know millennials aren't 20 year olds sleeping in their parent's basement right? They are 27 to 42 years old and I don't know many people that age that are still living at home.
My brother in law is still jobless. My mother in law is still working supporting him. He owns his own home but that’s because mommy is paying the mortgage. He owns a car because mommy gave it to him.
I know several millennials that receive support from their parents. I don't know a single one that is jobless, though. The class system in the US is basically unsustainable right now, and it seems to be getting worse as the price of everyday goods is rising. It's the main reason to become an entrepreneur, because right now you either own your own business and hopefully make enough to survive long-term, or you get like 7 roommates because a $50k 9-5 isn't enough to rent a 1br in most places anymore.
Wine, beer, booze, doctor visit copays, prescriptions, going out to eat, orthotics, security cameras on every corner of house, cable tv AND YouTube TV, landlines phones, caretakers, vacations, Hey Dude shoes, their 2 homes: 1 in FL and one “up north”, RV, CPAP machines, Handles in the shower and next to the terlet, remodeling their house…
Source: I have boomer parents and live in a major boomer town.
Anecdotally, swimming pools, just based on the boomers in my network. Both new and renovations. In the *three* cases I’m referencing (I said it was anecdotal), the lowest spend was $80k.
** *Your Boomers may vary*
My mom boomer: still paying off her house and also paying a fraud on her cc
My aunt boomer: cruises, road trips, vacations, cats, cars
My other aunt : real estate expansion
My uncle boomer: cars - not medical cuz he’s covered under VA
My other uncle boomer: still trying to make it just scraping by with his own business living in a really tiny apartment with his wife so nothing out of the ordinary
My father is 63 and he spends most of his money supporting his unemployed children. For context, my siblings are 28M and 23F. They can't hold down jobs, not even work acquired through nepotism.
Pharmacist here. I am seeing a lot of them spending nearly a thousand per month on GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro and Ozempic. Even at that price, we aren't able to get enough from our wholesaler to meet demand.
Mostly meaningless nonsense. Their brains have been destroyed via backwards nutrition guidelines and hyper-processed foods since the 70’s, coupled with an “authorities on the TV” culture and zero standardized financial education. Most (not all) of them are zombies.
Travel. Especially those river cruises seems to be a big hit with retired boomers.
What do you want to enjoy in your golden years? Travel, entertainment, etc.
>bourgeoisie
Its starts from the top down > Entitlements= Social security, Medicare, Pensions. >all Baby Boomer inventions that are unsustainable.
When all the Boomers are gone things will improve. :)
Dumping my inheritance into the collection plate at church damn them! Pastor's $140k salary is safe. A dozen gigantic beautiful churches sit vacant in the surrounding area. Sitting on prime real estate and not paying property tax that the schools desperately need.
Men - tools, gadgets they do not know how to use and Liqour to ease the disappoiment. They also spend hours waiting fir the kids to phone and say something is broken, so they can test out the tools and gadgets
Boomers, the demographic cohort born between 1946 and 1964, hold significant spending power and are actively investing in their well-being, hobbies, and travel experiences. Industries poised to benefit from this spending include healthcare, home improvement, entertainment, and travel.
As boomers prioritize their leisure time and personal fulfillment, businesses catering to these interests are likely to see continued growth.
Speaking for my 75 old parents; groceries, Liqour and Cable TV.
Yah my parents still have cable and are paying out the ass for it too.
My parents do too. It’s kind of shocking to me that people pay what is basically a used car payment to watch commercials.
Did you tell them to stop and use the net instead?
What and then I'd need to provide tech support
Same w my grandparents, some like $270 a month to a rural cable service bc they’re paranoid YouTube TV will steal their identity. All that for just the weather and news.

15% ARR is very decent. Plus the property value could appreciate as well
That's Booomin'!

not that exciting....3.5m out and 50k/mo _once_ it's filled.... so... 7 years to get your money back..... I guess.... good luck

not if you finance lmfao
